touchmeder:I can imagine how frustrating it is to be unable to explore a big city like london as you may have wished. You may be surprised to know that touring the city is not as complicated as it might seem. You can easily move around with the tube, there are maps everywhere, and if confused ask any of the staff at train or bus station. People are generally quite nice and helpful. Dont be shy to ask. I wouldnt not advice soliciting the help of a complete stranger from the internet. |

The crises rocking the Edo State House of Assembly reared its ugly head in Makurdi, weekend, at the just concluded Conference of Speakers of State Houses of Assembly, when the Edo State House of Assembly Speaker, Bright Omonkhodion, was allegedly walked out of the gathering by 35 other Speakers. The Speaker who stormed out of Benue Government House banquet hall , venue of the conference, refused to disclose the reasons why his colleagues from the other 35 states of the federation threw him out of the conference. However, in a communiqué at the end of the two day summit, Chairman of the Conference and Speaker of the Taraba State House of Assembly, Mr. Haruna Istifanus Gbanna, recalled the crisis that had engulfed the Edo State House of Assembly and the factionalisation of the House leadership. Gbanna explained that the conference premised its decision not to recognise the Edo State Speaker on the fact that the Edo Assembly was still in crisis, hence it was only logical that the factions in the crisis resolve their pending cases at the courts before seeking recognition at the Conference of Speakers. Meanwhile, in a swift reaction to the expulsion of Omonkhodion from the Conference of Speakers, the Afemai Peoples’ Forum (APF), an umbrella body of majority of Edo people, congratulated the Nigerian Speakers Conference for its decision. In a statement issued in Makurdi and signed by its National Chairman, Isah Aliyu, the group stated that “by preventing Omonkhodion from the meeting, the Speakers of the other 35 States’ Houses of Assembly in Nigeria have demonstrated that, the sanctity of our democratic institutions runs paramount in their hearts.” http://www.thisdayonline.com/nview.php?id=171931 |

No fewer than 51 persons died of snake bites in Kaltungo Local Government Area of Gombe State between August and September last year because of non-availability of anti-snake venom for the treatment of patients, says Medical Director in charge of Federal Government Snake Bite T0reatment Centre, Kaltungo, Dr. Saidu Abubakar Ballah. Saidu, who disclosed this to journalists while conducting them round the centre, said the centre is now being supplied with the drugs, stressing that snake bites have minimized. He said a break down of the number of the drugs showed that Federal Government had since last year placed orders for the supply of 10,000 vials, while the Gombe State government had acquired over 600 vials. He explained that the batch of 5,500 vials of the Federal Government drugs was being expected in the state. The medical director pointed out that Gombe State government had already supplied 60 vials to the centre to take care of patients, while additional vials would be supplied on request. Dr. Saidu Ballah noted that the centre presently had enough anti-snake venom to treat patients going to the centre for assistance unlike between August and September last year when it ran out of the drugs, which resulted in the death of 51 patients, the highest in its history. He noted that the centre recorded about 200 patients last month because of intense heat out of which three died because they were brought very late. The medical officer said the centre had within the last three years recorded over 600 patients (an average of 2,000 patients annually), while the number of deaths varies based on the availability of drugs and how early patients were moved in. Ballah explained that between 60 to 70 per cent of the patients came from neigbouring states of Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Taraba and Yobe for assistance. He however cautioned state governments against the indiscriminate purchase of snake bite drugs, which had in most cases been found not to be highly effective on the kind of snakes in Nigeria. The medical officer argued that the drugs they were using for the treatment of patients at the centre were the outcome of a highly professional research on Nigerian snakes between experts from United Kingdom and Nigeria, while the drugs were presently produced in England. Ballah however pointed out that arrangements had reached advanced stage for the establishment of another manufacturing plant in Kaltungo with the assistance of the United Kingdom through the Federal Ministry of Health. http://allafrica.com/stories/201004261171.html |

@ OMO IBO With a hung parliament looming, i forsee none of the parties can fully implement their policies on immigration. There will be a lot of debates and eventually the final draft will be severely watered down on this and other divisive issues from benefits to trident. Votes from ethnic minorities may not count much for the national votes may decisive in inner city areas viz council and parliamentary seats. |
@ Debosky Skys coverage of the election is reminiscent of what Fox did in the states leading to their election. There has been a clear bias towards the conservatives and their policies. I guess no ones surprised judging by Murdochs open declation for the tories. Sky cannot decide who wins but they along with their sister press hold a huge sway with the british public. The discerning are becoming wary of what they are fed by the right wing media and pick out what is FACT from mere SCARE MONGERING, HALF TRUTHS and PROPAGANDA. |
