Politics / June 12 20TH Anniversary: Drop Your Thoughts by Starlett: 7:08am On Jun 12, 2013
This is a new generation of Nigerians, no doubts. Very few active Nairaland members probably marched on the streets of Lagos in defiant attempts to actualizing June 12 struggle. Yet we cannot run away from our past. What are our thoughts on this watershed in our political history?
Health / Re: 10 Signs to know that Death Is Near by Starlett: 10:58pm On Jun 11, 2013
Unbelievable that someone should post this! Is death now a disease for it to have signs and symptoms? These are signs that could go with just about any sickness.
However, if there's already a sickness on ground, then one could talk of signs of death.
Politics / Re: Dana Air Had Technical Fault While Taking-Off In Lagos Yesterday by Starlett: 2:44pm On Jun 11, 2013
This is precisely why I opened a thread shortly after the unfortunate Dana crash of last year and called for all passengers who encounter similar discomfiting experiences in air travel to promptly report their travails for others to take note. I commend the OP for blowing the whistle, even though some aviation experts may consider this as crying wolf over nothing. It's still infinitely better than waiting for the catastrophic to happen (God forbid!) and coming out to say the ponctifical "oh, I was nearly their victic the other day. They've been doing this a lot" blah blah blah.

Politics / Re: Reuben Abati On Dame Patience In 2010 by Starlett: 5:12am On Jun 10, 2013
Abati had to choose between his pocket and his conscience and he clearly chose his pocket. When he'll understand what he has done to the public goodwill and trust that he previously enjoyed is when he leaves this appointment and starts trying to ingratiate himself back with "society" as a social critic!

Interesting. Would appear that the ANC actually doesn't want him to address the parliament but is perhaps timid to say so out rightly. Am wondering whether all is actually well between Zuma and the ANC politically. Even though I must admit that Obama has done far from enough to better the lot of the average African American, and much less the African. Why then would any African parliament be overly excited at the prospect oh having him address them, I wonder?
Politics / Re: B*r*e*a*k*i*n*g News!: Finally The Sponsors Of Boko Haram Step Out by Starlett: 2:28pm On Jun 07, 2013
But, seriously... is anyone surprised?

I have said it repeatedly and will soon open a thread on it: Come 2015, I DOUBT IF I WILL VOTE ANY NORTHERN CANDIDATE. Simple reason being that I am yet to hear of ANY, and I mean, ANY of the Northern political leaders come out openly and categorically to condemn the attrocities of BH. Now, I could have still excused them based on the benefit of the doubt that they were being held back by fear (well known fact that BH murdered and executed several vocal islamic preachers and local leaders who spoke up against them in the North) but their latest utterances over the SOE has revealed the truth at long last. Appears they're more interested in protecting the interest of BH than the interest of millions of Nigerians, both North/South, rich/poor, Christian/muslim.. etc.

While it may not be for GEJ again, am almost certain now that my vote won't be for them either!
Politics / Re: Nigeria's Army Gunning For Boko Haram by Starlett: 2:11pm On Jun 07, 2013
This is what I mean by balanced and objective reportage of events in Africa. You can only get this type of foreign reporting from media like Fox news, CNN and BBC. In fact this one is so pro-truth that I marvel that BBC could take the pains to tell the world the good that the Nigerian soldiers arrival in previous BH enclaves has done.

NOW, WHERE IS THAT YEYE NEWS CHANNEL KNOWN AS ALJAZERA
Politics / Re: Aljazeera Sent Packing From Nigeria? by Starlett: 5:41am On Jun 06, 2013
We haven't sent them packing yet... And we don't really need to either. They should keep making a mess of whatever little shattered credibility they still have left in Sub-Saharan Africa and very soon, they'd have sent themselves packing economically! Mtchew!

Smart move from Jona's camp to discredit this guy and more importantly, strike division in the APC camp. The use of the phrase "CONSENSUS CANDIDATE" is surely going to breed fireworks!

Bihari will not rule Nigeria again. Full stop. His recent comments on the ongoing govt-led military onslaught against BH has shown his true couloirs as a man that loves his political ambition and sectional interests far more than he loves Nigeria and Nigerians.
Politics / Re: Civilians Among Dead In Nigeria's Boko-Haram Offensive - Aljazeera by Starlett: 2:41am On Jun 01, 2013
This is the very reason I have never like Aljazeera with respect to their false reportage of Nigerian events. Right from the days they reported a lot of falsehood over the Jos sectarian crises and the Yar Adua sickness saga, I just simply scrapped them from the list of channels I watch.

And I keep saying to all who'll hear that CNN is by far more objective in their reportage of our issues than AJ. I simply can't understand what AJ, an Arab news station, stands to gain by painting us bad before the world. They never talk or highlight the evils of these BH guys, but as soon as there's any genuine effort on the part of government to put things in order and secure our nation, they come for our jugulars.

