Onlytruth: Believe me, I don't live in any part of the west (can't stay more than one day in Lagos). I own properties ONLY IN THE EAST. My brothers and other relatives own properties in Lagos, much like Sir Louis Odumegwu Ojukwu (Ikemba's father) owned half of Lagos.
I can't stop any Igbo from buying properties in Yoruba land. I would fight in the defense of their properties though if need be. Since when did he own half of Lagos- make sense and stop telling lies. Africa: The Nigerian Millionaires
Peanuts & Petroleum. Even before Britain withdrew five years ago, Nigeria had a flourishing trade, exporting peanuts, cotton, palm kernels and cocoa and importing in exchange manufactured goods, foods and tobacco The first native millionaires made their money by competing with the white man for his trade. Among Nigeria's richest businessmen is Alhaji Sanusi Dantata 46, who buys and ships much of the rich Kano region's peanut crop. Dantata's agents last year bought 84,000 tons from small farmers, paid with traditional handfuls of coin counted out in dusty village squares. Sir Odumegwu Ojukwu 66, knighted shortly before independence, started off by importing dried fish for resale to the nonfishing Nigerians then decided to ship the fish inland himself instead of leaving the job to others. He also amassed the country's largest fleet of "mammy wagons," the trucks that carry Nigerians (including market women, which gives the trucks their name) from place to place.
In today's new Nigeria, businessmen are more likely to succeed by producing new goods or services. Sir Mobolaji Bank-Anthony, 59, known as "The Black Englishman" for his impeccable manners and imperturbable air, began by importing cuckoo clocks and marble statues. He now controls or owns part of ten companies, including a tanker fleet and a charter airline. Emmanuel Akwiwu, 43, earned law degrees at Cambridge; returning home just as Nigeria's oil boom began he organized a company that now has 70 vehicles, hauls oil rigs and supplies for British Petroleum Ltd. Chief Shafi Lawal Edu, 54, who is president of Lagos' chamber of commerce, has built a fleet of eight oil tankers. He owns a silver-blue Rolls-Royce, but usually drives around in a Mercedes—thinks it is less ostentatious.
No Need to Clash. Many Nigerian businessmen have taken advantage of the novel opportunities that inevitably accompany broadening prosperity. Chief Timothy Adeola Odutola, 63, a onetime farmer, developed a business to produce bicycle tires for the growing army of bikes, has done so well that he is adding a $1,700,000 plant, plans eventually to harvest his own rubber from his 5,000-acre plantation. A former office worker, Ade Tuyo, 63, cast around for a business that would have 'first priority in people's spending" opened a bakery that today has four shops and makes 115 products. The firm's unusual name—De Facto Works Ltd.—was shrewdly chosen by Tuyo to impress Nigerian bankers with the fact that he was seriously in business
Bayo Braithwaite, 36, one of Nigeria's younger businessmen, left a British insurance company to found a firm that would write life insurance on Nigerians which the British underwriters avoided. So successful has Braithwaite been that his African Alliance Insurance Co Ltd occupies a six-story Lagos home office and has 300 bush-beating agents. Braithwaite lives in an elegant house in suburban Ikoyi, where glass and concrete are deliberately intermixed with African folk art to prove that "the two need never clash."
So, it is, too, with Nigerian business. The Nigerians feel that they and their onetime white masters need never clash. "The time is coming," says Timothy Udutola, "when we will produce more than we can consume and we will have to look outside Nigeria for markets" Against that time, Nigeria is seeking joint ventures in Europe and the U.S., has also concluded negotiations for eventual associate membership in the European Common Market. Already it exports more to the Market than to its old master, Britain.

Onlytruth: As long as I bought the land fair and square, as long as I am a Nigerian living inside the territories of the federal republic of nigeria, I don't give a damn with what the custom is. If you cross near my property, I will defend it with the last drop of my Okoro blood, and if I have to bring more Okoros from Onitsha, Nnewi and Aba to fight, I would do so. So get that into your two timing skull. Its no big deal with the way youre talking now its as if you enjoy Lagos more than your own state? Stay in Lagos we didnt ask you people to leave. you people no get shame at all lol EzeUche: We will never see eye to eye on this issue.
Anyone from the East knows that Awolowo is the most hated man in the East and rightfully so. Ask any Igbo, Ibibio and any other group who fought on behalf of Biafra. This man was horrible.
I hope God has mercy on his soul because I know I wouldn't! I dont even think people pay attention to the EAST. |

Justcash: In one Nigeria? The same Nigeria that two men from Ogun state (Obasanjo and Awolowo) Fought to keep as one? Dn't worry, one day you will wake and discover that the Igbos own everything that makes you boast of Lagos state and other Yoruba states! Nonsense! and whos problem is that? lol I dont know things igbos actually own that yorubas or even fulanis-hausa do not but if they do own tings good for them, I mean would any sensilbe person turn away a person with Money. I dont really know any top igbomen in Lagos let alone Nigeria or the World. really like a few everyone else purches something to say they own something not tangible business Onlytruth: Thank you my friend! That is their WORST FEAR and it is already happening. lol what worst fear? Igbos living in Lagos wow, theres also hausa there ghanian and liberians etc! What a fear . . not really you cant stop people from living in your area just as long as they obey western values theyre aiight. Igboland is soooo small which is probably why igbos leave and go elsewhere. Igbos are welcomed in Lagos as well as others. but remember dis is not your land- Whether One Nigeria or two no votes for non lagosians let alone a non westerner.lol |

