Jodera2: Lol .. How will he not be in a position.
The issue is that you still think Dm is them Makalele-like. Once they win back ball, nothing concern them again. Most people believe DM have evolved and if you don't, then it's not our fault. If not, you wouldn't have said that bolded especially the 2nd one
Like I said, the basics, the foundation that's what you are having differences with everyone. And that's why you are clearly at odds in this matter with most people. it's the reason why your choice for Partey's replacement will always be at odds with almost everyone esp as that lone DM role. So why do you think a good DM like Torriera cannot play for Arteta while Elneny is getting an extension? |

Jodera2: He is stationed in just a way that he's deepest amongst all arsenal players. He's always at the back of Xhaka, Odegaard and the attackers. Once we lose possession and the forward press fails to win the ball, then Partey (who's at their back) will help to mitigate the opposition attack or recover possession.
I don't know whether you think if arsenal is attacking then Partey will always join them while leaving his base When you see Partey playing deep during attacking it's because he is orchestrating play from the back as a CM. Not that he is waiting to intercept ball. That was why I agreed when Mostob said he is a DLP. If not he is no different from Ndidi or Kante who are clearly DMs. It is from that role, that he is asked to give defense splitting passes. If he was just waiting to intercept ball, then how does he give those passes? He will not be in a position to do that. |

Jodera2: So in that case Tierney was a winger while Xhaka was a FB? Is this how you understood it? Lol. Xhaka covers Tierney whenever he pushes forward. Simple. At that INSTANT, Xhaka becomes the FB and Tierney the winger. Aubameyang was a winger in Arteta's formation, but drifts into CF during attacking phase. That's total football for you. Whats then important is the roles they perform for the manager. So when I say it's the FBs (especially the RFB) that does the DM role for Arteta don't get me wrong. |

Jodera2: Thank you. The thing is, it's the skillset that matters reason why I won't go for Ndidi or Kante to replace Partey in that lone DM role even though they're all DMs. The thing be say Spy no wan even agree say Partey, Rodri and Fabinho are all DMs and that DM roles have evolved. He's thinking DM is solely defined as dem Makalele dem— just tackling and winning balls. Finish.
And that's where he's wrong. If Ndidi and Kante are DMs and Partey does not perform their roles, isn't it common sense that Partey is not playing as a DM? |

mostob: Ball distribution and his ability to create as well. His assist for Laca last season (you should remember) and recently, the friendly at London colney when he gave a through pass to Nketiah are perfect examples. That's why he is suitable for Arsenal because Kante and Ndidi can't offer such skillset. Doesn't this mean that he is not playing as a DM for Arsenal? Because ability to both defend, distribute and create is being a CM. |
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) › Re: Arsenal Fans Thread: The Red & White Army: 2025/2026 EPL Champions! by Spy360(m): 3:53pm On Jul 13, 2022 |
mostob: Kante is a roaming DM. Not the type that will collect the ball from the GK and start spraying passes. His job is just to run around tackling and intercepting. That is why Jorginho complement him so well.
Ndidi on the other hand doesn't roam like Kante, he will sit back and cover up for overlapping FBs. He do make himself available for passes but rarely will you see him slide in a through pass for Vardy or any of their forwards. He sometimes do (especially for Nacho) but not as efficient as Partey.
Kante in Arsenal will probably be paired with Xhaka as he can't stand alone as a DM.
Ndidi in Arsenal will enable us play ESR and Odegaard as a double 8s. Very correct. So what does Partey do for Arsenal that is different from other known DMs like you mentioned Ndidi and Kante? |

This your argument ehn... But there is one thing you guys are not taking into context here.... Skillset
Ndidi,Partey and Kante are DMs but all have different skillsets. Arteta once play as a DM for us due to how good he was because of his ball distribution but guess what...our midfied always get overrun. Partey is a DM... However, his ability to pick out passes, hold the ball and distribute efficiently is what make him suitable for Arsenal. Lokonga can distribute the ball but there is a reason he can't play that Partey role which is because his size and weight is too small
Partey I playing as a DM for us...Ndidi and Kante are good DMs too but they may not be suitable for Arsenal because they don't bring what Partey offers for us. Partey is our DM What does Partey bring for us that Kante cannot? |

Jodera2: Are you not seeing that he explained it as Fabinho secondary role? How could you ignore the primary role that An.field fan explain in the first paragraph just to pick on the secondary role just to name him DLP.
I mean, sometimes even Ben White plays good transition pass from defence to our attackers both short and long ones. Does that makes him DLP too? On many occasions I've seen Ramsdale given straight passes both long and short to Lacazette and Saka in Midfield and it was accurate. Is Ramsdale a DLP too?
Come on na Spy I don't get this secondary role stuff. There are two phases in a game. The attacking and the defending phases. When attacking the whole team is, so also when defending the whole team is. Can a CDM as you put it be defending when his team is attacking? Android 17 simply explained their roles when attacking and when defending. Nothing like primary and secondary roles. |

