https://edge.punchng.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/Dr-Isa-Fagge-360x225.jpg National President, ASUU, Nasir Issa-Faggae More units of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, including the University of Ibadan and Ahmadu Bello University chapters, have voted for the suspension of the strike by the union during chapter congresses held nationwide. The union met with a Federal Government team led by President Goodluck Jonathan last Tuesday in Abuja. Government has promised to inject N220bn yearly into the public universities for the next five years. The ASUU leadership, after briefing the zonal coordinators on the offer, had directed the local branches to organise congress meetings between Friday last week and Tuesday (today). This is to enable all the lecturers to make input into the action the union would take after its NEC meeting on Thursday. As at press time on Monday, 20 of the 28 chapters that had concluded their meetings supported the suspension of the strike, while the remaining eight preferred that the varsity teachers pressed on with the strike. The teachers in the University of Abuja, for instance, supported the suspension of the strike but listed conditions that must be met by the Federal Government. A source at the meeting on Monday said the congress demanded that the withheld three months salaries of the lecturers must be paid. “Members also demanded for commitment on funding. We also want assurance from government that no lecturer will be victimised on the account of participating in the strike. We also asked that the template for sharing the earned allowance should be prepared within the next two weeks,” the source added. The conditions were the same for Nasarawa State University, which voted for continuation of the strike. Chairman of ASUU in the school, Dr. Theophilus Lagi, told our correspondent after the congress that as far as his members were concerned the strike should continue. He said, “There are certain grey areas that must be cleared. The ‘no work no pay’ policy must be sorted out. Government must pay lecturers the arrears. “We also need evidence that the N200bn that government promised to release this year is in the central bank. We are not going to suspend the strike until the money is there and available for sourcing. That is the position of the congress. “Nobody trusts government. They have been making promises since 2009 and nothing has been implemented except the N30bn earned allowances. “Secondly, the 2009 agreement is due for review; nothing has been said about that. Lecturers have been denied salary for three months, those monies must be paid.” Among the universities that supported that the strike be called off are Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria; Federal University of Technology, Minna; University of Lagos; University of Ibadan; University of Calabar; University of Port-Harcourt; Federal University of Technology, Akure; Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto; and Ekiti State University. The list also include the Federal University of Technology, Owerri; Delta State University; Bayero University Kano; Imo State University; Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta; and Olabisi Onabanjo University, among others. On the other hand, majority of lecturers at the University of Benin; and University of Jos wanted the strike to continue. However, in the Bauchi zone of the union, five universities voted for continuation of the state strike, while the remaining three threw their weight against the continuation of the strike. http://solutioncrib.com |

A 34-year-old man, identified simply as Sunday, is now cooling his feet in one of the cells of Ekiti State police command headquarters in Ado Ekiti, after he was arrested for alleged causing the death of a 13-year-old girl he was said to have defiled. Police told newsmen in Ado Ekiti on Friday that Sunday allegedly committed the offence in Eyio-Ekiti community in Irepodun/Ifelodun Local Government Area of the state on Monday, October 28. A source in Eyio community told newsmen that Sunday and the parents of the late girl were labourers in the same farm. The source added that a search party was raised for the girl and it searched for three days before her decomposing body was found in a cocoa plantation, adding that the suspect was in charge of the cocoa plantation while the victim’s parents were in charge of palm tree plantation. He alleged that Sunday and the victim went to the farm on the fateful day and further alleged that he tricked the girl to a far corner of the cocoa plantation and forcefully had carnal knowledge of her. The source, who said the girl must have died due to excessive bleeding, also revealed that Sunday must have covered the victim’s mouth with a wrapper, thereby suffocating her to death. The source said, “When the parents of the girl could not find their child till 8.00 p.m. on Monday, the second day, the Eyio-in-Council held a meeting and insisted that the girl must be found at all cost, so members of the O’odua Peoples Congress mobilised into the bush and combed everywhere. “But when they could not find her, they later contacted the police. The police now joined the search party. When they got to a portion in the farm, the police perceived an odour and they traced the spot and found her body with blood from her private part.” He said Sunday was immediately arrested by the OPC being the only person in the farm that day and, upon interrogation, he was said to have confessed to committing the crime before being handed over to the police. THE Federal Government, on Thursday, disclosed plans to revisit the posting policy of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), to see how serving corps members would be retained in their places of primary assignments, instead of being used as cheap labour. This was disclosed in Abuja by the chairman of the governing board of the NYSC, Chief Gordon Bozimo, during a visit to the Minister of Sports and the Supervising Minister of Youth Development, Bolaji Abdulahi. According to him, the board was working towards empowering youths to be self-reliant after service year, through the skills acquisition programmes. Chief Bozimo said since the inauguration of the board, it had held series of meetings to look into the problems confronting the NYSC. He said the board would also work closely with stakeholders in the agriculture sector to improve the economy of the country. “Essentially, what we try to do is to find out the status and see how we can add value, if there could be changes in the routine of how things are done, so that