OAU is Africa’s best
Posted by: CALEB ADEBAYO in Campus Life 2 days ago

Law students of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in Ile-Ife, Osun State, did Nigeria proud when they beat their counterparts from the University of Pretoria to win the Manfred Lachs Space Law Moot Competition, a regional contest held at the Pretoria High Court in South Africa. CALEB ADEBAYO (Graduating law student) reports.
•Varsity wins regional Law contest
You could cut through the tension in the Palace of Justice of the Pretoria High Court in South Africa that day with a knife. The courtroom was filled with people who came to watch legal fireworks by the opposing counsel. The outcome of the case was not to jail anyone; it was all part of the thrills and frills at the grand finale of the regional Manfred Lachs Space Law Moot Contest held in Pretoria.
Students of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in Ile-Ife, Osun State, thrilled members of the audience with their knowledge of the law when they met their counterparts from the University of Pretoria at the final  of the competition. OAU students won.
•The moot session
The Manfred Lachs Space Law Moot Competition is a yearly contest where law students worldwide show their litigation proficiency in proceedings based on international space law disputes. The contest imitates proceedings at the International Court of Justice.
This year’s edition was hosted by the South African Council for Space Affairs (SACSA), a space science regulatory body affiliated to South Africa’s Department of Trade and Industry, in collaboration with the Aerospace Industry Support Initiative.
The argument centred on dispute between two hypothetical countries – SPIDR and URA. It was to present issues relating to the response to a threat posed by the risk of collision of the earth with Near Earth Objects (NEOs). Counsel from each school addressed the utilisation of natural resources and liability for damages occasioned by the NEOs.
Six African universities, including OAU, University of Pretoria, Niger Delta University also from Nigeria, Makerere University in Uganda, University of Juba in South Sudan, and Mount Kenya University, participated in the competition.
The OAU counsel comprised John Odey, Peace Onashile and Toheeb Amuda, the team’s researcher. All of them are 400-Level students. Their lecturer, Dr Oduola Orifowomo, was their coach.
For three days, the teams argued their cases on the legality of outer space science. The OAU team beat the University of Pretoria and Niger Delta University at the preliminary stages.
Phethole Sekhula, a South African lawyer, Icho Kealetswe, an advocate of the High Court of Botswana and Christopher Okegbe, a solicitor from Nigeria presided over the final.
The grand finale was a show of forensic advocacy and oratorical skills as the counsel came up with their arguments. For every principle of law cited by the South African team, the OAU counsel had an answer.
It was be the fourth time OAU would be winning the regional contest. It won it in 2011, 2012 and 2014. The team also won the   Best Written Brief of Argument award.
The OAU students described the feat as “hard-won”, saying they faced many hurdles to win the contest. They praised their coach, whose expertise in space law, they said, helped them to come up with valid arguments.
Peace said: “The competition gave us the opportunity to engage our peers in other parts of Africa in an area of law which is seemingly unregulated. We matched our advocacy acuity with oratorical skills to win the contest.”
Asked about the team’s winning secret, John, the lead speaker, said: “From the onset, we were confronted with vague terms on the field of law that we were not familiar with. It was our task to break it down to understand the meaning of the terms to present our cases in Space Law. The team was conscious of the responsibility placed upon it and we moved faster to argue our points. The victory was not easy to come by; we fought hard and came out successful at the end.”
Dr Orifowomo hailed the students for the feat, saying his team proved to be formidable with its grasp of the fundamentals of space law as exhibited by the  members. He dedicated the victory to the moot and mock group of its OAU’s Faculty of Law, hailing its commitment to the knowledge of space law.
Dr Orifowomo also praised the OAU Vice-Chancellor, Prof Bamitale Omole, and the Dean of Law, Prof M.O. Adediran, for their support.
The OAU students will represent Africa in the international edition of the contest in Israel in October. It will be held during the 66th International Astronautical Congress.

Solidarity rally for Tinubu in north
Posted by: Abdulgafar Alabelewe in News 8 hours ago

A group, Patriotic Northern Coalition for Justice, Peace and Equity, will hold a solidarity rally in Kaduna to express gratitude to the national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.
The National Coordinator of the coalition, Alhaji Babangida Sule-Manchok Jnr, told newsmen in Kaduna yesterday that the rally will hold immediately after the fasting period.
He pledged that all its members across the 19 northern states in the country and beyond have been notified about it.
He said the coalition was working for the development of the north and will therefore support any individual or group that works towards the success of the region.
“As a group, our basic interest is to work for the progress of the country in general and the North in particular.
“So, we will support anyone who has worked or is still working for the betterment of the region or have the interest of our region at heart.
“By working tirelessly to ensure the victory of our son, brother, father and leader, President Muhammadu Buhari, Bola Tinubu has shown that he is a true friend of the region.
“Even though people have grown tired of former President Goodluck Jonathan, it would have been difficult to defeat him if not for the unique commitment of Tinubu towards ensuring that his South-West region voted overwhelmingly for Buhari.”
He went on: “So as part of our gratitude, we are organising this solidarity rally is to show him that we, the Northerners, are grateful to him for what he has done for us.
“It is not a political rally because electioneering campaigns have come and gone. ?
“This is a rally of gratitude and of a grateful people. In the rally, we shall also acknowledge all those who played one role or the other in the victory of Buhari.”
Asked if there were moves by some to work against Tinubu in APC as being reported, he said: “We won’t even allow anybody or group of persons from any part of the country to plan anything against Tinubu’s interest in APC.
“It is true that such moves are ongoing and we even know some of the people involved, but they won’t succeed.
“Selfish politicians can’t just sit down and begin to plot against someone we in the North are planning to appreciate for what he has done for us.”

