Black Thursday: 32 burn to death, 18 crushed in multiple accidents

Bauchi – An automobile accident on Azare- Potiskum road in Bauchi and Yobe states on Thursday claimed 32 lives, the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) said. Also 18 people were crushed in a multiple accidents at the foot of the Niger Bridge in Anambra State.

The Spokesperson for FRSC in Bauchi, Malam Ibrahim Geidam, made the confirmation in Bauchi, saying the accident, involved two Yobe Line buses about 11.45 a.m.

He said that all occupants, including the two drivers, died when the buses coming from opposite directions collided and caught fire.

Geidam said one of the buses was coming from Kano and heading to Potiskum while the other was coming from Damaturu and heading to Kaduna.

“The accident occurred about 10km away from Azare town, near a village, called Kuskure, and it involved two commercial buses owned by Yobe Line Transport Company.

“We learnt that one of the buses was travelling to Potiskum from Azare while the other one was heading for Kaduna from Damaturu in Yobe State,” he said.

He said that from all indications, the vehicles were over-speeding and trying to change their lanes. .

He stated that the 32 bodies had been deposited at a mortuary in a hospital in Azare town. (NAN)

While in ONITSHA it was a black Thursday for residents of Onitsha, the commercial nerve-centre of Anambra State, as a truck loaded with two 20ft containers yesterday lost control and crushed 18 people in a multiple accidents at the foot of the Niger Bridge.

The accidents, Vanguard learnt, occurred when some urchins allegedly collecting emblem fees for Anambra State government forced the driver of the lorry with registration number XM 858 MUS to stop. The driver lost control in the process and rammed into other vehicles.

According to an eye witness who spoke to Vanguard, the lorry was entering Onitsha from Asaba when the emblems officials attempted to use wood with nails to deflate the tyres, causing the driver to lose control as he tried to dodge the dangerous weapons.

Of the seven vehicles involved in the accidents, four were commercial buses while three were private vehicles heading from Onitsha to Asaba.

The four commercial buses with registration numbers XA 556 BUR, XD 566 ABN, XA 893 ACA and AWK 526 XA were crushed, while so many of their occupants died on the spot.

Vanguard gathered that the 40 ft container fell off from the truck when the driver lost control of the vehicle and skidded off the road.

The vehicle was said to have rammed into one of the heavy pillars on the bridgehead and somersaulted, causing the containers to fall on some other vehicles.

An eyewitness, Mrs. Rose Iwuno, a survivors in one of the mangled buses, said the accident was avoidable, adding that if the urchins had not accosted the truck driver, the accident would not have happened.

She said: “We were going to Asaba through the other lane but suddenly, our driver noticed that the driver of the truck with two containers, which was coming into Onitsha, was trying to control his truck. Our driver tried to escape it but it was already very late, other vehicles were at both sides and even at the back.

“Then, most of us passed out but what I could remembers was a heavy sound, that was when one of the containers from the truck fell off and crushed a bus in front of us before rolling down towards our own bus.

“The number of casualties as it stands now, I cannot count but all I can tell you is that you see that bus that was smashed, I don’t think that anybody will come out of it alive because the containers were very heavy and there was no road safety people to help, so the casualties definitely will be up to 20.”

She said some of the victims were dismembered when the container fell on them, while others fell into the ditch as one of the victims who was still trapped under the container gasping for breathe but could not be helped.

At the time of the accident, no Federal Road Safety Corps official was on ground to assist the victims to nearby hospitals or mortuary, despite the fact that the accidents occurred right in front of the Onitsha unit of the FRSC.

The incident took another dimension when angry mob went on rampage and set the make-shift office of the Emblem collectors ablaze, while the urchins took to their heels.

It took the intervention of sympathizers and workers of the Consolidated Construction Company, CCC, who brought their heavy equipment, to lift the container and evacuate the dismembered bodies of the victims to an undisclosed mortuary, while the injured were rushed to hospitals.

The new Unit Commander of FRSC, Onitsha, Mr. Fredrick Oko, confirmed the multiple accidents and said he was still collating the number of casualties only to come up later to say only two people were killed in the accidents.

