Anti-bomb cop dies in Kaduna twin bomb explosions

KADUNA – A twin bomb blast tore through Kaduna yesterday, killing a policeman and injured a Senior Special Adviser to the governor, Col. Dangana Maman (rtd). The first one went off at Ungwar Sarki Market, Kaduna North Local Government of Kaduna State at about 11:30am yesterday. Ten minutes later, another blast occurred about 500m away, under a busy overhead pedestrian bridge instantly killing a policeman, Sergeant Sunday Badang, an anti- bomb specialist who was trying to defuse the bomb.

The first explosion took place opposite the Kaduna state Transport Authority, KSTA, park, while the second explosion occurred at Sultan Bello road still in same Ungwar Sarki.

Late Badang sources said, was killed while using a bomb scanner to ascertain an object suspected to be a bomb allegedly dumped by Boko Haram sect in the area, which was near the Sultan Bello Mosque – an imposing structure revered by Kaduna Muslims as their central Mosque.
Announcing the death of Badang, the state Police Commissioner, Mr Nasarawa said, “Today (yesterday)  at about 10. 40am  and 10.45am respectively, there were two explosions that occurred at Ungwar Sarki Bus Stop Kaduna.

“The first Improvised Explosive Device, IED, exploded in a gutter near a parked 15-seater bus. No one was affected but as the second explosion occurred, a police anti bomb personnel, Sgt Sunday Badang, was about to defuse it and the IED exploded and he was killed instantly.

“The fragment (of the IED) affected two other persons near the scene. They were rushed to 44 Army Reference Hospital, Kaduna, for treatment and the victims are in stable condition. The area was equally swept by the police anti-bomb squad and no other explosive device was detected. Equally we have beefed up security in the entire state and members of the public are advised to report any suspicious object to security agencies and to avail us with credible information that will nip in the bud, these criminalities.”

Meanwhile, soldiers and policemen had a hectic time in trying to control a large crowd of curious people under the bridge just as most banks in the Kaduna metropolis closed abruptly to customers at 2 p.m. following the two bomb blasts that occurred in the city.

Eye witnesses told  Vanguards at the scene of the explosion that shortly after the first bomb exploded, another polythene bag containing some objects was discovered under the bridge.

One of the eye witnesses, Mallam Sani Ali said: “After the first explosion, policemen and soldiers were attracted to a polythene bag kept under this bridge. Those who saw the first explosion at the market side said it came from a similar bag.

“The deceased policeman asked the soldiers to leave the place to enable him scan the polythene bag but as he placed his instrument on the bag, it exploded and killed him, prompting  people to run  away.”

The body of the policeman was still lying on the main road with more than half of his body parts scattered all around the places, as at the time Vanguard visit there, even as schools, banks and shops were being closed in the area.

About three weeks ago, multiple explosions hit one at an Army formations in which the lone bomber was killed in his explosive laden vehicle.
Meanwhile, some bank customers told NAN that the the closure of the banks would affect their businesses.
’’We cannot carry or leave large sum in our shops.’’
Mr Emeka Agu, a trader, expressed disappointment at the development, saying that the blasts did not take place near commercial or business areas.

Banks along Yakubu Gowon Way, Ahmadu Bello road and Bank road among other business areas, stopped attending to customers at 2 p.m.

Mr Beji Auta, a security man at the First Bank, noted that the bank stopped rendering services for undisclosed reasons, but guessed that it was intended to ensure safety of customers’ deposits

From detained Boko Haram topshot Abu Qaqa, came more stunning revelations yesterday on why the Islamist sect robs banks, besides suicide bombings. As he squealed, 12 people were killed on Sunday night in a shoot-out between the Joint Task Force (JTF) and members of the sect in Maiduguri, Borno State, even though a hospital source said it received five bodies.

Abu Qaqa, who the group denied being its spokesperson, but a top official, was arrested in Kaduna about two weeks ago on his way to honour Federal Government’s invitation for dialogue. He is one of the 30 high profile personalities in government’s custody as the crackdown on the sect intensified following the Januaty 20, 2012 multiple bomb blasts in Kano. The group’s deadliest attack so far, claimed 185 lives.

Qaqa revealed that whereas the group is funded by some politicians, it also finds some other lucrative use for members’guns.When the group is cash-strapped, the members’ find recourse to carrying out bank raids to raise fund and keep the wheels of violence turning.
In one of such spates of diverse use of violence and guns, he said that Boko Haram members stormed a bank which he (Abu Qaqa) could not reveal its identity or location and harvested N41million. .

