A marketer of Petroleum Products, Mr. Bello Mohammed, has urged the National Assembly to enact a law to make oil pipeline vandalism an offence punishable by death.

Mohammed said this in a telephone interview with our correspondent on Sunday. He was reacting to events leading up to the latest pipeline explosion, which led to the death of over 30 persons in Arepo, Ogun State.

He said the activities of vandals were not only causing environmental pollution and sabotaging the economy, but also claiming lives.

Mohammed said, “The National Assembly should enact a law that would make pipeline vandalism a criminal offence punishable by death just like armed robbery.

“Those engaged in it have taken their criminality to an unacceptable level, they now carry arms with which they kill Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation officials and security agents. We have lost so many lives to pipeline explosions that we cannot continue to let this happen.”

He said transporting oil products through pipelines remained the cheapest and safest means of conveying the products.

According to him, the deplorable state of roads has led to cases of oil tankers falling and spilling their contents.

Mohammed said efforts being made by the Haruna Momoh-led Pipeline and Products Marketing Company to bring various oil depots back on stream should be supported.

He also appealed to the National Orientation Agency to sensitise members of the public to the dangers of pipeline vandalism to save the environment and preserve the country’s economy.

President Goodluck Jonathan on
Sunday said despite the various
challenges currently facing
Nigeria, it was too old to
disintegrate.
Having been together for about
100 years since the
amalgamation of the North and
South protectorates in 1914, the
president said it was too late for
any region in the country to ask
for a “divorce.”
Jonathan spoke during the
Armed Forces Remembrance Day
inter-denominational service at
the National Ecumenical Centre,
Abuja.
He said, “In 2014, we are going
to celebrate our centenary; our
100 years of existence.
“You cannot stay in a marriage
for 100 years and say that is the
time you will divorce. If there are
issues that we have been
managing, we will continue to
manage them. We will not talk
about separation.
“I always say that all nations of
the world have their own history.
Sometimes, people question the
unity of this country, especially
when you talk about the
amalgamation of the South and
North in 1914.
“If you look at the history of very
big countries, some have very
ugly past. It is for us who are
alive today to reshape our future.
We should begin to talk about
those things that will bring unity
and development.”
The President also warned
leaders at all levels to desist from
divisive tendencies, saying the
country would overcome some
of its challenges if the citizens
loved one another and live in
peace.
He said, “ If our leaders at all
levels, whether political leaders,
community or religious leaders,
talk more about those things that
divide us instead of those things
that bring us together, then we
will be encouraging younger
ones who know little or nothing
about the history of this country
to do things differently.
“So, the best gift we can give to
the armed forces and sister
organisations, is for us in our
daily utterances and activities to
emphasise the need for us to live
in peace, love ourselves and
unite.
“Some people talk about
disintegration of Nigeria. Even at
political level, some people take it
as a weapon of self-seeking
when they want to discuss
politics.
“My conviction and I believe that
of everybody here is that Nigeria
will continue to remain a united
nation.
“Nigeria will not disintegrate.
Anybody who is doing any
research on sociology,
psychology or political science
can do his work, but Nigeria will
remain one.”
Jonathan, who spoke also on the
country’s greatness, attributed it
to its size and diversity.
He said, “I always say that they
say Nigeria is big, it is not
because of the oil. There are
smaller countries that produce
more oil than us. What is the
quantity of oil that we produce
after all?
“Yes, we do produce but our oil
per unit person is insignificant.
But we are appreciated and we
are still reckoned with in spite of
our challenges because of our
size and diversity both of the
human beings and the
environment.
“But when we work together,
we will take this country to
where we want to go. Where our
children, our grandchildren and
children yet unborn will be
happy.”
On the security challenges, the
President noted that security
agents were doing well.
Jonathan said, “We sleep because
our security agents have to stay
awake. In some cases where
things happen, people blame
them. But for those of us who
get daily reports about the
security challenge we have, we
know that these men and
women have been doing very
well.”

