This month, the world moved a step closer to the defeat of Boko Haram, the jihadist group that has terrorized hundreds of thousands in the northern states of Nigeria. In one of my first acts since taking office as president six weeks ago, I have replaced the heads of Nigeria’s army, navy and air force. Our new military leadership has not been chosen because of their familiarity with those in government, as was too often the case in the past, but on their track records and qualifications alone. These new military leaders will be based in Borno State in northern Nigeria, where the headquarters of the armed services has been relocated. This shift of resources and command directly to the front line, in addition to the replacement of the head of the State Security Service, Nigeria’s intelligence organization, and a new emphasis on working in partnership with our neighbors, has equipped us to take the fight directly to Boko Haram. Already we are beginning to see a degrading of Boko Haram’s capabilities as a fighting force. In recent weeks, it appears to have shifted away from confronting the military directly to an increase in attacks on civilian areas, as we saw only last week when an elderly woman and 10-year-old girl blew themselves up at a Muslim prayer gathering in northeastern Nigeria. We should not be confused by this change, hateful as it is: It does not mean that Boko Haram is succeeding in its aims — it shows that it is losing. While we work to defeat the terrorists, I ask the people of Nigeria and the world for resolve and fortitude. The campaign we will wage will not be easy; it may not be swift. We should expect stages of success and also moments when it may appear that our advances have been checked. But no one should have any doubt as to the strength of our collective will or my commitment to rid this nation of terror and bring back peace and normalcy to all affected areas. Similarly, my determination should not be underestimated in other matters. This includes instilling good governance and tackling the scourge of corruption that has held Nigeria back for too long. As I meet with President Obama today — the first time a president of the United States will encounter a Nigerian counterpart following the peaceful transfer of power in a contested election in our history — I will be discussing my plans for critical reforms. So, too, will I discuss why the formation of my administration is taking time and, crucially, why it must. Already there are voices saying these changes are taking too long — even though only six weeks have passed since my inauguration. I hear such calls, but this task cannot and should not be rushed. When cabinet ministers are appointed in September, it will be some months after I took the oath of office. It is worth noting that Obama himself did not have his full Cabinet in place for several months after first taking office; the United States did not cease to function in the interim. In Nigeria’s case, it would neither be prudent nor serve the interests of sound government to have made these appointments immediately on my elevation to the presidency; instead, Nigeria must first put new rules of conduct and good governance in place. I cannot stress how important it is to ensure that this process is carried out correctly, just as it has been crucial to first install the correct leadership of the military and security services before we fully take the fight to Boko Haram. There are too few examples in the history of Nigeria since independence where it can be said that good management and governance were instituted at a national level. This lack of a governance framework has allowed many of those in charge, devoid of any real checks and balances, to plunder. The fact that I now seek Obama’s assistance in locating and returning $150 billion in funds stolen in the past decade and held in foreign bank accounts on behalf of former, corrupt officials is testament to how badly Nigeria has been run. This way of conducting our affairs cannot continue. Indeed, the failure of governance, it can be argued, has been as much a factor in Nigeria’s inability thus far to defeat Boko Haram as have been issues with the military campaign itself. So the path we must take is simple, even if it is not easy: First, instill rules and good governance; second, install officials who are experienced and capable of managing state agencies and ministries; and third, seek to recover funds stolen under previous regimes so that this money can be invested in Nigeria for the benefit of all of our citizens. We seek the support and partnership of the United States in these tasks. The importance of the fight against terrorism and corruption in Nigeria, Africa’s most powerful economy and largest populace, cannot be underestimated. Our allies can provide much-needed military training and intelligence as our soldiers take the war effort to Boko Haram. Similarly, we look to U.S. businesses as well as the Obama administration to help develop governance initiatives that can ensure that Nigeria’s wealth benefits all its people, not just a few. By taking these steps, we will be positioned to benefit from increased investment — particularly in energy and electricity — from the United States. I was elected on a platform of change. I know this is what the people of Nigeria desire more than anything else. I know they are impatient for action. I realize the world waits to see evidence that my administration will be different from all those that came before. Yet reforming my country after so many years of abuse cannot be achieved overnight. In our campaigns against both Boko Haram and corruption, we should remain steadfast and remember, as it is said: “Have patience. All things become difficult before they become easy.” Source: http://nigeriainfohub.com/buhari-ministers-will-be-appointed-in-september/ |
