please did you make headway with the driving extract?. I would need any info you finaaly got please..anticipating your reply.thanks

Hi Hi, got about 3 different contacts. 15k/35k/70k grin
As expected, I've gone with the guy who said 15k, worked on the request letter and he says it'll take 2-3 weeks (same thing all others said).
Saw a post on telegram which stated that it was free and all you had to do was send an email to FRSC and expect that it'll take upward of 2 months to get it (don't know how effective this is but I'd rather not take chances to be honest)
Also, I don't know how much influence these guys have on the processing time but I'll be sure to share any feedback/recommendations once I get mine sorted.

Thank you for confirming this is still valid. Last question, any idea how to go about getting the extract from FRSC?
I've seen someone suggest an email to some FRSC addresses, I've also seen the Nigerian high commission in Canada website containing slightly different information with approximately CA$100 for application, any experience with this please?

Hi Fam, hoping someone has some valuable information regarding obtaining a driver's license in Ontario with a Nigerian license.
Tried to do some reading and searching but not quite sure if the drivers extract is still needed. Anyone with some experience with this? I'll greatly appreciate some concrete info and how to go about it.
Thanks in advance

BelovedQuerida:
Hi everyone. I want to share my good news (maybe?) and also ask some questions. By way of background, sometime in Feb 2020 (just before lockdown), I joined Nairaland because my EE application had just been refused for allegedly ‘claiming points for a professional degree in law’ even though my WES assessment of same indicates that it is a ‘bachelor degree in law’, and I needed all the assistance I could get. Indeed, God sent me angels from here who answered my questions and encouraged me to apply for a reconsideration/review. My application was eventually re-opened less than a month later and the hope was that we would receive PPR soon. That didn’t happen (full details on why later). So all through the covid lockdown, 2021 and half way through 2022, we heard nothing, despite several web forms raised and emails sent to addresses I obtained from the net.

Sometime in June, we received a request to redo our medical exams. From then on, we received a couple more requests and finally just last week, we received the ‘Ready for Visa Email’. I did not see it until after 2 days because it was sent to the first email registered with my account (which I changed after the initial rejection because my poor heart couldn’t take any more disappointments) and not the one currently listed on my account.

So now to my questions:
1. Even though we have received PPR email, there is no update on my CIC account - I read somewhere that this happens. Confirmations will put my mind at rest.
2. Which of the countries should we send our passports to and what is the process (submission, payment, etc)? I heard Accra and Kenya are fast, however, I have not been able to figure out the fees payable. My passport and my son’s will expire next year March, so we really need the passports stamped, so we can do first landing possibly before the end of the year, so please help.

PS: AOR was May 2019 - so almost 39 months (3 yrs and 3 months). Hope that encourages someone, however, I do not wish it for anyone.
I will share my full story when we get the COPR. Thanks in advance !

Hi Hi! Congrats on your PPR!

To answer question 1, yes, there was no update on my CIC page until counterfoil was generated. I still had in progress for most of the items and that only changed to "a decision has been made" after counterfoil was generated. I also did not receive any emails to this effect, I logged in to check when I received VFS email that my passport has been despatched back to VFS.

For the second question, I can only provide some information for VFS in Accra, the attached screenshot was valid as at April 2022 and held true if you were sending directly to Accra (cutting out Lagos/Abuja VFS)

i think as long as you're not coming thru customs and immigration or changing airports, you do not need a transit visa. you'll just change gates within the airport.

Thanks for this. Please do you know if it's same for transit? Say I use BA and have to transit in UK, gov.uk seems to suggest otherwise but trying to find out if anyone has actually been through this

Hello e-Fam,

Back again with my questions, also hoping this may be beneficial to someone someday.
I have my COPR and I'm looking to land in CA soon (I'm unmarried so anyone who wants to marry me please signify by show of hands cheesy )

Seriously though, does anyone have any information on going through UK to Ca? I don't have my PR card yet since it's my first trip to Ca post COPR, trying to merge my planned UK and Canada trip into one.

I don't hold a valid UK visa at the moment, would I need to apply for a visitor's or transit visa? My trip shouldn't exceed 3 days before moving on to Canada.

Thank you so much!

Been thinking about this thing for a while now and I have a gut feeling that at some point they'll begin to use it to deny certain facilities or privileges to people. I know its pretty serious in U.K that's why I asked.

Done countless readings on blogs and websites, seems the best thing to do is to get a financial advisor or just find a way to hand over anything that'll keep me from working and living there full time else it'll just become a very complicated thing.

NB: I am in doubt but do not have plenty or near enough dough to hire a financial advisor or a legal one, those services are mad expensive!! I'll just avoid trouble

GraciousWords:

You can read up on tax here and ask on the Living in Canada thread. My understanding is that once you are a resident (after soft landing maybe) your worldwide income is subject to tax. https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/international-non-residents/individuals-leaving-entering-canada-non-residents/newcomers-canada-immigrants.html Some may argue that you are PR after soft landing but do not have established residence for tax purposes. I think the criteria will be clearer if you read up and if in doubt and have plenty dough hire a financial adviser. cheesy

I don't know if filing or not filing tax affects citizenship. It may, who wants a tax evader citizen. smiley

You can usually renew your PR if you stay in Canada for at least 2 years out of the last 5 years and can apply for citizenship after living in Canny for at least 3 years. Presence calculator here

Thanks for the input.