Qaqa explained that when a member is killed in action, the leader reserves the right to allocate the wife or wives to other members as adopted or new wives. Such ‘gifts of generosity’ are never refused by members because even the leader, Shekau, most times appropriates some of such widows after dishing out to other members or even before any other member gets. In one of such wife swap deals, Shekau, inherited one of the wives of the assassinated sect leader, Mohammed Yusuf, and still keeps her till date. Yusuf was killed by security agents in 2009.
From Qaqa’s revelations, it seems Boko Haram may have suffered a terrible blow by reason of his arrest, and he, in fact, noted that if he, Qaqa, could be arrested by security forces, or another kingpin, Abdullahi Damasak neutralized by the security forces, then any Boko Haram member is vulnerable and could spell doom for the dreaded group.

“Everyone lived in fear, more of leadership of the group even than security agencies. For instance, I never for once believed I could be arrested. I thought I was invincible. But now I have realised that if I could be arrested, if Abdullahi Damasak, the spiritual adviser, could disappear (arrested), then it is a matter of time before everyone is caught.”

But the windfall of the bank raid made possible by power of the barrel at last became a sore point in the body polity of the group. And Qaqa squealed: “A major source of distrust and acrimony in the group was the N41million got from the bank robbery that was not accounted for. Normally, the money is supposed to be shared among five groups: the less privileged, widows of those that died in the Jihad, Zakat, those that brought in the money, and the last to the leadership to be used in prosecuting the Jihad.

“We don’t know how this particular income was spent and nobody dared ask questions for fear of death. Even those that took part in the robberies are also always compelled to pay Zakat on their share to the leadership. The leader, Shekau, appropriates what goes to the widows, less-privileged, Zakat and leadership.
“The leader also gives out wives of those killed the way he wants and marries some in the name of giving them protection. For instance, he is married to one of Mohammed Yusuf’s wives.

Meanwhile, the JTF and Boko Haram on Sunday night claimed 12 people were killed in the gun battle.
Spokesman of the JTF, Lt. Col. Hassan Ifijeh Mohammed, who confirmed the gun battle with the sect at Budum area in Maiduguri metropolis on Sunday night, said on the contrary, the troops killed 12 members of Boko Haram at about 8.30pm. He said two of their personnel were however injured.
The JTF said it has observed that some individuals were allowing their places of worship and business centres as well as residences to be used by the Boko Haram to launch attacks on security agencies. He warned that the task force “will deal with the issue appropriately.”

But sources at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) mortuary claimed that five bodies were brought to the morgue yesterday morning.
In its account, Boko Haram told journalists in a telephone interview yesterday afternoon that the sect ambushed the soldiers around Budum, killing about 12 of them. The sect said the attack was a warning to the security agencies that it has not abandoned its course, adding that it will attack Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and telecommunication service providers particularly in the northern part of the country for collaborating with the security agencies to reveal data that led to the arrest of their members.

The group said that it would no longer issue any warning on planned attacks again as it used to do in the past, insisting that warnings were treated with kid gloves by the people and security agencies.
Reacting to the allegation of foreign sponsorship especially from Saudi Arabia, the group said it did not get sponsorship from any where. “There is no foreign sponsorship from any foreign country or body. It is a mere allegation and there is no truth in it, it is all tissues of lies.” The group maintained that there was no division among the sect members contrary to the claims of one of them in the custody of the SSS.
In another development, there was heavy gunshot yesterday afternoon as security operatives attached to the gate of Kaduna State Government House shot a man , believed to be on a suicide mission.

But Governor Patrick Ibrahim Yakowa and some top government functionaries were said to be in Abuja for a public event during the incident.
The absence of the governor, did not, however, stop the security operatives from resisting the alleged attempt.
The alleged suicide bomber was said to have been rushed to the 44 Army Reference Hospital, just a few metres from the Government House, even as he had earlier allegedly waved aside a good number of bullets with his bare hands, but couldn’t save the ones that hit his legs.

At Press time, the car used by the suspect was still being held by the security men to ascertain its content which was believed to be containing some explosives.
However, in a statement issued by the Commissioner of Police, Ballah Magaji Nassarawa said: “Today, 13th February, 2012, at about 1328 hours, a combined team of security personnel attached to Government House main gate, Kaduna, intercepted a Toyota Corrola saloon car with Kaduna State official Reg. No. Kaduna KD-06-A 04.