Anambra State Government yesterday razed the Nkwo Nnewi Triangle, saying it is a security threat to the burial of Dim Chukwuemeka Ojukwu.
Reacting to the outrage of traders and motorists in the park, Commissioner for Environment, Dr Mike Egbebuike, who led the team that demolished the structure said the government was committed in giving the late Ikemba Nnewi, Chief Odumegwu Ojukwu, a befitting burial and nothing would be a hindrance.

According to him: “I don’t know yet the full content of what we would do thereafter Ojukwu’s burial because we have to refer to the structural plan of Nnewi to know what that place is meant for. But for now, we are preparing it for parking during the burial. After the burial, we would give it an aesthetic touch to beautify the town.”

However, palace Secretary to the traditional ruler of Nnewi, Prince Joseph Ikeotuonye admitted being aware that the structures would be pulled down, as the traders had been paid compensation of not less than N250,000 each for them to relocate by the Federal Government.

In his words: “What they are doing is for security reasons. The world would be here soonest to convey their condolences to our deceased hero, Dim Ojukwu and so the shanties can’t be there. It has to give way, especially, since they have been paid compensation by the Federal Government of not less than N250, 000 each. Nzuko Ora will relocate them to a land already marked out for them.’’

President-General of Nzuko Ora (decision making body)Nnewi, Chief Agu Onyeka, admitted compensation was paid but did not want to say the minimum amount paid them as it was done before he assumed office. Hear him: “The place belongs to Nnewi community. We paid compensation to them, but they refused to relocate . Now that the burial of Dim Ojukwu is at hand, we met with the government and Igwe Orizu on that and agreed it is a security threat.

It has to go now that the Federal Government had even paid them compensation through Nzuko-Ora Nnewi.’’ But traders are alleging that the compensation was diverted, accusing the town of giving some of them meagre amounts, which were not enough to relocate them. They accused the Nzuko Ora of diverting the compensation.

The executive Governor of Borno State, Kashim Shettima has made a passionate appeal to the Federal Government to deploy more National Youths Service Corp (NYSC) members in the state, assuring that arrangements were in place to guarantee their security from the Boko Haram insurgence throughout the duration of their service.

Making the appeal when he paid a courtesy visit to the Minister of Youth Development, Alhaji Bolaji Abduallahi, in Abuja yesterday, the governor argued that no corps member was killed throughout the duration of the Muslim sect’s occupation of the state.“I feel highly honoured to pay this courtesy call on the Honourable Minister of Youths Development. I came specifically for three reasons, especially regarding the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) scheme, which fell under the honourable minister.

“Yes, we are passing through some security challenges, especially in the North-east part of the country. I’m talking about the Boko Haram insurgence. However, I want to assure the honourable minister and the management staff of the ministry that the war is over. “It took ethnic dimension but I want to announce that we have survived the criminal occupation of Borno State by this insurgence after seven years, seven months and seven days. I believe this time around that the war is over. We are on the part of peace and progress,” he assured.

Continuing, Governor Shettima further noted: “It is on record that no corps member in Borno was killed throughout the duration of the occupation.“I’m also aware that parents were understandably apprehensive about posting their sons and daughters to serve in Borno and other parts of the North-east, but I want to assure the honourable minister that we are clearly on top of the situation. We have made all necessary arrangements to protect the lives of both visitors and indigenes of the state.” Reacting, the minister promised to do everything within the ministry’s powers to reappraise the scheme, commending the governor for the efforts he had put to arrest the situation.

“You are the first governor from the North of Nigeria. I know the security challenge you are facing, I want to commend the efforts, and the Federal government and your State were making to arrest the Boko Haram insurgence. We are glad that the situation is getting better by the day. You know that government is very dynamic, we will continue to explore the situation and options. I can assure you his Excellency that we would continue to reappraise our position in line with the current security challenges.