Onlytruth: Did you say Zik "forced" Yoruba to stay in Nigeria? When? Onlytruth: As far as I know, Yoruba have always wanted one Nigeria. The question is: why not have ONE Nigeria. Why the " I keep my things, but I share yours" mentality?
Why not we all share all things together? are you blind when he was frolicking with the north. The yorubas never wanted One Nigeria. How many yorubas do you find outside Yorubaland? that should speak volumes! |

babapupa: You call this achievement? You no get shame ni? lol Justcash:
The bold part of your comment is unnecessary. It just placed you where you belong! No wonder you know much about fools and Mongolian idiots.
How could Awolowo ever be called the best leader NIGERIA ever had? You seem to lack basic understanding of expressions and their meanings.
Awolowo Can be your greatest leader because you felt his impact, but don't impose him on people who did not feel his impact.
Dude! I aint arguing if Awolowo was good or not. I agree that he was good. But he cannot be said to be the best in Nigeria!!
He never had the chance to lead Nigeria, so he was never nationalistic. Which actually leaves him at a regional and ethnic level! He is the best in the West and Among Yoruba leaders, NOT IN NIGERIA!!!!
Is this clear to you or do you need it to be translated into Yoruba? Its about the best Leader in Nigeria not about the best leader who led Nigeria. |

You are deranged. lol you dey vex about "Lagos Island" because you are wrong. No be big deal just admit you are wrong and move on. Lagos island- capital Agege, ikorodu, ikeja epe etc . . . - Western Government |

Dede1: I am bent on updating some loonies on this board about tough decisions made during Nigeria independent conferences. The issue of Lagos as federal capital and not constitute part of western region of Nigeria were contentious and protracted. Awolowo would have stuck to his guns and torpedo the national conferences and end what we know today as Nigeria. Believe me it was wise on his side that he gave up on such petty issue. If he did not give up, Ibadan would have been better than Lagos. Could you imagine the dust bin? No really Im saying does that make sense to you, you stated Awolowo gave up Lagos( Lagos Island) as capital- But Lagos (Lagos island) became capital before there was even a western region. How could he have given up Lagos? Are you mentally OK? Lagos (the island) was capital in 1914 Awo didnt even enter poltics by then. |

Dede1: You seem to be one of many Nigerians that missed the boat on correct and proper recorded events. The answer to your unfortunate and juvenile question is capital YES.
Please disabuse your mind on the political issues of 1959. As a matter of fact, Zik did not rush to northern region for personal ends. Rather the coalition government of NPC and NCNC was as result of Awolowo fast draw when he sent secret teams to Bello and Azikiwe for political deals.
Awolowo was the first to give up Lagos as part of west region hence Lagos as capital of Nigeria. Awolowo and your forbearers fought in 1967 to keep Nigeria as one entity hence the cesspit. Does this make sense to you- really im like sooooo serious. |

Onlytruth: Bros Dede1, you better believe what you read from that two faced character. I don't know what he knows about the USA, but he fails to see that President Obama was born in Hawaii but contested for US Senate and presidency from Illinois; Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is from Texas, but represented New York in Senate. I can go on.
The formative era of the Nigerian nation namely the 50s was a time the US was emerging a truly egalitarian society, and Zik being a product of the US education system wanted the best for Nigeria. He wanted a Nigeria where Nigerians can contest elections in areas of domicile. In the US, it takes one year to establish domicile. If there is any Nigerian that truly was ahead of his peers (at least in the ideals of forming a federal system of government) it was Zik. None other.
I hope you see why I keep saying that Awolowo destroyed southern Nigerian unity for ever. With the likes of Katsumoto who wants to eat their cakes and have it, forming a nation between Yoruba and Igbo is almost an impossibility. Which is why we have an arrested development. We dont want southern unity- Only the West, East,North, middle belt and and South South. All zones except SE want that. and I think the you have problems with reading comprehension or maybe its that selective reading you have. Barack Obama is example to refute your silly claim that votes in developed countries are not based on ethncitity. He also stated that in countries unlike America - the UK Katsumoto : I ask again, there are many scots living in england, why has not one contested in England? Also why don't the english contest in Scotland? What you should be doing is citing many examples of people who have contested and won elections in places outside their regions of origin. region of ORIGIN- Not like america where everyone is a settler there a big difference. Are you mentally OK? |

Onlytruth: When I came to this forum newly, my argument was that peoples of different values and understanding should not form a nation together. When I say that, you call for my head! What do you people want in Nigeria? Oh I know! You want to have Nigeria on your own warped terms. No chance! It's either we are ONE country or we divide. Simple. Nigeria can be divided- its not a big deal to me but will it NO. There is not a country in the world that doesnt have people with different values and understandings, so what are you saying? Stop talking like an idiot Nigeria is just 50 years- America that is 4 times older is just receiving a black president. and hes probably going to be the only one for next 50 years. |
Politics › Re: Awolowo Had No Equal by sjeezy8: 1:50pm On Jun 04, 2010 |
Katsumoto: As usual, you argue with your hands and not your brains. Is democracy not about numbers? Why did Americans not vote for a black president 200 years ago? Could it be because their country was in its infancy and blacks were still considered primitive? How many Yankees have won elections in the confederate states? Has a scottish man won elections in england? Has an English man won elections in scotland? Do you see where I am going with these? Those cpuntries, the UK and US, have had democracies and their country for several centuries but people still contest primarily in their regions. There may be a few candidates who have contested outside their regions in the US and the UK but I am sure it will be a very small number.
So back to my questions, ode. Why should Zik want to be the leader of the Western region? Why not the Northern region that had less qualified candidates than the Western region. Nigeria was not yet a nation and to expect the kind or political maturity which is absent in almost all republics is not only naive but also disingenuous. Yoruba people had had different leadership and organised societies for several centuries and you expect that they would accept leadership from a man from a region that did not have the sort of organised leadership that they were used to. This is also considering that there were several credible leaders in the west at the time. The fact is that Zik miscalculated; he assumed that because Yoruba people were very liberal and accommodating, that they would allow him be their leader. |
