President Barack Obama, to the chagrin of some Democrats, has spent much of 2018 on the sidelines to what top party operatives believe is a generational fight against President Donald Trump.
That ends Friday, Obama advisers tell CNN, when the former president unveils his midterm message in a speech that will be a more pointed rebuke of Trump's first years in office.
The speech at the University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign comes ahead of Obama's first campaign events of the midterms: A rally for a handful of Democratic congressional candidates in California on Saturday and an event for Richard Cordray, the Democratic gubernatorial candidate in Ohio, on September 13.
Obama is also planning campaign trips to Illinois and Pennsylvania in September, an Obama official said, as well as a New York fundraiser for the National Democratic Redistricting Committee, an organization led former Attorney General Eric Holder, Obama's longtime friend. Obama's office announced his first round of endorsements earlier this year and the official said his second round of endorsements will be released in the coming weeks.
The Friday speech will be "a pointed" critique of the current state of affairs in Washington, one Obama adviser said, where the Democratic heavyweight will be "much more, much more pointed about what's at stake right now" and how "people need to take their responsibility seriously."
The Obama team selected his acceptance speech for the Paul H. Douglas Award for Ethics in Government as the forum to lay out his midterm message because it offers a less politically charged environment for the President to explain his current political views.
"We thought it was important to find a setting where he can find a cogent, rational argument outside of the more chaotic campaign appearances that come this fall," the adviser said. "The speech will lay down a frame and his message for fall. He will lay out his views about where we are and where we go from here."
Another Obama office official said they could not say whether the former President will mention Trump directly but added that "regardless of whether he mentions him by name, it will be very clear who he is talking about."
The Trump era has complicated Obama's post-presidency. A series of former Presidents have avoided critiquing their successors and Obama has attempted to keep that tradition since leaving office two years ago. The distance has annoyed some Democrats, who believe their most potent weapon is sitting out the midterms in an effort to maintain decorum that has long left politics.
But Obama's foray into pure politics also threatens to ignite Republicans -- including the President -- who have made undoing much of his eight years in office a key objective. Trump, through Twitter and at campaign events, has shown little regard for his predecessors and would likely relish the opportunity to use Obama to rally Republicans in November.
Obama never said Trump's name during a fundraising speech he delivered earlier this year for the Democratic National Committee and instead urged Democrats to stop "moping" and get to work for candidates.
"If what you are doing requires no sacrifice at all, then you can do more," Obama told the crowd at a sweeping multi-million-dollar Beverly Hills home. "If you are one of these folks who is watching cable news at your cocktail parties with your friends and you are saying 'civilization is collapsing' and you are nervous and worried, but that is not where you are putting all your time, energy and money, then either you don't actually think civilization is collapsing ... or you are not pushing yourself hard enough and I would push harder."
That speech, in the eyes of Obama's team, was not a preview of the former President's midterm message. Instead, Obama's advisers believe his midterm message will more closely resemble the remarks the former President delivered in South Africa as part of an event honoring the late Nelson Mandela.
Obama used the remarks to warn against the rise of "strongman politics" and the "utter loss of shame among political leaders" who lie. The remarks were seen as a clear broadside against Trump, despite the fact Obama never mentioned his successor.
"The politics of fear and resentment and retrenchment began to appear. And that kind of politics is now on the move. It's on the move at a pace that would have seemed unimaginable just a few years ago," he told the audience in Johannesburg. "I am not being alarmist, I'm simply stating the facts. Look around — strongman politics are ascendant, suddenly, whereby elections and some pretense of democracy are maintained, the form of it, where those in powers seek to undermine every institution or norm that gives democracy meaning."
Obama began working on his midterm messaging around the same time he delivered the South African speech, working with speechwriter Cody Kennan and other members of his team to craft political remarks that deliver an effective rebuke to the current state of Washington while also inspiring Democrats to vote.
"I think people will see this as his unvarnished take on what is happening in the political environment right now," the adviser said.
Obama will quickly take the message on the road after he leaves Illinois.
On Saturday, the former President will kick off his campaigning for House members in California with a joint rally in Orange County for Josh Harder (CA-10), TJ Cox (CA-21), Katie Hill (CA-25), Gil Cisneros (CA-39), Katie Porter (CA-45), Harley Rouda (CA-48), and Mike Levin (CA-49).
All seven of those districts represent the best chance Democrats have to swing races from red to blue in November: Hillary Clinton, Democrats 2016 nominee, won each district, despite the fact each is represented by a Republican in Congress.
"Democrats need all hands on deck to take back the House, and we could not be more honored to have President Barack Obama's inspirational voice and unifying message on the campaign trail, with his first stop in Southern California," said Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee chair Ben Ray Lujan, a New Mexico congressman.
Obama will then travel to Ohio on September 13 for a rally with Cordray and Democratic lieutenant governor candidate Betty Sutton in Cleveland. Obama encouraged Cordray, the former Obama administration official and Ohio attorney general, to run for office and the race was long seen one the former President could get involved in.
Katie Hill, Obama's spokeswoman, said the Friday speech will be a continuation of a series of speeches the President gave during his final year in office, where he laid out challenges he believed were facing the United States.
"Next week, President Obama will offer new thoughts on this moment and what it requires from the American people," she said. "He will expand upon several of the themes from his summer address, including that America is at its best when our democracy is inclusive and our citizens are engaged."
She added: "He will echo his call to reject the rising strain of authoritarian politics and policies. And he will preview arguments he'll make this fall, specifically that Americans must not fall victim to our own apathy by refusing to do the most fundamental thing demanded of us as citizens: vote."

