Five strange things people do on trains January 18, 2015 Written by Olabisi Kehinde Fresh from a train ride, Olabisi Kehinde recounts some of the weird and out-of-the- world activities that some passengers engage in on board. A quick train ride from Lagos-Ijoko will surely shock any passenger who is new to the route. Lots of weird activities, ranging from smoking, drinking, gambling to, wait for it, browsing. Recently this reporter rode on the train from Apapa (Lagos) to Ijoko (Ogun state) to avoid the road traffic that had become intolerable going into the New Year. The first shock this reporter received was that a good number of the passengers seemed to board the train for the simple fact that it gives them an opportunity to several other drinking friends and engage in endless drinking spree all through the journey. Best place to drink Interestingly, a couple boarded the train at Yaba station. You could tell that they were lovebirds and not a few heads turned as they negotiated their ways to empty seats in a corner, even as they chatted endlessly. Not long after, the man excused himself and up. But after waiting endlessly for a while, the wife stood up to look for her husband. But along the line, she met his friend, who told her that her husband was on top of the moving train drinking. Asked why he had to go all the way to the top of the train to drink, her man told her that it is the best place to drink, because he feels the breeze and see things around him. Best place to browse After a while, this reporter also observed that some guys were migrating to the top of the moving train to browse. Perplexed, she approached one of them, Ebube to ask why. “That is the best place to browse” he replied. He said it is always a great feeling and preferable to browse at the top of the train, because the network is always good and really nice. It does not matter to them how dangerous this great adventure is and that they could lose their lives in the process. In fact, investigation revealed that many lives have been lost in the course of this reckless action, and it is a wonder that others have not learnt any lessons. Somehow, they always believe that are safe. Reserving seats for those still at home Another funny but annoying habit is the fact that some people purchase multiple tickets mainly to reserve seats for their friends and families, most of whom might still be in bed (in case of early morning rides) or yet to get to the station or waiting for the train at the next stations. In the process, legitimate passengers who are qualified to sit are made to stand, frustrated, while new entrants stroll in to claim the seats reserved for them. This has also resulted in crises. One passenger recalled how one evening, a man kept a ticket on the seat to reserve it for a passenger yet to get on board and a group of guys who felt enough was enough flung the tickets aside and took their seats. An argument ensued, which eventually led to a fracas. Corrupting the checkers This reporter also discovered that some criminally-minded passengers have formed the bait of tipping the train checkers, thereby corrupting them in the process. A passenger actually chipped in that most of the checkers always end up collecting the tip, as it is either they collect or such passengers ride free. “They prefer to tip the checkers with N100, rather than buy the ticket of N230, thereby shortchanging the railway corporation.” One passenger chipped in. Dangerous hangers This might be a familiar sight to a lot of people, but it is nevertheless dangerous and an eyesore. Passengers have been known to fall off, while a particular story was told of how one of the men who was hanging, was snatched by a thick branch in the middle of nowhere, as the train sped off and flung to the body of the heavy steel machine. Needless to say, neither the train nor the other passengers stopped to take another look. Share

JANUARY 18, 2015 BY ARUKAINO UMUKORO AND GBENGA ADENIJI 5 Comments Pastor T. B Joshua In this piece, ARUKAINO UMUKORO and GBENGA ADENIJI examine the 2014 prophecies made by some Nigerian clergymen which did not come to pass At the twilight and dawn of every year, it has become customary for Nigerian clerics to reel out prophesies on what to expect in the New Year. While few of these predictions manifest, many of them fail to see the light of the day. Predictions are, however, not limited to Christian clerics. Members of other faiths and beliefs are known to have made predictions not only in Nigeria but all over the world. Notable in Nigeria in the last two decades of the last century were Prof. Godspower Oyewole, a metaphysician, and Prof. Sam Akpabot. While Oyewole gazed into his crystal ball to give earth-shaking predictions on a wide array of subjects including politics, economy and environment, Akpabot limited himself to sports. He was called the Oracle of Nigerian sports. The two gentlemen are now deceased. Like in the past years, some of the prophecies made in 2014 by some Nigerian seers did not come to pass, causing many Nigerians to take some of these prophesies with a pinch of salt. Aregbesola will be abducted — Olabayo The founder of the Evangelical Church of Yahweh, Theophilus Olabayo, predicted late 2013 that Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola risked being kidnapped in the New Year of 2014. Olabayo, who prophesied in his 2014 Book of Predictions that a South-West governor would be kidnapped, told a national newspaper (not THE PUNCH) during an interview to expatiate on the predictions that the governor could also be killed. He said, “Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun State has to be watchful so that they will not kidnap and kill him in the New Year. He has to be very careful so that he can survive the year.” However, the governor was not killed in the year and no attempt to kidnap him was recorded. 2014, Nigeria’s year of economic boom — Olusegun For Akiode Olusegun who is the General Overseer of the Ogun State-based Divine Ministries International, 2014 would be a year of economic surplus for Nigeria. He had specifically noted among other predictions that “2014 is a year of economic growth for Nigeria.’’ It was number 24 of the 33 predictions made by the pastor for the year. Last year was, however, everything but financially buoyant for Nigeria. The decline in the price of crude oil affected the government to the extent that the Minister of Finance and the Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, outlined government’s austerity measures aimed at cushioning the impact of the oil slump on the economy. Olusegun further said in number 30 of the prediction outline that, “Some notable people will commit suicide by drinking poison to escape hammer from government.’’ Rather than this, Nigerians only witnessed a higher level of impunity from individuals in government circles. Presidential ticket will split APC — Suleiman Apostle Johnson Suleiman, who is the founder and Senior Pastor of Omega Fire Ministries Worldwide, was also among the clerics who predicted major occurrences in 2014. He had said the contest for the presidential ticket to select the individual who would be the standard-bearer of the All Progressives Congress for next month’s election would split the party. However, the opposition political party managed the primary election so well that the eventual winner and former Head of State, Muhammadu Buhari, was congratulated by fellow opponents. Buhari contested the primary election against Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, former Vice-President, Atiku Abubakar, Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha and the Publisher, Leadership Newspapers, Sam Nda- Isaiah. Suleiman also said, “I saw a colonel in the military trying to stage a coup but he will fail.’’ Such a development did not happen in 2014. Another prophecy of his that, “I see CBN printing high denomination naira notes this year,’’ also never materialised in 2014. Chibok girls will return unhurt — T.B Joshua Popular Pastor Temitope Joshua, the General Overseer of the Synagogue Church of All Nations with headquarters in Lagos is one cleric who regales his followers with predictions which they claim come to pass. In a two-minute, 55 seconds video clip on tbjoshuawatch , TB Joshua, as he is popularly called, said, “Unless I’m not called by God, I place my career and calling on the line that these 200 schoolchildren and girls that were kidnapped have to be released immediately, unharmed and unhurt.” The video quoted Joshua as saying this on May 3, 2014. More than seven months after, the girls have yet to be released. The few who reportedly escaped had told the world of the sufferings and assaults they underwent in the hands of Boko Haram insurgents. ‘Missing Malaysian plane ‘ll be found’ Joshua was also said to have declared to his congregation on March 15, 2014 that the missing Malaysian Airlines Flight MH370 would be found. In the same video clip, with “SCOAN Live Prophetic Service” on its scroll bar, Joshua said, “There is a big controversy going on in the world about the missing Malaysian plane. They don’t know where the plane is. I’m the only minister, if not only me, that God used to speak about this issue. But the whole thing is coming to an end. The whole thing has come to an end, in the sense that they would discover the plane, they would discover the particles, everything would end any moment from now. So, this coming week, we are not going to be talking about it again, rather the families concerned would know their fate.” The Malaysian plane is yet to be found. ‘Write off Ebola Virus Disease’ In another video clip reportedly recorded in August 2014, the synagogue preacher declared that Ebola would be a ‘write-off’. He said, “People of Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea are released. The whole thing is (a) write-off. The life we have been living before now, we are back to that (sic).” While Nigeria has since been declared Ebola- free, the dreaded disease has killed over 8,000 people and infected over 20,000 mainly in Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. And it is still raging. ‘There will be terror attack in UK’ According to tbjoshuawatch , “On August 29, 2014, the UK’s Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre changed the UK threat level from international terrorism from substantial to severe. Two days later, Joshua predicted a terror attack in the UK sometime between the middle and end of September.” No terror attack was launched on the UK in the said year. Nigeria will do well in Brazil — Olubode Prophet Michael Olubode of the Celestial Church of Christ is another seer who reels out predictions to Nigerians at the twilight of every year, giving them a glimpse into the coming year. Writing on his website, Olubode said, “Nigeria will perform exceedingly well in this year’s World Cup but the Super Eagles will not win the cup. This is how the breakdown of how the game will look like: The Iranian team will either draw with Nigeria or place the Super Eagles in a qualifying state on the game to be played on June 16, 2014. Then, Nigeria will record impressive victory against Bosnia and Herzegovina on June 21 and another victory against the Argentina team on June 25.” The 2014 World Cup outing has been the worst for Nigeria. Nigeria crashed out after losing 0-2 to France in the second round. Although they played a goalless draw with Iran and won only one match, a 1-0 win against Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Eagles lost 3-2 to Argentina in the group stages. ‘Nigerian will win world class beauty peagent’ Olubode also said, “It has been revealed to me that in the latest news of BBC and CNN, Nigeria will once again be announced as the winner of one of the world class beauty contests this year. I advise stakeholders and lovers of Nigeria to pray well that this great expectation will come to pass. Many nations will envy and respect Nigeria for this.” This did not happen. ‘Buhari, Atiku will be abducted’ “I see