Business / Trending: Naira Hits 400/dollar by Speeddial(m): 8:29pm On Aug 05, 2016
The naira plunged to 400 against the dollar
at the parallel market on Thursday as
shortage of foreign exchange continued to
have negative effects on economic activities
in the country.

The local currency had closed at 390
against the greenback on Wednesday.
The shortage of forex at the interbank and
the black market has continued to weigh on
the value of the naira.

After closing at around 378 against the
dollar for most part of last week, the naira
dropped to 380 on Friday before falling to
382 on Monday.

The currency closed at 315.06 to the United
States dollar at the interbank market on
Thursday.

Economic and financial analysts have linked
the wide depreciation in the value of the
naira against the dollar at the parallel
market to huge demand for forex by
holidaymakers seeking to travel abroad.

However, some experts said the huge
demand for forex at the parallel market was
beyond the normal summer rush.

They linked the development to the
activities of speculators and significant
demand by manufacturers and importers
whose demand was not being met at the
interbank market.

Currency analyst at Ecobank Nigeria, Mr.
Kunle Ezun, said, “The issue still has to do
with inadequate forex supply. As far as you
continue to have some 41 items banned
from the interbank market, importers and
manufacturers of those items will continue
to seek for forex at the parallel market.

“This is part of the reason you are having
pressure at the parallel market.”
According to Ezun, the global plunge in oil
prices has affected the capacity of the
Central Bank of Nigeria to defend the naira.

“If the price of oil should go up, more forex
will come in and you will see that things will
change,” he added.

A Professor of Economics at the Olabisi
Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, Sherrifdeen
Tella, said the huge demand for dollars
could be due to the activities of genuine
manufacturers and importers seeking forex
for production and business purposes, or
corrupt people who had stolen state funds.

Tella said, “The naira is falling at the parallel
market because there is scarcity at the
interbank market. This fall could be due to
the activities of genuine manufacturers or
some people you cannot identify. These are
people who have stored naira somewhere
and are seeking to convert them to dollars.

They use every chance they have to buy
dollars. What the CBN may need to do is to
neutralise that money by changing the
colour of the N500 and N1,000 notes.

“If the naira keeps falling at the parallel
market, then we should prepare for further
increase in the prices of goods and services.
And this will continue to give us more
trouble as a nation.”

The National President, Association of
Bureau De Change Operators, Alhaji Aminu
Gwadabe, said the fall in the naira value
could be linked to the activities of
speculators.

He said the demand was spurious, saying it
was not coming from genuine sources.

“The demand is spurious; the challenge is
that there is no liquidity in the market. If
you ask any of the parallel market operators
calling N400 per dollar to bring the dollar
that you want to buy it, they don’t have,”
Ezun said.

The Chief Executive Officer, Cowry Asset
Management Limited, Mr. Johnson Chukwu,
said that if the naira continued to fall at the
parallel market, the country would need to
brace for higher rate of inflation and further
contraction in economic growth.

It was learnt on Thursday that the Deposit
Money Banks had started selling forex to the
Bureau De Change operators in line with the
CBN directive.

Banking sources confirmed that the sale
begun on Thursday.

The ABCON president, Gwadabe, also
confirmed the development.

“The banks started selling to us today, we
will be debited tomorrow and then receive
the forex. We thank the CBN and the banks.

This move will help to close the gap
between the exchange rates at the parallel
market and interbank market,” he stated.

Politics / The Stupidity Of The Ordinary Nigerian. Almost every Nigerian is a coward. by Speeddial(m): 5:11pm On Aug 04, 2016
I have not seen any country in the world that have its citizens behave the way Nigerians do. Nigerians are very optimistic that change will suddenly come from some where some day. They never plan for it, they just sit down and help the leaders loot the country.

A typical example of where its done is here on Nairaland. On a daily base we come here to criticise each other. Cause unnecessary fight between our selves, clap and support a defaulting leader because he is from your tribe. The earlier we create our own assembly here and begin to utilise the forum to air our views and thoughts on how to reach the government, and help her or probably bring her to correction, or help suggest to it a way forward the better for us.

If we think that Nigeria will be good one day just like that, I must say you are sleeping on a moving bicycle, hell no. We are all humans, the only thing that can stop an individual whom you voted into power from looting you is if he or she has the fear of God, and if the person really has the knowledge on how to spend the resources he has to his disposal well.

The crowd that come here daily to castigate and fight each other due to difference in tribe is much, if we decide to put heads together to fashion out a solution or carry out a revolution we can go places, the earlier we come to our senses the better for us. Nigeria is ours.

Politics / OPC Members To Transform To Snakes And Lions To Fight Militants In Ogun by Speeddial(m): 9:24am On Aug 03, 2016
NO fewer than 5,000 members of the Reformed Oodua People’s Congress on Tuesday stormed the Imushin community in Ogun State, to confront suspected militants in the area.

Our correspondent gathered that the members of the ethnic militia, who arrived in more than 100 buses and cars, came from Lagos and Ogun states.

