Nigeria’s military on Saturday claimed further gains in its counter-offensive against Boko Haram, but the group’s leader Abubakar Shekau dismissed the talk of success as “lies”. Army spokesman Sani Usman said troops destroyed more rebel enclaves and camps in the restive state of Borno, which has been worst hit by the six-year Islamist insurgency. “The fight against the terrorists in the northeast is gaining successful momentum, with most of the camps falling to the Federal might,” he said in a statement. A total of 62 people were rescued from around the town of Gwoza, which last year Boko Haram declared the headquarters of its caliphate but which it lost control of in March. Some 77 men, women and children, most of them “haggard, dejected and obviously malnourished”, also arrived in the town of Bama on Saturday, Usman said. One man picked up said he had his right hand cut off by militants in their Sambisa Forest stronghold in Borno last year, he said, adding that eight Boko Haram suspects surrendered to troops. Nigeria’s military has claimed a series of successes against Boko Haram recently and on Friday said it had rescued 90 people and dislodged Boko Haram from two villages near Gwoza. President Muhammadu Buhari in early August gave his new military commanders three months to defeat Boko Haram, after six years of violence, at least 15,000 dead and more than two million homeless. Shekau has not been seen on video since February and until an audio message last month had not spoken since March, when he proclaimed Boko Haram’s allegiance to the so-called Islamic State group. His absence sparked fresh rumours about whether he was still alive or had been deposed as leader, with other videos this year fronted by an unknown rebel under the name Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP). Shekau said in a 25-minute recording in Hausa and Arabic via social media: “They (the military) lied that they have confiscated our arms, that we have been chased out of our territories, that we are in disarray. “We are alive, I am alive, this is my voice, more audible than it was before. This is Shekau.” He added: “Buhari is a liar and has deceived you. The army spokesman is also lying. He and his footsoldiers always run helter-skelter whenever we come face to face with them… “Buhari, you once claimed that you will crush us in three months. How can you crush us?” Shekau directly refers to IS group leader Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi, to whom he says he is “loyal and subservient”. He also namechecks IS spokesman Abu-Mohammed al-Adnani and sends “greetings to the faithful in Yemen”, where there is also an IS “affiliate”. There was no indication of where or when the recording was made but it appears to have have been in recent days. Shekau talks of Buhari’s “deal with Hollande”, referring to the Nigerian president’s three-day visit to Paris earlier this week, which included talks with his French counterpart Francois Hollande. He also dismissed as untrue Buhari’s comments about “our brethren in prison”. Buhari this week said the Nigerian authorities were talking to Boko Haram prisoners in their custody and could offer them amnesty if the group hands over more than 200 schoolgirls abducted last year. The presidency has made known that President Muhammadu Buhari will not interfere in the ongoing probe of past administrations by the National Assembly. It said the Senate’s probes of the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mr. Ibrahim Lamorde, and the power sector from 1999 to 2015, were purely legislative matters and that the President could not stop them. The Senate Committee on Business and Ethics is currently probing an allegation of diversion of N1tn proceeds of corruption recovered by the EFCC. The Chief Executive Officer of Panic Alert Security Systems, Mr. George Uboh, had, in a petition submitted to the committee, accused Lamorde of diverting the money. Also, the Senate Ad-hoc committee on power is investigating expenditures in the power sector under former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo, Umaru Yar’Adua and Goodluck Jonathan. When asked if Buhari had confidence in the probes of Lamorde and the former presidents, the Senior Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, said the President could not interfere with the probes because of his respect for the principle separation of powers. Adesina, who spoke with newsmen, said, “There is separation of powers and the Senate has the power to conduct probes. Thus, the Presidency does not need to endorse or oppose any probe being carried out by the legislature. It is within their power to do so.” The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Power, Mr. Goodknows Igali, had on Monday told the Senate Ad-hoc Committee on Power that the government had spent a total of N2.7tn on the power sector from 1999 to date. He said that power generation had risen from 3,500 megawatts in 1999 to 4,600 megawatts presently. We are here to formally hand over those arrested in the process of our operations; we are pleased to hand over the 128 suspects that have been cleared by the joint intelligent core, which comprised the Army, the police and DSS. This is clear manifestation that the army is clearly professional,” Buratai declared and expressed optimism that the Boko Haram terrorism would soon come to an end. We will continue to emphasis that this terrorism