Atiku Abubakar, the former Vice- President under Obasanjo, taken captive with the unfortunate politicians to suffer and possibly die over the coming crisis in the country. He will, however, be saved miraculously from the pangs of death and torture. The crisis will not spare the ex-head of State, Muhammadu Buhari. He will be taken with some Nigerian politicians this year at his residence while dinning and winning and enjoying himself with his guests,” Olubode also said. This also did not come to pass. Neither Abubakar nor Buhari was attacked or kidnapped. Similarly, Olubode said, a country that is least expected will win the World Cup. This too did not come to pass as Germany who had earlier won the tournament three times lifted the coveted trophy for the fourth time in Brazil. US will overrun Syria — Ayodele Founder of INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, Oke-Afa, Isolo, Lagos, Primate Babatunde Elijah Ayodele is also renowned for his prophecies. He said about 2014: “President Jonathan needs to be prayerful as there are plans by the international community to embarrass his government. America will take over Syria no matter what. The President of Syria may be killed if he is not careful, as many nations would rise against him. The Emir of Qatar will be troubled by reforms.” Syria is still in the throes of a bloody civil war, while some parts of it have been overrun by the terrorist group, ISIS. The US has yet to take over the country. Also, the President of Syria is very much alive, while Qatar has remained trouble-free. Akpabio will lose office — Ituen Founder and Spiritual Leader of CDM-Christ Deliverance Ministries Inc. Lagos, Prophet Ekong Ituen prophesied that Akwa Ibom State would have a change of government in the outgone year. He said, “Akwa Ibom State will soon have a change of government through the court of law as earlier predicted. I am urging the governor to put his office and documents in order in preparation for a new government. I advise the good people of my state to keep their faith alive and watch out God in action. It may take a little but I am confident because it is obvious in the spirit that your governor will not complete his tenure in office. Governor Godswill Akpabio should put his office and documents in order in preparation for a new governor.” This was never so. Up till now Akpabio still holds sway as the governor of the state. Mr. Bola Ilori, a public commentator, told SUNDAY PUNCH that some clergy men often speak in parables. He said, “There are some men of God who instead of being blunt couch their predictions in parables hence they are neither here nor there. Some people have, however, labelled these people as being smart in their predictions. “One which came to mind is the one given by Oyewole before the 1983 general elections. He was asked who would become Nigeria’s next president. He told his interviewers that the name of the winner is in the Old Testament of the Holy Bible. The supporters of Chief Obafemi Awolowo were quick to jump to conclusion that it was Awolowo, as his Christian name was Jeremiah. When the results were released, Shehu Shagari won. When accused of making a wrong prediction, Oyewole disagreed. He told them that the name Shamgar was in the Bible stating the book, chapter and verse.” Ayodele, also explained that misconceptions occurred because of people’s poor knowledge about prophesy. He said, “Nigerians don’t understand when a man of God speaks. We should not blame many men of God who said things in the past that did not come to pass. Everything is in the hands of God. He is the one who has the final say about everything that happens.” Similarly, Olubode, while responding to one of the persons who faulted some of his prophecies posted online that, “I just want you to know that I am not a prophet appointed to compete for a medal. I am not also expected to deliver accurate prophecy all the time, but all these imperfection has (sic) not also disqualified me from being a prophet of God. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears. Many are of the view that a prophet must be perfect in his vision all the time, this is not so.” Speaking on the issue, Director of Studies, United Bible University, Lagos, Prof. Kunle Macaulay, described clergymen making predictions as uninformed. He added that the era of prophecy had long gone. He said, “Our people do not know that the ministry of prophets has ended. We are now in the ministry of the Holy Spirit. The beginning of prophecy was when the elders of Israel demanded for a king to judge them (1 Samuel . Those who still prophesy do not have therequired spiritual knowledge. The prophecies they are making will not come to pass once they are not from God.’’ Macaulay, who likened predictions to guesswork and psychology, noted that whatever did not emanate from God would not come to pass. “The work of God is progressive and as far as I am concerned, one will know when a prophecy is not from God,” he added. Amaechi, democracy watch dog By: Bethel Nyimabari 2015-01-16 14:35 If the President is good, only a fraudulent Governor will, like a distorted mirror present him as bad. If the image of the present president is bad as reflected by indefatigable Governor, Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi, the Federal Government and its PDP members should see beyond their noses and do the needful instead of blame game because Rt. Hon. CRA is their mirror or watch dog. They can also search their consciences and ask themselves in all honesty the contributions they have made to correct the smeared image. Should the truth be told, a sane woman who finds out from the mirror that she is ugly doesn't break the mirror or curses the mirror for her ugliness rather she simply and painstakingly seeks and applies the best cosmetic (manicure and pedicure) available and affordable to improve her ugly appearance. If the woman prefers the doubtful expediency of breaking the mirror which reveals her ugly features, she will soon find out to her chagrin that the ugliness remains exposed to the out side world with an additional knowledge that the woman is not only ugly but insane. There is only one sensible option open to the woman, stop apportioning blame on the mirror that reveals your real stature but do the needful. |
Hello Mr. President, How Market? By Gbenro Olajuyigbe Ambassadors of corruption are parading themselves as "Transformation Ambassadors", dancing ‘Skeleu’ with their ‘Dagon’ who has forgotten, as in Chinua Achebe’s words, that his palm kernel was cracked by sheer benevolence.’ Biting the fingers that fed him, forgetting that those who bite feeding fingers often end up licking the boots that will kick them. BY GBENRO OLAJUYIGBE JAN 10, 2015 65 34 58 ‘A n age is called Dark, not because light fails to shine but because people refuse to see it.’- James A. Michener Anywhere, whether on the main streets or on the cyber streets you turn to in Nigeria today there is one loud but shameless noise of celebration in the air. People are rejoicing! Celebrating; naked and unashamed. Virtues have died. Values are already in the grave. Come on, let’s celebrate! It’s their Funeral! Yes, funeral of values and virtues. That is the reason for the celebration. "No thought, no sense, no break! Joro-jara-joro" as Fela has sung. 2015 General Election - Free and Fair A thorough definition of the Dark Age is catching fire. It is a time when people rejoice in falsehood, iniquity, heresy and evil and go ahead to honour those who package, promote and market them! The gross darkness is here! A time when ‘Papa’ Deceive ‘Pickin’ and ‘Pickin Deceive ‘Papa’ has arisen. For the reason of what to eat, some women, men, young and old have become lovers of lie, apostles of falsehood and retarders of virtues. This type of happenstance was what provoked Prophet Jeremiah in the Bible to write about once upon a time in the beautiful city of Jerusalem in The Book of Lamentation. A city that then laid barren and reduced to rubble by Babylonian hordes that invaded it. It was a tear-stained image of a city that became the shadow of its old self. Nigeria is fast becoming the ‘old testament version’ of that Jerusalem, a city once loved by God, but battered down by its own rulers. A city whose rulers are products of whoredom and whose large number of her people are given to reprobate mind. A nation where falsehood has become the foundation for policy details; and profanity, the guidance of practice, has slender chance of recovery from the mire into which it has sunk. That slender chance is what the February 2015 Election is about. Slender chance of rescuing the country from those that are irredeemably corrupt. They met the pump price of petrol at 65 naira and they are leaving it at 97 naira. They met the exchange rate of the naira at one dollar-147 naira, and they are leaving it at one dollar-197 naira. Interest Rate was 14% when they came in; today it stands at 21%. The Gini coefficient keeps on escalating, revealing the exponentially populating of the "parish of the poor"; widening the gap between the rich and the poor and crippling the potential for peace. These are the insignia of their transformation mantra; turning gold to ashes and making simple sand grain out of un-cut raw diamonds. In their time, men and women are even becoming robots, in thoughts and in placing truth in its rings. They have turned to disgusting abusers of compatriots with divergent views, cursers of the righteous and molesters of anyone with a slight air of integrity. Ambassadors of corruption are parading themselves as "Transformation Ambassadors", dancing ‘Skeleu’ with their ‘Dagon’ who has forgotten, as in Chinua Achebe’s words, that his palm kernel was cracked by sheer benevolence.’ Biting the fingers that fed him, forgetting that those who bite feeding fingers often end up licking the boots that will kick them. What manner of a presidential candidate would appoint an indecorous light-fingered hate monger like Fani Kayode as his Campaign Spokesperson? A man whose corruption charges were traded for partisan loyalty to a president who is expected to be Chief Champion of Anti-Corruption. The man who recently celebrated his sexual prowess as veritable tool he used to conquer the widow of the prime Igbo Chief. The man who has on several occasions perfidiously projected the hegemony of his Yoruba tribe over the Igbos, just as he is doing currently with the Hausa/Fulani in a nation desperately craving for unity. The man that has indiscretionally called for Oduduwa Republic to the provocation of others. A perverse and perverted mind with history graft and betrayal; and who has ordained himself as ‘preacher of hate’, reading his own greed into the creed of God by adulterating the words of God. Deceiver of brethren whose belly is his god. Little wonder the former President Obasanjo said "I know Femi Fani Kayode, give him food to chop, he will sing and dance for you." What manner of a president would be this consumed by personal ambition to the extent of no longer recognizing what bitter division is all about? How can a president be persistently holding his political party’s (PDP) meeting in the State House and did not see that as an initiation of division? How can a president of a country, who claims to be a Christian be gallivanting from one church to the other like those that Jesus called Pharisees, making political statements without giving a damn to the sensibility of others, more so that a chapel has been built in the State House to make his religious belief a private affair; and yet thinks he is not dividing the country along religious lines? They go from church to church, from Jerusalem to Galilee, yet they do not stop stealing government money! They love God with their mouths but their heart is far from God. Hippocrates! How can a president of a country yearning for national integration allow a group of rag tag supporters like TAN to go to the extent of dividing Nigeria football supporters club by inscribing ‘TAN, Supporters of Goodluck’ on the T-Shirt worn by supporters of a national football team during the Africa Cup Qualifying Match? Indeed, I agree that such a president needs a parent. Thank God he has found one among his type. His newly adopted father is Babangida. Babangida has endorsed him. However, Babangida has also made it clear that his government was run by angels given the scale of corruption which prevails in Nigeria of today. I do not know why people are frowning at Babangida’s endorsement of Jonathan. The exchange between the two men-united by expertise in science and art of corruption-is mutually beneficial. Through words, Babangida has endorsed Jonathan. Through acts, Jonathan has canonised Babangida. Combining the two, it can be said that what Babangida can do, Jonathan can do even better. Nevertheless, God is fighting back already, the people’s blind eyes are opening, the Dark Ages have almost passed out of our land. This market will soon be over; but before then, and as TAN would say, "Keep on doing it Mr President." The dealers with you are more than the minders who tell you the truth! Hello, Mr. President, how market! Gbenro Olajuyigbe is an Abuja-based human security expert and a human rights activist. Email: gbenroolajuyigbe@yahoo.com Interested in |