In an interview with Vanguard, presidential media adviser Femi Adeshina confirmed that president Buhari is planning to probe the administration of the former president, Goodluck Jonathan. According to Femi Adeshina, Buhari has said that money in billions of dollars will be recovered. But you know the world is too small a place for anybody to hide if you are running from justice. You will be fished out. So, there is no need that you say they should not be heading for jail if eventually the law goes after them. Very few countries can they hide in and how long will they hide? So, it doesn’t mean that anybody that has ill gotten wealth will not regurgitate it, they will. Remember when he went to Germany for the G7 summit, he met with President Obama and Obama told him to just give us information on where the loot is hidden and we will help you recover it and the government has been working on that. So, that shows that looters will never go free" he said Asked if Buhari plans to probe administrations before GEJ , Adeshina said, "He can’t afford to go too deep into the past or else it will be destructive for his administration. There are some things you can’t close your eyes to while you don’t want to shine the torchlight into the dark recesses of our past; immediate past where things are evident. The Yoruba have a saying that the corpse we buried, the leg is sticking out and, if you bury a corpse and the leg is sticking out, you can’t pretend. When there are trails all over of the monies in billions and trillions, then a responsible government can’t close its eyes to that. [NyTimes & Fox News]Nigeria's government says it has banned Radio Biafra because it is unlicensed but the station dedicated to creating a breakaway state remained on the airwaves Thursday. People in southeastern Nigeria confirmed the station is broadcasting in the area that is home to the Igbo people. The Igbos fought a civil war to form an independent nation called Biafra in the late 1960s that killed about one million people, mostly Igbos from conflict-induced famine. Unresolved causes of the war and results including the appropriation of property that has not been returned remain a sore point and groups including Radio Biafra continue to claim the tribe is discriminated against and to agitate for independence. Many Igbos who fled into exile have not returned home. Eleven pro-Biafra activists were arrested last year on charges of treason. Earlier this year, the Biafra Zionists Federation called for Ibgos to boycott presidential elections because the High Court refused to give them bail after months in jail awaiting trial. On Wednesday, Radio Biafra broadcast an alleged interview with the BBC Hausa service in which it claimed a voice said to be that of newly installed President Muhammadu Buhari made derogatory comments about the Igbo. Buhari's office denied that, and the BBC also denied having such an interview. The Ministry of Information announced Tuesday that it had "successfully jammed the signals" of Radio Biafra. But the station remained on the air with call-in shows where listeners discuss issues confronting their region and their desire to break away from Nigeria. The 2015 general elections in Nigeria have come and gone, but unfortunately the exercise left behind, some bitter taste in the mouths and ninds of certain individuals and groups in the country. This has further divided the country along ethnic and religious lines. Nigeria’s New Telegraph, analyses the situation that the country was left in after the aftermath of an election many say would have been disastrous if not for the magnanimity of former president Goodluck Jonathan. Read further below… The 2015 general elections have come and gone leaving prints on the sands of Nigeria’s history. A large number of Nigerians actively got involved just to ensure their candidates emerged victorious. Many were desirous to see the country led by the best hands irrespective of religion and ethnicity; some others were motivated by monetary gains and gifts they received from the contestants with little interest in the quality of leaders that emerged winners. The latter group could only wish that elections were conducted more regularly so they could amass wealth even at the detriment of the country. One fact that stands out is that the political consciousness has risen among Nigerians and more prominently among the youths. The divide is no longer restricted