will soon come to an end. The Nigeria Police Force, Lagos State Command has arrested a pastor, Mr. Abraham Sunday, for allegedly raping a 16-year-old girl, Kike in Adalemo Estate, in the Toll Gate area, on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway. According to reports Sunday, the pastor of Christ In All Nations Church in Adalemo, was arrested by the Ojokoro Police Division last Wednesday, September 2, from where he was taken to the Department of Criminal Investigation, Yaba. It was gathered that Kike, who was ill, had been taken by the pastor to a house in Adalemo Estate on August 28 for deliverance prayer when the incident occured. It was learnt that the victim’s mother, who said Sunday was a family friend, became apprehensive after she did not hear from her daughter. The matter was said to have been reported to the police by the landlord of the house where Sunday allegedly camped the teenager to rape her. A police source revealed that after Kike was rescued, she was taken to a hospital, where a medical test confirmed that she had been raped. The pastor was thereafter arrested. He said, “The pastor was like a foster father to the girl. She was ill and had gone to a hospital in the area. While returning from the hospital, she boarded the same bus with the pastor, who said he would take her to a place for prayers. “Since the suspect was a family friend, she did not doubt him. So, they went to the pastor’s apartment, where he camped and raped her for three days. The victim’s mother did not even know about the deliverance prayer. “On Monday, the landlord and some neighbours got suspicious of the pastor’s arrangement with the teenager and they alerted a non-governmental organisation in the area, which in turn invited the police. The girl was rescued and rushed to a hospital, where a medical test confirmed rape. The suspect was arrested immediately.” Our correspondent learnt that Kike and her mother were thereafter referred to the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team and the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation. The DSVRT Coordinator, Lola Viviour-Adeniyi, said the team had taken up the rehabilitation of the victim. She said, “It was an NGO, Rubies Ink, that brought the matter to our attention. “The girl was taken away for prayer. She was in the pastor’s house at the Adalemo area for three days, and during that period, he raped her. “The DSVRT reached out to the victim’s mother, but she maintained that she would not pursue any case. While admitting that the pastor defiled her daughter, the mother said the pastor had a three-month-old baby, and she did not want him to be jailed. “However, we informed the police at Ojokoro division that the state government was interested in the matter. “This prompted the transfer of the suspect to the SDCI, Yaba. “At present, the girl is undergoing treatment. She was taken to the Mirabel Centre.” The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Patricia Amadin, confirmed the pastor’s arrest. She said, “The police have arrested the suspect, and the matter has also been transferred to the SDCI, Yaba.’’ Source: http://nigeriainfohub.com/pastor-rapes-16-year-old-girl-for-three-days/ |

The national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has refused to hang the official portrait of President Muhammadu Buhari at the party’s national secretariat. Over 100 days after the President assumed office, the PDP has yet to hang his portrait at any of the offices in its Wadata House national secretariat, located at Zone 5, Abuja. The party has also said it would never put Buhari’s portraits on its walls though it has removed that of the former President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, who ruled on the platform of the PDP. “We will never hang his portrait in this office, because President Buhari is not known to our party. He is not a leader of our party and therefore we will never put his portrait here. We are a political party, very partisan and therefore, we are not going to hide that,” National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Olisa Metuh, told our correspondent on the telephone on Tuesday. Jonathan was also the presidential candidate of the former ruling party during the last general election but he was defeated by Buhari, who was the presidential candidate of the opposition All Progressives Congress. The defeat was the first to be suffered by the PDP since the return of democracy in 1999. Before now, the party has always been hanging the portraits of all the Presidents at the party’s reception area as well as the National Executive Committee and National Working Committee halls within the secretariat. Metuh said the APC also did not hang the portrait of Jonthan in its offices before the former President was defeated in the March 28 election. “Can you find out if the APC had the portrait of former President Jonathan in their office before he was defeated? That is just it,” he told our correspondent. When asked whether the party was taking its own pound of flesh, Metuh said no but that since Buhari “is not a member of our party, we won’t put his portrait here.” The APC National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Lai Mohammed, expressed shock at Metuh’s comment. “This is ridiculous and we have no comment. Let Nigerians judge the PDP on this matter,” Mohammed said. He said the PDP spokesman had a shallow