According to a data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), prices of some petroleum products, especially Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) popularly called diesel, and household kerosene (HHK or kerosene) have increased by over 50.44 per cent and 39.50 per cent in the last one year. Although the agency’s data showed a slight decrease in the prices on the month-on-month basis by 5.94 per cent and 11.59 per cent respectively, the commodities are still largely beyond the reach of the average income earners. Giving an analysis of diesel and kerosene prices for March, the NBS said the average price paid by consumers for diesel decreased by 5.94 percent month-on-month from N249.38 in February to N234.55/litre in March 2017. In a year-on-year price analyses, NBS said diesel and kerosene increased by 50.44 and 39.50 percent respectively. Generally, prices of the petroleum products have remained high due to the high cost of foreign exchange, which made many marketers abandon importation and leaving the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) almost the sole importer of products. It stated that the average price per liter paid by consumers for kerosene decreased by 11.59 percent month-on-month from N352.42 recorded in February to N311.56 in March 2017. National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) listed states with the highest average price per liter of kerosene to include Taraba N347.22; Plateau N340.48; and Cross River N399.71. While states with the lowest average price per liter of kerosene were Gombe N273.81; Zamfara N271.57; and Oyo N267.54. Similarly, the average price per gallon paid by consumers for kerosene decreased by 14.15 percent month-on-month from N1,366 in February to N1,172.78 in March 2017. With regard to Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) also known as petrol, NBS said the average price paid by consumers for petrol decreased by -0.3 per cent month-on-month to N149.4 in March from N149.8 a month earlier. According to the Bureau, states with the highest average price of petrol were Yobe, N161.7; Bayelsa, N161.3 and Enugu, N154.5, while states with the lowest average price petrol were Oyo, N145.7, Osun, Kwara, Kano, Gombe, Ekiti, Delta, and Abuja, N145, and Ogun N144.9. failure is part of life, and most certainly part of business. We don’t often acknowledge it, but failure is also a fundamental element of our success. Our instinct is to be ashamed of failure, maybe because we don’t like how it makes us feel–humiliated like we’ve done something wrong. Having your business fail can feel like the end of the world, but you’ll be relieved to know that Earth keeps spinning, and life goes on. Failure, like everything else to you as an entrepreneur, represents an opportunity if used wisely. Here are tips you can use to turn your business failure into accomplishments: 1. Take a break Burnout is real, and if you’re coming off the failure of a business that you threw your life into, you’re probably really sick and tired of feeling down about it. Take a vacation from this feeling. For some, that might mean taking a trip to relaxation center or spending time at home with the family. For others, it might mean sitting around watching movies for a while, or even accepting a more low-stakes position at another business. The point is to enjoy some time when you’re not shouldering the burden of building a company yourself for a while. Rest and refreshment are the only cure for burnout. 2. Own your mistakes It s important to openly acknowledge any mistakes on your part. Otherwise, you can never redeem them. There’s no sense trying to hide the fact that your business failed or that you played a big role in that failure. Puffing your chest out and blaming others or your circumstances is a sad little act that can’t last. You don’t have to apologize for the choices you made, but it’s important to recognize them and confront them in order to make better choices next time. People respect leaders who can admit their own errors. 3. Maintain your confidence Failure, particularly the kind that can leave you in financial ruins, will shake anybody’s confidence. That’s human. But understand that confidence and optimism are central to becoming a successful entrepreneur. Steve Jobs was fired from the company he co-founded for his mistakes. It’s hard to fail bigger than that. But failure didn’t cause Jobs to lose his faith in or his enthusiasm for his ideas. You don’t have to be a genius to follow his example. Remind yourself that you have strengths to rely on and weaknesses to improve on. Everybody falls down from time to time. That doesn’t mean you can’t still pick yourself up and run a marathon. 