to one’s ethnicity or religion but consciously or sub-consciously, Nigerians are torn apart politically. The youths have not helped matters with the constant vitriolic exchange of comments on social media with each trying to shove his opinion down the throat of others. In today’s Nigeria you are either agitating for your ethnic group to be adequately represented; lobbying hard to have someone of the same religious faith at the helm of affairs or pushing beyond boundaries that your party takes it all and painfully this is the legacy our leaders are bequeathing to the youths. This has led to increased tension among youths creating unnecessary enmity and exhibiting a high level of intolerance leading to friends blocking themselves on social media and deleting accounts of others who do not share their political ideology. Another aspect of the social media drama is the verbal attack and direct insults youths pour on opposition leaders who are old enough to father them but in the words of an angry friend, “What respect do you show an elder who has stolen from you?’’ One can only admit that the leaders have failed the youths and present happenings are the realities of a failed state. For some of us, this burning anger expressed by the youths would only be justified if they have sincere motives but unfortunately the politicians understand the game and know the carrots to dangle to make the youths their stooge. Unfortunately some of us have refused to put the events of the last election behind us instead we prayerfully anticipate failure from those with good intentions because we do not share any affiliation. Nigerians must look past the results of the election and in the Jonathanian spirit; support the men with good intentions irrespective of their divide. If we must achieve the Nigeria of our dreams, we must accept the fact that we are first Nigerians and as a Nigerian, I belong to any state under the Federal Republic of Nigeria.Meanwhile, there are indication that some Yoruba elders regreted supporting President Muhammadu Buhari in the last election. Two suicide bombers killed at least three people and injured 16 in the capital Borno state on Saturday, the latest in a string of deadly attacks by the suspected deadly Boko Haram Islamist militants. The two women tried to get into a hospital but were stopped by security guards at the gate and blew themselves up, witnesses said. “We evacuated the charred bodies of the two security guards, another civilian and the two bombers,” said Auwal Mohammed, a member of the community in Molai, where the hospital is situated. Muhammadu Buhari, the new president of Africa’s most populous nation and biggest economy, made Maiduguri the command centre for the military campaign against Islamist militant group Boko Haram after being inaugurated last month. More than 100 people have been killed in northeast Nigeria in the past few weeks in a spate of bombings, mostly in Maiduguri. A source at the mortuary of Borno State hospital in Maiduguri confirmed it had received three corpses after the blast. Another hospital source said 16 people injured in the attack had been brought in. Buhari has held talks with counterparts in neighbouring countries to set up a joint force to tackle the insurgents and he is planning to visit Cameroon later this month to discuss deeper collaboration. Buhari is also due to visit U.S. President Barack Obama in Washington on July 20 and the fight against Boko Haram is likely to be top of the agenda. Boko Haram controlled territory the size of Belgium in the northeast at the start of the year but has been pushed out of most of it by the Nigerian army, backed by troops from Chad, Niger and Cameroon. The immediate past Minister/Deputy Chairman, National Planning Commission (NPC), Dr. Abubakar Sulaiman has faulted President Buhari’s claim that the immediate past government left behind an empty treasury. Pres. Buhari had in a media parley with state House correspondents on Monday June 22nd calimed that his administration met ‘virtually an empty treasury’. In a statement released yesterday June 23rd, Dr Suleiman said the Good luck administration left behind $30 billion in the national treasury. He argued that saying the past government did not leave behind any money implies that revenue generating agencies of the government seized to work before and after the Goodluck administration ended on May 29th . “Government can’t tell us that there is no Excess Crude Account (ECA), Sovereign Wealth Fund (SWF) or are we saying the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIR) and related agencies had not in the last one month been generating revenue? Until they are able to prove they had no receipts from these government agencies in the last one month before Nigerians can now buy into Mr. President’s claims of an empty treasury. Money made by government is meant to be spent, and this the immediate past administration did responsibly. Every government operates on deficit even in the so-called western world, including the US which today remains one of the largest debtor nations in the world. Is it not on record that President Obama