yes, community policing is usually a local thing. here in NY i think there are only about 4k state police officers, the others are local police officers, in the tens of thousands, every region has its own Mayor and local police department
Whyem15: Mind you, the special constabulary police initiative was meant to solve the problems of community policing(which involves patrolling), man power problem and other major problems of the police force, few states have implemented it and this that have implemented it, it seems not to have achieved results. Only Lagos state with the RRS initiative has actually improved policing efforts. Some other states are trying to some extent too(e.g Osun state with the armomised vigilante group) but more needs to be done. In addition, expecting a single police force to be in charge of effective patrolling every neighborhood in Nigeria will be very costly and extremely difficult, but sharing the funding and responsibility to all levels of government will make it easier and this brings about separate police forces at the federal, state and local levels.
Every so called developed countries out there are mostly in debt, if not all. increasing tax revenue is also important, otherwise we won't be able to fund anything. and we gotta increase our debt, most countries do it. right now our debt is too low. we gotta borrow more and put that money into good use. Tiny Israel is over 200 billion dollars in debt, USA is over 14 trillion in debt. even Saudi Arabia. We gotta give out long term loans at low interest rates to our companies, so they can expand and hire more people, upgrade how we do things, establish trade schools across the country so our youths can get modern skills acquisitions, rather than hiring construction workers from china. These things aren't rocket science. its sad how we lag so far behind
Whyem15: The funds required is the first problem to encounter, how can it be solved?
Reforming the police is key. And lack of employment is also an issue. cops in Nigeria doesn't carry out neighborhood patrols in most places, all my 18yrs in naija i never once saw police patrolling (albeit that was a llng time ago, i doubt much has changed). where i live now, day and night, in the rain, snow, sun etc, policing never stop. distribute these guys around sensitive areas, provide them with better communication devices, body Cameras, ability to call for backup and that backup arrives in less than 5 mins, this gives a police officer the confidence that he wouldn't be left alone if he found himself in a bad situation. more 911 call centers, better pay for officers, lower pay equals bribery demands, pay them more. educate these cops, how to read maps, some cops can't tell NW corner from SE corner lol. how to use computers, secure crime scenes, store evidence. the list goes on and on. I hate how soldiers are involved in things they have no business being involved in, those guys are stretched too thin as it is. police need to step up
Whyem15: Guys, let's discuss this, beyond equipping the military and other security agencies, what else do you think is required to solve the problem of insecurity.
UPDATE 2-Nigeria to borrow $1.76 bln for security spending –FinMin
ABUJA, June 9 (Reuters) - Nigeria plans to borrow 722.53 billion naira ($1.76 billion) from domestic capital markets for additional security spending, Finance Minister Zainab Ahmed said on Wednesday.
As part of Nigeria's security spending, the World Bank also agreed to allow the government to restructure existing loans of 39.58 billion naira to supplement the funds, she told reporters after a cabinet meeting.
The cabinet also approved an allocation of 83.56 billion naira for the purchase and deployment of 30 million doses of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine.
When we matter small... Which kind head of state want come these days lol, all we could hope for these days are leaders from CAR or Mali , at least if they get kidnapped there won't be too much wahala lol
That's one long a$$ convoy. him carry every state commissioner of police with am? lol
DubaiLandLord: Usman Alkali Baba, the Inspector of General of Police, arrived in Lagos State on Wednesday to a cold welcome, as he was booed by Lagosians around Oshodi-Anthony Expressway while en route to an event.
Alkali’s mission in the state is yet to be known. However, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, told FIJ the IGP had just landed and his address or comments would soon be made known.
In preparation for the arrival of the IGP, Lagos State Police officials blocked the Oshodi-Lagos Airport Road and Maryland-Ojota axis of the highway.
The blockage of the highway did not go down well with Lagosians, who were stuck in traffic for hours. As the IGP’s convoy passed the blocked road, the already-pent-up crowd booed and called him names in Yoruba. While some shouted “thief”, others screamed “you will never do well”.
The IGP’s visit comes three days to the June 12 nationwide protests that have been planned to take place at Freedom Park, Ojota. The protests are against bad governance under the Buhari regime, with the recent ban on Twitter adding to mounting displeasure of Nigerians against the government.
This country just dey go backward. Dem dey block road because of IGP instead make the people block the other road and let him know say e no fit pass, dem just dey boo.