More than 3,700 card readers have been destroyed by flood at the Edo State headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), prompting the commission to consider relocating the state headquarters.
According to The Nation, workers usually had to scamper for safety whenever there is heavy downpour. This has been the situation for three weeks.
Abubakar Nahuche, Chairman, INEC Standing Committee on Estate and Works, who spoke after the recent damage was assessed, noted that several electoral materials were destroyed.
According to him, Information Communication Technology equipment was also damaged. However, he said the incident would not affect the commission’s preparation for the 2019 elections.
He appealed to state government to address the issue of flooding in Ikpoba-Hill area, where the state headquarters is located.
Emmanuel Alex-Hart, Edo Resident Electoral Commissioner, who spoke on the incident, said: “The flooding has paralysed activities at the INEC headquarters in Edo. Where the office is situated is a valley and when it rains, you have surface run-off of water from all the areas to that place."

President Muhammadu Buhari will have to pay the sum of N45 million for the expression of interest form and nomination form of the All Progressives’ Congress (APC) to seek re-election in the 2019 presidential election.

According to a schedule and timetable published by the party on Tuesday, September 4, 2018, presidential aspirants hoping to contest on the platform of the party will have to pay the sum of N5 million for expression of interest and N40 million for nomination form.

Governorship aspirants will pay N2.5 million for expression of interest and N20 million for nomination, while aspirants for seats in the Senate will pay N1 million for expression of interest and N6 million for nomination.

Aspirants for seats in the House of Representatives are required to pay N350,000 for expression of interest and N3.5 million for nomination, while aspirants for seats in the House of Assembly are required to pay N100,000 for expression of interest and N750,000 for nomination.

According to the schedule, there shall be no separate charges for running mates; and female aspirants and aspirants who are physically-challenged will only pay 50% of the required fees for all positions.

According to the party’s timetable, sale of expression of interest and nomination forms for elective offices will commence on Wednesday, September, 5, 2018. All forms are expected to be collected and submitted on or before September 12, 2018.

Nationwide congresses to elect delegates will take place on September 12 while appeals arising from the congresses will hold between September 13 and September 14.

The presidential primary to elect the party’s flag bearer will take place on September 20, 2018, with Buhari expected to win the party’s ticket with no major challenger in sight.