The only surviving male child in
the late Governor Patrick Ibrahim
Yakowa’s family is dead.
Adamu Yakowa who was ill died
yesterday in General Hospital
Kafanchan, Kaduna State at the
age of 51. His death came less
than a month after the death of
his elder brother, Governor
Yakowa in a Naval chopper crash
in Nenge village, Bayelsa State.
“Adamu, a retired Vehicle
Inspection Officer [VIO], fell sick
the same week his brother,
Yakowa died. The late Adamu
was a gentleman and peace
loving.
“He left behind his wife and five
children,” a close member of the
family, Engr. Micheal Dos said.

“Now His parents went to
Jerusalem every year at the feast
of the Passover. And when He
was 12 years old, they went up
to Jerusalem after the custom of
the feast. And when they had
fulfilled their days, as they
returned, the child, Jesus, tarried
behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph
and His mother knew not of it.
“But they, supposing Him to have
been in the company, went a
day’s journey; and they sought
Him among their kinsfolk and
acquaintances. And when they
found Him not, they turned back
again to Jerusalem, seeking Him.
“And it came to pass that, after
three days, they found Him in the
temple, sitting in the midst of the
teachers, both hearing them, and
asking them questions. And all
that heard Him were amazed at
His understanding and answers.
“And when they saw Him, they
were astonished and His mother
said unto Him, Son, why hast
thou thus dealt with us? Behold
Thy father and I have sought
Thee sorrowing.
“And He said unto them, how is it
that ye sought Me? Knew ye not
that I must be about My Father’s
business? And they understood
not the saying, which He spoke
unto them”. Luke 2:41-50
This scripture is quite familiar to
several people as it tells us the
story of how Jesus followed His
earthly parents to Jerusalem for
the feast of the Passover. But our
concern here is not just the story.
We want to examine what
happened to Joseph and Mary
that Jesus was missing from
their midst and they never knew
it.
“Since it happened to people like
Joseph and Mary, it could happen
to anyone. As a matter of fact,
there are several people,
churches, and fellowship groups
in whose lives Jesus is presently
missing and they do not know it.
This then calls for a careful study
of this incident in order to learn
wisdom for our lives and our
walk with God.
It will be a very costly assumption
to think that you are a child of
God, that God is with you and
that Jesus is in your heart, only to
get to the gate of heaven and
discover that you never knew
Him or that you missed Him
along the way. At that time, it will
be too late and eternity will open
up to you on the other side,
which is hellfire. There is
therefore an urgent need to pay
close attention to this matter.
The Bible said, “Now His parents
went to Jerusalem every year at
the feast of the Passover ...” Vs.
41. This is one thing you should
note as we prayerfully go on in
this study. Mary and Joseph were
not careless, ungodly people.
They were quite religious. They
went every year to the feast of
Passover. They were not people
who absconded from church;
they were not even people who
went to the temple occasionally.
They went regularly.
Maybe you are such a person
who has never missed any of
your church meetings and
programs, Joseph and Mary were
people like you. The Bible records
that when Jesus was 12 years
old, they went with Him up to
Jerusalem as they had-always
done.
Think a little more about the
background of Mary and Joseph.
Mary was a woman that set
herself aside for God. She
consecrated her heart to God.
Mary, though in courtship
relationship with Joseph, with
the consent of their two families
and the wedding day already
fixed, still maintained her
virginity! Not many young people
in this age care so much about
being chaste. Not many
eventually get married as virgins.
They “spoil” themselves with
premarital sex or fornication.
Many even go as far as aborting
pregnancies. But not Mary, she
kept herself in the midst of such
pressures and temptations. Now
if such a person that has been
working in the service of God
(proper consecration), walking
with a heart turned towards God,
and in holiness, missed Jesus,
then I would again like to remind
you to consider this very closely.
It could happen to you also!

What could have happened to
Mary and Joseph that they
missed Jesus from their lives?
Remember, that Mary carried
Jesus for nine months in her
womb. She stayed with Jesus for
12 years. How could they have
missed Him and not know it?
Think…have you also missed

Son of Jigawa state governor,
Aminu Sule Lamido, was
yesterday released on bail after
knocking down a pedestrian on
the streets of Kano on
Wednesday.
Lamido run over one Nasiru
Sabo, an almajiri, on BUK road
near Dan Agundi City gate in
Kano.
Witnesses told Daily Trust that
the incident occurred around
8pm, saying the victim was trying
to cross the road when the
driver of an SUV vehicle run over
him.
The victim, who was said to have
sustained head injuries, was
taken to Murtala Mohammed
Specialist Hospital, before he
died.
Theincident was first reported
to Murtala Mohammed Specialist
Hospital Police out post, before it
was transferred to Kwalli police
station.
Spokesman for the Kano state
Police Command ASP Magaji Musa
Majia confirmed the incident
saying Lamido has been granted
bail, and the accident vehicle
placed under police custody.
“We are doing all other practical
in collaborating with VIO
inspection and other relevant
authorities to facilitate our
investigation. As soon as our
case has been updated we are
going to duplicate it and send it
to Directorate of Public
Prosecutions (DPP) for legal
advice,” he said.

