Politics / Re: Apete Bridge,ibadan Collapses Again! What A Government! by SirKay3(m): 5:25pm On Jul 16, 2014
All, don't let us crucify the OP please. I believe he's got a point to prove, though the photos he posted didn't really back up his claim.

Here's what actially happened.

The initial makeshift wooden bridge was swept away by heavy flood on a Saturday night about 3weeks ago, learnt about 35 people lost their lives then, as they were swept away with the wooden pedestrian bridge then.

Governor Ajimobi was there 5days after the incident (Wednesday the following week). He was there with the press crew, they all stood at Ijokodo/Ibadan Poly end of the bridge, while people converged enmasse at Apete end of the bridge watching. He's there for about an hour.

Work commenced on another side of the bridge, to do another makeshift pedestrian bridge the following day. Metal containers (2nos) were positioned in the water way, to allow water flow into them, while the remaining portion of the water way were covered with sand. The containers had their top covered with sand too and that was openex to people last week Tuesday as makeshift pedestrian bridge.

The sand was washed away last night, as a result of heavy downpour in Apete, thus cutting off passage through the place.

There's an ongoing construction of a makeshift bridge at the point where the former swept away wooden bridge was. The three heavy bridge structures in the pgotos are meant for the real bridge under construction by NAIRDA.

The guy is real, true and trustworthy. His brother is his contact person and his name is Bayo, though his sister helps out if need be. Bought 4nos of HTC Vivid and Sensation from him last year. His phones are okay. Though had a little issue with the Sensation, he is willing to help out with it. Feel free to transact business with him.

Travel / Aero Flight (accra - Lagos) Has Flat Tyre by SirKay3(m): 11:57am On Jun 18, 2012
Aero Contractor flight AJ2002 which is supposed to take passengers from Accra to Lagos by 8.55am Naija time this morning was discovered to have flat tyre, by one of the passengers who alerted the cabin crew. We were all asked to disembark and go back to the boarding gate to wait for spare tyre to be brought in from Lagos to Ghana.

My take on this. If it were to be BA, Virgin Atlantic or other foreign airlines, would we be waiting for spare tyre to brought in from their home country before leaving? High time government acts before things gets out of hand.

@ otumfour,

Wa yia d3 papaa. Keep it up. It's LIVE on TV3 now, as the airport CEO had a press conference, which was aired to give full details of what happened. It was reported that the plane landed into pool of water on the runway, which made it overshoot it and into the bus. So sad a news.

@ JeSoul,

Language difference is no big deal to me, as I'm the inquisitive type and already learning the most common of them, Twi. We live in an estate setup(they call theirs community this or that), whereby you are alone in your gated/walled compound and interact with people in your lane, either when there is a general meeting or lane/community party for families or sometimes when you are driving out of your compound. Mixing with people is a bit hard here, as though you are all neoghbours and know each other, you hardly interact.

Our kids were the major factor that's driven me in learning Twi, as three of them understands it to some extent, about 40%. Ghana languages are a combined subject which is compulsory for students in primary and secondary schools in Ghana. We watch Twi movies a lot, while we also have a learn Twi easily book at home. The ones I dont understand, are always explained/pronounced to me better by my pastor who is also helping me to learn it. I could pick little in their conversations now. Infact, I've got lots of Ghana gospel music on my phone/laptop that I listen to regularly whenever I'm not in Ghana, just to keep in tune with the language.

Whenever I go out, I say the little I hear, while making the people realise that I'm a NIgerian and still learning. I always encourage them to speak to me in Twi and ask for meaning of the words/sentences they say. They are friendly people I'l say and we are not regretting our living here.

@ Roforofo,

Buka and House of Ovation are the most popular places that serves Naija/Ghanaian foods. Ask anybody at Total Petrol Station in Osu about them, they are a few metres away from there.
Travel / Re: Accra, Lagos Or Dakar by SirKay3(m): 7:43pm On Jan 22, 2012
@ Roforofo,

Labadi Beach, Midindi and Movenpick Hotels are not too far from Osu, just about 5mins drive. Fiesta Royale is around Dzorwulu and about 15mins. You are assured of security at the hotels, so, no cause for alarm. Your budget per night should be okay. Google the hotels, they have telephone numbers there, feel free to call them and sort your bookings out. Some of them do offer free airport pickup. I'ld have offered assistance by going there to check out their rates for you, but I'm not in Accra presently. You are free to mail me through kaadetunji@yahoo.com for any further assistance. All the best.
Travel / Re: Information: Travelling To Ghana by SirKay3(m): 12:43pm On Jan 22, 2012
@ fsb,

You are not expected to pay any dime whether at MMIA or Kotoka International Airport because of your virgin passport. The worst is for the MMIA immigration, customs and NDLEA guys to ask you for money, not bribe or because of your passport, but it's a norm with them. NDLEA/Customs people are the one that asks about where you work, how much do you have with you and what you are going to do, answer them politely. Nobody holds anyone for not giving anybody money. I've never given them money since 2009 that I went with my wife and kids (all of them virgin passports) till now that I'm a frequent flyer on Lagos - Accra - Lagos route. Dont go by road, because it's a long journey of about 12hrs, while it's 45mins at most by air. Dont be afraid of anything. You can go with up to $3000.
Travel / Re: Accra, Lagos Or Dakar by SirKay3(m): 8:10am On Jan 22, 2012
@ blackowl,

I live in Accra with my family. I love travelling/going places, we have been to most of their tourist sites in and outside of Accra. I do drive around town just to know places on my own.