inherited $3 trillion debt, a collapsed banking sector and mortgage industry, yet he never raised any alarm. None of these has happened in Nigeria under Jonathan. Under Jonathan, Nigeria became the largest Africa economy and 26th in the world amidst deadly security challenges and dwindling international prices of oil. In spite of all these, the Federal Government never owed salary. Upon inception of Jonathan’s administration, it is on record that the price of oil at the global stage was over $100 per barrel and at the close of the administration, it dropped to $46. Yet, there wasn’t collapse of government and federal civil servants were paid as at when due. It will be misleading, therefore, for our respected President Muhammadu Buhari and indeed the ruling APC to claim to have met an empty treasury. Aspiration to governance is a call to meeting and confronting challenges headlong. So, we urge the APC-led government to hit the ground running as promised Nigerians by confronting the challenges. We are not in doubt of the capability of Mr. President to do it. He should, therefore, get to business, put in place structures and personnel to redeem the pledges made to Nigerians.” Source: http://nigeriainfohub.com/former-minister-faults-buharis-claim-of-meeting-an-empty-treasury-says-goodluck-left-30/

A new ‘smart condom’ was created by a group of teenage students for the Teen Tech awards, which they claim will glow different colors if it detects an STD! The creators said the condom will work with a layer of chemicals on the surface that will attach to bacteria and viruses from STDs. Here are the colors that the condom will change if STDs are detected: “glow green for chlamydia, yellow for herpes, purple in the presence of the human papillomavirus which causes genital warts, and blue for syphilis.” Not only will the “smart condoms” make you aware if your partner might have an STD, one of the designers explained: “We wanted to create something that makes detecting harmful STIs safer than ever before, so that people can take immediate action in the privacy of their own homes without the invasive. President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday said his administration had received firm assurance from the United States and other countries recover and return funds stolen from Nigeria. According to a statement by the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, the President said it was now up to Nigeria to provide the international community with the facts and figures needed to drive the recovery effort. He said: “In the next three months, our administration will be busy getting those facts and the figures to help us recover our stolen funds in foreign countries,” Adesina quoted the President as saying. The president made this statement to members of the Northern Traditional Rulers Council led by the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. Citing the report submitted by the Ahmed Joda-led transition committee, President Buhari said that several revenue-generating institutions in the country had been compromised. In regards to insecurity, the President said traditional rulers would play a key role in stemming terrorism and insurgency in the country. This, he said, they would do by assisting the government with cost-effective intelligence gathering. Buhari also assured the traditional rulers that his administration was working hard to end insecurity and terrorism in the country in the shortest possible time with the cooperation of neighbouring countries and the international community. Acknowledging that Nigerians expected a lot from his administration, the President appealed for patience and understanding while his government works diligently to speedily overcome the huge national challenges it inherited. The Sultan had earlier presented the Northern Traditional Rulers’ recommendations to the President on issues related to national development. Unknown gunmen on Monday June 22 shot dead the Lagos state Coordinator of The Lord’s Chosen Charis-matic Revival Ministries, Pastor Chukwuemeka Okpokpo, at Apple Junction, Amuwo Odofin area of the state. According to a report by Vanguard, the gunmen, in a motorcycle, trailed the pastor from a bank where he had gone to withdraw N3million for the church, fired shots into the air, which sent people scampering for safety. Witnesses said Pastor Okpokpo tried to escape when it became obvious that he was the target. He reportedly slowed down on reaching a bad spot in the road, and that was when the hoodlums shot at the tyres of the Chosen vehicle he was driving, which caused the car to stop. One of the gunmen then got down from their motorbike, walked to the vehicle and shot Pastor Okpokpo in the stomach. He was said to have waited to ensure that Okpokpo was no longer breathing before he took the nylon bag containing the money, went back to his two colleagues in the motorbike and they all took off. Residents were said to have rushed to the scene then raised an alarm when they found out that the victim was wearing the Lord’s Chosen reflective jacket. Some of them were said to have alerted members of the church, who