Deficit on I-20 form is $13k Assistanship $32k Uncles SOA $19k
Abuja Embassy, young white lady Visa approved 16th July Placed on AP 17th July -7th August Visa issued 8th August
Me: Good morning
VO: Good morning, pass me your i20, passport Me: passed them
VO: why are you going to the US? Me: I'm going for my masters degree in Public Health with concentration in environmental health at ETSU, Johnson City
VO: why ETSU? Me: the public health program at ETSU is well tailored to environmental health which is my area of concentration. The faculty is also involved in alot of research activities in environmental health including Environmental Exposure Assessment and Risk Analysis of Pathogens which perfectly aligns with my research motives.
VO: what will this course do for you? Me: This course will give me an indept knowledge into this area of public health and will equip me with recent analytical tools/methodology to be able to coordinate public health researches in environmental health when I come back to Nigeria.
VO: what are your plans after graduation? Me: I plan to come back to Nigeria and pick up a job in any of the tertiary health institutions as a public heath physician; use the knowledge and experience garnered in ETSU, to contribute my quota in improving the health sector by working with the federal or state ministries of Health, WHO or NGOs in providing comprehensive health care services in Endemic areas and endemic prone areas Such as IDP camps.
VO: who is sponsoring you ? ME: I have a GA offer which comes with tuition waiver and stipends; my uncle will be assisting me with the deficit.
VO: Alright, I will be approving your visa now( with this warming smile)...other routine talks. Handed me 2 white papers and my I 20 Me: Thank you. I felt like I was dreaming. As I left the embassy I could not contain the joy. The cab I boarded I had to tell him to keep the change imagine!
A day later I received a mail from the embassy asking for supplemental information which I responded to promptly. Since day was placed on AP. Last updated 7th August and issued 8th August.
Appreciation:
This was entirely God's favour and mercy. I had to pray and fast reminding God of His promises upon my life every single day. Even booked mass join with novena to our mother of perpetual help...Catholics can relate!
Scharwarma, Fairheart, PreStan, Dreambound NL and other gurus in the house I cannot thank you guys enough for the transcript reviews and mock interviews. It's only God that can reward you for your selfless services and sacrifice in this thread. Scharwarma one bottle of your brand in Johnson city when we see
For those still on AP, three words for you guys...Pray, Prepare and Proceed. Pray and go ahead with preparations for your travel plans(except booking for flight). I know it's not easy with the anxiety and depression sometimes but to be honest the only change you can make is through prayer and faith in God. What's the worst thing that can happen!!! Will someone die? Pray and keep faith
For those that were refused, dust up and refire. Don't allow one VO in one window stop you from achieving your sweet dreams. Post your transcript for reviews, disturb the gurus for mock interview and retire. No room for quiters here...saw 9th attempt transcript sometimes here.
For those awaiting interview, in the words of Scharwarma 'just go and get that visa' most importantly don't show desperation in that way you will be more articulate in your response.
For the newbies, we were all once newbies. Just post any queries you have here no matter how stupid it seems. I am sure you must get a valuable response. Be focussed and prepare ahead for your studies abroad.
For the silent observers(I inclusive), try and say hello sometimes. Maybe you might be helping save someone's dream with your little contribution as many are helping save yours.
I will be available to help with any assistance as much as my knowledge and schedule permits.
Thank you everyone. |

Wow! So many approved visas from Lagos Consulate today Congratulations guys I tap into this grace for Abuja Embassy too walepepe21: Good day fam. My visa was approved this morning at Lagos consulate. I had a full tuition waiver with 13,300usd deficit. Used uncle as my sponsor. VO didn't as for his SOA. I will share my transcript shortly.
Congratulations |

Thanks for your response. I work work on it blackmamba147: From your transcripts you didn't get to the point where the VO asked to look at your SOA or sponsors SOA, which means the VO wasn't convinced you were eligible based on your response regarding how you will fund your education. Besides if you had presented your uncles SOA its not up double the deficit, I don't expect your uncle to empty his account because of you. You would have been in a better position with a student loan. The VOs know what it takes to live and study in the US, trust me it's not beans. You can apply again, but to be honest I don't see your chances improving.
I would say this again if anyone here has family willing to sponsor them, that family should be able to advance you the funds to deposit in your account at the beginning of your application process, that way on your I-20 part of your funding shows from personal funds, you will come off in a better position than someone with uncle statement worth hundreds of millions of Naira. unless of course the funds are not really available for you and its just a means for you to get visa and escape from the shit hole |

Uncle's SOA has about 6m ViceChief: bro for a deficit like this, what is the minimum balance that should be in the SOA? |

A bit nervous as almost everyone before me was refused visa. I tried as much as possible to explain my duties as the GA even though I was not told in the mail what my duties would be. I will print the email the sent me for the next interview. How do I get to do the mock interview? Thanks for the encouraging words dear sharwama: I am so sorry about your denial. A part of me feels it has something to do with your responses. You didn't write your full responses, your GA responsibilities, what did you explain? We also don't know if you fidgeted during the interview. Yes body language reveals a lot. Yes, you have a GA but you also need to convince the VO about the authenticity of your studentship and your post graduation motive(if the need arises) There's a mail your grad cord or your department must have sent you, it includes a congratulatory message and notice of assistantship offer. Go with that to your next interview. I remember trying so hard to get an official letter of GA offer from the department but to no avail. I was later informed by my school that that email was the most official proof of funding I could get. You would need mock interview(s), you will need to fight back. You deserve this visa, you are worthy, you are so worthy! |