understanding of the concept of opposition politics. Meanwhile, work has stopped at the new secretariat of the PDP, located in the Central Business District, Abuja. Investigations by our correspondent indicated that contractors handling the project were only doing skeletal jobs at the site. When our correspondent visited the site on Tuesday, there was no visible job being done at the site. It was gathered that the cost of the project was put at N11.5bn when it was awarded some years ago. At completion, the building is expected to have 12 floors, with two other floors serving as the car park. The party had claimed that the project was being financed from levies and contributions from members. When a fund-raising dinner was organised a few years ago, the party was able to realise about N5bn, and the project, which started more than four years ago, was to be delivered in 126 weeks. The former National Chairman of the party, under whose leadership the project commenced, Prince Vincent Ogbulafor, had then said that the complex, when completed, would strengthen the capacity of the PDP to discharge its role effectively in Africa. The party had claimed on January 5, 2015 that it was going to spend part of the N21.8bn it realised from the party’s fund-raising on the party’s secretariat. A former Minister for Information and the Chairman of the party’s Fund-raising Committee, Prof. Jerry Gana, had said the money donated to the PDP was not meant for the campaign of the defeated Jonathan alone. In what might seem as an unbelievable occurrence, but yet true as confirmed by witnesses in Benue state. A 70-years old man, Amos Oteh who was pronounced dead by doctors at a private hospital in the town on Saturday, August 26, 2015 at 4. 30 am and promptly covered him up and wheeled him into the mortuary, awaiting instructions from members of the family for embalming. When his son, Eche visited the morgue to confirm his father death ,he was surprised to see his father raise up his hand. As further proof that Otene was dead, the doctors extracted the requisite body fluid and other substances from the corpse, for post mortem examination which was to ultimately reveal the cause of death. According to the family, the hospital admitted Otene on Friday August 25 after he complained of severe toothache which had persisted for several days. As the news of Otene’s death spread, family members and other sympathisers continued to throng the hospital. On Sunday, when one of his children, Eche, who lives in Lafia visited, he was taken to the mortuary to confirm that his father had indeed passed on. According to Eche, at about 1.39 pm, “the morticians at the hospital wheeled out the trolley containing my father and unveiled the face for me to see. It was in this process that he started raising his right hand and all of us fled towards the reception area of the mortuary. From a safe distance we watched as my father lifted himself and sat on the bed and that was about seven minutes later. One of the attendants eventually summoned enough courage and approached my father who fell back on the trolley.” Eche said that the doctors ordered that the resurrected man be readmitted in the ward where some medication was administered and he was placed on fresh round of drips. He remained in the ward till Tuesday when the doctors carried out series of tests and certified Otene fit for discharge. In what may well be an apparent case of near-death experience, Otene said that, “what I remember is that I was in a vehicle and traveled a long distance. When I got there, there were many people and there was a lot of celebration and merriment and the people were happy. But they did not allow me to stay with them. They said I should go back and repeat my work. I am much better now and I thank God for everything and I also owe many thanks to the hospital for taking care of me and my family members who have been worried. I hope they will continue to be with me until I am completely free from this stress.” certified deadOtene’s wife, Elizabeth, was not aware that her husband had ‘passed’. Her children did not inform her because, according to them, she is hypertensive and they feared that informing her would have caused additional damage. According to Elizabeth, “they did not tell me that my husband died, they only told me after the resurrection and I think it is a miracle. I ask God to forgive me for doubting when they told me that he died and resurrected. After his resurrection he developed high appetite for food and he has been demanding for food. Eche, the son said,”this is God’s miracle. We glorify God’s name. God is merciful and we can’t thank Him enough for keeping my father alive. What if they had embarmed him? They did not because they were waiting for us. And when I visited the man came alive. It’s God’s work.” But medical experts say Otene could not have died in the first place and that the question of resurrection was out of the question. The only explanation, according to a Makurdi-based medical practitioner, Dr. Ameh Edace, is that, “he was in a long coma. He was in a long coma if he came back to life before embarment.” Source: http://nigeriainfohub.com/70-yrs-old-man-resurrects-in-morgue-30-hours-after-being-confirmed-dead-2/ |

