what a shame. what disgrace. words cannot be found to describe the shame called Nigeria. these thieves are really taking us for a ride. they loot the country dry and go overseas to enjoy the loot. convicted criminal like igbinedion; law makers like David mark and bankole; and self-proclaimed Mr cleans like oshiomhole. i am seething. |
What could be described as a disgraceful waste of Nigerian public funds abroad has just taken place in the Sandhurst area of Johannesburg, in a mansion owned by the convicted former governor of Edo State, Lucky Igbinedion. The house, which sits on a 5 acre parcel of land, hosted the Nigerian Senate President, David mark; the Senate Majority leader, Teslim Folarin; Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State; former federal Minister, Sanusi Daggash; Governor Timipre Sylva of Bayelsa State; the former governor of Imo State, Achike Udenwa; and the embattled Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dimeji Bankole. Last night’s huge occasion was said to be a birthday party thrown for controversial London-based businessman, Terry Waya, who was on hand last night with a horde of girls. Others present included a former domestic aide to Obasanjo, Andy Uba; controversial businessman, Aliko Dangote; the former governor of Ekiti State and James Ibori’s sidekick, Niyi Adebayo; and former minister Sambawa. The former governor of Lagos State, Bola Tinubu was also a notable presence at the party. He held court in a corner of the massive living room and argued over the fate of his predecessor Governor Raji Fashola, vowing that Mr. Fashola would not get a second term since there was an earlier agreement that he would only do one term. As part of the celebration, the gang watched the third place match between Uruguay and Germany in an in-house movie theatre capable of seating 50 people. Mr. Igbinedion who was governor of Edo State between 199-2007, was arrested by the Economic and financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for embezzling over $500 million in monies belonging to Edo state. In 2008, he entered into a bizarre plea bargain with EFCC chairwoman Mrs Farida Waziri in a deal which saw the judge convict him of extensive money laundering but letting him off with a paltry fine of $35,000. As if pre-arranged, Igbinedion paid the “tip” in the courtroom from his bulbous attire. Among others, Mr. Igbinedion also owns a huge mansion in Abuja which is believed to be the largest personal house in Nigeria. It is one of many all over the country. The countries abroad in which he has properties include the US, Canada and South Africa. Mr. Oshiomhole, the current governor of Edo stayed at Mr. Igbinedion’s South Africa mansion last night. He left Nigeria late last week after firing his security chief, Sylvanus Eruaga, whom he accused of illegal bunkering, breaking of oil pipelines and siphoning of fuel, activities he said were against the public interest. It is not clear how his presence at this weekend’s foreign bash by his looting predecessor is in the public interest. One of the highlights of last night’s soccer party at Mr. Igbinedion house is the politics of the top legislators. Senate president Mark left the party around midnight to attend another party, but after his departure, the Speaker of the House, Bankole, arrived with his date. Some sources said the two politicians were avoiding each other. Most of the officials are expected to watch tonight’s World Cup final at the stadium. Mr. Dangote and his crew plan to leave soon after the match in his private jet. David Mark, traveling in an official Presidential jet, will leave tomorrow for Abuja, where the Senate expects to pass the budget on Tuesday. It was unclear, at the time of this report, when Mr. Bankole will leave the country, as the House of Representatives adjourned for one week to enable Bankole catch his fun in South Africa. Meanwhile, a group of Nigerian governors which traveled to Boston, United States, to attend the “Governor’s Forum” of US governors is expected to return to Nigeria today. A source at the National Governors Association told Saharareporters that the Nigerian governors invited themselves to the meeting. The six Nigerian governors are: Bukola Saraki (Kwara); Chibuike Amaechi (Rivers), Ibrahim Shema (Katsina), Ibrahim Shekarau (Kano), and Isa Yuguda (Bauchi). Last year, the Governors Forum of Nigeria also wanted to establish a training programme with Harvard University but a mass protest by Nigerians in the US and Canada forced Harvard to cancel the wasteful training scheme. http://www.saharareporters.com/real-news/sr-headlines/6508-south-africa-world-cup-final-nigerian-financial-criminals-converge-at-lucky-igbinedions-mansion.html |