“The NYSC is specifically created to promote national integration. 38 years after, the scheme has remained the vehicle for the promotion of national integration. I served in Sokoto and that was my first time of visiting that State.
“One of the things that the vendors of violence would want to achieve is to create a situation where we can no longer see ourselves as one country. It would be a victory to them to see a situation where we can no longer post corps members freely to some parts of the country. I can assure you that we would do everything we could to ensure that they did not succeed. We are going to sit down and review the whole scheme,” he noted

Boko Haram said yesterday that it was behind the raid on Koton.Karfi Prison in Kogi State when Corporal Richard Sesan was killed on Wednesday. In the 30-minute attack, the Islamist sect said it set free 119 inmates of the prison according to a Boko Haram statement, even as another bomb was found in Kaduna yesterday, 48 hours after a policeman was blown up while trying to defuse a device.

The development, coincided with the discovery of a bomb in Kaduna yesterday, 48 hours after a policeman was blown up trying to detonate an explosive even as the people at Baga Market in Maiduguri, Borno State arrested an armed Boko Haram suspect.

This is even as the apex Islamic body in the North, Jama’atu Nasri Islam (JNI) added a new twist to the Boko Haram menace, saying, Christians are behind the spate of terror attacks. Three policemen were killed by the sect in Minna, Niger State, yesterday.
“We staged the operation to rescue seven of our members there and Allah made it possible for the operation to be successful,” the sect told reporters in a conference call.

“They are safely in one of our camps”. One warder was killed in a shootout that erupted after gunmen hurled explosives at the gate of the jail Wednesday night, prisons officials said. Hadiza Aminu, the prison’s spokeswoman in the state, said the gunmen emptied the jail of all its inmates except one. At least 25 of them were recaptured Thursday, she said.

Mrs. Aminu said yesterday that the re-arrested inmates were picked up at different locations in Koton-karfi and other surrounding villages along Lokoja-Abuja highway between Wednesday night and yesterday morning.
She said that the service had launched a manhunt for the remaining inmates, urging them to report themselves voluntarily to the service immediately.

Meanwhile, barely 48 hours after a policeman was blown up by a bomb in Kaduna, a bigger explosive device was yesterday found at Mounted Troop Police Barracks, Kabala Doki in the metropolis. The Improvised Explosive Device (IED) that would have apparently caused more havoc was detonated by men of the police anti-bomb squad in Kaduna. The bomb which was placed beside a house inside the barracks was attractively packaged in a furniture adhesive container, was discovered by passers-by within the barracks.
Our reporter who visited the scene, gathered that strange faces who were not suspected to be bombers were noticed surveying the environment early yesterday.

An eyewitness told Daily Sun that, many children would have been victims if the bomb had exploded, adding that, the target area was the usual playground of children within the barrack. The eyewitness who simply put his name as Abdul, said his attention was drawn to the bomb by a child.
According to him, “a friend of mine even attempted to touch the bomb when a neighbour shouted at him from afar before we now left it. We now called the police”. “The Police Anti-bomb Squad came almost immediately and they were able to detonate the bomb and they took it away”.

However, there was a claim that the bomb was targeted at the ECWA Church located within the barrack, a development which was immediately dispelled by the Police. Police spokesman DSP Aminu Lawan said that the bomb was not meant for the church but police barracks. According to him, “the attention of the Police was called. Our anti-bomb squad promptly moved in. We saw the object. Our men then successfully detonated it. No one was hurt”. A new twist yesterday crept into the Boko Haram’s menace as the JNI claimed that Christians are behind the spate of attacks and killings by the sect.

The JNI declared that Christians were the ones disguising muslims to perpetuate terrorism in the country in the name of Boko Haram even as it advised the Federal Government to call Pastor Ayo Oristejafor, president, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) to order over his utterances. But the Islamist sect had always said it is fighting to ensure strict Islamic principles that are opposed to Western education. Most of the attacks had been on churches, military and police formations.

JNI said thorough investigations must be made to unveil the sponsors of those Christian terrorists as the umbrella body of the Muslim community in the country can no longer tolerate what it regarded as a ‘double face attitude’.
The organisation made this declaration at the end of a three-day retreat of its zonal coordinators, state secretaries, public relations officers, and administrative officers held in Kaduna.