Fall of Jonathan’s men: What implication for his re- election? on january 10, 2015 at 4:00 am in politics Facebook Share Twitter Share BY HENRY UMORU, ASST POLITICAL EDITOR AHEAD of next month’s general elections, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP conducted its primaries last year to field candidates for the election based on the guidelines and timetable provided by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC. The PDP primaries may have come and gone, but their memories will linger for a very a long time especially against the backdrop of the performance of Jonathan’s men who resigned to contest. Many of them, at the end of the day, came out wounded, some humiliated, defeated while some won with the support of some powerful connection and influence. One very interesting aspect of the primaries was the mass resignation of Ministers, Special Advisers and Special Assistants, those that could be described as the President’s men who left the cabinet to contest for the governorship position in their respective states. Following the tendering of letters of resignation, the Ministers decided to test their popularity in their various states, by contesting the governorship primaries on the platform of PDP. Many overrated themselves and some possibly had the notion that their states belonged to them. There were those who felt that the name of President Jonathan rang enough bell to earn them tickets. They believed in the powers of the Presidency to do and undo. They relied on President Jonathan. Having served the President well, it became a seeming statutory right to emerge governors in their states. If a minister in a President’s cabinet resigned to contest for a higher political office, the conclusion was that such ambition must naturally enjoy the President’s support and approval, after all they were President’s men. They enjoyed the blaring of siren each time they visited their States and had become not only special but also high class people in their states. Again, as top government officials money was not going to be the problem. Labaran Maku resigned from his position as Minister of Information for the Nasarawa Governorship race; Emeka Wogu resigned from the Labour and Productivity Ministry for the Abia race; Musiliu Obanikoro resigned as Minister of State, Defence to contest for the Lagos State governorship ticket; Nyesom Wike left his office as Minister of State, Education for the Rivers State governorship race; Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu resigned as Minister of Health for the Ebonyi race; Dr. Samuel Ortom resigned as Minister of State, Trade and Investment for the Benue State governorship race; Darius Ishaku resigned as Minister of State, Niger Delta to contest the Taraba State Governorship position and Elder Godsday Orubebe resigned to contest for the Delta State governorship ticket. Bala Muhammad, Labaran Maku, Godsday Orubebe and Stella Oduah Bala Muhammad, Labaran Maku, Godsday Orubebe and Stella Oduah Besides the Ministers who resigned, there were also Special Advisers, Special Assistants, heads of parastatals like the Federal Character Commission, FCC, Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund, NSITF, among others. As aspirants commenced campaigns ahead of the primaries and because of the strength of the office of the president, many aspirants dropped his name as they went along in their respective states, telling those who cared to listen that they enjoyed the support of President Goodluck Jonathan. The President’s men thought they had all what was required to navigate the murky waters of Nigerian politics, having worked at the federal level, with the President and attending Federal Executive Council meetings. They represented President Jonathan through their ministries. The Ministers had also concluded that the mere mention of the President’s name or the mere thought that they worked with the leader of the party, would be enough to frighten and scare away other contestants. At worse, even if they lost, the President may influence the outcome in their favour, after all, they all sought his approval to quit the cabinet in pursuit of more juicy political package. They either got it wrong or were wronged by the system they had served doggedly. Yes, some suffered protest votes and what irked those who resented them was their association with the Presidency and the perceived arrogance even if there was non. And the man they expected to help them looked the other way, especially in keeping with democratic principles. The ministers had possibly dreamt of the past where a sitting president would impose candidates on the people in various states without allowing such persons test how popular they were. But as it turned out, President Jonathan appeared too busy to put a word cross to the handlers of the primaries in various states or force other contenders to drop their dreams. But there alleged cases where his kinsmen ensured the emergence of the President’s favoured candidates. However, they remain allegations even as eyebrows are being raised on Rivers, Taraba and one or two other states. The leadership of the party was accused of having taken side with some like in Akwa Ibom following its quick endorsement of Governor Godswill Akpabio’s zoning arrangement, that of Adamawa, among others. In Delta, the President’s kinsmen had their candidate. But what picture does the President’s non interference in many other cases where his men failed paint? Is it a case of being a true democrat, leader and father to all? During campaigns, former Minister of Information, Mr Labaran Maku who was so optimistic of getting the PDP ticket for the Nasarawa governorship race even boasted after he appeared before the PDP governorship screening committee at the Legacy House, Abuja that his DNA was PDP. Said he: “I believe in the party, I believe that people should be in the party as a matter of ideology and principles. “Political parties are not just platforms for elections, they are philosophical foundations for the construction of our own democratic infrastructure. “As for me even if you test my DNA, it is PDP. I’ am saying so because recently some of my opponents who are so afraid of me in Nasarawa State, who are scared of my popularity in the party, who are scared of my grassroots followership made my posters under APC, they even designed some billboards under APC and claimed that I have left PDP. “The reason was because when we were rebuilding the party they left to other parties, when they came back the party was solid and we were everywhere. “I’ am very confident because it has been years of hard work, years of loyalty to the party, since 1999. I have served this party in different capacities. I was commissioner of information, deputy governor. I contested for the seat in 2007. Somehow, I did not leave the party like some others who migrated to other parties looking for platforms to contest. “I am bringing an experience beginning from student unionism to journalism, a development agent before going into politics where I served as a commissioner, deputy governor and a minister. If I go there I will be the unifying force, I will bring development to my people using my wealth of experience that I have gathered throughout these years of service to the nation. So I am ready to change my state.” After much political intrigues, manoeuvring, backstabbing, permutations, the President’s men lost out in the race of picking the governorship ticket of their states. Even Maku whose performance as minister of information was a shining light for the Presidency failed to enjoy the support of the same Presidency even if you may not attribute his failure to that. Except for former Minister of State, Education and former Minister of State, Niger Delta, Nyesom Wike and Darius Ishyaku who emerged respectively as Rivers and Taraba Candidates, other ministers like Labaran Maku; Emeka Wogu, Musiliu Obanikoro; Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu; Samuel Ortom; Prof. Sylvester Monye, among others failed to get tickets. At the end of the PDP gubernatorial primaries, the following persons emerged. Akwa – Ibom – Udom Emmanuel; Lagos – Jimi Agbaje; Adamawa – Nuhu Ribadu; Enugu – Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi; Jigawa – Aminu Ringim; Oyo – Teslim Folarin; Cross River – Benedict Ayade; Kaduna – Muktar Yero; Gombe – Ibrahim Dankwambo; Rivers – Nyesom Wike; Delta – Ifeanyi Okowa; Abia – Okezie Ikpeazu; Nasarawa – Yusuf Agabi; Plateau – Gyang Pwajok; Niger – Umar Nasko; Benue – Terhemen Terzoor; Imo – Emeka Ihedioha; and Ebonyi – Dave Umahi. Others were Auwal Jatau for Bauchi; Senator Abdallah Wali for Sokoto State; Salihu Sagir Takai for Kano; Adamu Maina Waziri for Yobe; Gambo Lawan for Borno; Engr. Musa Nashuni for Katsina; Darius Ishaku for Taraba State, Alhaji Mahmud Aliyu Shinkafi who was defeated during the 2011 election became the candidate of the party for Zamfara State, among others. Wike and Ishaku got theirs because of the support from first lady Patience Jonathan and former Minister of Defence, General Theophilus Danjuma respectively. Aside the governorship race, some of Jonathan’s men who were very loyal and still loyal like governor Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta State who had wanted to come to the Senate to represent Delta South; Sullivan Chime of Enugu; Martins Elechi of Ebonyi, all with senatorial ambitions lost out. Uduaghan did not contest as he withdrew few days to the election allegedly on the advice of Mr. President who wanted his fellow Ijaw man James Manager to continue after 16 years as senator. The emergence of Ifeanyi Okowo also had the Ijaw touch although huge credit should go to Uduaghan for providing a level playing field. Ijaw man is Okowa’s running mate and PDP appears to be united in Delta although some candidates believed to be loyal to Uduaghan are being substituted by those they defeated in the primaries. Will they defect too? Will APC gain from this? That’s for DeltaJust as Senate Majority Leader, Senator Victor Ndoma- Egba; Chairman, Senate Committee on Rules and Business, Senator Solomon Ita Enang, Chairman, Senate Committee on Women Affairs, Senator Helen Esuene, Senator Heineken Lokpobiri representing Bayelsa West, among others lost out. Manager is tipped to replace Victor Ndoma-Egba as Majority Leader in the Senate. Presidential power, you may say but he and few others who enjoyed such support also played their game well. And why did others fail? Was it an indication that the Ministers were merely Abuja politicians, even though Ortom and Maku have dumped the PDP for the All Progressives Congress, APC and the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA respectively as their governorship candidates for next month’s