rushed him to the church’s clinic at Ijesha. When news of the tragedy filtered in, those who knew him wept uncontrollably. It was learnt that a prayer session aimed at resurrecting him reportedly took place between 12.30p.m. and 8p.m. Some of the church members thought that the gunmen could have been hired assassins and not robbers. The Lagos State Police Command said it had begun investigation into the murder. Okpokpo’s body has been taken to his home town in Amizi, Ikwuano Local Government Area of Umuahia of Abia. The governor of Osun state, Rauf Aregbesola has expressed his sadness and pain over his inability to pay his workers their monthly salaries for about seven months now. While delivering a Ramadan Lecture at the Women Development Centre, Abuja yesterday June 22nd, Aregbesola said his administration borrowed N25billion from banks to support the federal allocations to pay salaries but that the banks have since stopped lending the state money. “It is extremely painful that I cannot pay salary. It is painful that I have to be in this condition. I am not helpless because I have Allah and the people with me. And whoever has Allah and the people has everything. I didn’t envisage that 400,000 barrels of crude oil would be stolen daily. But the whipping boys must be the governors and I am the ‘Chief’ of the whipping boys,” he said. He added that the state’s wage bill was N3.5 billion monthly and that his administration has found it difficult to pay due to the dwindling allocation in spite of increase in the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) from N900 million to N8 billion annually. President Muhammadu Buhari Monday said that he inherited a “virtually empty treasury” with debts running into hundreds of millions of Dollars and appealed to the media to explain the true position to Nigerians so that “they won’t match on us”. The President who spoke while meeting with members of the State House Press Corps said it was a disgrace that Nigeria is not able to pay workers salaries adding that this was as a result of bad management. According to him, there was already a lot of pressure on his government due to the huge expectations of Nigerians on what they desire from the administration. While calling on the media to cooperate with his administration, President Buhari said he choose Femi Adesina to be his Adviser because he is ‘one of the best’. “It is not by accident that I got the best of you to be the special adviser, one of the 15 aides I had to get clearance from the Senate. He is one of the best President of the guild that I can have as special advisers. I brought one of the best of you so that he can consistently defend me against you. “Whether my job is a difficult one or easy it is up to him, but I’m here to thank you in advance for what good and ill you are going to do to me. “I have to quickly come and see you and welcome you to this place. I hope what happened of recent between the former president and one of you (the seizure of the accreditation of the Radio Germany reporter) will not happen between me and you. “I hope we are starting and this culture developed, of 100 days is bringing so much pressure with treasury virtually empty, with debts in millions of dollars, with state workers and even federal workers not paid their salaries. It is such a disgrace for Nigeria. I think Nigeria should be in a position to even pay it’s workers. This is bad management that we find ourselves in, we really need your help to protect us from people before they match on us” he said. For members of the State House Press Corps, it is a first time that they would be meeting the president, starting from President Obasanjo up to President Goodluck Jonathan. The Movement of the Emancipation of Niger Delta, MEND, has threatened to resume militant activities if members of the National Assembly receive any outrageous allowances. Spokesman of the group Jomo Gbomo said this while speaking to newsmen yesterday June 21st. “These wicked individuals appropriate to themselves huge and absurd salaries and allowances at the expense of the millions of hapless Nigerians, who have not been paid for months, their salaries, pensions and other benefits they deserve. The Niger Delta region, where the bulk of revenue that sustains the nation comes from, continues to suffer neglect, environmental degradation and lack, made worse by the very corrupt and visionless past government of Goodluck Jonathan and his cronies, some of who still shamelessly parade themselves on national television and other media platforms as ‘Niger Delta Activists’. Nigerians refuse to tolerate this ostentatious lifestyle of our lawmakers, whose main objective, it seems, is to enrich themselves and carelessly spend scarce resources. The Niger Delta people refuse to pamper and cater for the needs of these thieving Assembly rogues to their detriment. If the lawmakers refuse to make the necessary adjustments needed to accompany the needs of the masses and the Niger Delta region, it may lead to the resumption of hostilities. A family member who spoke to the Chronicle outside Ryan’s family’s home nearby said: “We are