The people of Egbe village in
Yagba West local government
area of Kogi State are battling to
come to terms with the reality
that a father could killed his son
for ritual purpose in a their
community, something which
has not been witnessed in their
living memory.
The villagers woke up on January
1, 2013 to discover that one of
them, Hosea Folorunso, allegedly
killed his four months old son,
Sunday Folorunso, in mysterious
circumstance.
Daily Trust learnt that the
herbalist allegedly killed the baby
at night, dug a shallow grave in
his compound and buried the
corpse to conceal the crime.
Kogi State commissioner of
police, Alhaji Mohammed Musa
Katsina, confirmed the arrest of
Folorunso, saying that he had
confessed to carrying out the act
in the course of investigation.
Residents of the area were not
willing to speak to journalists,
but one of them who identified
himself as Ajayi Michael said the
news came as a rude shock to
them that a father could kill his
child while others were in the
church praying to witness the
arrival of the New Year.
He said on the fateful day, many
residents of the village went to
Church to usher in the New Year
and returned very late, saying
that at about 5:30 am, they heard
unusual wailing from the
herbalist’s home. When people
rushed to find out what was
happening, he said, they were
told that the herbalist’s four
months old baby had died.
Therefore people were surprised
when police came to arrest him
for allegedly killing his own son.
“We have been neighbours for
about 15 years, but because he is
a herbalist and I am a Christian,
we live miles apart. I don’t really
know much about him and what
happened,” Mr Michale said.
Besides, some other residents
who refused to speak on record
said they believed the man must
have done it for ritual purposes.
Parading the suspect in Lokoja
last Friday, the state police
commissioner, Alhaji Mohammed
Musa Katsina, said the suspect
who is a herbalist in Egbe killed a
four months old baby for rituals
on December 31st, 2012 when
people were at the church
praying to usher in the New Year.
According to him, the suspect
who hails from Egbe in Yagba
west local government area of
Kogi state, at about the hours of
11:55 pm on the fateful day,
quietly took the baby (Sunday
Folorunso) who was deep asleep
with the mother outside the
house and killed him in a
gruesome manner.
“The suspect having killed the
baby dug a shallow grave in his
compound and hurriedly buried
the corpse so that people would
not know that he killed his own
son,” the commissioner said.
Katsina said the suspect was
arrested by the police squad in
Egbe following intelligence
report and brought to the police
headquarters for interrogation.
He said after investigation, the
suspect confessed to have
committed the acts.
Katsina added that the suspect
led the police to where he buried
the corpse and exhumed it. He
said an autopsy was being
carried out by a renown
pathologist at the Federal Medical
Centre to ascertain the cause of
the death, and that the suspect
would be charged to court after
investigations are concluded.
“I can only describe the situation
as a season of madness because
the baby is an innocent and
defenceless human being who
can neither hurt nor provoke
anybody,” he said.
Katsina called on members of the
public not to hoard information
from the police as they are
determined to get to the root of
the gruesome mother of the
baby by his father.
The suspect, Folorunso, who
spoke to journalists at the police
headquarters in Lokoja gave
unbelievable account of how his
son died.
He said: “I asked my wife to
prepare food before I return to
the house and she told me she
was going out to buy something
with the eldest son. When I came
back, I met her sitting down with
our daughter so I said ‘you are
sitting there when I asked you to
go and cook for me?’ So I picked
up a broom and wanted to beat
her.
“The woman took to her heels
with the girl and I got annoyed
and took the four months old
baby and asked her to come and
pick him since she was running
away. As I held the baby, he
turned into a cat and I
immediately threw the cat on the
ground and it turned to the baby
again and when I went there to
carry the baby, I discovered that
the baby was dead.”
When the baby was exhumed
our reporter observed that red
ribbons were tied round his
hand.
Meanwhile, the liaison officer 1
of Yagba West local government
area, Mr Tunji Aro who spoke to
journalists wondered why a
father could kill his child for
whatever reason.
Aro assured the community that
adequate security measures
were being put in place to
forestall a re-occurrence of such
crime and urged them to be law
abiding and always pursue
legitimate means of livelihood.
He called on the people to be
prayerful and always report to
the police any unpleasant
behaviour, saying that if useful
information had not been given
to the police, the herbalist could
not have been arrested for such
action.