election? Maku has succeeded in flushing out his PDP DNA now and having that of APGA. May be after the election, he would then have a combination of both. Why the abysmal performance of Jonathan’s men at the primaries? Could it be an indication that he left them to be on their own or was it that he worked against them and what with those who suffered protest votes as associates of the President? These were those who were believed to parade their association with the President as their only quality and suffered protest votes. Wike in Rivers would have suffered same but for the doggedness of his team coupled with the intimidating support of Patience Jonathan who was allegedly quoted as vowing that Wike would emerge the next governor of Rivers State. So what happened to the other President’s men? What does their failure portend to the party in next month’s election? Would it have an implication on President Jonathan’s re- election bid? Will those who lost out still remain committed to the victory of the president? Saturday Vanguard sought to know from PDP leaders, Stakeholders on the implication of Jonathan’s men losing at the primaries as the party begins campaigns ahead of next month’s general elections and here are their comments. PDP National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh noted that their failure to get the tickets will not affect the President’s re- election bid. He said that some of them like Obanikoro are powerful in their states which explained why the PDP would want them to remain. Also in his contribution, former Edo State governor, Professor Oserheimen Osunbor said, ” This is a direct consequence of the internal contradictions and manipulations which characterised the primaries generally. I believe that those who lost out know that President Jonathan was not responsible for what happened to them and have no reason to get back at him by working against his reelection.” In his remarks, former Senate Chief Whip, Senator Rowland Owie, said, “No implications at all for Jonathan’s re-election. The problem with most appointees to the Executive arms at the federal and state levels,is that as soon as they assume duties, they lose touch at the grassroots, to fulfill the destructive parable of ” A FRIEND IN GOVERNMENT, IS A FRIEND LOST” “They no longer get in touch with the local leaders and those who worked for the party to win the elections on which basis they got the appointments. Such appointees certainly can’t win party primaries. However there are good ones who maintain good relationship with their constituents and when such seek elective positions, they will surely get through. In addition the failure of such Aides of the President at various party primaries, go to show that Mr. President does not interfere with party primaries.” Also reacting, the Political Adviser to Vice President Namadi Sambo, Mallam Abba Dabo who noted that it will not have any negative effect on the party because they did not lose to other parties, said that what happened was a true democratic process, an indication that the President never wanted to interfere in the election process as against the wishes of the people, adding, “Contest in PDP is very keen, people think that as a minister, once you come out, the deal is sealed, it is not true, the party is democratic, everyone can win, we had an array of contestants. In other smaller parties, once you come out to contest, you become a colossus, it is not the same in PDP. PDP allowed both the Ministers and non ministers to come out and contest.” In his contribution, former Minister of Transport and member, PDP Board of Trustees, BoT, Chief Ebenezer Babatope said, “Not at all, it will not have any effect on President Goodluck Jonathan’s re- election bid. What happened to them was that he did not lift his hand to influence the process, he did not influence the decision of the electorate; it is a plus for the president, what happened boosted the image of Jonathan as did not interfere in the choice of the people.” But there are party faithful who are not comfortable that many of those who remained loyal to the President and were known to have played tremendous roles in serving the party were schemed out or outplayed in the primaries. “You can’t ignore the influence of some people who will not likely to be committed to the Presidential election any more,” one PDP party faithful said. For the fear of being tagged anti party he preferred anonymity. Same with a party chieftain who spoke from Enugu. Said he: “There’s no way this crash by President’s loyalists will not reflect in the election results. It will not make Jonathan lose but he will surely lose some votes.” Many in the opposition parties feel that the crash of President’s men will be to their advantage. Even a sitting governor has moved his loyalists to another party in Ebonyi State. Also contributing, former Member, House of Representatives, and Executive Secretary, Anti- Corruption Network, Otunba Dino Melaye said, “Nine Ministers have resigned from Jonathan’s cabinet to contest political offices primaries. (Nyesom) Wike (Rivers PDP governorship candidate) bulldozed to win. Seven Ministers lost their primaries. That is the pronouncement of the disenchantment of Nigerians against the government of Jonathan. The PDP is a Trojan Horse, Nigeria is in the Intensive Care Unit, Nigeria is in the Hospital. The time for our rejuvenation is now. General Muhammadu Buhari is the only answer, antidote and remedy to corruption.” In his contribution, a member of the 2014 National Conference and Executive Director, Human Rights Monitor, Barrister Festus Okoye said, “Different considerations other than the political travails of some of the Ministers and Special Advisers will determine the outcome of the 2015 elections. Some of the Ministers had no concrete base in their states and relied on Federal might. Unfortunately for some of them domestic realities played a major role in their defeat. Barring electoral fraud and Violence , Religion, ethnicity, money, inc**bency and performance will determine the outcome of the 2015 elections.” In his contribution, former governor of Anambra State, Chief Chukwuemeka Ezeife who described the primaries conducted as imposition by those he described as cabal in the system, stressed merit, success and ability were thrown out, just as he said that the Ministers went to conduct the primaries and the people told them how they a****s them, adding that the defeat of the Ministers during the primaries would not have any connection with the President’s re- election. He said, ” we are not doing democracy, I will talk on this after the election. I have always spoken in support of a two party system. A cabal is bringing out people instead of the people doing that. Only direct primary election is the way forward. What we have now is imposition by a cabal and not democracy. APC does not do direct primary, PDP does not do direct primary, you must select candidates on the opinion of the people and not on persons. “In Ebonyi, the Minister of Health who fought Ebola with international recognition and who ought to have won the primaries was not given, merit does not count, success does not count, ability does not count, only who supports you. “ « Aregbesola dismisses FG claims on oil theft, dwindling allocations Comments |
What Buhari never said By: Peregrino Brimah 2015-01-09 19:31 Let us set the records straight. As Nigerians prepare to vote for progress and change in the upcoming Presidential elections, it is pertinent certain popular statements attributed to chief opposition candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari are set straight for God and man. Firstly, did General Buhari ever say he or they will make Nigeria ungovernable? The answer to this is a resounding, no! In an earlier write-up we carefully researched this inflammatory statement and discovered that it was made by a then PDP politician, Lawal Kaita from Kaduna. This is why the late NSA, Andrew Owoye Azazi said that it was internal PDP politics and their squabbles on zoning/rotation of the Presidency that led to the “sudden sophistication of Boko Haram.” It was within PDP that the discussion of rotation of the presidency came up, and Lawal Kaita was perturbed with Jonathan’s decision to continue late Umaru Yar’Adua’s term in violation of the parties zoning policy. This was when Jonathan promised to only contest/ occupy the top spot one additional term (in addition to his completing Yar’Adua’s term) and also when some northern PDP stalwarts and party founders threatened to make Nigeria ungovernable. There was no such confusion in Buhari’s CPC and thus no need and reason for such inflammatory pronouncements from his quarters. When Reuben Abati spun this statement upon the person of Buhari, the General took him to court for libel and the court judgment as awarded in Buhari’s favor. Buhari dragged Abati and The Guardian to court via suit no. ID/837/2011 and demanded N1billion damages. President Goodluck Jonathan then begged Buhari to settle out-of-court . See in DailyPost of January 13th, 2013: http:// dailypost.ng/2013/01/13/presidency-begs- buhari-to-settle-slander-case-out-of-court /. The empathetic General agreed and Reuben Abati and the Guardian where the libelous article was published were made to publish an unreserved retraction of the slander against Buhari which they did in the Guardian of July 11, 2013. This is why Reuben Abati is called Nigeria’s evil genius. Our full article on this with all references can be read here on ENDS.ng: http://ends.ng/fact-it-was-pdp- that-promised-to-make-nigeria-ungovernable- in-2011-buhari-never-did/ Did General Buhari promise election riots in 2011? The answer to this is again, no! General Buhari never prescribed riots or made any threat related to such in regards to the 2011 elections. He took the case of election rigging to court and never made a single statement containing threats in relation to it. The Lemu panel investigation of the post- election riots cleared the General of any guilt of complicity. The General released an exemplary press statement on the court’s ruling which can be read on SaharaReporters of December 28, 2011: http:// saharareporters.com/2011/12/28/statement- general-muhammadu-buhari-regarding- verdict-supreme-court-jonathans-election Buhari did however state that if 2015 was a repeat of the rigging on 2011, there will be a fierce fight He used the kare jini biri jinni Hausa proverb, which roughly cuts as ‘the dog and baboon will be soaked in the same blood,’ but is an idiom which means, there will be a real battle- could be legal; could be protests or any other battle, as this is a mere proverbial statement. Of course those who wished to paint this statement with the ‘blood’ contained in it did so eagerly as we see they have done in many other of his statements and statements attributed to him. Read more on the idiom here, by Dr. Aliyu Tilde on PremiumTimes: http:// www.premiumtimesng.com/opinion/5195- buhari_vs_pdp_the_dog_and_the_baboon.html The third hallmark statement attributed to the General: did Buhari ever say that a war on Boko Haram was a war against the north? The answer to this statement as with the rest is a resounding, no! Why are all these false statements attributed to Buhari? Well, for one reason the General is rather not that outspoken and is a man of extreme patience and tolerance who evidently only used legal means to redress the libel and false accusations against him planed and sponsored by the Presidency. So what did General Buhari say in 2013? He said, the institution of a State of Emergency in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states was a declaration of war on the north of Nigeria. He did not say that fighting Boko Haram was a declaration of war against the north; no, after all he fought and destroyed not only Maitatsine terrorists, but also the Habre fanatical forces of Chad. He clearly understands the need of a real war against terror; he however saw that Nigeria’s President and the then