4. Learn from your failure The only way to fail at failing is to learn nothing from the experience. Odds are high that if your startup goes down, you’ll find yourself analyzing every little mistake you made and every little thing you could’ve done better. This can be a good thing, as long as you aren’t beating yourself up needlessly. Trial and error is one of the most effective ways to improve our skills and knowledge, even though it isn’t always pretty. Don’t throw away or dismiss your failed experiment: Learn from it. Write down and remember everything you know you could have done better. It will motivate you to be a better entrepreneur the next time you give it another try. 5. Enjoy a new beginning Fear of starting over can be crippling for some entrepreneurs. After working so hard to build a successful business from scratch, finding yourself back at square one can seem dispiriting, to say the least. Often, though, it isn’t. The thrill of setting out on a new adventure is what drives many to become entrepreneurs in the first place. So, try not to think of starting over as a setback. A good entrepreneur sees it as an opportunity. Everything you loved about building a new business – the excitement, the anticipation, even the stress, is all brand-new again. Let yourself enjoy it, confident that you’re a smarter, tougher entrepreneur today than you were the last time you started to build something. What steps do you take when you encounter failure in your business? More Articles at: dailydigest.ng/ |

Technology is an innovation no one or organization can ignore and it has come to stay. Advancement in technology is currently affecting so many businesses both small, local shops and as well as the giant retail stores. Most of these categories of businesses are affected because they have failed to follow or meet up with the current trend in Technology. Retailers that have not been able to keep up with the pace of technology have found themselves running out of business. Technology and retail operations have been going hand in hand for years. Retailers winning today are those who have created an avenue to accommodate the advancement in technology and imputing it into their operation and logistics. Fifteen years ago, the average consumer was shopping from local small stores in communities but now because of the advancement in technology, some of this retail stores began to lose out of the competition. First to arrive were the departmental stores, then came the mega shopping centers in Suburbs, where everything could be located within minutes under one roof, causing smaller stores to bow out to giant competitors. Advancement in technology got better over the years; a lot of strategies got introduced to the market like the power of distribution, the impact of advertising and branding, the use of social media platforms. Consumers now could buy product items and services from the comfort of their home and avoid the daily traffic that occurs mostly in the cities, putting convenience as part of their shopping experience. One major area technology is transforming the retail industry is the supply chain. The supply chain of a company is the most important part of any business. It is not restricted to the size of the organization because every business must have a supply chain which ranges in the following sequence from suppliers, purchasing, production, distribution, and the customers. However, the supply chain is faced with one major challenge, which is a weak link in the chain. If one of the departments in the chain is weak it can affect the consumer experience and ultimately affect the business. Since the inception of the internet, emails and other technologies the expectations of the consumer have grown correspondingly. Today, Companies are increasing globally and getting more innovative and coupled with competition growing from all corners. Almost everything today can be bought online and can be delivered to consumers. A case study of this is Supermart Nigeria, an online grocery supermarket in Lagos, Nigeria. Supermart.ng has been able to make use of technology in their supply chain effectively. They have IT specialists who work on the user experience of the site. The Company leverages mostly on its online presence to complete 80% of its supply chain, from website ordering of goods to operations where all arrangement of delivery is being concluded then to home delivery of goods. Consumers want cheap and fast delivery especially with the present recession in the country. Supermart.ng leverages on this by offering consumers discount on first orders, which is an advantage they have to physical stores. - See more at https://www.supermart.ng/blog/the-innovative-impact-of-technology-on-retail-supply-chain.html |