According to a communiqué signed by the JNI Secretary-General, Dr. Khalid Abubakar Aliyu, “CAN president must tell his people to stop mischievously disguising as Muslims in perpetuating acts of terrorism.“Federal and affected state governments as well as all security agents should, as a matter of urgency, investigate the several reported cases of Christians, who disguised as Muslims to burn churches.“JNI can no longer tolerate this double face attitude. Therefore, thorough investigations must also be made to unveil the sponsors of those Christian terrorists”, the communique reads.

It further stated that, “the president of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, instead of contributing positively towards achieving national cohesion has rather chosen the path of insinuation and therefore heating the polity”.

While it condemned in totality the ongoing spate of bombings and killings of innocent Nigerians irrespective of their regional, religious or ethnic inclinations, the communique lamented that, “there are so many contradictions and confusion in the way the issue of Boko Haram is handled by security agents and the media”.
“Majority of the media establishments in the country, especially the Christian-dominated southern media have always demonstrated bias against Islam and Muslims,” the communiqué said.

While urging Nigerians to shun violence and embrace peaceful means of settling their legitimate grievances, JNI called on the Federal Government to call Pastor Oritsejafor to order, adding that, that was necessary “before he causes religious crisis in the country through his unguarded utterances which have started eroding the long built mutual respect between Muslims and Christians”. “We want to remind all Christians in Nigeria, that our love for peace must not be mistaken as a license to make us second class citizens in a country where we constitute a majority.

“We condemn in strong terms all acts of terrorism perpetrated by any group in Nigeria. As we remain confused regarding whether the Boko Haram members are known by the government as clearly stated that they are in the government or they are faceless (as claimed by the National Security Adviser (NSA)”. “We also call on the media to always be fair in their reporting of issues as that is the only way we can understand issues as they are and take appropriate measure to address them”.

“JNI calls on Muslims to be vigilant and always report to the authorities any case of injustice and maltreatment meted on any Muslim either by Christian extremist or bad elements among the security agents. Copies of the complaints should be sent to the state offices of JNI attached with a comprehensive report of the incidents”.
“JNI calls on government at all levels to pay serious attention to the development of education as no society can progress without giving education its priority,” the group added. Meanwhile, a suspected Boko Haram gunman was arrested yesterday by the people at the popular Baga market in Maiduguri, Borno State capital while on the trail of his target.

According to the JTF spokesman, Lt Colonel Hassan Ifijeh Mohammed, the lone gunman who stormed the market at about 1pm yesterday, was apprehended by the gallantry of the people in the market. “The JTF wishes to commend the effort and gallantry displayed by the people in Baga market this afternoon when they assisted the JTF in the arrest of a gunman who entered the market to kill innocent people,” a release signed by the JTF PRO said. The task force noted that the people in the market have displayed that security was a collective responsibility, adding that the sect members were not invisible as they now chose to operate in market and highly concentrated areas.

The JTF urged other members of the public to emulate the effort of the people at Baga market and team up with security forces to ensure a lasting peace in the state. The JTF spokesman also told Daily Sun that the security agencies in the state would collaborate to ensure the safety of the people at the market that exhibited such gallantry and patriotism.

In a related development, at 8.45p.m, yesterday there were gunshots at the M.I Wushishi Housing Estate along Eastern Byepass, Minna. The residents alerted the police but unknown to them the three policemen manning the gate of the estate were the ones shot dead by people suspected to be Boko Haram. Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Richard Ogwuche (ASP), confirmed the incident, saying the bodies have been taking to the hospital.

ABUJA — Nigeria’s first licenced Islamic bank, Jaiz Bank Plc, has commenced full operation of non-interest commercial banking in Nigeria from three branches in Abuja, Kaduna and Kano.

A staff of the bank in Abuja Office said most of the early customers were groups of business institutions and private individuals from different religious persuasions making enquiries as well as opening different accounts.

The officer in Operations Department said the service of the bank was opened to everyone that is interested in the non-interest products.

The introduction of Islamic banking is part of a drive by the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, to propel Nigeria’s economy and promote financial inclusion by introducing alternative products. The non-interest regime offers veritable incentives and attractive options for investors.