army Chief, General Azubuike Ihejirika who has been labeled a Boko Haram sponsor by my organization, ENDS and Boko Haram negotiator, Stephen Davis, were not fighting any real war against the terrorists but were silently facilitating the continued reign of terror and seeking all means to destroy the northeast as it is today. Also read: Dear Buhari! When Buhari wiped out Maitatsine in Adamawa state, he did not need to declare any phony state of emergency. He did not declare one either when he expelled the Habre Chadian forces from the 19 Nigerian occupied Islands in the northeast. Today the entire Nigeria saw the wisdom of elder statesman Buhari’s position against the declaration of the state of emergency and the senate thereby refused to extend the more harmful than good emergency rule that failed to yield meaningful results since it was instituted in May of 2013. I as a proponent of the State of Emergency in 2013 and one of those who canvassed and pushed for it did not quite agree with the General at the time but now I understand his reservations and how this declaration and all others by the President including his recent cessation of fire have all been declarations of war against the Nigerian people, particularly those being decimated and displaced in the northeast by French foreign forces being organized and directed from Idris Deby’s Chad. In conclusion, the Jonathan government who without any investigation exonerated MEND who had claimed responsibility for the October 1st 2010 Abuja bomb attack, since then decided to pick on General Muhammadu Buhari, his most formidable perceived opponent and in so doing allowed and as some say, actually supported Boko Haram’s continued existence and carnage while his evil genius press and media men and the Femi twins continued to spew slander upon slander and libel upon libel against the person of Buhari, spinning his every proverb out of context, publishing twisted versions of his every word and even reflecting other people’s statements upon him. Proverbs 19:9 says… who breathes out lies will perish. Indeed the liars shall perish. For “Their throat is an open grave; they use their tongues to deceive.” “The venom of asps is under their lips.” Romans 3:13 ESV. - MyNews24 |
Boko Haram rapes and kills By: Peregrino Brimah 2015-01-09 09:38 “Fear of collateral damage” was the – I must say — rather lame and exhaustively repeated excuse Brigadier General Olajide Laleye, Director, Army Public Relations tried to feed journalists in a press conference on the spate of Boko Haram deadly terror and occupation of most of Borno and the northeast, held in Abuja this Wednesday. It is the same excuse the Jonathan-led government and army gave when Boko Haram was holed up in Sambisa forest till June this year: the Alex Badeh-led army and Jonathan government claimed that the reason why the Nigerian army failed to go into Sambisa and liberate the 234 abducted Nigerian girls from Chibok was for fear of harming the girls. Under this unprecedented protection by the Nigerian government, Boko Haram in the months after the abduction, came out of their comfortable positions in Sambisa and occupied 20 out of 27 local governments in Borno massacring thousands of Nigerians and forcefully conscripting thousands of youth. It was our ENDS organization that exposed to the world the location of the terrorists camping freely under the military’s watch in Sambisa with the abducted girls. The Nigerian government and army chiefs, current and past – accused of terror, General Azubuike Ihejirika – are yet to explain why they never crushed Boko Haram in Sambisa for the 5 years prior to the abduction when the excuse of the girls being their shields was traded. [See our April 25th widely read release: National Security Update: Details Of The Sambisa Camps Holding Our 200 Abducted Daughters; link: http://ends.ng/?p=848 ] ENDS, on behalf of the Civilian-JTF in the Northeast and thousands of able and ready hunters had formally pleaded the Jonathan government give us the permission to raid Sambisa forest, liberate our abducted girls and guys, and defeat Boko Haram without fear of being killed by the Nigerian military in such engagement. The Jonathan-led government refused to respond to our formally sent letter requesting permission to go into Sambisa which the Nigerian army had proven unable or reluctant to. [Refer request sent 26th April, 2014: Request For Executive Authorization to Recruit, Mobilize, Train and Deploy Concerned Volunteers Against the Boko Haram Insurgency; link: http://ends.ng/?p=864 ] Boko Haram Occupation Is Worse Than Any Form Of Collateral Damage Today the crisis has spun out of proportion. Boko Haram according to reports from Nigerians who recently escaped from Bama when the Cameroonian army invaded the Nigerian occupied city, have described that Boko Haram is actively and freely conscripting hundreds of youth and torturing and killing all those who will not fight for them. This is worse than any form of collateral damage possible. The exterminator Boko Haram now constitutes a nuisance for neighboring Cameroon where they go for food and have invaded over 5 towns. The terrorists are sending the thousands of recruited poor youth from the occupied northeast as sacrificial soldiers on high risk escapades in search for food as they continue their French-Chad sponsored mission to displace and annihilate all life in the northeast. The longer the Nigerian army cooperates with the terrorists, granting them treasonous cessations of Nigerian army fire to allow them regroup and recoup and protecting them by failing to invade the occupied territories to liberate the people and hinder the grave violations against humanity with the terrorists killing our elderly and recruiting our youth as happens freely in occupied local governments, the more deadly a calamity Boko Haram becomes not only for Nigeria but the entire region and world. Nigeria's defense chief Alex Badeh has bragged that he liberated his Mubi from the terrorists in just 14 days from the occupation of the towns, north of Adamawa which occurred October ending. Assuming his claims of credit are true and the brave Ibn Fadlallah warriors and man hunters who the government and police insanely clamped down on, are not responsible for that liberation, why then has it been 6 years of Boko Haram operations freely in Borno that Ihejirika and himself have failed to abate as he showed was posisble within just two weeks of the terrorists invading his home state and town? These are questions Nigerians are asking Alex Badeh and President Jonathan. - MyNews24 |

OBADITAN If General Muhammadu Buhari is voted into power, come February 2015, the army general-now-turned democrat, will follow the footsteps of Charles De Gaulle of France, who was the man of the moment in the crucial hour of that nation. De Gaulle was a statesman, dominant military and political leader of France for much of the period from 1940 to 1969. Like Buhari, he was a man of integrity, who refused to accept armistice with German invaders in 1940, and thereby set up his base in London, proclaimed himself the incanation of France, and created the Free French Movement. During the war, he rallied the overseas colonies (especially Africa), organized the resistance from abroad, and struggled to gain full recognition from the British and Americans. He was a firm proponent of democracy, who later became the leader of the Provisional Government of France following its liberation in 1944. De Gaulle like Buhari, was a retired military officer; a Brigadier General, who retired in 1946, but returned in 1958 as France verged on civil war over the Algerian crisis. He was voted in as President in 1958 to 1969; the New fifth Republic of France. De Gaulle was a political stabilizer; who stabilized the turbulent political system of France, and restored the nation’s economy. He made France to dominate the European Common Market by vetoeing British entry and keeping the U.S at arms length. It is on record that Buhari overthrew a democratically elected government of Alhaji Shehu Aliyu Shagari on the 31st of December, 1983. The military intervention was welcomed by majority of Nigerians, who were already disgusted by the corrupt and ineptitude regime that had just rigged its second term election. The Buhari/ Idiagbon regime brought changes that remain a reference point till date. “War Against Indiscipline” led to orderliness in every sector of Nigeria. For the short period the regime lasted, war against corruption and criminality were successfully fought. Buhari’s D ecree N umber 4 o f 1984 and the retroactive decree that led to the summary exucution of Mr. Ojuolape and others, for alleged drug trafficking were dents on the new democrat record, but show me any of our past and present head of state and governments that does not have a but or short comings , then I will show you a virgin in a maternity ward. Every saint has a past. Paul the apostle, in the Bible, described himself as head of the sinners, who was not qualified to proclaim the gospel of Christ. Paul eventually wrote more than half of the New Testament books. De Gaulle was accused for being critical to criticism, he eventually resigned his leadership position, but his reputation as the greatest of French leaders since Napoleon remains unbeatable till date. President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan must have done his best, but his has not been good enough to salvage the nation from its multitude problems; such as shortage of power, unemployment, insecurity, economy downturn, poor health facilities. The various elections so far conducted under Jonathan have been under the jack- boot of the security agents. While other African countries such as Ghana and South Africa have made a lot of improvement, Nigerian elections have been characterized by executive intimidation. President Jonathan has continued to defend the anomalies in our electoral processes. He has equally justified the use of soldiers and other security agents as a necessary evil. But by now, our leaders ought to live beyond anti-democratic practices. Democracy is about freedom of choice as guaranteed by the Constitution. Nigerians must be allowed to determine those who govern them through the ballot. The August 9, 2014 governorship election in Osun, where about 100, 000 security agents and sniffing dogs were deployed to “capture” Osun and the insistence of the Presidency to rob the people of their choice, despite their resistance, is a dangerous signal to what Jonathan can do in the February 2015 general elections. The opposition must be at alert as we approach the campaigns and the election. It was Ni cole Machavali, who described power as sword, and that once it is worn, everything should be done to keep it. The PDP will not surrender power easily to any opposition, but with vigilant and internal cooperation among those who want a change, PDP is beatable. De Gaulle oversaw the development of French atomic weapons and promoted foreign policy independent of ‘ Anglo Saxim’ . The Buhari administration, if voted in, should be able to take us beyond clueless foreign policy, to a new era, where our voice as a nation would not only he heard, but we must be seen as a leading African nation that other countries in the continent will be willing and happy to fol low through pragmatic and dynamic foreign policy. “Our friends at the Republican covention were more than happy to talk about everything they think is wrong with America, but they didn’t have much to say about how they would make it right. They want your vote, but they don’t want you to know their plan.” This President Barack Obama’s statement is applicable to the Nigerian leaders since 1999 that have been running the nation adrift. The ruling party has been talking about how they would fixed our economy, oil price had been sold for $106 for 15 years, yet the number of jobless youths keeps being on the ascendancy, health sector is worse hit, as health workers and doctors have closed down the hospitals till today; poor funding of tertiary institutions, poor road network across the nation. The Nigerian Immigration Service recruitment tragedy is an open secret. Till date, nobody has been held responsible for it. Neither did Mr. President fulfill the promise made to relatives, who lost their loved ones over jobs that were never avaliable. The Chibok girls adoption tragedy, the late response to the incident and the politics introduced to the calamity, will forever haunt this present Federal Government, whose constitutional responsibility it is, as encapsulates in Section 14 sub-section 4 of 1999 Constitution; to ensure security and welfare of the citizens. Till date, the Boko Haram insurgency has become octopus, that has killed thousands of people and is still killing and maiming. On the accusation of religious bigotry against Buhari, we must not allow religion to destroy our nation, Buhari himself has admitted that he is not a muslim fanatic, what we should do is to accept what Sir. Ahmadu Bello told the Christians mission that “Differences in religions need not bar people from working together for the good of all.” Alhaji Bello further told the great Dr. Nnamdi Azikwe that we cannot forget our differences as suggested by the latter, rather he stated: “ No, let us understand our differences. I am a Muslim and a notherner. You are a Christian, an Easterner. By understanding our differences, we can build unity in our country.” Buhari’s first daughter got married to a Christian easterner, an evidence that debunked the insinuation of religious bigotry. .Obaditan writes from Osogb |