Jodera2: Lol... Moved where? This is me saying CDM/DM even from our very first day we started this discussion Moreover, is a CDM not a DM? Central defensive midfielder. That is a DM that has all the zones to himself and isn't sharing his zone with anyone.
Odegaard and Xhaka are CM/AM but because they share one zone, then they'll be termed RCM/RAM (for Odegaard) and LCM (for Xhaka). With the R and L respectively meant right and left(just as C is for the central). It's the reason why you'll hardly see Odegaard at the left part of the pitch or Xhaka at the right part.
So boss, just know that CDM and DM means same thing. The C there is just the zone they occupy and nothing more RCM and LCM means waiting fa? Right Central ... What does that mean? You can say LAM or RAM not RCM please. C in CAM means central and that implies the middle of the pitch. But C in CM means one that performs both attacking and defending duties. Which we have both agreed Partey does for Arsenal. We may have known him to be a DM but is that what he is doing for Arsenal? If he does defensive duties alone, one can say he is a DM. But if he does both defensive and attacking duties then he is more than a DM, he is a CM. |

Jodera2: Total football? There's a reason why I don't want to talk about it cos it might make us digress from what we're talking about.
Almost all elite coaches presently uses total football. In fact, that's what is in vogue presently. Example — A striker dropping deep and acting as a Midfielder. A FB attacking high and playing as a winger. A winger playing Infield to score like a striker. Defence pushing upfield to play like Midfielders.
In a nutshell that's what total football is. But then, does that stops a defender being a defender or an attacker being an attacker.
Trent and Robertson have high assists and attack the box more. Does that stops them from being fullbacks? Fabinho and Van dijk that sometimes covers for Arnold and Robertson when a counter attack wants to surface through their side, does that now makes fabinho and Van dijk a FB?
You see why I was always mute on that total football ish? So why did you act surprised when I said FBs can play infield to cover DM. AMN did exactly that role in our FA cup win run. Xhaka often covers FB when Tierney pushes forward. It is about time you apologize. |

AnfieldFan: Fabinho is a CDM...
The Dlp role doesn't describe him, that's not to say he can't pick a pass once in a while because he can, but when he's on the field, he isn't scanning the pitch to pick out Salah or Diaz, rather, he's scanning the pitch to know when to time his run and intercept the opposing team's DM before he(opposing team's Dm) makes a pass or runs with the ball...
Also, because we play a very highline, Fab has to be closer to the opponent's half for the second ball if the press( front line and Cm's) do not win the ball back, so he's more of an outlet for a pass in the opponent's half rather than dictating play from deep...
When we are building out, he functions in the same way, creates an extra passing option in addition to our CB's so as to maintain numerical equality or even superiority in our half while at the same time, drawing out the AM of the other team which leaves space to launch very quick transitions, our transitions are notoriously fast.. Thiago does this more the though, we mainly do this when the press becomes very hot in our half... The bolded is simply the job of a DLP, so why say he is not? A DLP is seen in the buildout not when the entire team is defending or pressing. |

Android17: In a nutshell, Rodri is a CDM. He has the passing range and IQ of a DLP but City don't lack creativity so Rodri's role is measured in terms of that. There might be 1 or 2 games last season where he played as a DLP but that is his tertiary function.
Fernandinho started out as a box to box midfielder but his role kept adjusting as he aged. Beloved Jodera, how does this makes my argument nothing? He is spot on except for that D in CDM. He could have easily said DM so why say CDM? Besides someone with the passing and IQ of a DLP is what he is no need to paint. |

Jodera2: Thank you Anfield.fan and Andr.oid17 for your thoughts, explanations and contributions. I really appreciate.
So Spy360, you see that at least a Liverpool and Manchester city fan have acknowledged that both Fabinho and Rodri are CDMs in their team with proper explanation. From both explanations, you'll notice that they still have some attacking role to play such as transitioning and build up but that doesn't negate that they're DM carrying out defensive duties.
If you even do a survey on this thread as well as other thread asking the role of Partey's this last season, you'll most likely receive the answer that he's a CDM.
That number 6 role needs someone who have high sense of intelligence in Defensive duties, beating of press and good attack something Odegaard, Xhaka Or Tielemans lack It's interesting how you moved from DM to CDM. However you are still a bit far from the point. Take away that D and you are there. Why? Someone who both of us say performs both attacking and defensive roles shouldn't have a D to his position. It's simply CM. In regards to what Anfieldfan and Android17 explained (which are correct) they are saying the same things with me, but they refuse to take away that same D which is making their point meaningless. Check my response to their posts for details. |