ave you ever come across a situation where you go Excuse me! This is not my task, I am not trained to do this, This is not my specialty, My head hurts and I have not started the task. We get this kind of tasks all the time, to create an excel sheet which we never worked on, to create a power point deck when we do not have any experience on a power point. Times like this can be really depressing, but here are top ways to handle whatever comes your way, and stay winning i the workplace: 1. Dive in When you’re tasked with something new and difficult, your first thought is likely, “I can’t do this.” But, to succeed, you must take off that negative outlook and believe in yourself, that you can do any task. Be it a Powerpoint, spreadsheet, Photoshop, HTML or anything your work demands you to do, you can only finish the task when you put efforts. When you get a difficult task, do not over think and wait for some miracle to happen. The fact remains that you have to do it, no one will do it for you and you have to dive right in. 2. Google it You may not have all the tools or knowledge you need to actually complete the project. But that’s okay, you just have to track them down. If it”s a task that you don’t have any idea of, remember that Google is your friend. Google it and see what resource you have online which will help you do the task. There are a lot o online tutorials for free. Slide share is a great place for power point decks. You can also try YouTube, it’ll actually give you step by step procedures on how to do it. 3. Get help It’s not a familiar task and you really don’t want to mess it up and tell the world that you don’t know it. So, don’t just sit with the task in hand and waste time. Getting it done is as easy as leaving your desk and finding a knowledgeable colleague and asking if he/she can help you with the task or if you can pick her brain to learn how to do it yourself. Once you take the initiative, you’ll typically find that people are willing to help and resources are available. And leaning on that knowledge is a much better alternative than trying to do it all on your own. 4. Assess yourself After you’ve made the first attempt, you have an even more valuable tool available to you: feedback from your boss and colleagues. Once you’ve completed a task, your teammates will be able to take a look at your progress so far and may be able to pinpoint where you went wrong or where you could approach the project or task differently. Even if you stump the rest of the team and have to approach your boss with your less-than-stellar attempt, bringing something to your boss will show more initiative and drive to succeed than if you’d simply protested the project from the beginning. What do you do when you get a task that you have never worked on? Source: http://www.dailydigest.ng/how-to-tackle-task-youve-never-done-before/ |
The seemingly endless questions, and all the poking and prodding that comes with having to endure a physical checkup is no fun at all. We make excuses for putting off, claiming we don’t have time, and we wonder why we should even go at all if there’s nothing wrong. But there are some good reasons why you should visit your doctor: 1. You’ll be ahead of your game Although it’s not fun, especially when you feel fine, but going for regular medical checkups is a fundamental part of good health. One of the primary reasons to see your doctor regularly is because the focus of general medicine is on prevention. Regular medical checkups help to prevent sicknesses and diseases from occurring. Just because we can’t feel something happening doesn’t mean we aren’t at risk. For example, when we have regular tests done to check our weight, as well as our cholesterol and blood pressure levels, our doctors will be able to identify the silent conditions and developing patterns that can have a detrimental impact on our health. The earlier those conditions are caught, the better chance they can be treated and reversed without any long term damage. 2. You’ll have a detailed medical history Even if you feel strong and fit, if you don’t have a primary care physician, there is no one keeping tabs on your health. By building a detailed medical history, it will be much easier for your doctor to diagnose and treat future conditions, especially as you age. Additionally, when health records are available, it makes it easier when you run into any health emergency. In the event of a car accident or catastrophic injury, the attending physicians will know about your allergies or preexisting conditions, and they’ll be able to give you the best care possible. 3. You’ll be establishing a trusting doctor-patient relationship One of the most sacred parts of medicine is the doctor-patient relationship. This relationship is not built overnight, but requires multiple interactions to allow the doctor really understand the patient. This is particularly important because it can affect the treatment that is prescribed. For example, if a doctor knows that a given patient does not desire to have surgery, then he or she can work to find effective alternative therapies. Similarly, if a patient despises medications, physicians can seek out additional options. Another major benefit of being an established patient is that most practices have 24/7 call lines; so when it’s Sunday night with no one around and nothing open, you can put a call through to your doctor, to request help. 4. You’ll be cutting cost For many, the thought of a large hospital bill is enough to put off scheduling a checkup. But checkups could actually save you plenty of money in the long run as they help to minimize the risk of potential health issues that