Primary election to elect party flag bearers in governorship elections will take place on September 25, while primaries to elect party flag bearers for the legislature will take place on September 27 and September 29.

The party’s national convention, where the APC’s presidential candidate will be ratified, will take place on October 6.

When we talk about breast cancer, we rarely talk about the men who are diagnosed with the condition.

So often, we assume breast cancer is exclusively a women’s disease, says Dr. Kristen Fernandez, medical director of the breast center at the MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center in Maryland.

“Men think they don’t have breast tissue, but they do,” she explains to MensHealth.com.

Guys have less breast tissue than women do, so their risk of developing breast cancer is comparatively more rare. In fact, guys make up less than one percent of breast cancer cases.

But the risk of a man developing breast cancer still exists, and Fernandez says many men often ignore the symptoms.

While guys don’t necessarily need to perform regular self breast exams, Fernandez strongly believes that guys should occasionally check for pain or lumps in their breast tissue. And if you do experience pain, “don’t ignore it” and see a doctor right away, she says.

In advance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October, here are four symptoms of breast cancer that guys should watch out for.

1) Lumps

Guys often ignore lumps on their chest, thinking they may have just bumped themselves while doing yard work, says Fernandez. But a lump in your pecs can be a sign of breast cancer. Typically painless, these lumps can be accompanied by tenderness in the area, especially when touched, she says. If the cancer has spread, swelling can be found under the armpit, in the lymph nodes, or around the collar bone.

2) Inverted nipple

As a breast cancer tumor grows, it begins to pull on ligaments inside the breast, causing the nipple to invert or become dented, Fernandez explains. Sometimes, the inverted nipple will be accompanied by dry, scaly skin in the area.

3) Nipple discharge


Guys may notice stains on their shirts and simply chalk them up to spills, says Fernandez. But if stains always appear on the same side of the chest, then it could be nipple discharge. This happens because fluid from the tumor builds up and leak out of the nipple duct.

4) Open sores

In extreme cases, men may develop an open sore on the nipple because the tumor is “almost growing through the skin,” says Fernandez. “That’s a cancer that’s sort of been ignored,” she explains. Since men have very little breast tissue, it’s possible for the tumor to push through the skin. The sore will look like a picked pimple, she says.

To calculate their hourly rate, we used the best available annual earnings and net worth information for each individual based on Forbes estimations. For the billionaires on the list, we found the difference between their 2017 and 2018 net worths (as provided by the Forbes’ 2017 and 2018 richest people in the world lists, published every March) to determine their annual earnings.

For music, movie, and media celebrities, earnings were taken from the Forbes’ 2018 Highest-Paid Celebrities list, which were provided based on compensation from June 2017 to June 2018.

We then divided all annual earnings by 8,760, the number of hours in a year, to calculate how much each person earns an hour.


Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg, and Alice Walton all make more than $1 million an hour, thanks to their multibillion annual earnings. Bezos rakes in the most, earning a whopping $4,474,885 an hour. To put things in perspective, that’s roughly 157 times the median annual worker pay at Amazon of $28,466.

The remaining six on the list earn six figures an hour, from Warren Buffett earning $958,904 an hour to former Hewlett Packard CEO Meg Whitman bringing in $102,739 an hour. Google’s Larry Page sits in the middle of our list, making a nice $924,567 an hour.


Of all the celebrities on the list, George Clooney earns the most, making $27,283 every 60 minutes. That’s no surprise considering he’s the highest-paid actor on Forbes’ 2018 Highest-Paid Celebrities list.

Kylie Jenner, the youngest person on Forbes’ America’s Richest Self-Made Women list, isn’t far behind Clooney, with hourly earnings of $19,006. That means Jenner makes the current median US salary of $45,552, according to data by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in just 2.38 hours.

Ellen DeGeneres, Lebron James, Taylor Swift, and Beyoncé are the only people on the list to earn four figures an hour — but that’s still way more than most people make in one month alone. The first three earn between $9,000 and $10,000 an hour, with Beyoncé coming in last with hourly earnings of $6,849.