I think the summary to the question would be if there are any tax or long term implications for those who intend to do soft landing. I've heard of a case in some other countries where people can't apply for citizenship because they don't have proper tax filings (and it makes some sense to me because I don't think countries give out PR/citizenship for one to reside outside and not add to their economy).

For your question, it's more of passion and empathy, putting in the brain work and effort to get it won, started and having handled this for a while now, can be a little painful to exit without seeing it through. Plus..I may or may not have a financial interest in it wink lol

AchieverJ:
I believe soft landing isn't a bad thing to do. When you land and apply for your PR card, be sure to use the address of a friend or family who will have to send it to you via courier. Takes about 3 months for the card to be ready. Another alternative is the permanent resident travel document, can't say how long the doc is valid.
As long as you spend the minimum amount of days in the 5 year period, there shouldn't be an issue.
About the taxes, I don't think you are expected to pay taxes if you aren't working in Canada. Others can weigh in on this.

That being said, out of my curiosity, why are you so invested in a particular project?
I once told my professional mentor something similar and he was like, there will always be another great project to be part of.
My candid advice, already start looking for job in Canada.

Hello eFam,

I assume someone might have asked this before but I can't get solid information online and hoping someone might have navigated this path before so thought to ask. Apologies if this is the wrong thread or I'm bringing back an old topic.

I recently got my CoPR (Yayy!!), However, I am in the middle of a project for my current company (To be honest, it's a project I'd love to see through and it's got about a year left and requires physical presence).

Now the dilemma, I don't want to wait so long before going to Canada, at least to get my PR card. I was thinking soft landing (I hope I'm using the proper term here, basically, go in, spend about a month or so, get my PR card, return to my project and see it through)

I am also concerned about taxes and all the legalities of being in Canada and working outside, do you know if this is likely to cause an issue when I try to renew my PR after 5 years or if I am able to apply for citizenship by staying 3 years in the first 5 years. Has anyone managed to navigate this successfully and didn't have any issues when renewing or applying for citizenship?

Any useful input would be greatly appreciated.

Hi
1. I paid RPRF upfront and I didn't attach the receipt when sending my documents to Vfs Lagos
2. Vfs will notify you via email through the various stages of processing your documents. Vfs will also provide you with a tracking number. It can take up to 2weeks before Vfs confirms that they've received your package.

Gracias amigo!

Hi Hi,
Please can you help clarify the following. I noticed the PPR emails people receive contain minute differences and can request slightly varying data or forms

1. Did you pay the RPRF upfront? If yes, when sending your documents after PPR, did you attach the receipt of the RPRF? Kindly see attached screenshot...I had paid RPRF upfront when submitting my application so I didn't bother going back to print and add the receipt

2. After mailing through DHL, any idea how long it'll take for VFS to confirm that they've received your package or what's the next likely step to track progress?

MrPein:

Yeah. You're required to pay the transmission fees. See details below:

This is the process to send your passport to Accra:
Submitting passport(s) to Accra VFS without using Lagos VFS.

Gather all documents required by IRCC and VFS Accra. Including payment teller(s) for the sum of GHC 405 to ( paid per person to vfs GH's account. (See further instruction on addendum 1 below)

Put all documents in an envelope and proceed to DHL or any courier of your choice and pay for a one-way delivery to:

Canadian Visa Application Centre(In Partnership with International Organisation for Migration),
Baptist Convention House,
Abelemkpe Road,
Abelemkpe,
Info.canghaiom@vfshelpline.com
+233 50 129 5270

VFS Global Accra, who will then submit to the high commission.

Addendum 1:
Bank details:
Bank Account name – International Organization for Migration
Bank name – ECOBANK Ghana Limited
Account Branch: Head office
BIC/SWIFT Code – ECOCGHAC
Account Number – 1441000695744
Address;
(cvac operated in partnership with OIM/IOM)

Payment can be made through any family or friend resident in Ghana. There are also agents who can help with this if neccesary.

Other Things to note:
1. Get your tracking number and monitor on DHL tracker till its recieved by Vfs gh
2. Wait for the VFS tracking details— they will give you update on when it will be sent to IRCC and when it will be returned to you
3. Wait for the return of your passport— VFS also uses DHL to return— you don't pay for it, it's included in the GHC 405

Anyone sent their passport to their VFS after PPR? How long did it take and how were you informed that it's been delivered?
Who should I expect to hear from next? VFS confirming delivery or IRCC, I've been tracking with the courier and I have an expected delivery date for the passport

Stay strong, we'll get there soon!!
