Phones / MTN Lays Blame On NCC As They Increase Data Tariffs by Sphilip1(m): 6:18pm On Nov 30, 2016
About 2 days ago, the Telecommunication giant, MTN, said it has come to a final conclusion that commencing from Thursday, December 1st, 2016, it will increase the tariffs for some of its data plans.

After hearing this news, a lot of wailing consumers like me have become speechless since we don't know whom to point fingers at, as MTN has shifted the blame to NCC

In an SMS to subscribers, MTN said it was only complying with the new rates set by the Nigerian Communications Commission for operator.

The SMS reads:

Dear customer, please be informed that from 1st Dec, some MTN data tariffs will be increased to reflect the new rates set by the NCC to operators. Thank you.

To be sincere, this is obscure, don't you think our customer right should prevail?

Webmasters / Does Your Blog Need A Makeover? by Sphilip1(m): 4:57pm On Nov 30, 2016
There must be something in the air. Bloggers everywhere are redesigning and transforming their blogs. And many of the blogs that I follow have jumped on the bandwagon. Some include:

LindaIkejisblog – Ads ready with nice background take over.

TechCrunch – Just went through two rounds of changes. In the first round, the kept their overall look and feel but did a bit of reorganizing. And just recently, they completely overhauled the top links of their blog
.
How To Blog – Made a drastic change from a brown theme to a light-colored white and gray theme.

Techkibay - Neat layouts with a mature red design, ads ready and yeah! Mobile friendly

A Blogger Blog – Completely overhauled blog. Went from a red and brown theme to a blue and gray theme, reminiscent of John Chow‘s theme.

Tips From A Network Marketer – Kept the same overall color scheme but moved to cleaner, wider, more fully-featured theme.

And these aren’t all of them! …nor does this include the many bloggers that have made smaller tweaks to their themes.

So what’s up with the wave of blog transformations?

Well, most bloggers haven’t mentioned why they made the change, but some have. The reasons included:

Accessibility. Some themes cannot be comfortable used by many visitors. Perhaps the colors make the text hard to read, or maybe the font size is too small…

Search Engine Optimization. Believe it or not, some themes are better suited for search engine optimization than others, and have been known to improve the ranking of blogs.

Speed. Some themes are faster than others. And with Yan reminding us the we only have 10 seconds to impress our visitors, speed is a great reason to switch to a lightweight theme.

Features. This is probably the most common reason for switching themes. Some themes, for example, have lots of innate functionality that make managing a blog easy and more efficient.

What about your blog? Are you thinking of giving it a new look? And is this based on feedback from users or something else?

If you're running a blog on Google Blogger and you want to give your blog an AWESEOME new look, with cool features, faster-loading speed and Search engine optimized, I believe you've just met the right guy.

Webmasters / How Did My Website Get Hacked? by Sphilip1(m): 3:46pm On Nov 27, 2016
If your website has ever been hacked, you know that fixing it can be a big headache. And even after it is fixed, you might find that your website has less traffic and worse search engine positioning than before.

As a result, fixing a hacked site is an urgent matter that should be taken care of immediately to minimize any negative effects. But before you rush to restore your files or get your website back online, the first thing you should do is determine how your website was hacked so you can prevent it from happening again.

5 Ways Hackers Might Have Gotten into Your Website

The list below gives some common ways websites are hacked, as well as a few things you can do to protect your website.

1. Your Web Host Is Vulnerable

Quite frequently, many websites hosted by the same web hosting company are all hacked together. In these cases, the problem usually lies with the host. Either their servers have some vulnerability which is being exploited by a hacker OR the hackers have figured out a way to gain access to one website on a server and then use that website to infect the other websites hosted on the server.

To make sure that this isn't your web host's problem, it is a good idea to report the hacked website to your host.1

If your host has a bad record when it comes to hacked websites, you should consider moving your website to another host which has implemented better security for their servers.

2. Your Computer or Your Web Developer's Computer Has Been Compromised

Sometimes, the root of the problem lies with machine used to access the website and not a vulnerability of the website itself. Hackers can infect a computer with malware, enabling them to steal saved passwords or infect files as they are uploaded to a server.

To prevent this from happening, the computer used to access a website via FTP or SSH should be regularly scanned for spyware, viruses and malware. Additionally, unencrypted passwords should not be stored in FTP programs.

Finally, when accessing any protected area of the website — FTP, SSH, control panel, databases — be sure that you are using a trusted network. And if possible, you should also access a website via SFTP, instead of FTP, because it allows your password to be encrypted when transmitted between your website and computer.

3. Your Passwords Have Been Leaked or Are NOT Strong

When it comes to passwords, they can only protect your website is they are strong. This means that passwords must adhere to the following criteria.