Nigerian Military: #BringBackOurGirls Now, They Are Dead Already! By: Peregrino Brimah 2014-07-14 11:24 The Nigerian military just released a statement in which they ‘explained’ why they have not yet – after three months – brought back our precious Chibok abducted girls. In the statement as presented in the media, the military claimed that their problem was ‘bringing back the girls alive.’ Director of Information, Defence Headquarters, Major General Chris Olukolade said, “To the best of our knowledge, they are still accessible. If we tried to force our way in, they may be killed. If we force our way there, they will kill them. This is what we want to avoid at all cost; rescue operations of that nature should not be done in a hurry. Sambisa (forest) is not impenetrable. But let me say it here: they mined almost everywhere around where they are keeping these girls.” The position of Nigeria’s security department under Chief of Defense staff, Air Marshal Alex Badeh, Security head, NSA Sambo Dasuki, Minister of defense, ex-NSA, Spy Aliyu Gusau and ultimately the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, is shameful, wicked and embarrassingly treacherous to put it mildly. The girls are dead already. Quit the BS. The girls – being raped and killed in Sambisa forest are no better than dead. Our lazy, unwilling, unable and impotent, corruption riddled and grossly sabotaged security services are a sham and disgrace. They are afraid of dying on mission to rescue the girls. This is the truth about their position; harm to the girls who are harmed already beyond human redemption, is the least of their worries. Nigerians and the observing international community are no idiots. We are not in the least fooled into believing that the preservation of life is the least of the Nigerian security department’s worries. The military should just quit already and step aside so the willing coalition of Nigerian civilian patriots demanding the right to be armed and allowed into Sambisa to do the dignified, can go ahead and rescue the girls, dead or living-dead. We call on all international organizations to initiate and enforce strict sanctions against Nigeria’s government and military personnel who have demonstrated indignant dereliction of duty to protect life and defend the nation against militants armed from the nation’s armory. According to media reports, 7 more parents of the abducted girls have recently passed. The pain and trauma to the direct victims, families and larger nation can no longer ever be meaningfully reversed. The Nigerian military continues to stand aside and allow Boko Haram unlimited ability to reign full and uninhibited terror on Nigeria, including the continued abduction of even more innocent victims, with over 90 including 60 females, being abducted again this past month. We the people vote no confidence in the Jonathan regime and the current military leadership of Nigeria. We urge all traditional leaders and international players with the fear of God at heart and the will to act and act firmly towards the preservation of human life, safety, dignity and hope, to come out and press for real and clear action against terror. In the recognition of the unwillingness and inability of the nation’s security services to perform their constitutional duties and paid obligations to the nation, we demand the Nigerian government immediately respond to the request of the people, the Civilian-JTF, Vigilante’s in the north east, traditional hunters and thousands of Nigerian willing and patriotic youth across the country, for the right and support of the government, to be armed appropriately and allowed to enter Sambisa forest to engage Boko Haram and rescue all abductees, ASAP, dead or living-as-dead. Government armed civilians are currently the resisting force in Iraq against the ISIS advance. Similarly, armed civilian patriots were key to checking a similar reign of terror in Algeria in the 90’s ‘Black decade.’ It is time for our government to act responsibly and stop aiding and promoting the genocide of its vulnerable, defenseless farming and trading, northern communities. We the people, further call on the military to pull out of the north east. It can no longer be argued that the military presence in the conflict parts presents greater safety to life than it facilitates and exacerbates insecurity and danger to the communities of northern farmers most severely affected in this pogrom. Boko Haram are armed today with weapons from Nigeria’s armory. The terrorists continue to easily sack military installations and obtain sophisticated guns, light tanks and Armored Personnel Carriers, APC’s, which they utilize with absolute impunity, to inflict maximal causalities on the indigenes of the north east. Military helicopters are even said to give cover and assist the terrorists in their operations. The recklessness and carelessness of the Nigerian military, allowing its arms and vehicles to be obtained and utilized against the unarmed people of the affected zones constitutes unthinkable crimes against humanity and malicious sabotage of the people it is its duty to protect. In this light, the Nigerian military which has continued for the four years of Boko Haram’s worst carnage, to be unable to confront the terrorists in their hideouts and to arrest them in their advances or recover stolen government military vehicles and weapons, is in effect aiding and abetting the continued reign of terror on the people of Borno state and neighboring states. Every additional day, hour, minute, even second is too late! We refuse to continue to wait. Go to Sambisa, or step down and let us go. |
The Secret of the Niger (2): The Riot and the Visitor By: Peregrino Brimah 2014-07-14 12:10 Whenever Sule woke early in the morning, he heard Daddy reciting the Quran in a most beautiful sing-song tone. Daddy had a golden voice. Was Daddy up all night? What time did daddy get up to start this recital? Sule always wondered, but no matter how early he woke before the sun was up, daddy was already there, on the mat, left shoulder propping him, eyes closed, reciting the Quran in such a melancholy, melodious tone, with pitches and falls that sounded like a naturally changing climate. Dad would open his eyes; see Sule and smile, while beckoning to him to come close; wrap his arm around him while never losing his rhythm. It was a feeling like those warm rainy nights when he could hear mom calling his name; only if mom was here. Dad had built an unshakeable fascination with religion in Sule. His stories were simply amazing. Once he told Sule that he could perform magic. Sule’s eyes were wide open. “Any Muslim can perform magic,” Dad had said. “I can move this table here.” “Move it, move it,” Sule had demanded. “No, why do so?” Dad responded. “I only use my powers when I absolutely need to. You see so many Muslims have used their powers in the past to do wonderful things, but you do not want to waste the power. Today many use their powers for very bad things.” Sule was left dreaming of this magical power. He wanted to be just like his dad, but he also dreamt of something else, something far off that he couldn’t quite recognize. “You are dreaming again!” His dad jolted him back to reality. “It’s time for makaranta!” Makaranta The thirty something boys were reciting at the tops of their voices. Makaranta was a bunch of tattered rubber mats that were moved around to catch the shade under a big tree at a corner of a large compound. Malami sat in front and all the kids formed a half circle around him, sitting on the hard, dusty, stony floor with flattened and torn paper thin mats that barely separated bottom from sand. Malam trained the students to read in Arabic; they had to learn to read the entire 6236 verses-long Quran. This part of their education took the first two to three years. Then they learned several books of ‘Fiqh’ (the understanding of the Quran and the wisdom of Muslim conduct and societal structure and jurisprudence). This part of the training took a few years and could literally last a life time. There is a ceremony as soon as you first complete reading the entire Quran in Arabic. Sule was excited; he was graduating this stage next week. Hamza was lagging behind. They both started together, but Hamza missed many weeks of school whenever he ran away from home. That could not happen to Sule, because he had the ‘best dad in the world.’ As they recited at the top of their voices, Sule picked a drone in the background. He couldn’t quite make out what it was. Later the other boys noticeably picked it up too. They started getting excited and distracted as the rumble got louder and louder. ‘Thwack!’ was the sound of Malam’s whip cracking on the ground in their midst. “Read!” he commanded. “You want to feel my whip?” Then they saw the first rioter run across the open gate; and then another and several more. It was a riot. “Jihad, Jihad,” the boys running outside were calling out. By now all the boys at makaranta were on their feet. “Go straight home!” Malam ordered. The boys scampered out of the yard. Someone said something about a Christian teacher having touched a Quran or something. They weren’t quite sure what it was about, but who really cared? Most of the boys joined the rioters. “It’s the Jihad,” Sule thought. “The world had come to an end. It’s time to fight for Allah.” Sule remembered his last riot experience – it was quite fun. They were running to the market place. Boys were setting fires. Everyone picked up a branch. Sule too picked a branch. He wasn’t quite sure what for but he did so. They were waving down cars. A car almost hit a boy as it sped-by, refusing to stop. Shops were ablaze in the central market. People were making away with market wares. And then things started getting rough. A group of men came to fight off the rioters. Someone fired a shot. Sule was not sure whether he ran or tumbled more as he scuttled his way home. Alhaji was standing at the door with another tall dark man. There was a grim look on Alhaji’s face. “Where were you, Sule?” he barked. “Did you join the riots?” Sule looked down. “Come inside now, do you want to kill your father! Haven’t I told you never to join the riots?” After some more scolding and stern warnings from his dad and the tall visitor who apparently was Sule’s uncle, Sule was sent off to wash himself and join the two for dinner. “The problem is who are we?” Sule’s uncle was saying. “What is a nation? Where is our nation? What is a man today? I work every day but barely make a living. I thank Allah for my life-- but where is the hope? Where is the pride? Where is the hope for our children? What does the future have for them-- are my children going to be Okada riders like me?” Okada riders, was the name given to motorcycle commercial transporters. “But you are making a decent living in Abia, are you not?” Alhaji asked Uncle. “I think it is better for you there than for us here.” “Here and there, there is no future for our kind. The world has frowned on us. We come from a wealthy Kano heritage, but today, we are cobblers, we are garbage men, we are water carriers. We are no more than ‘amenities’ (in the society). Many are content with this life, but I think we need to find who we are. We need to find our national value.” “You think too much,” daddy told him. “Live on the earth as though every day is your last, the noble Prophet taught us. Is that not enough for us?” “But do we not pray to have in this life as well as the next? I do not believe any people should lack opportunity. Our name and even our religion is being soiled by our attitude-- and all this violence. This is far from our great history. This should never be so. Our generation has failed to find our destiny; perhaps these younger ones will succeed and find our true place, where we could not. We need to give them the opening. Maybe they will discover the answer, the reason.” Sule remembered Uncle. He always came to talk to dad about politics and social matters till late into the night. Uncle smiled at Sule. “How are your studies?” he asked. “Fine, uncle,” Sule responded. “Why do you call us Kano people when we are Kanuri?” Sule asked. It had always been on his mind. “We are Kano,” uncle responded. “Your grand father was from Borno, but we are Kano.” He continued. Sule knew not to pry any further. “Perhaps he’ll understand these things later; he sure didn’t now. “Have you told him?” Uncle asked dad. “What?” Sule interjected eagerly. “Your uncle is taking you to Abia,” dad answered. “You are sending me away! No daddy!” Sule ran to hug his dad. “I’m sorry for joining the riots, I will never do it again, please do not send me away, Alhaji.” “I am not sending you away, my son. I will never send you away. You are all I have left. Your uncle believes you will have better opportunity in Abia. You will learn the English you always wished to learn there. You may even get an education.” Something felt tight in Sule’s chest. The tears started to swell up in his eyes. He never knew his mom and now it felt like he was losing his dad too-- and all his friends. He could see in dads resigned eyes that the decision was already made. “After you graduate next week, we will be travelling to Abia together.” His uncle finalized. “You will like it there. You will help with the work and make new friends. You are a man now.” As Sule packed the dishes to wash, it felt like the saddest day of his life. The Chosen Church and the Failed Miracle ala Lazarus The prophets of the Chosen Church promised a miracle ala Lazarus, but this miracle failed to happen in a community in Imo state. The story below is a wake-up call to all gullible Nigerians who believe everything their pastors tell them, hook, line, and sinker. The Chosen Church and the Failed Miracle ala Lazarus The book of Matthew 24:24 says: "For false Christs and false prophets will arise and will show great signs and wonders, so as to mislead, if possible, even the elect. 25"Behold, I have told you in advance". This Biblical injunction freely and clearly offers an advance warning that many Christians are yet to heed. It warns about the rise of false prophets masquerading as men of god that use God's name to swindle, deceive and hypnotize the gullible. That was exactly what happened in Umuezii, Nguru Mbaise where the Chosen Church of God prophets embarked on a failed mission to resurrect the dead. This is not the first time the Chosen Church is directly fingered in fake miracles and spiritual hocus-pocus. A young man, from Umuezii community died in Burkina Faso in November last year under mysterious circumstances. A month after, his sealed body was brought back to Nigeria and was buried the same day in his family compound in Umuezii, Nguru Mbaise, Imo State. Trouble started when prophets and seers of the Chosen Church of God prophesied that the dead-and-buried young man was still alive (six feet beneath the earth) as his soul has persistently approached them via telephone calls and other spiritual means, requesting immediate exhumation. His elder sister, who is a member of the Chosen Church, communicated this prophecy to the entire family, leading to a family resolution insisting on the "divinely ordered" exhumation. The decision to exhume the dead body did not go down well with the community as such act was considered an abomination both under the native tradition and under the prevailing Catholic norms deeply established within the community. All entreaties to the family made by the traditional ruler and parish priest of the St. Luke Catholic Church, Umuezii to refrain from such religious charade fell on deaf ears. It got to a point that the deceased family representatives openly accused the church and community leaders of killing their late brother, and preventing his "god-ordained" resurrection. The family of the deceased coming out to offer apology As a lasting solution to the impasse, the traditional ruler of the community invited the Chosen Church seers and prophets to sign an agreement of performance failing which they will be handed over to the police authorities for prosecution. The second condition was that the miracle will be performed in full public glare and in the presence of other independent witnesses. Proudly beating their chests and boasting deafeningly about their "majestic powers", the seers and prophets signed the agreement and a date was mutually agreed for the resurrection miracle. On the appointed day, a horde of prayer warriors, choristers, singers, speaking-in-tongue experts, seers, prophets and the like stormed the village as early as 6 a.m. The traditional ruler also invited the police, radio commentators, reporters and correspondents from local newspapers and the state-owned Imo Broadcasting Corporation. Chosen Church of God seers boastfully started with an early morning prophecy that the dead young man will "resurrect" by 12 noon prompt. The digging up of the grave followed immediately until the body was exhumed. Then the singing, violent shaking, screaming, cursing, loud yelling and other theatrical displays in the name of deliverance prayers ensued while the large crowd of keen onlookers watched with deep interest. From 6 a.m. till 12 noon, there was no sign that the young man was preparing to wake let alone resurrect. Seeing that the 12 noon deadline had passed, the seers quickly issued another prophecy shifting the hour of resurrection to 3 p.m. By this time, the prayer and singing sessions became even more intense and violent. 3 p.m. came and went. No sign of life. The Chosen Church prophets again, quickly handed down another prophecy declaring 6 p.m. as the divine resurrection hour. 6 p.m. also went by, and the dead man remained still, lifeless and unresurrected till this day! Understandably impatient and angry after the 6p.m deadline, the policemen on standby arrested all the prophets, dancers, singers, clappers and everybody that accompanied them to the community. But before then, the Chosen Church prophets had forwarded messages to their head office requesting for spiritual reinforcement. Undeterred by the arrest of their team members, an additional team that arrived around 6 p.m continued with the prayer sessions even more aggressively and vociferously. They prayed and sang all through the night till the following morning. Still, no sign of resurrection! The police officers, who had then totally run out of patience, arrested the remaining Chosen Church members, and everyone connected to the resurrection miracle including the deceased's family representatives. Some of the arrested Chosen Church members are currently on bail, while a lot more are still in custody till date. The dead body was deposited at the morgue at the Federal Medical Center, Owerri, as exhibit, pending further police investigations and prosecution of the false prophets. I was present at the New Year church service held at St Lukes Catholic Church, Umuezii, Mbaise where the parish priest's sermon harped on the infiltration of false prophets into the Christendom, warning parishioners to be wary of them. He then invited the members of the deceased family to tender an unreserved apology to the community for the abominable acts they committed. (PICTURED ABOVE) The deceased's elder sister tendered what seemed like a half-hearted apology on the family's behalf. What happened in Imo State is reminiscent of the stories that feature on Nkan 'Nbe, a popular Yoruba TV Program that features latter-day mystical occurrences. The Imo incident provides a compelling and cogent rationale for the effective regulation of the nefarious activities of churches whose stock in trade is to constitute public nuisance and to deceive and hypnotize the gullible. As a direct result of this incident, some Mbaise communities have proscribed the activities of Pentecostal churches in their localities. All eyes are on the Imo State Police Command to see how they would handle this issue, and ensure that measures are put in place to deter future sinister activities perpetrated under the banner of religion. Perhaps, its time to ban the churches and their abracadabra miracles. That time is NOW! Pathetic Story Of A Nigerian Whose Kidney Was Stolen In Malaysia [MUST READ] Jan 6th, 2014 @ 11:51 am › Tolu ↓ Skip to comments We saw this story and we thought it wise to share it. It’s touching and shocking and we hope we all learn from it. I’m 26 years old and last year after graduating from one of the Polytechnics in Nigeria, I couldn’t get a job. I needed to travel out of the country to better my life and that of my family. I planned on going to Turkey but fell into the hands of dupes who gave me fake documents and I was thrown out of the Turkish embassy during my interview and almost got arrested. Standing outside, I met an old acquaintance, a young guy I met through a mutual friend. I found myself telling him about my plight and how I had been duped into paying for fake documents.I told him how my dad sold his plot of land to ensure I traveled. How was I going to tell them their money went down the drain? He then told me the best thing was to tell them I got the visa , so when my dad sends money for my flight ticket, I use it to go to Malaysia. He said he had an agent who would help me and also give me a job once I get there. He said several guys had gone to Malaysia too. I told my excited parents that I got the Visa and would need money for my flight. I raised 600 thousand naira which was sent to the agent I had never met and was given a 1 month visa. I got to Malaysia expecting to see the agent but never did. It was 3 weeks, no job, and paying my hotel bill, I had exhausted all my money. The so-called agent I had been calling suddenly switched off his phone. It was one week to the expiration of my visa. So I decided to step-out and find other Nigerians who could help me. I was unsuccessful as the two guys I knew way back in Nigeria were club bouncers and had no connections. Was shocked because they claimed to be big boys. I was on my way back from one of my unsuccessful outings. I was wondering what to do when a short Indian man intercepted me. “Hello my friend you looking for a job? I have a job for you. How will you like to earn 3 thousand dollars a month? I was speechless” He told me “Lets go and have a drink and talk about it” I was so happy. He took me to a spot not far from where we met. It was like a private house and I saw two other Black boys who the man introduced me to saying they were also beneficiaries of the job. I