The Edo state governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole has defended the alleged lopsided appointments made by President Muhammadu Buhari. In the statement signed by his chief Press secretary, Peter Okhiria, Oshiomhole said that President Muhammadu Buhari have appointment the best hands based on merits. "The Nigerian nation has come to a point where we have to use the best hands to confront the peculiarity of our problems. It is not all the time we descend to the level of geopolitical balancing; we need to employ unusual methods to solve an unusual problem. The level of decay in the country at present requires very seasoned hands and incorruptible Nigerians that will help translate the APC agenda of change for the benefit of all Nigerians. We must not reduce governance to political patronage of bread and butter. The governor congratulates the Chief of Staff, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and the Comptroller General of Customs, all of who he had very close relationship with and whose credentials stand tall among their compeers. He wishes them well in their new jobs of helping to sanitize a system that has become so rotten and corrupt as a result of manifest incompetence and mismanagement.” Source: http://nigeriainfohub.com/buhari-has-appointed-the-best-hands-and-incorruptible-nigerians-adams-oshiomhole/

The Northern Elders Forum has replied criticism expressed by Nigerians , especially the Igbo in the south-east against President Muhammadu Buhari's style of appointments. The elders called on Nigerians, especially the Igbo in the South-East, to be patient with President Muhammadu Buhari on his alleged one-sided appointments , saying the President is picking only those he can trust as close aides. The President had named only one southerner among the initial nine political appointments he made. The northerners in the first appointments are the Director-General of the Department of State Services, Lawal Daura; acting Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Mrs. Amina Zakari; the Director, Department of Petroleum Resources, Mr. Mordecai Danteni Baba Ladan; and the Accountant-General of the Federation, Ahmed Idris. Others are the President’s Chief Security Officer, Abdulrahman Mani; State Chief of Protocol, Abdullahi Kazaure; Aide-De-Camp, Lt. Col. Muhammed Abubakar; and the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu. Only the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, hails from Osun State in the South-West. The second set of appointments, which was announced through a statement by Adesina on Thursday, which had only one southerner, had caused public outcry. The appointees are Babachir David Lawal from Adamawa State, who was named Secretary to the Government of the Federation; Mr. Abba Kyari, from Borno, Chief of Staff; Col. Hameed Ali (retd.), from Kano, Comptroller-General, Nigerian Customs Service; Mr. Kure Martin Abeshi, from Nasarawa, Comptroller-General, Nigerian Immigration Service; and Suleiman Kawu, from Kano, SSA to the President on National Assembly Matters (House of Representatives). The only southerner on the list, Senator Ita Enang, was named the Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters (Senate). Speaking to newsmen on the criticisms generated by the appointments, the Vice Chairman of the NEF, Dr. Paul Unongo, said Buhari had a better understanding of Nigeria, based on his experience as a general, a former Head of State and as President of the country. He said Buhari would not work against the unity of the country, considering his experience after his military regime and three failed attempts at the Presidency. Unongo said, “I want people to look at Buhari as somebody that has gone through the rough and tumble of this nation in the political and military arena. It will be very stupid of him to just take anybody. “It is his innermost people that are going to help him to implement his clearly-stated ideological orientation against corruption; those who want to give total service. We must know he cannot entrust such responsibility very easily. “With a military coup against him, and 17 years of struggle, I think this young-old man, at 72, should be allowed to select the team he trusts most to face the security and economic challenges of Nigeria, as well as the lawlessness and impunity of the last administration.” The northern leader argued that Buhari, who waited 17 years after which he contested the presidency four times, must have had an idea of the type of country he wants Nigeria to become.” The former steel minister added, “This is the third month of his Presidency and he has not been given the chance to settle down. The people that are trying to play politics by saying that a section of the country has not been reflected (in his appointments) should tarry a little. We will be the first people to shout. He is bringing everybody in Nigeria on board. “I think it is too early. If somebody is going to appoint someone that is going to be speaking on his behalf, should he go and appoint someone that he doesn’t trust? Should he appoint people that are going to compromise? Should he appoint people that don’t believe in him as a person?” The elder statesman urged Nigerians, especially the Igbo, to wait till the President announces members of his cabinet. He further stated that it was right to remind President Buhari of “his obligations to morality,” which made him to fight the Biafran War to unite the country. Godsdey Orubebe in a continued retaliation to Oshiomhole's outbursts, calling him a clown, the former Minister of Niger