But my account is quite short of the deficit as I just started work few months ago quote author=blackmamba147 post=79487254]
I think the bolded above is where the problem is, you are a doctor working and still need sponsorship from your uncle, I think you would have been in a better position if you were sponsoring yourself or you had a scholarship. I would advise folks that have family that want to sponsor them to make the family member deposit the funds in your account at the start of your admission process, that way you provide your own SOA as proof of funds, especially for folks that are working. Except the idea of using a family members SOA is a guise to escape out of the shit hole[/quote] |

Do me. I am a doctor too Inimbom: I have been a silent follower and I have learnt a lot here but I need help in decision making about choice of school. I am a doctor and I am about to apply for a Master of Public Health program. I need help from gurus on this, I want to pick between University of Florida and University of South Florida for my application. University of Florida is top rated in the state of Florida, I think second in ranking in the state but not among the top 20 schools of public health by the Usnews and times ranking of MPH schools. University of South Florida is ranked 6th in the state but is Top 15 in Usnews and times ranking of schools of public health. Now they both offer the concentrate in mph that I want. I want to pick a school in Florida along with the other schools I want to apply to. How do I make a decision. Which of the two schools would give me a competitive edge seeing that UF is ranked higher than USF in the state but USF MPH is ranked higher than UF MPH by Usnews. |

Hello Flora! You mind if we can connect? Floral895: Hello Nairalanders, I would be an ingrate if i don't share my transcript cuz what I learnt from this forum helped me during my interview and am still learning from other folks view. Now a bit of background information about my Journey to studying abroad, just think it will encourage someone out there. Journey started right after NYSC, but my focus was on UK and Australia ( Germany, Finland etc a no no due to the language stuff) and I applied to like 8 schools looking at Chevening and Commonwealth scholarship. after applying like 3 times for both scholarship and not been picked I said now I need to broaden my horizon, mind you I have browsed through what it takes to study in the USA but due to nthe fact that I have to write GRE, I just bone USA. In between, I applied to Unilag for MSc Anatomy ( focused on it and paused hunting for oversea study) and did quite well. Job hunting started again in Nigeria, Academia will be like you need to be registered for PhD bla bla bla but from my MSc experience I said PhD is outside the country. Afterwards, I said its time to write GRE, I mean no be spirit dey do the exam na, so I prepared well amidst my part time job and apprenticeship (rookie tailor I am) and got 303. Then I focused on PhD in Biomedical sciences, applied to like 3 schools and was still rejected, I cried rivers of tears. Now the week I got my last reject, after the depression thing for like a week, I asked myself what else and I went back to look at the rejection letter, what wast written there was that: your academic background is not fit enough..... then a Lecturer Mentor of mine said Girl, why don't you try MSc. So, the search began again for schools with funding in Biomedical sciences. Picked ETSU, cuz it was clearly stated GA was on ground plus they've got my previous transcript and test score with them (sending those documents cost a fortune as we all know). Now, since fall admission (2018) don pass, I applied for Spring (2019) even though people say Spring dont usually come with funding I just said let me try ( it wont hurt anybody na). Applied to other schools too ( Penn state and Purdue but for fall 2019) Surprisingly, ETSU admission came in first with full funding (GA) and deficit of 4 million. With Nairaland's help, I filled the DS 160 form myself and everything that follows ( paying visa, schedule appointment etc) Now for those that have siblings in the USA (I have 3 with same surname oooo), i was honest and filled their name there with their status. Also, filled in my part time job and that I have a Msc already too (although a friend advised against this) and my previous travel history in the US To my Interview, was interviewed by a female VO VO: pass me your I20 and passport VO: what are you going to do in the US me: to do my MSc in Biology conc Biomedical science at ETSU VO: where did you hear about the school me: from searching Anatomical society of america which has list of grad schools in anatomy and cell biology VO: as a GA what would you be doing me: taking up 2 lab sessions in a week VO: how will this deficit in your account be covered me: by my Dad and I passed the account statement I printed since Novemebr VO: what do you currently do me: am an Anatomy Instructor in bla bla bla VO:Do you have siblings in the USA me: yes, 3 VO: where are they and what are they doing me: in ABC state doing this and that VO: I will be approving your visa etc After like 4 days I picked my Visa Personally, I think you are responsible for searching out schools yourself, also if it requires that you do GRE don't cut corners with schools that doesn't require GRE, just do it. Also, funding helps lot I mean how many average Nigerians get $44,980 for schools when Americans themselves take loans to study. Also, asking questions can help a lot: Knowledge is power In between @ shawarma, can't wait to meet you in ETSU Biological science department (the best in ETSU ( free foods and stationery) lus our executive aide is bae) and Johnson city where the Transit bus is free for students , housinga nd food are cheap too Wishing everyone the best in Life. |