was just about to ask what the job was when a waiter brought me a drink and he told me to give him a minute to bring papers which would show me my job description. I don’t know what happened next. I found myself in an uncompleted building. I was confused at first and felt I was dreaming. But the cold was unbearable to be a mere dream and the sharp pain on the side of my belly was too intense to be real. I saw my shoes on the floor. I was confused. How did I get here? What about the job? Did I loose my chance by getting too drunk? Then I recalled I didn’t drink alcohol. I decided to put on my shoes when I noticed my legs were so swollen my shoes didn’t size me anymore.. I left the place with no money in my pocket, didn’t even know where I was. I tried to ask some Arabs to help but no one even listened to me. As I kept walking, I saw 2 security men and walked up to them. They were Nigerians and after telling them about my plight, they took pity on me and asked me to sleep in the factory where they worked for the night. They gave me some pain killers to relieve me.But advised me to go for a test the next day. The next day I told them I had no money to even go for a checkup and I was probably going to be deported as I had just one week for my visa to expire. The elderly one told me there was a job opening as a life guard at some private beach. I couldn’t be more grateful. I took up the job but the reoccurring belly ache which I kept suppressing with pain killers was getting more intense. Then after rescuing someone who almost drowned, the intense stress which accompanied that made me fall ill. And after several tests, they couldn’t ascertain what was wrong with me. I had used up all the little money I earned from my job as a life guard and I had no option but to give myself up to the authorities so I could be deported since I couldn’t pay for my flight ticket . I returned to Nigeria seriously ill and my parents took me from one hospital to the other and they couldn’t detect what was wrong with me. We went to several prayer houses even very popular miracle pastors who claimed it was evil people from my village chasing me. Destiny killers they said. I was ordered to fast for 21 days and four days later I collapsed . Then my father ran into an old classmate who owned a hospital. He told him about my plight and he told my dad to bring me over. He ordered a full scan to be run on me and while I was alone, he came to me and said” Young man, why did you have one of your kidney’s removed?” I was shocked ‘My Kidney? Sir I don’t get”. He smiled”At least if you want to have your kidney removed, do it well. You must have earned a few millions from it so what did you do with the money? Why didn’t you treat yourself properly?””” I was confused and I insisted I knew nothing and he showed me the scan. Yes one kidney was missing. He also said the closure was perfectly done and skin was used to cover up the stitch. He said only Indians did such perfect cover-ups. After insisting there was a mistake somewhere, the doctor said the fact was one of my kidneys was removed and he told me the dangers of selling my kidney which many Nigerian youths do these days to make quick cash I was in tears and I told him I didn’t know what he was talking about then I recalled the Indian man I met who told me he had a job for me . It hit me that that man had me drugged and took me to an unknown place and had my kidney removed and then dumped me in that building. Now I’m a 26 year old man who put my parents through hell and I’m now living on one kidney and very ill. I keep hoping this one doesn’t develop a problem. I want youths to be careful of where they go to and who they interact with.I just found-out its a cartel and several African jobless youths have been trapped and have their kidneys removed without their knowledge .. It’s a wicked world.. |

Kwankwaso’s silent revolution in Kano Posted by: Jide Oluwajuyitan in Jide Oluwajuyitan 1 day ago Poverty is a common affliction of our people. It strikes you directly on the face whether you are in Ughelli, Owerri, Ekiti or Kano. And the consensus of experts and friends of Nigeria including Britain and the US is that poverty in Nigeria is government-induced either through its policies that have no direct bearing on the lives of the people, or as a result of mindless looting of the nation’s resources by those who have access to power. What this therefore means is that the battle for poverty alleviation will have to be led by few in government ready to offer selfless service. I think when we see some that are making efforts at implementing policies that have the potential to reduce poverty among our people, they deserve to be celebrated. One such creative response to the scourge of poverty is Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso’s ‘organized mass marriages and empowerment of women’ in Kano, which he initiated at the onset of his administration three years ago. If his initiative received any attention at all, it could only have been in form of severe criticism by uninformed non-indigenes of Kano. In fact it was the scurrilous attack on the person of the governor in the social media by professional mourners who weep louder than the bereaved that compelled me to take another look at Rabiu’s initiative. It turned out in my view that the governor’s ingenious response to poverty alleviation in Kano which focuses on women training and women empowerment is a silent revolution. This is because the UN as a body has long established that the neglect of women in terms of education and empowerment, described as ‘feminisation of poverty’ is partly responsible for poverty in the Third World nations. The forth phase of Kwankwaso government’s ‘divorcees, widows and spinsters mass marriage’ programme of 1,111 including 60 Christian couples took place last week, at a cost of some N278.270 million to the government. This meant that government is investing an average of about N250, 468, on each couple. The amount according to the governor covered procurement of furniture, textile materials, foodstuff as well as grants for the brides and other essential items. Kwankwaso who wears the shoe and knows where the shoe pinches also stressed that ‘the marriage programme would help ‘people strengthen the family institution and halt social crimes in the society, most of which were as a result of erosion of family values.’ The governor has also initiated a special ‘family orientation programme aimed at preventing and minimizing the rising cases of divorce in the state in addition to evolving capacity building programmes especially for women to enable them support their families.’ The governor did not stop at that. His administration refurbished 20 cottage industries and handed them over to women co-operative groups accompanied with empowerment packages to the beneficiaries. With these measures in place, the governor has gone ahead to perform what was considered impossible in the history of Nigeria and West Africa,- signing in to law ‘the Street Begging Prohibition Bill 2013’ which prohibited children and adults from begging on the streets, motor parks and other public places. To give the law a human face, the state government would train 2,205 people with disabilities in various entrepreneurship skills that would suit their individual capacities. He has also promised to absorb those so trained into the public service while ‘’the state government will give N10,000 monthly to those with disabilities that lack the wherewithal to engage in any trade.” I think we must salute the governor for this bold and creative initiative. It will most likely succeed because of its focus on women who, studies have shown, will spend about 80 per cent of their earnings on their children. Rabiu initiative will also appear to have better prospects than the federal government nomadic school project which was a reaction to Boko Haram insurgency. As we have seen in the case of federal government involvement in ‘unity schools’ and federal universities, funding may dry up for the nomadic federal government initiative. In any case mere provision of school building and facilities to shelter those picked from the streets will not automatically turn those who are already hardened into good citizens. What we all know is that the socialization processes that will enable children imbibe positive values starts at the family level. I think Rabiu’s modest initiative can serve as a model for many of the states in the north currently battling the social malaise of almajiris who often become easy tools for violence and other crimes. Empowerment of over 1000 women in Kano has the potential of grooming about 10,000 children yearly for a secured future. Of course other states outside the north also have much to learn from Rabiu’s initiative. What some of the virulent southern critics of Rabiu initiative have failed to see is the parallel between the social malaise called almajiris and thousands of young men who cannot read and write hawking smuggled substandard products on the streets of Lagos and other southern major cities. If this southern equivalent of northern almajiris are not taken off the streets and trained, they are going to become a threat to those we are currently investing on as leaders of tomorrow in our various universities. And already in Lagos, it is the focused leadership of Governor Fashola that has invested heavily on security, which has reduced incidences of gun totting ‘hawkers’ holding up motorists inside traffic demanding for money, trinkets and telephone handsets. Besides Kwankwaso’s modest efforts at attacking the root course of poverty and securing a better future for Kano children, he is said to be setting the pace in other areas such as leadership by example, transparency and accountability in governance. Dapo Thomas in a piece in last Sunday edition of The Nation called attention to Kwankwaso’s unique attempt at removing the myth of secrecy surrounding governance by advertising the minute of his state Exco meetings every week, spelling out in details, debates on government policy initiatives and policy implementation for everyone to see. Cited in one of such advertised minute of Kano exco meeting by Thomas was the approval of Kano State Scholarship Board’s recommendation and government approval of N320, 000 to each of the 53 Kano indigenes that qualified for Law school. Kwankwaso’s modest efforts are aimed at reclaiming the soul of Kano, a beautiful city of life, energy and humanity, a city with paved ways, uncharted safe alleys and ever bustling Kirki market where the heterogeneity of our nation is in full display daily as one encounters a Christian Yoruba woman trader momentarily take over the wares of her Hausa co-trader observing one of the five daily mandatory Muslim prayers. But it is also a challenge to not only his brother governors but also the federal government where we hear stories of missing N500b SURE-P funds, NNPC unremitted $48b now negotiated down, to $ 10.8b, N500b missing kerosene subsidy payment etc. There was a report by a committee set up by President Jonathan to look into issue of abandoned projects early this year which stated that, if no fresh projects are initiated, it will take three years of annual capital budget to implement abandoned projects on which substantial payments had been made. These contractors are Nigerians and some of them are in government. The 2014 budget proposal was presented to the National Assembly early this week, yet not even the constituencies have been told what percentage of the constituency projects supervised by the lawmakers was implemented. Kwankwaso is set for the battle for the soul of Kano. Talk to Kano tomato retailer or orange hawker in Lagos, they will tell you of a cousin in Malaysia or USA on scholarship. But beyond this, he has also hinted at the source of pervasive poverty in our nation and has demonstrated by his own personal example that it can be eradicated by a leadership style that removes the myth of secrecy about governance. in |