Former President Olusegun
Obasanjo has said more could be
done to reach out to the Boko
Haram sect to find out what
leads it to carry out acts of
violence.
In an interview with American
television network CNN
yesterday, Obasanjo suggested
the Federal Government should
adopt a dual-track approach
rather than just cracking down
on the group.
“To deal with a group like that,
you need a carrot and stick. The
carrot is finding out how to
reach out to them,” he said.
“When you try to reach out to
them and they are not amenable
to being reached out to, you
have to use the stick.”
But Obasanjo said President
Goodluck Jonathan was “just
using the stick” in his efforts.
“He’s doing one aspect of it well,
but the other aspect must not be
forgotten,” he said.
Obasanjo has previously spoken
in favour of the carrot and stick
approach to Boko Haram, and in
a BBC interview in September, he
said he “believed the authorities
are now adopting” this method.
His interview with CNN yesterday
was the first time the former
president publicly said Jonathan
is not using the “carrot” option
in solving the Boko Haram issue.
President Jonathan has
repeatedly said government was
willing to dialogue with Boko
Haram but that the sect leaders
needed to come out in the open
first.
Analysts suggest that reaching
out to Boko Haram may be
increasingly difficult because the
group has split into different
factions.
Obasanjo said he had tried to
reach out to the sect about a
year and a half ago through a
lawyer who was acting as the
group’s proxy, and had asked if
they had external backing.
The lawyer told him that the
group was receiving support
from other Nigerians who have
resources overseas or “other
organizations from abroad,”
Obasanjo said.
“If they had 25% support a year
and a half ago, today that
support has doubled,” the
former president said.
Resolving the Boko Haram issue
is key to Nigeria’s progress,
according to Obasanjo, who now
heads an eponymous foundation
that is working to promote
human security across Africa.
“Boko Haram undermines
security, and anything that
undermines security undermines
development, undermines
education, undermines health,
undermines agriculture and food
and nutrition security,” he said.
Boko Haram has claimed
responsibility for numerous
deadly attacks on mosques,
churches and businesses in parts
of the North in the past three
years.
The attacks on mosques and
churches are believed to be
intended to incite tensions
between the two religious
groups, hoping to drive a wedge
between them.
However, despite the ongoing
challenges the country faces,
Obasanjo said he does not
foresee Nigeria ever splitting in
two, into north and south.
“We in Nigeria now know that it
would cost us much more to
break up than it will cost us to
come together,” he said.
In the BBC interview in
September, Obasanjo said bad
leadership contributed in
propping up the Boko Haram
sect.
He said “inadequate education in
the North…inadequate
employment opportunities in the
country, all that are part of what,
if you like, is remote cause of
Boko Haram as far as I am
concerned.”
He said the sect’s stated objective
of imposing Sharia law on
Nigeria will never work because
of the religious diversity of the
population.
“Those who are on the other
side, Boko Haram, and those who
believe in their cause or waiting
for their cause, know that it is
not the war that they can win,”
he had said.
In November, Obasanjo also
spoke on the need to forcefully
tackle the insurgency, saying his
successors did not face the Boko
Haram issue like he did with the
Odi killing of soldiers in 1999.
Speaking in Warri, Delta State at
an event in honour of the
Christian Association of Nigeria
president Ayo Oritsejafor,
Obasanjo said, “My fear is that
when you have a sore and you
don’t attend to it early enough, it
festers and becomes very bad.
Don’t leave a problem that can be
bad unattended.”
Referring to the Odi crisis of
1999, he added: “I attended to a
problem that I saw; I sent
soldiers. They were killed, 19 of
them decapitated. If I had
allowed that to continue, I would
not have the authority to send
security anywhere again. I
attended to it…. If you say you do
not want a strong leader, who
can have all the characteristics of
a leader, including the fear of
God, then, you have a weak
leader and the rest of the
problem is yours.”

The Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) yesterday alleged that the Federal Government was plotting to discredit and silence key opposition leaders so as to stymie moves for merger of political parties ahead of 2015 elections.

In a statement in Lagos yesterday, ACN spokesman Lai Mohammed said the plot was targeted at ACN leader Bola Tinubu, his CPC counterpart General Muhammadu Buhari and their associates.

“Asiwaju Bola Tinubu is particularly a prime target of these evil machinations, because of his status as the leader of the country’s second biggest party, his progressive credentials as well as his electoral value,” Mohammed said.

He said the PDP-led government wants to “cripple the opposition, by ensuring that nothing will be left of the integrity of its key leaders even if they are fortunate to make it to 2015.”

“Some key government agencies have also been co-opted to dig up any dirt they hope can be plastered on the targeted leaders, while foreign intelligence agencies have been contacted in a desperate attempt to unearth any information that can be used to discredit and disgrace these major opposition figures thus distracting them from the merger plans.

“Indications are that highly-combustible sectional and religious issues, that are being manipulated by desperate forces to divide and destroy, are not off the table as long as exploiting them can shut down the opposition. Or how else does one interpret a recent PDP statement that President Goodluck Jonathan is being criticized by the opposition because he is from a minority ethnic group?

“And what about the continuous efforts, which have failed so far, to portray a key opposition leader as a sponsor of Boko Haram? His nomination as a ‘facilitator’ of some phantom peace talks was not an accident, but was carefully choreographed to portray him as a religious zealot and terrorist not fit to preside over the affairs of the nation,” Mohammed added.

Senior special assistant to President Jonathan on public affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe, could not be reached by telephone, and he did not reply to a text message sent to him last night.

Also, PDP spokesman Olisa Metuh was not available for comments yesterday.

discovered, a Professor at
the University of Benin
said on Tuesday.
Isaiah Ibeh, the Dean of
the School of Basic Medical
Science of the University,
said in Benin that the
herbal drug has
undergone “series of
successful tests”.
“We are at the threshold
of making history, in the
sense that we seem to
have with us something
that will permanently take
care of what over time
seems to have defied all
solutions.
“We are talking about the
latest discovery of an oral
drug made from plants
extraction in Nigeria for
the possible cure of the
pandemic, HIV and AIDS
virus,” he said.
Mr. Ibeh said research on
the project started in 2010
and culminated in the
development of
“Deconcotion X (DX)–
Liquid or Bioclean 11 for
the cure of HIV and AIDS”.
He said that while the
existing retroviral drugs
are intervention drugs for
the management of AIDS,
the new discovery is a
possible cure.
“We have tried to look at
the product first; its
toxicological analysis and
discovered that it has a
large safety margin. This
means that if animals or
human beings are
exposed to it, they will not
suffer any serious harm at
all from the exposure.
“It also helped us to know
the quantity we can
conveniently give to
animals and will feel
secure that nothing
untoward will happen. We
have also done the
bacteriological analysis on
it, after which we looked
at its effect on the virus
and the result was quite
revealing and refreshing.”
Mr. Ibeh also said that the
drug had been exposed to
series of medical
examination both in
Nigeria and in the USA.
He added that the drug
had performed well on
patients with the HIV virus
and had shown evidence
of total restoration of
damaged tissues.
“The result showed an
increase in the body
weight of the individual
administered with DX,” he
said. “The body weight
was statistically significant
when compared with the
control group.”
He said that further tests
were being conducted to
determine the point at
which “a patient becomes
negative after being
administered the drug?”
“This verification is
necessary because it is
what is used to measure
whether infection is still
there or not. So we need
to know the siro-
convention time.
“But preliminary results
showed that of the five
latest patients orally
administered with the
drugs, our findings is that
up to seven months , three
of them were siro
negative while two were
sill faintly positive,” he
said.
Mr. Ibeh appealed for
support from the Federal
Government and relevant
bodies to assist the
university with relevant
equipment to sustain the