Delta has fired back, calling the Edo state governor a garage boy who he will disgrace publicly. “I am proud to have been a vital instrument used by God to take the once abandoned East- West road project to an admirable 80 percent level of completion. It is unfortunate that our respected Niger Delta could produced the likes of Oshiomhole who is a garage boy that should be at the motor park as a son. I will disgrace him publicly and tell the world about his dubious deeds as governor as well as his role in the botched Third Term Bid of former President Olusegun Obasanjo. I am going to open his can of worms to the point that Nigerians will stone him if seen on the streets. I don’t talk carelessly as I have my facts to prove my points. I am not afraid of probe, am a man of integrity under whose watch the abandoned 42 bridges and 1040 culverts that was initially without designed was upgraded to the level it is today. Every reasonable Niger Deltan and Nigerians at large knows that I am the admired face of the East West road, I can stand tall, anywhere and anytime to defend my administration as well as account for every dime that was allocated for the several projects we embarked upon. My Co- ministers and every other person who was a member of the federal Executive Council under former president Jonathan’s watch can attest to the fact that I was a vessel par excellence who had result oriented contributed to make towards moving the nation forward. If he is reasonable, he will not refer to my action at the election result collation centre. This is because, history will talk about it and Nigerians will be proud of me. Yes, I had to apologise to Nigerians, particularly the youths over what I term ‘wrong approach to a just course’. Yes, I had a just case that was deliberately ignored, as one who felt cheated, and so reacted. I’m laughing at him because, if there’s anyone who should bury his face in shame, it has to be Oshiomhole who disgraced, harassed and rough handled a poor widow who he should have ordinarily accommodated. My people are very proud of me, I mean the aged, the poor and orphans. I don’t disgrace them before putting smiles on their faces. I maintain the fact that Oshiomhole is a popular villa sycophant, a garage boy and that PMB should be weary of him, if he must succeed and be really admired.”he said. The International Criminal Court ICC, have commenced investigation into the petition against the Oba of Lagos,Oba Rilwan Akiolu that was submitted to the court by Josep Onoh. On Sunday, April 5, 2015, Oba Akiolu vowed that Igbos in Lagos who voted against his preferred candidate, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, would die. Ambode of the All Progressive Congress (APC) however defeated Jimi Agbaje the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in a highly contested election. ICC on the statement and asked the world jury to investigate the threat and bring the monarch to justice. ICC had earlier in the year acknowledged receipt of Onoh’s petition and promised to give consideration to his request. According to Premium Times, Onoh petitioned ICC, saying he believes Akiolu’s threat amounted to a call for violence to be perpetrated against the Igbos in Lagos, in the event that Ambode loses the election, which he noted violates Article 20 of the international convention and elimination of all forms of racial discrimination. ICC’s Head of the Information & Evidence unit in the office of the prosecutor, M.P. Dillion, in a second correspondence dated August 13 2015 to Onoh with reference number OTP-CR-140/15, said they were analyzing the situation identified in his petition with the assistance of other related communications and other available information. Below is an excerpt of the letter from ICC to Josef Onoh. It reads.. “Under article 53 of the Rome statute, the prosecutor must consider whether there is a reasonable basis to believe that crimes within the jurisdiction of the court have been committed, the gravity of the crimes, whether national systems are investigating and prosecuting the relevant crimes, and the interests of justice.” Source: http://nigeriainfohub.com/icc-begins-investigation-of-oba-of-lagos-anti-igbo-comment/ |
Friday, August 21 was a very unfortunate and sad day for Mrs Maureen Akowe, a housewife who lost her four-months old baby to her dog. Leadership reports that Akowe had driven to a popular supermarket along Okpanam Road, Asaba to do some shopping with her 4-month-old baby and the dog inside her car. The nursing mother however left the baby, a nanny and the dog inside the car with the windows of the car down to allow cross ventilation while she goes into the supermarket. However, while the nursing mother was at it, the dog allegedly made straight for the little baby to eat her up while the nanny screamed for help but all to no avail. The nany’s shout got the attention of two security personnel at the supermarket but they came rather late as the dog had severally bitten the baby, identified Chinonso, with blood all over. Reports made it known that the dog had gone wild and was barking menacingly to scare onlookers by the time the baby’s mother got wind of the development and rushed to the scene. When the baby was taken to a nearby hospital along Nnebisi Road, the baby, which is the first child of the woman, died before getting to the hospital. The nanny said: “Madam carry the dog and baby and asked