They reportedly moved around some of the areas and visited the Olumushin of Imushin, Oba Taiwo Bamgbose, who received them outside his palace.

A palace source said the OPC members, which did not carry any weapon, were only armed with charms, which they claimed had powers.

He said, “They were over 5,000 and they filled the whole community. They carried all kinds of charms and a few of them even carried placards, protesting militant’s invasion of the South-West.

“They said they were ready to enter into the creeks to face the militants and kill them and all they needed was the permission of the traditional ruler. Some of them said they could transform to snakes and lions, once they get into the creeks.

“The traditional ruler, after thanking them for their concern, asked them to leave because he had not received authority from higher authorities to allow them fight the militants. He urged them to get approval from the government before doing anything in the community.”

The President of the OPC group, Dare Adesope, who confirmed the visit to our correspondent on the telephone, said their presence in the community was to assure residents of their security.

Adesope said his group was incensed by the killings and kidnap of residents without any response from the government.

He explained that the members of the group had issued a 14-day ultimatum to the militants to vacate the South West, adding that the ultimatum expired on Monday.

He said, “On July 19, we issued a 14-day ultimatum to the militants to end their activities in the South-West and we said if they didn’t leave, we will challenge them and defend our people. That ultimatum elapsed yesterday (Monday).

“The recent military action against the militants might have been influenced by our ultimatum, because prior to the release, the Federal Government didn’t do anything.

“We decided to go to the community in 107 buses and some cars, to show that the Reformed OPC is still on the ground and our aim is to protect the lives and property of everyone that is residing within our area of jurisdiction.

“Our silence all this while is not an act of cowardice. It is because we believe in dialogue before action. It is wrong for anyone to be kidnapping, raping, robbing and killing our people.

We say no to that and we don’t want anything like that again in Yoruba land. After today, if we hear anything again in the area, we know what to do.”

The traditional ruler, who also confirmed the visit on the telephone, appealed to the fleeing members of the 18 villages in the community to return home.

He thanked the Federal Government, the Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun, and the members of the Joint Task Force for the efforts aimed at restoring sanity to the area.

Politics / Nigeria’s Oil Firms Face Zero Revenue, Post Losses by Speeddial(m): 9:10am On Aug 03, 2016
The revenue woes facing local oil companies
following the sharp drop in global oil prices
have been worsened by the recent upsurge
in militant attacks in the Niger Delta,
industry players have said.

They stated this at the 40th Nigeria Annual
International Conference and Exhibition of
the Society of Petroleum Engineers in Lagos.
The Managing Director, Seplat Petroleum
Development Company Plc, Mr. Austin
Avuru, said about 70 per cent of the
nation’s production from the traditional
terrain of onshore and shallow water had
been locked in.

“A year ago, we were battling with zero
production and zero revenue for upwards of
five, six months. Some of us no longer
check the oil price, it has become irrelevant.
Oil price is only relevant when you
produce,” Avuru stated.

He added that the oil and gas industry was
undergoing a major transformation a couple
of years ago aimed at moving it away from
just being a primary revenue earner for the
Federal Government to becoming an
enabler of economic development.

He said, “We have said that this industry will
move away from domestic consumption of
less than 300 million standard cubic feet of
gas per day to three billion scfpd, and in the
process, energising companies like Dangote
so that we can become a net exporter of
cement and fertiliser; in the process,
delivering 15 gigawatts of electricity and all
its multiplier effects.

“That is the journey that the industry
started a few years ago. That journey,
unfortunately, today is being interrupted by
some forces. The crisis in the Niger Delta
has taken a turn that must worry all of us
because when we don’t produce, our
companies are destroyed, jobs are
destroyed and the economy is destroyed.”

Recalling that last week, Seplat released its
financial results, Avuru said, “For the first
time ever since we started this business six
years ago, we made a half-year loss from
bountiful profits.”
Oando Plc, which is another major
indigenous player, said on Tuesday that it
made a loss after tax of N27bn in the first
half of this year, a drop from the N35bn loss
it recorded a year ago.

The Chairman of SPE Nigeria Council, Mr.
George Kalu, said the conference theme,
‘Transparency in the oil and gas business:
An imperative for energy security and
stability’, was timely given that oil prices
were hovering around $43 per barrel in
recent times with significant challenges to
the Nigerian oil and gas business
environment.

He said, “These challenges including
funding constraints rising from cash call
arrears, exchange rate differential in a
cyclical oil price regime, high operational
costs due to long contracting cycle time,
and severely delayed payment to vendors,
as well as high cost of borrowing are
affecting the much-anticipated boom in the
industry.

“One would think that with the low oil price,
improved revenue will come for gas sales.
However, the lack of gas gathering and
supply infrastructure is hampering the
country’s ability to maximise the benefits of
the sale of gas in the domestic market,
which is currently more attractive than the
international market.”