Nigerians are not ready for this country to move forward.
See as IGP motorcade long again. A country that have the highest number of people living in extreme poverty. The way civil servants dey blow money for this country eh
lol i don't doubt it. the risk is what makes me nervous for those kids. all good
SamuelAnyawu: There are many state schools here in the deep field and classes are ongoing.
Many are sponsored by USAID/EU and DFID grant under Education in Emergency. Some of the teachers are even paid through NGOs and students sometimes fed once a day self.
There are no boarding schools in the deep field. Even the Federal Government girls Monguno was moved to Maiduguri.
i get all that. simply still risky. and can they even sustain it. how many troops are they going to dedicate to each school etc. anyways, wish them well
Whyem15: The goal here is to reduce exposure time of students from 24hrs to less than 8hrs. It will also ensure that other security measures employed for protection of schools will have reduced work hours. And kidnapping large number of students is different from hit and run, virtually all the mass abductions occurred during dark hours, they will need the cover of darkness to escape as far away from civilization as possible where risk of detection will be minimal.
that's because we aren't good at controlling the narrative. the fg should give grants to our own tech companies and help them build rival platforms to whatsapp, fb, youtube etc. Then Nigerians can use these platforms, i for one hate the dominance of the US social media companies. They think Nigerians can no longer voice their concerns or express themselves because Twitter got banned? Oh the arrogance. Aren't we on here right now expressing ourselves? twitter not needed for that. it's insane that people all over the world are trusting their data to these foreign companies, without knowing what they are doing with it. every intelligence agencies can access all that data. i believe china was the country that made sure data of their citizens never leave their shores or shared with any foreign govt.
DubaiLandLord: I saw this news yesterday. Do you think the USA can withdraw funds because of this twitter suspension? Cause I don't think the FG is ready to reverse is decision yet.
if they can attack police stations in broad day light, what's stopping them from abducting these girls during the day time. security is a joke over there. the days of criminals carrying out their atrocities during the night time is over. i won't risk sending my kid to any school if i live in such an area. if not for lack of infrastructure, online learning would be better.
Whyem15: They shouldn't offer boarding services Sha, no school in the north should be doing that. Even higher institutions, they should seek accommodation on their own, the fees will be reduced significantly Sha. This way, it will be difficult for students/pupils abductors to abduct large numbers.
helicopter sustained bullet wound? lol. hope no severed parts
JOSCOFELIX: A nigeria airforce m35p who went to recon/strike mission on gudzamala with the nigeria army came under heavy fire from the terroist. the pilot, who are female pilot reply the attack launching rocket at the terrorist. the helicopter sustain a lot of bullet wound. the crew are safe
Which one be this now oga, na tribla talk we dey yarn for now Besides we know how this will end, as usual they got repelled and escaped into thin air with gunshot wounds, and we got two rifles to show ya. chikena , you welcome
me, I'm just happy to be here. carry on. no need for reasoning anymore but i beg no ask Buhari to provide any certificate on here, we don't want this platform banned
Is the aim of those herdsmen to break up Nigeria?(I'm asking, i don't know)., esn or whatever these guys are called, are doing just that. now I'm not excusing these marauders killing innocent people and destroying farmlands, but you guys seems to be comparing two different scenarios here. only thing both have in common of course is that they are killing people, but na today Nigerians dey get killed? But with esn and these gunmen, they are starting to tear down all semblance of govt, and you didn't think that threat to the govt wouldn't elicit a reaction? Are there no fulanis in the rank of bh and iswap? again I'm asking, and these groups also threaten Nigeria as a country, are they also not getting killed by troops. That said, life is cheap in Nigeria, you guys kill each other over slightest provocation, but some seem to have issues with that if it's been done by another ethnic group, while glossing over the killings being perpetrated by their own. we can scream on here all day everyday and destroy this thread, it won't change sh!t. until una learn how to settle things without committing murder. Buhari won't be there forever, but insecurity will be for a long while. smart communities should have Organised armed groups by now and secure their own communities, and no permission needed from the federal govt, state and local govt can give it's blessing for this. people do have the right to protect themselves, but I'd advise it should be properly organized,m otherwise it will simply open another avenue for civilian abuse
SamuelAnyawu: Shoot at sight order means you can shoot anyone with a gun.
I want a tweet warning Fulani herdsmen killing people everywhere in Nigeria that they will be taught a lesson in a Language they understand.