Unique. FTP, database, control panel, and email passwords should all be different from each other and not used on any other website.

Complex. Passwords should not be easily guessed. The best passwords do not contain words and are a combination of numbers, symbols, and upper and lower case letters.

Private. Be careful about who you share your passwords with and how you share the passwords. If sending a password via email, consider transmitting it as an image instead of via plain text.

Self-Selected. When you setup a web hosting account, install content management software, or create databases, passwords are typically automatically generated. And while these passwords are often very complex, hackers can sometimes guess these passwords. So it may be best to create your own complex passwords yourself.

Regularly Changed. By periodically updating your passwords, you lessen the chance that a leaked password can be used to gain access to your website.

Additionally, if your website has been hacked, make sure that the hacker has not created any unauthorized accounts that could be used for subsequent hacking attempts.

4. Your Content Management Software Has Security Holes

Content management systems (CMS) are used by websites to make it easier to manage content or maintain other functionality. But there is a big downside. Regardless of which CMS is used, there are always security holes that can be exploited by hackers.

To keep a CMS as secure as possible, there are certain basic recommendations that you or your developer should always follow:

Hide your CMS version and make sure it is not displayed in HTML markup.
Verify file permissions are correct and not too permissible.
Hide your directory structure.
Do not let two or more applications share the same database.
Additionally, the programmers behind your CMS may release updated versions or patches when vulnerabilities are discovered. And while it may be expensive or time-consuming to keep your CMS updated, it is worth the effort. After a new update is released, details about security flaws in the older version are often released. And what this means is that if you don't upgrade to the latest software version, hackers will literally have a roadmap to getting into your website.

5. Your Code is Poorly Written

Poorly coded website forms, dynamic pages, and CMS plugins/modules could result in easily exploitable security holes. To prevent this from happening, make sure that all custom code is fully tested and coded with security in mind. And before installing a 3rd-party plugin or module for your CMS, review the feedback and/or take a look under the hood to make sure that the plugin is well-coded.

No Website Is Hacker-Proof

Even after employing the best preventative measures, it is still possible for your website to be hacked. As a result, it is a good idea to regularly monitor your site and its log files so that you know if any changes have been made to its files or if hackers are trying to gain access. There are also a variety of 3rd-party monitoring tools which can be used to alert you if your website has been compromised

Webmasters / Google Analytics: Is A High Bounce Rate Bad? by Sphilip1(m): 9:11pm On Nov 24, 2016
A few years ago, when the SEO community first discovered that Google was using bounce rates to determine relevancy, webmasters were in a panic trying to figure out how to lower their bounce rates. But is having a high bounce rate really bad? In this article, I show you which high bounce rates are good and which high bounce rates you should be worried about.

What Is A Bounce Rate?

According to Google, bounce rate is the percentage of visits where only one page is viewed before a person leaves your website.

A high bounce rate is often considered bad because it might indicate that a person came to your website, didn't find what they were looking for, and left right away. But there are bounces that are good.

More often than not, visitors are searching for one thing. And if your page answers their questions, solves their problem, or gives them all of the information that they are looking for, then a visitor might leave your website completely satisfied without navigating to other pages. This is an example of a good bounce.

As a result, to differentiate between good and bad bounce rates, you should consider how long visitors stay on each page.

Using "Average Time On Page" To Find Bad Bounce Rates

The Average Time On Page statistic tells you how long visitors stay on a page before browsing to other pages or leaving your website. This statistic is a better indicator of quality content and relevance than bounce rate because even if the bounce rate is high, it lets you know whether or not visitors are reading the page before they leave.

Good High Bounce Rates

If a page has a high Bounce Rate, yet the Average Time On Page shows that visitors are taking the time to read the page, then you should not be concerned about the high bounce rate because visitors are obviously reading the content and finding it relevant and useful.

Bad High Bounce Rates

If a page has a high Bounce Rate and the Average Time On Page is close to 0, this is a bad bounce. Visitors are not staying on your website and they are not reading your content. You should figure out ways to make that page more appealing.

How Can You Minimize Bad Bounce Rates?

It is easy to minimize bad bounce rates. Here are some tips.

1. Evaluate page content and make sure that it is well-written and matches what visitors expect to find after reading the headline or title of the page.

2. Make pages more appealing by reducing excessive advertisements and fixing other unsightly features.

3. Determine whether your website looks trustworthy and professional. In today's world of beautiful user-friendly websites, many visitors quickly leave sites that look amateur.

4. Open external links in a new window. If you link to a lot of external website or embed advertisements, sometimes visitors will click these links and leave your website. Use target="_blank" where possible to give visitors the chance to stay on your site.