BUHARI: HIGH HOPES AND THE OBVIOUS REALITY

By Adeleke Sodiq Olalekan (Soskid)
29th May, 2015. 06:00pm

General Muhammadu Buhari, a prominent customer to the Independent National Electoral Commission. He purchased the Presidential form four times. His first attempt was in 2003 when he slugged it out with then incumbent president, Olusegun Obasanjo. Fast forward to 2015, he became victorious at his 4th shot.

Buhari was not only demonized, his detractors also left no stone unturned to ensure that he was not favoured by the electorates. His detractors, majority of those who are afraid of being jailed should he emerge. They called him names and even dragged him and his white shirt to the mud. All these did not appeal to Nigerians. Hence, they were hell-bent on change. Buhari himself displayed doggedness and resilience throughout this period. He did not give a hoot to the hate campaigns. March 28, 2015 was the date. Nigerians devied the effect of the scorching sun and the heavy downpour to vote change. And for the first time in the annals of Nigeria, a sitting president lost his re-election bid. It was indeed victory for democracy. A clearheaded and unbiased analyst would have predicted just that or something close to that considering Jonathan's failure.

Elections are over and just like in every contest where we congratulate a side and console the other. Although the stubborn part of me will not console Jonathan but bemoan him for his poor handling of the country. I only console those who lost people as a result of Boko harm, the unemployed graduates whose future had been mortgaged and most importantly the unborn generations that will bear the brunt of Jonathan's debt.

With Buhari at the helms of affairs, I know hopes are high and expectations have skyrocketed. Even as it stands, those men who hitherto lack the requisite to impregnate their wives will be beaming with hope of being called fathers now that the Daura born General will be steering the wheel of Nigeria. But then those who are not oblivion of the damage done by the Peoples Democratic Party in the last 16 years will agree with me that 4 years will be too small for us to recover our lost glory. But we can be rest assured that sanity will be restored just as we all know Buhari has zero-tolerance fo corruption. Stealing is now corruption, cheating will no longer be seen as the only condition for passing examination, bribery will cease to be the ladder to the top and above all, Nigeria will be great again.

Nigeria's debt as of March 31, 2015 is N12.06tn as reported by May 11, 2015 edition of The Punch Newspaper. With a barrel of Crude oil selling for as low as $50. It is no news that some state governments still find it difficult to pay workers salary with Unemployment at its peak. Power generation is below 2000megawatts. Boko haram killing and kidnapping. These and many Problems Buhari led government has inherited. It is nonsensical of anybody to think that Buhari has a magic wand to end all these problems bedeviling the country within few days.

I have watched with enthusiasm, views expressed by Nigerians after the emergence of Buhari at the poll. While some believe it is business as usual, some have expressed optimism. In as much as I share from this optimism, there is the need for us to see even when we cry. Just like Buhari himself has emphasised after the election that Nigerians should not expect miracle but it will not be business as usual for the cabals that left the country in this miserable condition.

To Nigerians, I say congratulation. Asiko Buhari atuwa lara o.

PoliticsWhich Of Them Should I Support? by Soskid(op): 12:34pm On May 14, 2015
Confused as to which to support. Defending what is right or appealing to pity. I entered a cab which was to convey myself and 3 other passengers from Sagamu to Ogijo. After about 5 mins of movement, we encountered VIO officials who manned the road road like soldiers waiting to execute world war 3. The driver, knowing fully well that he was without the necessary documents to ply the road decided to escape the VIO officials by taking another route. The driver drove in a manner that i tought i was actually in for the audition of 'Fast and Furious' that i almost mistaken our driver for Paul Walker, the leading act in the aforementioned movie. The VIO officials gave him a hot chase and he was arrested. He pleaded that he got the cab on instalment just yesterday and that his case should be addressed with leniency. His pleads fell on the deaf ears of the VIO officials. My question now is, which of them should i support. Is it the VIO officials who have arrested a cab driver without d necessary documents and even tried to evade arrest or a cab driver who is just a victim of the economic situation of Nigeriahuh?