will lower the risks for surgery or more extensive medical care in the future. Many serious medical conditions can be diagnosed during regular medical check-ups and then treated and managed at a much lower cost than leaving a condition undiagnosed until it becomes more severe and then costs a fortune to treat. So, all-in-all, regular medical check-ups make sense, not only from a health point of view but from a financial one as well. How often do you go for medical checkups? She always wants some money to spend on something, all the time. He makes big bucks alright, but he’s now complaining. She shops at The Palms in Lekki every few days. He just can’t splurge on that iPad he’s always wanted – because they can’t both be spendthrifts. And now, they’re fighting. Sound familiar? Unfortunately, money is a common cause of relationship and marriage troubles. But if you find yourself constantly fighting, it’s time to do something about it before the disagreement goes too far. The good news is, love and money can get along! The first step to making it work is understanding what’s really behind your financial feuds. Have an understanding Share your financial dream and why it’s important that you keep something aside for the rainy day. Are you planning for a new house in Banana Islands or even Agbara? A vacation in Obudu Cattle Ranch? To start a business ? Spark conversations by asking: “If you had N5000,000, what would you do? No judgment.” By learning about each other’s dreams, you’ll better understand your day-to-day financial decisions. Well, because being sneaky about money doesn’t help your relationship. And it’s a downward spiral—once unhealthy money habits become part of your routine, they’re difficult to change. So be honest with your partner about money. Meet somewhere in the Middle When it comes to money, some partners don’t see eye-to-eye on anything: she splurges on her wardrobe, while he hasn’t bought new jeans since 2003. And now, she must also have the new iPhone 7. With so many different priorities, it’s important to pick your battles. Give up the small fights, and you might actually get a little more leeway in the areas that really matter to you. This way, you can avoid many of those money fights and focus the financial conversation on the big purchases and how they relate to your budget. Swap and share bills Want to really understand where your partner is coming from—or vice versa? If you always pay the bills or track the budget, let her/him take over paying the bills for a month. There’s no better way to learn about managing finances than by getting right in there. In the event that bargaining between yourselves feels too charged, find neutral ground. The more you share your day-to-day financial management, the more connected you’ll be and the fewer surprises you’ll face. If you keep communicating and compromising where need be, you and your sweetheart will be well on the right track to financial bliss. Given that the vast majority of Nigerian businesses are self-funded, it makes sense that many entrepreneurs choose to start their new ventures while holding down a traditional corporate gig. Side gigs or projects allow you have a taste entrepreneurship, but at the same time, despite the commitment, and adrenaline that accompanies it, may not be right for now. Having a side gig requires that you answer these pertinent questions. Do I really believe in the business? You spend so much time and effort trying to get your business off the ground, but if you don’t really believe in it, you’re not going to be driven to make it successful. It’s much more fulfilling when the business’s accomplishments are also your accomplishments. You can get a better feel on what your business stands for by establishing your core beliefs and values. Ask yourself thoughtful questions about the goals and objectives you hope to achieve. Am I comfortable making decisions on my own? In an entrepreneurial environment that’s continuously changing, there is usually not a ton of formal structure when it comes to decision-making. So, when you’re faced with a decision that impacts your business there’s not a lot of time for consultation. In other words, you’ll likely be getting the job done independently. Are you confident in making decisions and moving quickly? This could be your chance to give your leadership skills a chance to shine, but are you ready? Am I a risk taker? Making the leap from a large, well-established corporate world to a much smaller, relatively unknown startup can be scary. Leaving a “sure thing” to start a business that may or may not survive past the start-up phase takes a certain amount of confidence. Asking yourself questions about business goals and priorities would convince you if a risk is worth taking. By being forthright in your answer would offer insight as to what direction to head. So, how did you do? If you answered ‘yes’ to at least two of the above questions, you can be confident you have what it takes to survive and thrive in a startup. But if you answered ‘no’, then it’s better to rethink that startup decision Source : http://www.dailydigest.ng/starting-side-gig-not-best-decision/ |
