SportsFifa To Keep Monitoring Nigerian Soccer Despite Late Peace Deal by snowdrops(op): 2:33pm On Jul 06, 2010
FIFA will continue monitoring Nigerian soccer for possible political interference despite the government backing down from threats to remove national teams from competition.

FIFA was poised to suspend Nigeria from world soccer — a move also affecting club teams, referees and officials — when a peace agreement was reached Monday.

FIFA spokesman Nicolas Maingot says it will "continue to monitor the situation closely."

The dispute began when Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan banned the national teams and ordered a probe into alleged corruption at the football federation after the Super Eagles' early World Cup exit.

Jonathan's decree breached FIFA rules which forbid governments intervening in soccer's affairs.

PoliticsJonathan; Facebook Pleas Changed My Mind by snowdrops(op): 2:16pm On Jul 06, 2010
Nigeria's president has said the hundreds of posts on his Facebook page helped persuade him to reverse his suspension of the national football team from international competition.

"I have listened to your voices," Goodluck Jonathan said in a posting on the social networking site.

He had banned the team for two years after their poor World Cup campaign.

He overturned his decision ahead of a Monday deadline from the football world governing body to expel Nigeria.

Under Fifa rules, government interference with national teams is strictly forbidden.

The president lifted the ban after the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) promised to disband and rebuild the side.

"I read your comments and took them into account in the government's decision to rescind the suspension of Nigeria from international football,"
Mr Jonathan said on Facebook on Tuesday.

The president, who only set up his Facebook page at the beginning of last week - two days before he banned the Super Eagles - has more than 76,000 Facebook followers.

"I had a meeting with the NFF today and conveyed my disappointment and those of Nigerians on this page and received assurances that there will be positive changes," he said.

"We must now work together to make sure that the NFF and our players do us proud in future events," he said, ending the message with his initials "GEJ".

Nigeria's Super Eagles were knocked out in the group stages of the World Cup taking place in South Africa without winning a game.

Goodluck Jonathan is only playing to the gallery in my view except there something i dont know or have not heard but,can somebody answer this questions for me:
1, what was done when 62 national assembly members left this country for south Africa with tax payers money to watch football.
2, what were we expecting when N1.2 billion was approved for the world Cup
3,what is the achievement of the entire NFF board in terms of football

maybe somebody should remind mr. president that The last time Nigeria withdrew from international football events, it did irreparable damage to the football team. After winning the 1994 African Nations Cup, General Sani Abacha banned the national team from defending its title at the 1996 edition in South Africa due to issues with South African President Nelson Mandela.
As punishment, Nigeria was banned from the 1998 African Nations Cup, and its golden generation of players such as Okocha, George, Oliseh, Amunike, Amokachi, Ikpeba, Yekini, Taribo West, Okechukwu Uche and others were prevented from defending the title and from possible victory at the 1996 and 1998 tournaments. By the time Nigeria was re-admitted in 2000, this golden generation had aged and were past their prime. Nigerian football has not been the same since
Mr. President should also be reminded that denying international football to the national team will stagnate growth and starve players of quality competition. It will also affect the work permits of UK based players like mikel,Yakubu, Yobo, Olofinjana and other Nigerian players that want to move to the UK. Renewal and granting of work permits is conditional on playing a stipulated number of matches for Nigeria’s national team.
OUR LEADERS SHOULD KNOW OR BE TOLD THEIR BOUNDARY ON ISSUES OF THIS MAGNITUDE
Very intelligent comments.

I wonder if the president expected us to win to world cup. The writing was on the wall after the nations cup debacle. It was no surprise that the teams to flopped in the nations cup performed similarly in the world cup. Apart from Ghana who didi Africa proud.

Lets just swallow the bitter pill and forget this suspension/banning nonsense. Nigeria football is corrupt. It did not get there overnight or in two years, but several years of absolute misrule.

Jonathan should wake up and hands off football. The entire NFF/NFA should resign and for once allow people that know something about football manage it ie ex-international players within the last 15 years.

and who told u he hasn't tarred major roads, repaired/ built hospitals, refurbished schools, built markets and taken care of security? some of u guys better get urself informed b4 u open your mouth to start talking out of ignorance. I lives here in Benin and I know what I am talking about.
Name the roads he has tarred other than ring road. We are not talking "patch patch" or uncompleted projects AKA Siluko, airport roads, etc. The other day the Oregbeni community petitioned the contractor handling a road project in their area as the contract was abandoned after the government paid 21 out of 35 million of the budgetted amount.

Tell me hospitals he has built? Doctors in Edo state are currently on strike. Or are you not aware? Mr "i live in Benin city and know it all".

Tell me refurbished schools and to what extent they were refurbished. I don't want to hear chairs been donated. Or name any school he has built from scratch since coming into office.

Or is it markets? And PLEASE don't even mention security. It took the Oba to rain curses before the citizens could even have a mild breathing space.

TravelRe: Is This Benin City? by snowdrops(m): 1:22am On Jul 03, 2010
Ring road is less than 10 raise to power 1000 of the land mass of Edo state. After 3 yrs in office this is all the government has to show for Billions of Naira? Pathetic.

I would rather most major roads are tarred, hospitals repaired, schools refurbished, markets built and security provided than "sit-down look" an artificial city circle, that all but represent a flower blossoming but will soon die off as soon as the next government comes into office. This is not a lasting legacy.

The great Prof. Ambrose Ali and Samuel Ogbemudia never wasted tax payers monies on these frivolities. But the invested on the people of the state, the result of which last for generations.