@ JeSoul,

Life in Accra is exactly what my family and I had been dreaming of, until the opportunity came for us to relocate from Lagos in 2009 and since then we are loving it here. The country has potentials to be great, though with its flaws too. Things are better managed here than Naija.
Travel / Re: Accra, Lagos Or Dakar by SirKay3(m): 6:48pm On Jan 21, 2012
@ JeSoul,

Nice contribution. You are right with your traffic observation, like you've said, it's better managed than in Lagos. Most of the tourist sites like Akosombo Princess Dodi Cruise ship (trip to Dodi Island on the cruise boat for a return trip of 5hrs, with LIVE band/buffet served on board), Elmina Castle (where slave trade took place), Kakum National Park (where the canopy walk in the bush is) and Hans Cottage Botel (Live Corcs are seen here) to mention a few, are outside Accra, thus limiting time spent in traffic.

There are couple of nice hotels within Osu, East Legon and Spintex Road, that are still within the range of $60 - $80 per night, but within Tema metropolis, decent hotels there are not as expensive as in the heart of Accra.
Travel / Re: Accra, Lagos Or Dakar by SirKay3(m): 5:42pm On Jan 21, 2012
@ Roforofo,

I'll recommend Accra for you/your family. I'm a Nigerian, living in Accra with my wife and children. Within your budget limit for the period of your stay, you'l get value for your money there, while not condemning Lagos, as it's in Naija. Lot of factors goes into this, like you mentioned, as most of the tourist sites in Ghana are not far from each other and coupled with the fact that there are lots of non Africans living, working and walking the streets of Accra freely.
Travel / Re: Information: Travelling To Ghana by SirKay3(m): 6:19pm On Jan 20, 2012
I'm not too sure about that in respect of new passports, but prepare your mind for the immigration people at MMAI.
Travel / Re: Information: Travelling To Ghana by SirKay3(m): 5:23pm On Jan 20, 2012
@ fsb,

No worries about your new Ecowas passport for your trip to Ghana, as it's acceptable. You may wish to take along with you some dollars, depending on your choice or if you have Gtb ATM card, go with it, it works on Ghana Commercial Bank ATMs (I'l advise you take dollars along with you, because ATM could mess you up anytime). Make sure you change your dollars to cedis at the baggage area of the arrival hall at Kotoka International Airport, so that there'l be some cedis on you before going out of the arrival hall. Average hotels in Accra is $60 - any amount depending on your taste. There are hotels that charges less than that and in Cedis. Glo is likely to be in operation by the time of your trip, but call rates are cheaper on most of the GSM networks than in Naija. I live in Ghana, feel free to ask for further information anytime.
Travel / Re: Travelling Advice To Ghana by SirKay3(m): 5:33pm On Jan 19, 2012
@ Confilass,

Since you reside in Lagos, it's a very simple thing. Opposite Yaba Presby Church is where Crosscountry and Efex Transport Companies are based. Both plies Lagos - Accra route on daily basis. Return ticket with them should not be more than 15K or so. ABC also plies the same route daily, their office is at Mile 2 or so. If you wish to travel by air, check www.flyaero.com, www.arikair.com & www.airnigeria.com for booking details/ticket cost. You've got to have an international passport for any of the two.
Politics / Re: Why Are Ghanians Not Protesting Over A Similar Increase In Their Pump Price: by SirKay3(m): 9:03am On Jan 10, 2012
Reading through the thread, it seems most people dont know what is obtainable in Ghana compared with Nigeria's situation in respect of oil subsidy. I'm resident in Accra, Ghana and in my third year with my wife and kids. Here in Ghana, petrol price has always been high compared with Nigeria's. It used to be GHc1.30 (One Cedi Thirty Pesewas - Equivalent of #135 in 2009), later increased to about GHc1.55 and recently GHc1.75. Price of LPG was reviewed too, a 14.5kg, which was going going for GHc15.30 (#1,570.00) before now, was increased to GHc19.70 (#2,000.00).

One thing that goes for Ghanaians is that their economy is growing daily, while cost of living though high here too, but there are alternatives to spend on. An average Ghanaian doesnt joke with local foods like Banku, Kenkey, Wakye, Koko & Kose, Kokonte etc, while most Nigerians prefer the fast foods. They do have fast food joints here too, but it's not a frequent thing to them.

Most of the vehicles here run on LPG, mostly the taxis, while most homes uses the same LPG that we use in Nigeria for cooking. We use 14.5kg cylinder in my house and it lasts for 2months (we all know that 12.5kg in Nigeria lasts for just 3weeks). Light is regular, though not in most places across Ghana, about 90% have regular supply of light. Most houses uses energy saver bulbs, unlike the usual 200watts bulbs in Nigeria. On a monthly basis, I pay GHc45.00 (#4,650.00) per month on my prepaid meter for electricity, that is regular and I've got appliances that consumes light at home (cooker, water heaters, AC and washing machine). My house is supplied by public water, for which I pay just GHc17.50(#1,800) per month. I dont have generator at home and have not used it since I've been living here.

Ghanaians are feeling the increase too, but it's minimal. Let's not compare what is happening in Nigeria now to Ghana, as percentage of increase in Nigeria is way higher than that of Ghana. Let's leave Ghana subsidy issue out of Nigeria's own please.

@ otooro,

It's the antivirus that is causing most of the wahala. Dont bother activating any for now. E6 is a very fantastic phone when compared with blackberry, as it oes most things blackberry does. I've got a 32GB memory card in mine, where I've got loads of movies that I watch when free or on a journey. You'l never regret the phone. I'm even looking for a fairly new one to buy for a friend.

@ otooro,

I use E6, experienced the same hanging problems when I newly got it in August, but later stopped. No cause for alarm about it. Go to Ovi Store on your phone or PC and download the applications you lost from there. Yahoo messenger is available when you download through your PC. Click on Nokia N8 as your phone model when downloading yahoo messenger.