The naira weakened to 410 per dollar against the United States currency on Tuesday, down from 405/dollar recorded on Monday. This was despite the Central Bank of Nigeria’s attempt to improve dollar supply and prop up the local unit. The CBN had on Monday auctioned $100m in forwards to be settled between one week and 30 days’ time, as against 60-day contracts it had written previously, shortening the settlement period on forwarding contracts to inject liquidity. On the official market, the naira closed at 306.10/dollar on Tuesday. Source : http://www.dailydigest.ng/naira-plummets-410dollar/ |
You’ve been using Google for years now, probably for over a decade. In those years, there are times when you’d have wondered why the results you were expecting did not pop up. Have you been doing your search rightly? When it comes to Google search, there are smart tricks you can use to get the best results. Here are a few of them: 1. Use quotes to search for an exact phrase This is one of the most vital search tips, especially useful if you’re trying to find results containing a specific a phrase. If searching for a specific quote, use quotation marks (“”). Google will find out the results containing accurate set of words without any change in order. You can also use a plus sign (+) immediately before the word without any space, it will provide you the same result as from quotation marks. 2. Use the minus sign to narrow the search e return something totally unexpected? Terms with multiple meanings can return a lot of unwanted results. To eliminate results with certain words that aren’t of interest to you, figure out what terms you’re not interested in (e.g. jaguar -car) and re-run the search. 3. Don’t use common words and phrases Common terms like a and the are called stop words and are usually ignored. Punctuation is also typically ignored. But there are exceptions. Common words and punctuation marks should be used when searching for a specific phrase inside quotes. There are cases when common words like the are significant. For instance, Raven and The Raven return entirely different results. 4. Use unique specific term It is simply amazing how many Web pages are returned when performing a search. You might guess that the terms hangout spots are relatively specialized. A Google search of those terms returned 827,000 results! On the other hand, the terms hangout spots in Lagos returned just 141,000. To reduce the number of pages returned, use unique terms that are specific to the subject you are researching. 5. Search specific websites There are times when you want to see only search results from a website. To make this easier, think of the “site:” function as a Google search that searches only a particular website. If you want to see every time DailyDigest.ng mentioned on Google, use the search “Google site:DailyDigest.ng”. If you want to search information from a specific website then use the keyword with the name of your desired website and separate them with double colon. For example, [lifestyle: DailyDigest.ng]. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has opened another foreign exchange window for small and medium scale businesses. The bank’s special intervention was necessitated by its findings that a large number of SMEs were being crowded out of the Forex space by large firms. According to the CBN website, SMEs are enterprises that have asset base (excluding land) of between N5 million and N500 million and a labor force of between 11 and 300. So, if you are an entrepreneur who falls into this category, here’s all you need to know about the CBN’s Forex window for small businesses: 1. CBN would allocate $20,000 per business per quarter to help small and medium enterprises (SMEs) import “eligible finished and semi-finished items” needed for their businesses. 2. The amount per SME customer per quarter can be affected by telegraphic transfer subject to completion of Form ‘M’ supported with proforma Invoice and the importer’s Bank Verification Number (BVN). 3. All processing banks are to ensure that the importers submit relevant shipping documents not later than 60 days from the date of the transfer. 4. CBN has begun the massive sale of foreign exchange in different sectors of the Forex market this week. 5. Just this Monday, CBN intervened by offering the sum of $100 million to authorized dealers at the Forex auction in the interbank wholesale window. 6. The Bank also sold $10,000 each to BDCs to meet the needs of low-end users in the country. 7. Dealers in the wholesale segment have started having value for their respective bids since Tuesday, April 11, 2017. 8. CBN may continue its special intervention in the market with the sale of more dollars to BDCs and in both the retail and wholesale windows in the course of the week. With this information, what are you waiting for?! Head for your bank now! Source : http://www.dailydigest.ng/cbns-fx-window-small-businesses/ |