Na because of issues like this dem dey bring update on new terms come give am English name. Cos no football term be half 6 half 10
Anyways, He's a DM. You can call him creative DM or if possible CDM, or Modern DM. Maybe CDM might fit your satisfaction because of the C for central there which helps in him responsible for buildup and ball transitioning and creativity from deep.
While I'm always insisting he's a DM is because he's the anchor man(base player) in a 433. Hardly you see a triangle 433 that the anchor/base man isn't a DM and that was what Arteta deployed. I would have agreed with you that he played as Cm last season if we were playing a flat 433 but obviously we didn't and we aren't.
The base player in most 433 formations are usually DM. But Pep, Klopp and Arteta don't use a DM instead they move a CB (in the case of Klopp) or FB (Pep, Arteta) into the DM position, while the others overload the final third. The base player becomes a play maker and creative hub for the team. (Alcantara, Keita and Fabinho for Liverpool, Fernandinho, Gundogan, Rodri for City, and Partey for Arsenal) This is total football which is practiced by the Cruff prodigees especially by Barcelona, Ajax, Man City and now Arsenal. When they are defending everyone presses, while the CM covers the back 4. In this particular tactics, the base or anchor if you like is not referred to as a DM but as a DLP or a CM. The difference is due to their roles and not necessarily the positions they cover in the line up or formation. Go and read about total football tactics. |

Jodera: Okayy... Just answer this.
We all know that Nketiah and Jesus are number 9 in terms of role. We know that Odegaard and Xhaka are number 8s in terms of role
What number is Partey last season? Number roles are outdated and obsolete. Absolutely. There are eleven players for each team on the pitch at the start of a game. That's all. Johan Cruyff ended all that use of numbers to define roles with his introduction of total football. However, if you insists, Partey's will be a blend of 6 and 10. But even this does not clearly define his role in the team. In other words he is like a half 6 + half 10. |
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) › Re: Arsenal Fans Thread: The Red & White Army: 2025/2026 EPL Champions! by Spy360(m): 2:49pm On Jul 11, 2022 |
Jodera: This bolded here was the beginning of our debate and we didn't agree on anything. If we did, we wouldn't have gotten here.
You said Partey duties is just attacking in that role while I said the bolded. That's why anytime you're bringing dem Tielemans or Odegaard to play that role, I'm always insisting that they can't since they lack the defensive attributes to play that role (I didn't bring attacking attributes since I know they already have it) but you said it doesn't matter. You even said Partey is not focused on the defensive duties and I proved it to you that it was false. It's that defensive issue that brought about the DM-CM brouhaha.
How you now suddenly agreed on Partey doing defensive duties well needs to be studied sha. From nowhere to are now-here I never ruled out Partey's defensive contribution. My post is still there, dig it if you wish. My stand has always been that Partey has the unique qualities to play that role and while he was injured the likes of Odegaard was tried there but did not work out. Which implies that they were not cut out for the job. Secondly, I made clear that a players position is what he does not necessarily who he is. I gave an example with Xhaka playing in an AM position last season. One may claim he is not an AM but that's where he plays. You may say Partey is a DM, and will be correct in terms of who he is (that's not my argument) but what he does for Arsenal is a CM role ( which brings to bear his attacking and defending qualities- his pass for Nketiah in the friendly with Ipswich being an example). Anyways, whether we stated it or not, at least we have a common ground of agreement that he does both attacking and defending duties well which makes him what he is. Whether you stated it first or not, I AM AGREEING TO IT. Now based on this agreement, doesn't that mean he is something more than a DM? You call it modern but that's off key. He is a CM. |

In this case,
1.. I've explained to you why someone like Tielemans or Odegaard can't play Partey role and why we need someone like Partey attributes, you still no wan open your mind 2.. I've explained and showed you countless proofs on why Partey is a DM and what DM does but you still no gree nor open your mind 3.. I've explained, used examples, quotes and screenshot on why the word "modern" exist and why it's an official generally accepted word in football terms, you still no gree nor open your mind
And the worst part is that you don't want to even give proofs or reason but you're just always stuck with your claim then start looking on how to punch holes in mine . This is just exactly like our Sambi-tavarez debate where instead of giving me points you just counter my already laid points
And the main reason why I even want us to end it is simple — the basics of that Partey's position is what we have contrasting ideas on.
Until we reach an agreement on that, I'm not sure we'll ever agree on that or even reach a compromise. Reason why I'm leaving it to time. You see it as running away, but I'm not.
Same way I left your "Nketiah will bench Lacazette before season end" to time and it favoured you spectacularly and also same way that you said "Sambi can replace Partey in that role as long as it's the same structure" and it backfired spectacularly.
It's also same way I'm saying let's leave this to time and it'll always have a way of answering all these debates. It's simple. Here's what we have agreed on... That Partey does both attacking and defending duties very well. I just simply asked you what that role is called. You said Modern DM, while I said CM. Which is what we have not agreed on. Our disagreement is not a matter of opinion or philosophy but misconception, which is what I want us to clear out. If it is about opinion then what you have posted about time will be valid. But it's not. I will boldly accuse you now of being arrogant based on what we have agreed already. |