trying to cope with this the best we can.” Their family dog, called Tricky, is being kept in kennels and is expected to be destroyed. Northumbria Police said a 30-year-old man had been arrested in connection with the incident. “We are carrying out enquiries to establish the circumstances.” A family member, who did not want be identified, said the baby’s mother was not in the house at the time of the attack, and added that she never left her son alone with the dog. The source said she had been at a family event following a bereavement, and had returned to find the distressing scene. Neighbours yesterday spoke of their shock at the death of Reggie, who is believed to have four brothers and sisters. One, who did not wish to be named, said: “I know terriers very well. I think the dog had become jealous of the baby and that is why this has happened. “It was Ryan’s dog as far as I’m aware. He is a lovely lad, hard-working and an excellent father. He will be devastated.” Criminal psychologist Paul Tweddle, 50, who lives opposite the family in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, said: “They are a caring couple in their 30s and are a lovely family. This is a complete tragedy. “I see the terrier from time to time. Sometimes I see it clambering at the fence and it gets out so I shout to Ryan and he comes and gets it. “It is a tiny dog and I cannot say whether or not it is dangerous. Sometimes appearances can be deceptive. “I am so shocked. It should be such a happy time with a new baby. I have children myself, so you can imagine how I am feeling.” Another neighbour, Denise Haley, 59, is grandmother to a six-week-old baby called TJ. She said: “Maria was in the house a few weeks ago with Redgie. She is a lovely girl and I simply do not know how she will cope with this tragedy. “I am scared of any dog but that dog seemed okay. It is a tiny dog and brown in colour. “I am in total shock – me and my daughter have been really upset about it. We grabbed TJ straight away and gave him a huge hug.” Source: http://nigeriainfohub.com/three-weeks-old-baby-killed-by-a-dog-in-uk/

Emmanuel Kalejaiye, the 21 year old Nigerian man who stabbed his own mother, 41 year old Tolu Kalejaiye, to death at their home in the UK has been sentenced to life imprisonment. Emmanuel who has been diagnosed with a mental ailment, stabbed his mother 40 times in the head, face, neck, upper limbs & hands during a frenzied knife attack in Sept2013. His mum until her death was an accountant with the Camden Council in England. When interrogated, Emmanuel admitted to killing his mother . “I admit killing my mother by stabbing her. I did this because she subjected me to a lifetime of physical and mental abuse. She used the Bible to rationalize what she did to me. I believe she manipulated and brainwashed me. I have been very depressed for a long time. I have tried to overcome it but I couldn’t take it anymore”. A UK court had in April 2014 found Emmanuel guilty of manslaughter and not murder due to his mental ailment. At a resumed hearing of the case on Thursday June 18th, a telephone message she sent with her phone to her boyfriend, Leo Shogunle, when she was being attacked by her son was played. In the audio, she was heard calling on her son to stop stabbing her until the telephone became chillingly quiet. Her boyfriend raced to the house to find her in the pool of her own blood. Medical experts told the court that Emmanuel has been suffering from Chronic depression. Source: http://nigeriainfohub.com/nigeria-man-who-murdered-his-mother-in-uk-sentenced-to-life-imprisonment/

3 friends Habeeb Adisa (25), Kehinde Aderinoye (25) and Ilyas Ogundimu (27) raped one of their female neighbours, a young woman, who was a close friends. This incident happened in a neighbourhood in Iju area of Lagos. The victim, 19-year-old Adenike (not real name), a hair stylist, said she summoned the courage to speak about her ordeal because she did not want the3 friends to go free and do the same to someone else. Narrating how she was violated by the three men whom she trusted most in their neighbourhood, Adenike said that there was no way she could have suspected that within the 2 years she had known them, that those 3 could have ever done what they did to her. Calmly, but with a lot of anger and pain showing in her eyes, Adenike said, “I became friends with them as neighbours two years ago when my mother first rented an apartment in the area. “Kehinde began to make advances to me. But I told him we were friends and did not want to be in a relationship with him. I have always rejected his advances. “Later he would tell Habeeb and Ilyas to approach me to appeal on his behalf to accept his proposal, but I made them to understand that I could not go out with him. But we still talked and sat together in the neighbourhood as friends. “Adisa Unknown to Adenike, the gentle disposition of her three friends was just a façade for the plan they had hatched on how to sexually assault her. On Wednesday, June 17, 2015, an opportunity presented itself for the rapist friends to put their plan to work. Adenike said, “In the morning of that day, around 9.30am, I went over to Kehinde’s house like I usually did sometimes when I had nothing to do at home. I trusted them completely and usually went there to while away the time. “Habeeb and Ilyas were there also. We were just talking when Habeeb suddenly came to me and picked me up. He threw me on the bed and I told him that I didn’t like that kind of play. I said, ‘If this is part of your playful habit I am not up for it.’ “But as he threw me on the bed, before I could stand up, he lay on me and pinned me down firmly. Kehinde quickly came over and started to remove my underwear. That was when I knew what they wanted to do. I struggled with them but they pinned me down and took turns to rape me. “When I was screaming, one of them quickly went to the CD player, which was on at the time and turned on the music to maximum volume so that it would drown out my voice.”When they finished, the three friends smiled at what they had done. They told Adenike to pretend that what happened to her was a mere sexual encounter. “They told me to just forget what happened and keep it between the four of us. But I realised that if I was afraid of stigma and kept it to myself, they would walk free and even boast to their friends about what they did to me. They would surely do it to someone else,” Adenike said. Bruised and battered, Adenike summoned the courage to approach someone she trusted in the neighbourhood and narrated what happened to her. She was immediately advised to go to the Iju Police Division and report the incident. As soon as she reported, some landlords in the area rose in the men’s defence. Adenike’s mother said that because the parents of the rapists are landlords in the area, they first threatened her that if she decided to make the issue a police case, she would lose. But on Thursday, after the police had arrested the suspects, Punch correspondent witnessed as families of the culprits and other residents of the area came out to the police station to beg Adenike’s mother. Adenike’s case highlights the increasing incidence of sexual offences in Nigeria, where majority of sexual offences go unreported. On Friday, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, Mr. Kenneth Nwosu, said that the suspects had been charged to court. source: http://nigeriainfohub.com/teenage-girl-narrates-how-she-was-raped-by-three-of-her-friends/ |
For the first time in more than a century, a woman will finally get space on the nation’s paper currency but she may have to share it with a man. The $10 bill, up for a redesign in 2020, will feature a female face, Treasury Secretary Jack Lew announced Wednesday. He’s also considering keeping Alexander Hamilton, the current resident of the bill and the nation’s first Treasury secretary, on some of the notes. The decision to change the ten-spot came as feminist groups have been pushing for a woman on the currency in 2020 to mark the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, which gave women the right to vote. Sharing space with Hamilton who not only conceived the nation’s financial system but also served as a protagonist in the nation’s first sex scandal wasn’t exactly what they had in mind. A nonprofit organization, Women On 20s (Slogan: “A woman’s place is on the money”), has been campaigning instead to get rid of Andrew Jackson, the nation’s seventh president, whose face appears on the $20 bill. Jackson’s record of removing Native Americans from their land and his opposition to the central banking system made him a good candidate to be yanked, they’ve argued. Harriet Tubman was the winner of a poll the organization conducted to determine which woman should replace Jackson. U.S. currency has rarely undergone major redesigns, but in 2013, the $10 bill was chosen for a remake partly to beef up protections against counterfeit threats, the Treasury said. Lew said putting a woman on a bill had been under consideration well before his tenure at Treasury began, and President Barack Obama endorsed the idea last year, when he called it a “pretty good idea” during a July speech about the economy in Kansas City. The Obama administration will be considering nominations of prominent women in U.S. history over the coming months and expects to announce its selection at the end of the summer, the Treasury said. Lew said it was “personally very important” to him to preserve Hamilton’s place of honor on the $10. So whether it’s by printing $10s with different faces, or with multiple portraits on a single one, the woman will have to share with Hamilton. In fact, Hamilton shared his bed with more than one woman making him one of the first subjects of a political sex scandal. While his wife, Elizabeth, and kids were staying with relatives, Hamilton began an affair with a young woman named Maria Reynolds in 1791. He was secretary of the Treasury at the time, and Reynolds and her husband started extorting money from Hamilton. Hamilton eventually confessed to the affair in full detail in a pamphlet that also featured letters between him and his mistress. source: http://nigeriainfohub.com/a-woman-to-appear-on-10-bill-for-the-first-time-in-over-a-century/ |