“The driver drove dangerously in a suspicious manner towards the Government House gate. The security personnel stopped the lone occupant but instead of stopping, he forced himself through the exit gate and found his way into the Government House.
“The security agencies thereafter, opened fire and shot the suspect on the leg and the lower abdominal part of his body.
“The suspect was later identified as Pastor Isuwa Kiforo (M) of no. 7, Abba Rimi road, Narayi, Kaduna, who is the Director, Finance and Administration, Ministry of Information, Kaduna State.”

LAGOS — Embattled Commissioner of Police, Zakari Biu, who is currently being investigated over the dramatic escape of Kabiru Abubakar Dikko, a.k.a. Kabiru Sokoto, the alleged mastermind of the Christmas day bombing of St Theresa Catholic Church, Madalla, Niger State, in which over 40 lives were lost, yesterday opened up on his plight and trial.

The Commissioner of Police who was immediately detained after the escape of the suspect, and later whisked away by a combined team of military men and officers of the State Security Service, SSS, told Vanguard over the telephone that he did nothing to undermine the interest of the Nigeria Police Force and the nation at large, promising to tell his story when the time is ripe.

He told Vanguard on phone that his life has always been full of controversy.

His words: “My life has always been like that – full of controversy. I am sure that there is nothing that I did to undermine the interest of the Nigeria Police Force, NPF, and the nation for the personal benefit of Zakari Biu. At this stage, I don’t want to say anything yet. Government has set up a panel.

A reliable security source who has been part of the plans to contain the group disclosed to Vanguard in Abuja that already useful revelations had been made by the arrested Boko Harma Chief which would lead to major breakthrough in stopping the activities of the group.

According to the source, the Department of State Service would go to any lenght to ensure that all those connected with the Boko Harm group are brought to answer questions.

“Qaqa’s arrest has been a major asset to us and since we picked him up and started interrogation, we are getting the lead to others who are connected with the group.

“We shall do our own job very well and then hand him over to other authorities. The fear of the system is that the people in judiciary should collaborate by ensuring that they put national interest first when these suspects are brought before them.

“Many of the judges are fond of releasing these suspects on bail in the name of ensuring their fundamental rights. This is the time when the judges should cooperate in helping to arrest this terrorist group”.

The source revealed that the arrest of Qaqa paved the way for the re-arrest of Kabiru Sokoto, who had escaped from Police Custody in January this year in a controversial manner.

Gunmen kill man for publicly criticising Boko Haram

KANO  (AFP) – Gunmen in Nigeria’s flashpoint city of Kano on Thursday shot dead a man known for publicly criticising Boko Haram Islamists, blamed for a series of recent attacks in the area, residents said.

Alhaji Muhammadu, 60, was shot by two men riding on motorcycles as he left a mosque in the Hoton Fulani area Kano city. He died in hospital.

“We had just finished our evening prayers and he was heading home when two men on motorcycles stopped close to him and shot him twice before they drove off,” resident Maikudi Danlami said.

“They were from all indication members of Boko Haram because after shooting him they said, ‘let’s see how you are going to be critical of us. Let’s see what your boasting can achieve,” said Danlami, who witnessed the shooting.

A nurse at a local hospital said Muhammadu “was shot twice at close range.”

Residents said that Muhammadu was known for openly criticising Boko Haram, who have claimed a series of attacks in Kano, including a January 20 assault that killed at least 185.

“He never hid his aversion to Boko Haram and would voice his disapproval of the sect publicly,” said Hasan Kawu, another resident.

The Boko Haram insurgency has already claimed more than 200 lives this year. The Islamists have largely struck at the police and other symbols of authority, but Christians have also been targeted.

In a leaflet distributed around Kano last month, Boko Haram said it would target anyone who “collaborates” against the group, “even if he is a Muslim

Illegal admission: ESUT expels 544 students

Enugu State University of Science and Technology, (ESUT) on Thursday announced the immediate expulsion of about 544 students.
The affected students were  alleged to have secured what was termed as illegal admission into various faculties in the institution.
Most of the affected students were said to be in their final year.
Serious tension has gripped the university community as most of the affected students have threatened a showdown with some of the university officials who reportedly facilitated their illegal admission into the institution.  
A press statement issued by the University’s Director of Public Relations, Mr. Ossy Ugwuoti said the expulsion is with immediate effect.
"The Senate of the University at its 232nd meeting observed that students from various faculties and departments of study had secured admission illegally into the university.
“The Senate has therefore directed the affected students, who are at their various years of study to stop participating in all school activities, return all ESUT materials in their possession and vacate the University premises immediately," he said.
The University authorities also warned that any of the affected students found on the campus of the university would be arrested,  adding that the names of the affected persons had been forwarded to the police for necessa act