At its inaugural Annual General Meeting (AGM), Chairman of Jaiz Bank, Alhaji Umar Mutallab said: “The whole idea of the banking option is to bring more people into banking in Nigeria that provides banking without interest.”

Mutallab, who was Chairman of FirstBank, further added: “This kind of banking is for all religions because no religion wouldn’t want to help, especially funding critical project without using interest elements.

“Whether it is Christianity or Judaism, every community wants to borrow money without being bugged down with multi-layer interest structure.

“This banking option is a product with a difference. We hope our brothers from the divide will see it as an ethical bank which is not meant to promote a particular religion. It is for all Nigerians and not Muslims alone. Once you have a viable project proposal which is ethical, which doesn’t cater for such things as liquor, gambling etc, it becomes a halal (lawful) project and would be looked into by the bank.”

Islamic banking, also known as participant banking, is banking activity that is consistent with the principles of Islamic law and its practical application through the development of Islamic economics. The system prohibits the fixed or floating payment or acceptance of specific interest or fees like usury for loans of money.

Kwankwaso disburses N200m to Kano blasts victims

KANO – It was tears of joy Tuesday in Kano as the state government disbursed over N200 million to 185 identified victims of the recent bomb blasts in the city.

Out of the 185 victims identified so far, five were senior police officers whose families got N1.5 million each while the other 156 bereaved families got N1 million each.

In a serene ceremony held at the Government House shortly after the meetings of stakeholders, Governor, Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso revealed that the monies disbursed were voluntary donations realized from public-spirited individuals and organizations to help alleviate the plight of those who lost their loved ones during the January 19th carnage.

The breakdown of the  donor list shows that CBN gave the highest donation of N100 million, followed by Kano based industrialist, Alhaji Sayyu Dantata N50 million, while  Katsina and Jigawa state governments donated N20 million each.

Others that made the donor list include Kaduna, Bauchi and Kogi governments. ASD Motors a Kano based businessman, Alhaji Kabiru Sani Kwangila also made monetary contributions.

The visibly disturbed governor said the gesture was “a modest effort to enable the beneficiaries start up endeavours to cater for themselves since their bread winners were no more”, and charged them to make judicious use of the gesture. He however, pointed out that the best thing that could be done for the deceased was to remember them in prayers.

Responding on behalf of the beneficiaries, sons of late Mr. Gideon Itodo and Sufyan Muhammad thanked the state government and all those that supported them in both cash and kind, stressing that it is only God that would reward them.

It is too late to stop Iran and the whole World knows it. Israel is panicking, because their trump card in Middle Eastern relations will no last for long; Iran will soon have nukes.

Will Israel bomb Iran? ( 2)

That Israel would attack Iran has been the topic of debates and media speculations for many years now. And conventional wisdom seems to suggest that an attack would take place before the end of spring 2012. However, statements that are recently attributed to President Barack Obama, and to decision makers in Qatar, Turkey, and elsewhere in the Middle East, seem to indicate that an attack is not likely to happen anytime soon. In effect, the United States and her friends seem to prefer the ongoing unilateral and United Nations-backed sanctions and or diplomatic solution.

At this point, no one seems to know, or know with any degree of certainty, what Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would do. Frankly, what Netanyahu would do, and how the Iranians would respond, is what keeps many world leaders awake. The Israelis would not be satisfied with just attacking a couple of nuclear and military warehouses: a few other Iranian national security interests may also be attacked. The Iranians, on the other hand, are likely to respond in both conventional and non-conventional manner.

Recent statements attributed to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei — “I have no fear of saying that we will back and help any nation or group that wants to confront and fight against the Zionist regime (Israel)” — is an indication that Iran would broaden its theatre of operation against Israel and the United States. And just last week, the Reuters news agency quoted Obama as saying that, “Any kind of additional military activity inside the Gulf is disruptive and has a big effect on us. It could have a big effect on oil prices. We’ve still got troops in Afghanistan, which borders Iran. And so our preferred solution here is diplomatic.”