The London Nigerian Rugby Football Club, a club which has become a hub for the Nigerian community in London, England, faces a race against time to secure its future. The club, which celebrates its 20th anniversary next year, has been given a two-week ultimatum by the Fulham & Hammersmith Council to raise £19,000 or be evicted from its clubhouse at the Linford Christie Stadium, Du Cane Road, London. Other than serving as a meeting point for London Nigerian players, the clubhouse also hosts non-rugby-related activities, especially among Nigerians living in the English capital as it regularly hosts events for CANUK (Central Association of Nigerians in the UK), ICSN (Igbo Cultural Support Network), as well as charity sporting events such as the annual five-a-side football tournament in aid of the Nigerian Society for the Blind. So the closure of the clubhouse would be a blow to the club and the local community. "We have been privileged to call the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham home since 1999 and we have developed an affinity for this borough," said the club's CEO Osahon Omokhodion. "We have always looked to try and reach out to the local community spreading the rugby gospel to local schools. Myself and my committee are doing everything physically possible to meet the council's deadline so that we can really kick into growth mode in this our 20th anniversary year and emerge from these difficult times ready for another 10 years in this great borough." Phenomenal start London Nigerian was a phenomenon when it started, securing eight league promotions in its first decade of existence. But recent years have seen the club struggle both on and off the pitch, with the credit crunch taking its toll on the club's abilities to meet its financial obligations. Now, the club's players - affectionately dubbed the ‘Playas' - are rallying together to find the money to save their club. At its peak, London Nigerian also provided a vital service to the local community through its Mini & Youth rugby programme running weekly training sessions for youngsters in the Borough while putting out seven teams in the U12, U13, U15 and U18 age groups. LNRFC also sent its coaches to 12 local schools to provide in-term rugby facilities. The club has also organised rugby clinics in Nigeria for players and coaches; the most recent being in 2009 when the club's head coach Roger Coombs, a former handler of the England U-23 side, organized clinics in Lagos, Warri and Port Harcourt. The club's newly elected committee has stated that one of its major aims is to re-launch the Mini & Youth programme in the 2010-11 season in conjunction with a strong recruitment drive to replenish the ageing senior squad. Losing the use of the clubhouse at the stadium will however curtail London Nigerian's abilities to kick-start the programme. FROM 234 NEXT |

"Man Bites Dog": Dining on Dog Meat in Nigeria According to Nigerian "chef" Bassey Umoh, eating dog meat can improve your sex life. Other common beliefs concerning canine cuisine include: * It offers special protection against withcraft. * It prevents poison from killing a person. * It can cure malaria. As a result of so much (mis-)information circling throughout Abuja, dogs are now becoming scarce in the capital city. In fact, many of Abuja's dog owners complain that their dogs have gone missing, suspicious that they're winding up in local dishes, like big dog pepper soup pot, which sells for roughly 80¢/plate. Personally, I'd never dream of eating dog, as I would only be able to imagine the face of my own dear, sweet pup staring back at me. Further, I assume most Western travelers would have a reaction much like mine. For some Nigerians, however, eating dog meat is a question of culture. According to one man, "I hear they eat frogs in certain parts of the world. But I tell you, no matter how you cook or dress a frog, I can never eat it." Well, okay. According to this bizarre but informative piece on the BBC, dog meat is so ingrained in Abuja's culture, that a substantial amount of slang slang has developed to support it, including the disarmingly amusing: 404: A dog is also called 404 after the French-built Peugeot pick-up van, a tribute to a dog's ability to run fast. Headlights: A dish with the eyes of a dog as the most prominent component. Gear Box: Dog's liver, heart and kidneys (usually more expensive than ordinary meat). Tyre: A dog's legs. Mr Umoh claims that eating a 'tyre' makes you a fast runner. Telephone: A dog's tail. Sentencing: The act of clubbing a dog to death rather than slaughtering it. Before you get all up-in-arms about Nigerains dining on dogs, be reminded that Nigeria isn't the only place in the world where dog is eaten. Would you eat it?