Kalu said the recent challenge of vandalism
and outright destruction of oil and gas
facilities had further curtailed Nigeria’s oil
and gas production, power generation
ability, reduced the flow of revenue,
escalated the cost of environmental
remediation and provision of secondary
health care facilities, as well as increased
security surveillance and facility
replacement costs.

He added that the delay in the passage of
the Petroleum Industry Bill had constrained
further investment in the sector to the
extent that exploration activities were at
their lowest ebb.

Politics / Nigerians Reject Life Pension For Ex-governors, Legislators — Poll by Speeddial(m): 12:44pm On Aug 02, 2016
The issue of payment of life pension to governors, their deputies, National Assembly and House of Assembly members has been on the front burner of public discourse in recent times.

In an opinion poll conducted by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) nationwide, the respondents said that the ongoing payment of
pensions to former governors should be discontinued.

They noted that the former governors, who were now senators of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, were by implication, earning double pay.

In Abuja, 17 of the 18 respondents, who returned their questionnaires, opposed life
pension for leaders of the legislative houses, while one person supported it.

Also, 16 persons opposed governors enjoying life pension, while only two persons supported
it.

In South-West zone, 442 of the 600 respondents, representing 73.6 per cent, rejected life pension to governors, while 148 people or 24.6 per cent, were in support.
Similarly, 435 respondents, representing 72.5 per cent, opposed life pension for leaders of
the National Assembly, while 149 people or 24.8 per cent, supported it.

In the North-East, another 600 people responded in the six states.

Four hundred and ninety four, of the sampled
population, representing 82.33 per cent,
opposed the payment of life pension to
legislators, while 58 people or 9.67 per cent
supported it.

The survey showed that 426 people or 71 per
cent, also rejected life pension to governors,
132 people or 22 per cent supported it, while
42 people or 7 per cent, were undecided.

In South-East, where 100 questionnaires were
administered in the five states, 83 respondents voted against pension for legislators while only 12 voted in favour with five respondents undecided.

Similarly, in the North-West, 273 questionnaires were administered in Kano, Kebbi and Sokoto with 126 people or 46.15 per cent rejecting life pension to governors, while 105 people or 38.5 per cent, supported it.

The respondents in the zone also unanimously
rejected payment of life pension to leaders of
the legislative houses.

Also, all the respondents in North-Central voted against life pension to both former governors and the leaders of the legislative houses. South-South respondents opposed the
payment of life pension to ex-governors and
legislators.

They argued that they were well paid while in
office and in addition, went with handsome
severance packages.

In the case of legislators, they said:“Their four-
year tenure is too small to attract life pension
and moreover, legislators, especially in Nigeria,
should be part-time work.” (NAN)

Politics / Buhari’s Drones Won’t Stop Us – Niger Delta Avengers by Speeddial(m): 7:11pm On Jul 29, 2016
Militant group, the Niger Delta Avengers, has said it is aware of a plan by the Federal Government to purchase drones as part of efforts to stop it from attacking oil facilities in the Niger Delta.

The group, however, warned that the plan would be a waste of time as it won’t stop them from carrying on with their activities.

“Mr. President, you can purchase all the drones in Europe and Untied State. It won’t stop the Niger Delta Avengers from bringing the country’s economy to zero,” it said in a statement by its spokesperson, Mudoch Agbinibo.

“The worse you can do is to kill poor innocent people which the military is good at but know the Nigeria Economy will suffer.”

The group said it had gathered intelligence, which showed that claims by the Federal Government that it was willing to hold talks with militants in the oil-rich region were deceptive.

“The said peace talk or dialogue by the Federal Government is a delay tactic employed by the Federal Government, to enable their purchased drones that are said to arrive latest (at the) end of August from the United State,” it said.

Bragging that the drones won’t stop it, the Niger Delta Avengers threatened to stop the export of crude from the Niger Delta. “Just intensify the oil exploration in the North East; as for the ones in the Niger Delta forget about it because the Nigeria government won’t export a drop from our land,” it said.

It added that although its finding showed that the government was not serious about having a dialogue with militants, the situation is made to look like the group is the one against talks.

Politics / Buhari Urges Clerics To Calm Nigerians. by Speeddial(m): 7:41am On Jul 29, 2016
Amidst growing complaints on the various
challenges facing Nigerians, President
Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday appealed
to Muslim clerics to help his administration
calm Nigerians down.

He said his government was aware of the
challenges facing the average citizen, hence
the need for the clerics to carry the message of hope to the people that things would soon improve.

According to a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, the President made the appeal during a meeting he had with the Council of Abuja Imams at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

“Keep calming the people. The leadership at
various levels is trying to solve the problems
of poverty, unemployment and insecurity
bedeviling the country,” Buhari requested
religious leaders throughout the country.

Earlier, the Chairman of Abuja Council of
Imams, Dr. Tajudeen Adigun, was said to
have, on behalf of the delegation, commended the efforts of the Buhari administration in the war against corruption and terrorism.