As sensible as Obama’s statement was, he seems to have understated what the likely cost to the US would be. Frankly, the cost would be exorbitant in economic, military, and political sense. This is a president who recently concluded a war in Iraq, and is winding down another in Afghanistan. It makes no sense for him to restart the war in Iraq and then postpone the end-date in Afghanistan. And of course, there are a dozen or so other places where Iran can (non-conventionally) bloody America’s nose.

The war efforts in Afghanistan and Iraq have already cost the US taxpayers billions and billions of dollars. And the number keeps climbing. Washington should spend its resources at home for homebuilding efforts — not abroad, starting and fighting a war and a country that has not encroached on its sovereignty or integrity. More importantly, thousands of patriotic young men and women have already given their lives and comfort to the defence of their country. How much more can and should America ask of these heroes? A decade of war is more than enough for the vast majority of Americans to tolerate.

For the Israelis, the cost would be far greater (unless of course they have the wherewithal to surgical strike and paralyse Iran). The Saudi Arabian and other governments in the region may not be a huge fan of Tehran. But what about the Arab states? In many of these countries, it matters not what the position of their governments may be. Many of these governments would quickly realise how much respect — not necessarily love — their people have for their brothers and sisters in Iran once the conflict begins. “The enemy of my enemy is my friend”, is especially instructive in this part of the world.

Second, majority of the Islamic world are likely to take sides with Tehran; so also would the majority of the developing countries. For most people in these parts of the world, they see and sense hypocrisy on the part of the US, and arrogance on the part of the Israelis. For more than five decades, America’s support for Israel has been unyielding even in situations where, the world believes, Israel has been the clear aggressor. And why, they wonder and continue to wonder, can Israel own nuclear weapons — but not Iran? In addition, many people in the developing world are terribly unhappy with how Israel has been treating the Palestinians.

Third, there is the issue of preemptive strike. No matter what the Israelis and their allies may think of the Iranian leadership, this is a country that has not invaded another country in its recent history. All they have done is to do what many other nations have done: obtain nuclear weapons. Why attack a country solely because she is pursuing what is within her national security ambition? After all, this is a sovereign nation. A preemptive strike, by the US or Israel, therefore, would be seen as illegal, unethical and unconscionable: a declaration of war on a peaceful country!

For many years now, anti-Semitism in the US, Asia, and the Middle East and elsewhere has been on the decline. One of the unintended consequences of an Israeli attack is that it would renew such negative and wholly unwholesome feeling. And finally, there is something about wars that the world is very familiar with: for the most part, those who start a war are never in a position to script how it should or would end. John G. Stoessinger, in “Why Nations Go To War,” reminded us that, “The emperors and generals who sent their men to war in August 1914 thought in terms of weeks, not months, let alone years.” This is one of the enduring ironies of wars.

And here is a final irony: if Tehran was an ally of the United States, no one would have opposed her quest for nuclear weapons. Indeed, it would have been in order for Tehran to arm itself whichever way it wanted. Today, Iran is simply paying the price for refusing to kowtow to anybody; for refusing to be a marionette; and for its singular pursuit of its sovereign goals. What’s wrong with that?

Boko Haram: S/Korea to assist Nigeria on counter terrorism

The republic of South Korea disclosed, Tuesday, that it was ready to share her experience in the handling of terrorism issues and challenges with Nigeria following increased Boko Haram attacks facing our nation.

Making the disclosure when he visited the minister of defence, South Korean ambassador to Nigeria, Jong Hyun Choi whose country has been having territorial issues with North Korea, noted that his country have one of the best counter terrorism forces and program in place saying South Korea was willing to share such expertise with Nigeria to help her checkmate terrorist threats.

Disclosing that his  country will be hosting a summit on security and terrorism  which is the second of its type  and that president Jonathan has been invited to the summit, the ambassador expressed hope that Nigeria will present a report on the activities of the sect to the world leaders.

Emphasizing his country’s readiness to partner Nigeria fight terrorism, Jong Hyun Choi,said Korea is prepared to share its experience in counter terrorism with Nigeria and that the military attache  to Nigeria will arrive Abuja next month to discuss modalities for exchange of military personnel for training.

Korean defence chiefs will also visit Nigeria in June this year to strengthen defence ties.