the NYSC can once again be something to look forward to by the youth,” he said. Responding, Abdulahi lauded efforts of the council to reposition the corps, adding that the Federal Government would continually assist the board members in their quest to re-position the NYSC. The Senate, on Thursday, unanimously agreed that the maximum punishment should be meted out to a police corporal, Anthony Onoja, for allegedly sexually assaulting a two-year-old girl. This was as it also urged the Inspector General of Police, Alhaji Mohammed Abubakar, to commence prosecution of the police officer who was said to have committed the offence at Mararaba in Nasarawa State about two weeks ago. The upper legislative chamber, in its resolution, also condemned the act in its entirety and consequently, mandated its committee on Police Affairs to investigate the matter and report back within one week. The Senate resolution followed a motion, “Cruelty to Infants”, moved by Senator helen Esuene. She said Nigeria had been witnessing various acts of cruelty to babies, including kidnapping, abuse and outright sales as cheap commodities. Esuene recalled that the recent incident was a case of criminality meted to a two-year-old girl, Chinwendu Onwudiwe, by a man who was supposed to up-hold the law. According to her, the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), on October 20, reported the alleged sexual assault on the two-year-old by a neighbour who, incidentally, is a police officer. She said even though the matter was immediately reported to the Police, the case was yet to be charged to court. “Sections 31 and 32 of the Child’s Right Act make this case a criminal offence which attracts life imprisonment or 14 years jail term, depending on the nature of abuse. “This is not the first time it has been reported in this hallowed chamber of a police officer sexually abusing an infant girl. “The Senate should note the unacceptable situation of rape offenders often going unpunished. “There is the need to arrest this impunity and weed out bad eggs and protect the image of the Nigeria Police. “The Senate should note that, because of the innocence of our minors, they are very vulnerable to different forms of abuse by unscrupuluos persons”, she said. Senators, who took to the floor to speak after Esuene, roundly condemned the rape incident, saying it bothered on insanity, sheer wickedness and for ritual purposes. Deputy Senate Leader, Abdul Ningi, dismissed the incident as a mental case, saying its un-African and inhuman. He admonished that the country returns to its history and core moral values, which emphasised human dignity. “What this motion informs us is that as long as we don’t go back to history, as long as we don’t go back to humanity and begin to appreciate our culture and history as Africans, some of these anomalies would continue to happen”, he said. Senator Chris Anyanwu was of the opinion that, as a way of curbing the social malaise, there should be a system that would protect the identity of people who lodge reports and complaints of rape incidents. “I am not surprised by this incident. They are bound to continue; things are going bad and we are not doing anything.” Read The Latest News Trending And Gossip Here Now |

THE interim deputy national secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, has said based on the ongoing talks with the Baraje-led New Peoples Democratic Party (nPDP), the G7 governors of PDP may soon join APC. el-Rufai, speaking with newsmen on his arrival at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano, said the rationale behind his visit was to interact with stakeholders, so as to map out strategies ahead the 2015 general election. When asked if the consideration of the factional PDP members would not undermine the manifesto of APC and its criticism of the leadership style of the PDP-led Federal Government, the former Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) insisted that there were some good elements among PDP members who were already tired of the present situation in the country. “It is well known that not all PDP members are bad. Going by the way the new PDP members were going, it is clear that there are still some members of PDP that are not happy with the way President Goodluck Jonathan is running the country. “Therefore, if these people now regard themselves as new PDP and were confronting their party, it is an indication that there are still a few people within the party that believe in change. “Based on this and the principle they stand for, they are welcome to join the APC, in order to effect the change the generality of people are yearning for and it is only the APC that is capable of bringing the change,” he said. He assured that with the political antecedents of APC leaders, the party would not disappoint Nigerians in its advocacy for good governance. Kano State governor, Dr Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, had, during the Hausa service of Vision FM Radio, in Abuja, on Sunday, said himself and other aggrieved governors in the PDP were open to four options in their ongoing battle with the Bamanga Tukur-led party. The governor said one of the options was to defect to the mega opposition party, APC. Other options, according to him, included finalising the ongoing reconciliation efforts by President Jonathan; aligning forces with an unpopular party; or floating a new political party. The governor lamented what he described as the lack of will to address the group’s grievances by both the party leadership and the president. “None of all that we demanded from the party and government, which we see as the way forward for the party, was fulfilled. Therefore, it is surprising to see a party that is toying with its warfront commanders. “We don’t want to leave the party. But if leaving PDP is what will only save our states and people, we will leave it. As such, we call on people to support us on that, because our concern is to ward off anything that will harm our people,” he added. http://solutioncrib.com/forum/783/g7-govs-ready-to-join-apc--el-rufai.html |