5. Split up long articles into separate pages. Sometimes visitors are intimidated by the possibility of reading large amounts of content. Don't overwhelm them.

6. If using paid marketing campaigns, make sure that your page targets the right keywords so that visitors expectations are satisfied.

7. Improve load time. The quickest way to turn a visitor away is to have a slow-loading website.

8. Make your website sticky by proving easy access to related content.

Webmasters / 3 Things That Can Hurt Your Search Engine Rankings by Sphilip1(m): 9:07pm On Nov 21, 2016
Search engine optimization is very important for all websites. When done properly, it increases free traffic from search engines and brings highly targeted visitors. Unfortunately, well-intentioned webmasters could unknowingly be doing something which may hurt their search engine rankings.

In a study, here are the few things that you shouldn’t do.

1. Repeated Submissions.

If you are waiting to show up in Google, be patient. By repeatedly submitting your website, you may actually negatively affect when you website does show up.

Similarly, if you automatically ping search engines when you submit new content, be sure not to over-ping. Google is not a fan of automated services and can penalize you as a result. Some sites, for example, have found their pages completely dropped from search engine indexes.

2. Post Duplicate Content.

Another easy way to get penalized is to serve duplicate content. Duplicate content is textual content that is on multiple pages of your website, or that is directly copied from some external website.

And believe it or not, you could be serving duplicate content and not be aware of it. If you own a blog, for example, you might have duplicate content shown on permalink pages, archive pages, and the home page.

You can also have a minor duplicate content issue by using inconsistent links. For example, our home page can be reached by (1)http://www., (2)http://www./, and (3)http://www./index.php. It is best to stick with only one of the three. We suggest the second option.

3. Participate In Questionable Link Exchanges.'

It is very tempting to do anything possible to increase traffic and get inbound links. However, not all links are created equal. And, whether or not you are aware of it, linking to questionable or spam websites can actually hurt your search engine ranking. So before you link to someone new, it is important to properly investigate their websites. (As a rule of thumb, don’t link to anyone with a pagerank of 0.)

In conclusion.

If you have little or no knowledge about SEO, I'll advise you take note of these 3 things and you should survive search engine penalties.

Webmasters / Why Are Bloggers Writing Shorter And Shorter Posts? by Sphilip1(m): 11:32am On Nov 17, 2016
Have you noticed? Bloggers these days seem to be writing shorter and shorter articles, with many of the longer ones artificially inflated with images. So what’s up with this trend? And why is it starting to dominate the industry?

According to the experts, readers want simple easily-digestible content, that can be quickly read or scanned.

There is stiff competition online. Writing shorter posts gets your point across quickly without giving visitors a chance to leave.

Realize that people have choices. With 80 million other blogs to choose from, I know you could leave at any moment (see, there goes someone now). So that makes blog writing shorter and faster and more exciting.

So is short the way to go? Maybe. There are indeed advantages to writing short posts which include:

the ability to write more frequently. Drafting long articles takes a lot of time. When you write less per article, you can easily crank out a few more.

Also, new visitors from search engines are looking for specific information. If they see a shorter post, they are likely to scan it for their search terms. But if they see something longer, they might just return to the search engine that sent them there.

A greater number of comments per article.

****** Very very important **************

But before you decide that short posts are for you, you should be aware of the benefits that you can have by writing longer posts.

Forget The Experts: Why You Should Go The Distance

Some of the most important reasons to write long articles include:

long articles are better link bait.
many topics cannot be adequately covered in short articles.
search engine optimization is arguably easier with longer posts.
long posts help you to build credibility.
quick ideas can be better shared in a different format such as Twitter.
sometimes visitors are looking for depth.

And if you are concerned about losing potential readers because of the length, be sure to structure your post so that it appears shorter. You can do this by using headlines, lists, and images to break up an article into smaller sections.

So what do you think? Are you conscious of the length of your posts? Do you care? And what do you think readers prefer?

Reminder: Jumia Black Friday comes up November 14 to 25.

Now how do you prepare for this great day?

1. Have a list of everything you want to buy (i.e. shoes, Television set, laptops, clothes, phones, just name it!)

2. Save all the money you can now, (if you've got the heart; join MMM Nigeria).

3. Get yourself a reliable internet connection. Choose a fast network.

4. This is very important. You need to be awake by 11:30 pm.

Black Friday starts at 12am precisely; most dealers usually post their products by that time and that's when you should start ordering all you must have written on your list.

If you decide to wait till it's 6 am before you start ordering, you may run out of luck as the goods might have been totally sold out.

Here is another important advice; be fast, smart, and accurate

In case you're asking, what can I buy?

Quickly drop a comment, cos I've got some delicious suggestions up my sleeve