us to stay inside the car, because the dog was to be treated at the veterinary, suddenly I saw the dog moving closer to the baby and I shouted for help when the dog opened its teeth and I ran out of the car to call madam but she did not come on time”. Family sources said that the house wife had been married for 3 years without a baby before she took in for the baby that was delivered and named Chinonso. In a swift reaction, the husband of the woman amidst tears, and did not want his name on the print said: “my wife said it is the devil’s work and the devil’s work will take her out of my house, I have warned her about the dog when I notice that the dog had been behaving funny. She still kept carrying the dog claiming that she was going to give treatment to the dog. This is how the devil had ruined her”. The governor of Ekiti state, Mr Ayodele Fayose has urged President Mohammadu Buhari to tread cautiously and be mindful of the body language of those hailing him today, saying; “the president should be cautious enough to know that the former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar led National Peace Committee tactically told him to tread cautiously and be mindful of the fact that he is not heading a military government.” The governor, who said he was not unaware of the sinister plot to destabilise his government because of his strong and truthful stands on national issues, vowed not to be cowed by threat from any quarter. According to a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, the governor said; “opposition is one of the roots on which democracy stands and any President or Governor that does not want opposition will eventually become a dictator. "I want to state without fear or favour that I will continue to speak the truth no matter whose ox is gored. “Nigeria belongs to all of us and no one can intimidate me or the good people of Ekiti State who freely and overwhelmingly gave me their mandate. “Democracy as a form of government thrives on our ability to ask questions and get answers from leaders," he said. He urged the President to listen to wise counsel from the General Abdulsalami Abubakar led National Peace Committee saying; “the Peace Committee has reminded the president that he is not heading a military government and with the calibre of Nigerians in the Committee, their wise counsel should not be ignored. "These are Nigerians who don't need personal favours from the President and he should get the message very clearly that he is being told not to act as a dictator.” Governor Fayose said the President should also know that Nigerians are not interested in any honeymoon, but their well-being. His words; “rather than concentrate and make a difference within his 100 days in office, the president’s greatest achievement so far is harassment of PDP leaders, appointment of his in-law and kinsmen into sensitive positions, selective fight against corruption and arrest and detention of INEC officials who worked in States won by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).” While declaring support for the fight against corruption, Governor Fayose however said; “fighting corruption should not be synonymous with convicting Nigerians on pages of newspapers. Rather, the judiciary and other relevant agencies should be allowed to do their jobs without any direct or indirect interference from the President and his party. "Corruption must be fought in accordance with the laws of the land because going against the laws of the land and the oath taken by the President to respect the constitution in itself is corruption." An Indonesian aircraft carrying 54 people have lost contact with the air traffic control on Sunday in the remote, forested eastern Papua region, the National Search and Rescue Agency (BASARNAS) said, with search efforts hampered by failing light as night falls. "We can't confirm it has crashed. We can say contact has been lost with the plane," BASARNAS chief Bambang Soelystyo told Reuters by telephone. "It's a Trigana airline plane carrying 54 people including five crew. We are working to get more details." According to the official BASARNAS Twitter account, the aircraft, a short-haul ATR 42-300 airliner belonging to Trigana Air Service and built in France and Italy, was carrying 44 adult passengers, five crew and five children and infants. The plane was flying between Jayapura's Sentani Airport and Oksibil, due south of Jayapura, the capital of Papua province. The agency's Jayapura office was coordinating the search, a separate tweet read as dusk set in the tropics. Air transport is commonly used in Papua, Indonesia's easternmost province, where land travel is often impossible. It was not immediately clear if search efforts would continue into the night in the densely forested mountainous region where the aircraft was traveling. According to the Aviation Safety Network, an online database, the ATR 42-300 had its first flight 27 years ago. ATR is a joint venture between Airbus (AIR.PA) and Alenia Aermacchi, a subsidiary of Italian aerospace firm Finmeccanica (SIFI.MI). Trigana has been on the EU blacklist of banned carriers since 2007. Airlines on the list are barred from operating in European airspace due to either concerns about safety standards, or concerns about the regulatory environment in their country of registration. The airline has a fleet of 14 aircraft, according to the airfleets.com database. These