https://informationng.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/dating2.jpg If you’ve been swimming circles around the dating pool with no luck, chances are you’re getting bored of going from one bad date to another. If that’s the case we’re here to help. We put together some simple tips for making dating fun again. So before you lose your faith in love for good, check out our tips for getting back into the excitement of dating. 1. LET GO OF EXPECTATIONS Once you’ve been on enough dates, you start to get bored of the whole process and then every dinner, movie or picnic in the park becomes a breeding ground for expectations. You start hoping every guy you meet will be the one. But going into a date with any kind of expectation is always risky and could set you up for disappointment. The more you go in with an open mind and avoid any preconceived notions about how you may or may not feel, the better the date will go. 2. THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX Since there are only so many movies you can see and so many restaurants you can go to before they all seem the same, one of the best ways to bust dating boredom is to do something non- traditional. First dates especially can be pretty nerve wracking so doing something different to help take the pressure off. Here are some ideas to think about: Play a round of mini golf Art gallery hopping Go hiking if there are trails close by Drive to a nearby town or city to have dinner there rather than where you both live Go bowling 3. TAKE THE LEAD You might have more fun on your next few dates if you take more of an active role in making sure the evening goes well. For example, if you’re at a restaurant where the service is awful and the food sucks, suggest skipping dessert and heading to your favorite bar for a nightcap, or if you can’t stand the thought of seeing the movie he suggested, tell him and offer an alternate. Just going with the flow can be fine, but when you see an opportunity for improvement, you shouldn’t be afraid to point it out. 4. DO SOMETHING ACTIVE Never mind sitting in a movie theatre – why not work up a sweat? OK, sweating on a first date might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but doing something that gets your endorphins flowing can be a great way to spend an afternoon with a new guy. Over 2,000 workers of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria, PHCN, embarked on a protest Monday, over the delay in payment of the severance benefits to about 55 per cent of electricity workers. The workers, under the aegis of the National Union of Electrical Employees, NUEE, staged the protest at the Eko and Ikeja Electricity Distribution Companies and threatened to commence indefinite strike on November 1. The workers locked the gates to the two offices and prevented people from entering the premises. "The reports reaching the union is that majority of banks cannot give financial backing to the schedule sent to them by the Federal Government. This means that government does not have money,'' Adeleke Ibrahim, the Chairman of Lagos Chapter of NUEE, who led the protest, told the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN. The union official said that if the workers' entitlements were not paid by the end of October, the entire workforce of PHCN in all the 36 states will embark on indefinite strike. Mr Ibrahim said the union was not against privatisation of the company. "But government should pay all workers' entitlements before the new owners will commence operation," he said. He appealed to government to ensure that all the agreements it signed with the workers were met to avert the strike. Mr Ibrahim said that some of the issues in contention included non- payment of retirement savings to pension fund administrators and non-remittance of dues of two per cent deducted from workers' salaries to the unions. Others are non-payment of benefits of retirees who disengaged in 2011 and non-regularisation of service of some casual workers. http://solutioncrib.com/forum/775/phcn-threatens-nationwide-blackout-if-not-paid-dues-by-thursday.html |

Sullivan Chime, has placed her under house arrest, and has cried out for assistance to human rights bodies to rescue her. In a letter dripping with pain and suffering, Mrs. Chime (pictured above with Governor Chime) disclosed that she married Mr. Chime in Oct. 2008 but that she has been unable to share the matrimonial bed with him for over four years. Describing her desperate situation, she said that even President Goodluck Jonathan and First Lady Patience Jonathan have intervened with her husband without success. “My father is late, my Mum and few of my siblings are confused and have done all kinds of prayers they know of, 3 of my siblings prefers me dead than to see me leave the Government house. He treats my Mum and my siblings bad,” she wrote. The Enugu State First Lady said she has been introduced to two psychiatrists whose names she gave as Dr. Onwukwe and Dr. Agumo, who have prescribed “all kinds of drugs that ends up keeping me acute depressed and also drives me into hallucinations.” The doctors, she noted, are scared of her husband the Governor, to whom nobody can tell the truth. According to the letter, the Catholic Bishop of Enugu state (Callistus Onaga), and top priests have come to intervene, as have the President and the First Lady of the nation, without success. Mrs. Chime further complains that Governor Chime has ordered her to leave with her four-year old son whom she conceived before their wedding. However, the governor, according to her, later threatened to disown the boy should she leave with him. “He has told everyone he can reach that there is no marriage between us that I can leave if I wish to but whenever I plan to leave he instructs them to lock me in. I have told him through Sms that I will leave my son behind and leave alone but still he instructed his securities to lock me inside the house.” Mrs. Chime further complains she has lost touch with the real world and all that makes her beautiful because of the side effects of the drugs she is taking, stressing that she is under house arrest for committing no crime. Of the situation in Government House, she said, “He does not take care of me personally, the government gives me allowance to run the house and that's where I save little from to take care of my elf, my Mum and few of my siblings,” she said in the letter. He shut me out of his life years ago; I don't have access to his apartment. The problem is enormous; I don't know where to start to explain from.” She said that even the security detail in the lodge has resorted to praying for her, while the few that can be bought with money are taking advantage of the situation. “Police and SS men have been instructed by Br Sullivan Chime to confine me in a place for a long time now against my wish [but] it is my wish to leave these premises,” she said, begging, “Please assist me to reach to the human rights and say to them to please come hastily and release me.” http://solutioncrib.com/forum/774/enugu-state-first-lady-begs-human-rights-groups-to-release-her-from-house-arrest-imposed-by-her-husband.html |
