Career / Re: About Sap? by skillsict: 12:54pm On Aug 14, 2012
As Markos rightly pointed out, it is increasingly becoming difficult to get SAP roles these days. Employers are now looking for multiskilled professionals with strong knowledge of the integration points.
The issue in Nigeria is mainly lack of opportunities. According to me, it appears only government MDAs can drive the growth of SAP market in Nigeria. It's just too expensive for our SMEs. Anyone aspiring to pursue an SAP career should also look at South Africa in addition to those countries mentioned by Markos. Our Indian brothers are are already 'trooping' there.

@dkolu, I understand how you feel, having walked that path before. I suggest, you approach anyone you know working in similar role in other organizations. Ask questions on how 'things' are handled in their corporate environment, then see how you can implement whatever ideas you gathered in your environment.

spicy v: Bro,

After reading or hearing your story, a lot θf people will advice you to quit, others may agree with you that you are in a predicament but still advice you to hang on as this may be a blessing in disguise but I dare say that this is an undisguised blessing! What? You may scream, but I repeat, your current job, is an undisguised blessing! Let me state my reasons.

You have identified your career vision, you know where your headed and by the grace θf God nothing can stop you but yourself. Now, knowing where you are going is not the issue, it is staying on the journey that leads to your destination! The journey may be long and frustrating but if you want to arrive at that destination, you have got to learn to be focused!

I believe that this is a great start! Oh yes it is! Truth is we always want the easy way out, the job with the fat salary, where you are always told what to do and the term initiative is non existent. This job offers you the rare opportunity θf developing leadership skills as you are constantly been given assignments that requires the use θf your initiative and you call that a problem? Please you need to reprogram your mindset and take on a fresh perspective regarding this job!

You need a new set θf attitude! Whilst the experience is grueling, do not loose sight θf the big picture! I mean don't you see yourself powering YOUR OWN audit firm in the future? Well this is part θf the price you need to pay! When I started out in my career, I took up a job and for the first 6months, there about, no salary, but when a particular international organization came around looking for someone in my field to handle a particular job, guess who was the first to be recommended! Now, I am at the stage (still growing by Gods grace) where I can give clients a bill and they are willing to pay why? Because I have paid my dues!

So please consider this another institution θf learning! Take on every assignment with fresh zeal and the mentality θf success whilst you approach clients with an enthusiastic attitude to solving their problems, give yourself a timeframe that you want to be at that organization and do NOT get distracted from your focus! In a few years from now, you will look back and say to yourself that it was well worth the effort!

Best wishes as I anticipate your tale θf success.
Cheers!!!
@spicy, excellent response!
OP, I started with 33K in similar situation but I can't thank God enough for that rare opportunity. Based on the experience from that job, I got a job with a MNC outside Nigeria ( applied from naija o). It is my view that you need a paradigm shift as advised by Spicy V. All the best!

davidylan:

Please note the highlights. I have no intentions of moving back, just wondering aloud about the possibilities.
Like Moremi said, moving back at all would only happen if a multinational is willing to transfer me on expatriate wages and be responsible for housing, schooling e.t.c. Beyond that, coming to nigeria is a waste of time, energy and resources.

Alright!
Family / Re: Relocating To Nigeria : What Budget? by skillsict: 6:16am On May 10, 2012
davidylan: why would anyone want to relocate to nigeria? undecided
If you cant make it in the west then its not likely you will make it in nigeria except of course the intention is to win government contracts by crooked means.
Security, good roads, availability of basic amenities... just a few of the things money cant buy.

"really nice thread. Seriously considering making the move to ExxonMobil here in the US myself. I just wonder if it is possible after a couple of yrs to transfer back to Nigeria."

@Davidylan, stop deceiving yourself!
You posted the above statement on the "Total Oil And Gas Workers" thread.

Relocating to Naija, is all about taking calculated risks.
Career / Re: Business Process Management Professionals In The House by skillsict: 12:55pm On May 02, 2012
I think this is similar to the Business Analyst role. In my organisation, we have different titles like Global Businessn Expert, Finance Process Coach(then one for each business area or product line), These roles serve as bridge between IT and the Business. They have solid understanding of the business as well as the Information Systems Platforms.
Similar roles exist the in the IT Organisation (department). We have Global Process Driver -Service , Global Process Driver -Projects.

@nnaiah, good points.
Getting an SAP job these days without experience is really tricky. The easiest way for someone who is not experienced to get an SAP job is when the company you work for implements SAP. It is also relatively easy to get it through internship with consulting companies ( SAP Partners).
As for retaining the job, that will depend largely on your skills, knowledge, experience, exposure, attitude and the project.

As for Nigeria exporting SAP skills, are you talking about SAP Business One?

kokoA:

Thanks so much. I am thinking of starting up my SAP career big time after my service year. I have gotten the knowledge (Basis) and hope to get the certification this june. Do you think the Lagos SAP market will be a good start for me because here in abuja SAP implementation projects are rare?
I know little or nothing about the SAP market in Nigeria as I am currently based outside of the country. In my opinion, SAP is too is expensive for most of our indigenous companies and most of the MNCs roll out SAP from their HQs or development centres located in few selected locations. I believe this might be one of reasons why implementation projects are rare in Nigeria.
We can expect few implementation projects if the government agencies decide to roll out SAP (as I believe they can afford it) or SAP as an organisation decides to have 'special' licensing for our indigenous companies.

Ok. Its time for roll call oh!

All the old hands should use this week to sign in and drop a few comments.

Depending on the momemtum or consensus by Friday, a course of action should become apparent.

So, if you are reading this and you are one of the oldies, kindly let us know you are still around.

Thanks

I am not one of the oldies, but I can share my experience.