include 10 ATR aircraft and four Boeing 737 classics. These have an average age of 26.6 years, according to the database. Trigana has had 14 serious incidents since it began operations in 1991, according to the Aviation Safety Network’s online database. Excluding this latest incident, it has written off 10 aircraft. Indonesia has a patchy aviation safety record and has seen two major plane crashes in the past year, including an AirAsia flight that went down in the Java Sea, killing all on board. That crash prompted the government to introduce regulations aimed at improving safety. Indonesia's president promised a review of the aging air force fleet in July after a military transport plane crashed in the north of the country, killing more than 100 people. The were great surprises yesterday when a Lagos-based lawyer (names withheld) was caught touching a nine-year-old girl’s breasts and private part in the premises of Tinubu Magistrate’s Court, Lagos. The victim, who was said to have just arrived the country from England, had accompanied her grandmother, who had a civil case in court and needed a lawyer. At the court, she enquired from a court clerk of a lawyer who could help her handle the case and was referred to the said lawyer. The lawyer allegedly lured the little girl to an alley within the court premises and fondled her private part. The cry of the little girl attracted the grandmother, who asked her what the matter was and she started pointing to the lawyer, saying that he fondled her breast and also touched her private part. According to eyewitnesses, after the court proceedings, the lawyer was seen walking around the court premises with the little girl and when he was asked who the girl was to him, he said she was his daughter. He was also alleged to have carried the girl on his laps and gave his mobile phone to her to play with, while he was busy touching her breast and fingering her. The eyewitnesses said it was when the girl started crying and went to report to her grandmother, who started slapping the lawyer that they got to know what happened. The noise, which disrupted the court proceedings, brought the matter to Chief Magistrate K. B. Ayeye’s attention. The little girl was said to have told the Chief Magistrate what the lawyer did to her. The magistrate ordered that the lawyer be taken to Lion Building Police Station, Lagos Island. The Rivers State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, on Wednesday, debunked claims that his administration was attacking the former governor of the state, Mr Rotimi Amaechi as to coarse the President, Muhammadu Buhari not to hand over any ministerial portfolio the erstwhile governor. Wike explained that rather than worry about the possible appointment of Amaechi into President Buhari’s cabinet, he was interested in how the state’s funds were managed under the former governor. He pointed out that a situation where nothing was left in the state’s treasury on his assumption of office as governor was annoying, worrisome and unacceptable. Wike, who spoke through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Opunabo Inko-Taria, told newsmen in Port Harcourt that it was illogical for anybody to claim that his complaint about corruption in the immediate past administration had any link with Amaechi likelihood of getting a federal appointment. “So, what is he (Ameachi) going to do to him (Wike) as a minister or Federal Government appointee? Wike has not told anybody that he does not want President Buhari to appoint Amaechi as a minister. He has never said it; these are just insinuations and innuendos. “If Mr. President, known for his mantra of zero tolerance for corruption; is saying that he is not going to appoint anybody with a stained image as a member of his cabinet and Rivers people are saying that Rotimi Amaechi is not qualified for an appointment, there is no problem with that. “But the truth is that paint Amaechi black, if he (Buhari) does not want to appoint him (Amaechi), he will not. Paint Amaechi white, if the President is not interested in him, he will not appoint him. “The talk about whether Amaechi should be appointed into Buhari’s cabinet is just the feeling from Rivers’ people and not the governor himself. He has never discussed the issue of whether Amaechi should be appointed by Mr. President or not. “The governor is more interested in how the funds of Rivers State were spent; whether they were judiciously spent or they were just frittered away. That is the interest because it is annoying that when we took over, we met an empty treasury,” Wike said. He expressed worry that those responsible for emptying the state’s treasury were the same people accusing him of taking N30bn loan within a month. He said, “They forgot that you are supposed to pay salaries; you are supposed to open the judiciary. The governor gave the judiciary N300m for takeoff and he also had to pay some of the students abroad who were owed allowances. Civil servants, pensioners and footballers, who were owed salaries, were paid.” Source: http://nigeriainfohub.com/wike-i-am-not-worried-if-amaechi-becomes-minister-in-buhari-administration/ |

There are little groups (of Boko Haram members) scattered throughout east Nigeria, on the border with Cameroon. It is within our power to definitively overcome Boko Haram. The war will be short, with the setting up of the regional force, it will be over by the end of the year.