Anyway, good a thing, our own Army Chief already raised the alarm about BH moles in our forces. they'll all be flushed out soon and court-marshalled. As far as am concerned, this propaganda simply failed to fly... cool

Politics / The Burdens Of Islam By Kila: A Fearless Treatise, Must Read! by Starlett: 7:25am On May 30, 2013
By Anthony A. Kila
When it comes to Islam, there are some cumbersome burdens that media practitioners and social commentators are silently coping with. One is the need to be very sensitive and indeed tread quite carefully when they have to deal with anything Islamic because of possible reactions of Muslims.

These dreaded reactions come in various forms and magnitude, depending on the fortune (or shall we say misfortune?) of a writer, actor or speaker. It varies from the petty insults of readers that take their time to call someone like me names and wish me ill for pointing out that it is wrong and ignorant for people to go and kill other people because they think there are sinners. It may also take the shape of those who feel the need to participate in protests where flags and houses are burnt, people injured and killed because of a mediocre quality video or cartoon they find offensive. Then, there is, of course, the more solemn and stately fatwa that turns its addressees into celebrities by driving them underground and into a life of fear to be lived in the company of security forces.

The need, still in 2013, to take extra care when it comes to anything Islamic is a burden not only on artists, actors, writers, thinkers or speakers but also to humanity as whole. As human beings, we have gained more from independent and rational thinking than from dogmas and rituals. Just as Christianity was, in the bad old days, a burden to the development and progress that comes from critical and analytical thinking, liberal initiatives and diversity of opinion and actions some centuries ago when the church had access to unlimited power and its leaders were accorded the status of infallible, so is Islam today, if unchecked or in the hands of unchecked bigots, a burden to development and progress. That might sound harsh, but it is simply true.
There is another Islamic burden that analysts and commentators have to bear: the conscious and continuous need to generalise. The “do not generalise” mantra is based on the idea that there are billions of good Muslims in the world so one should not equate the activities of some few violent or ignorant Muslims with the identity of Islam. Of course, we must not generalise, how can one disagree with such statement? That fact is so obvious that it risks turning into an excruciating truism. It is time to take the discussion to a higher level. Let us make it more exciting by asking ourselves some simple questions: how come out of those millions or so Orisa worshippers in the world, that Christians and Muslims scornfully call pagans, we do not have cases of just a few Orisa terrorists? Why is it that we do not have some few cases of Jehovah Witness terrorist?

We all need to share these burdens in a more equitable mode. There is no gentler way to put it; the simple truth is that more Islamic scholars and especially leaders, need to understand that there is a part of Islam that is still struggling in its bid to coexist with modern times. Just as Christian leaders and scholars have had to do in the past, Islamic scholars and leaders need to today come up with some theoretical elaborations and theological references that will deal with modernity or update their system, as my students will say. As Muhammad Iqbal puts it, “The task before the modern Muslim is therefore, immense. He has to rethink the whole system of Islam without completely breaking with the past…The only course open to us is to approach modern knowledge with a respectful but independent attitude and to appreciate the teachings of Islam in the light of that knowledge, even though we may be led to differ from those who have gone before us.”
For the endeavour of these leaders and scholars to work, Muslims of goodwill also have the burden of making a choice: embracing the modernists and isolating the bigots. Choosing is necessary but not sufficient, Muslims of goodwill also have the burden of engaging in some very well-defined actions that will make it clear that their own religion is different and against the practices of violent, selfish, and misguided bigots that preach hatred and engage in viciousness in the name of religion.

Examples abound to follow for those who really care; they can stand in support of and follow the teachings of the likes of Dr. Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri, who in his 2010 Fatwa, not only gave a total condemnation violence but issued an “absolute” condemnation of terrorism, which he judged to be without “any excuses or pretexts”, he even went on to declare terrorism as kufr. There is, of course, our own Sheik Ahmad Mahmud Gumi, who in very clear terms has had the courage and lucidity to call the members of Boko Harem evil and asking all northerners to hound them.
We don’t need to wait for one more body to have the courage to call evil its name.

Which satellite station are you tuned to that have ONLY AIT as the local station on its bouquet ? This lie alone proved that you are not sincere and only out to ridicule the tv station in question.

Ilugun, FYI, am in a village somewhere in Ogun State for official assignment. I'm lodged in a guest house, and as is typical of many hotels in Naija, in my room there is a TV with a selection of DSTV channels to watch (already determined by the Guest House mgt.) Of these channels, most show only films. AIT is in fact the only news channel available - no CNN, Channels, or even NTA. Does that make my story clearer now? I thought you were one of the more respected commentators on NL. Why then would you call someone a liar?

Although I didn't watch TV during the event, but I'd be surprised if it was covered live by AIT. However, their showing the silent footage at their news hour this evening indicates that they had a camera man there at least.
Politics / Surprising Under-reporting Of Achebe Obsequies By AIT by Starlett: 8:39pm On May 23, 2013
Maybe it's just me wondering, Peeps, but I can't help noticing that AIT seemed to struggle with reporting the barest facts and updates about Late Prof Chinua Achebe's funeral these past 3 days.Yesterday, I watched the 8pm news hour and not a single item on it. Today, not minding that it was the grand finale and had at least 2 serving African Presidents in attendance, the event was given less than a minute coverage, with no footage of comments or interviews by any of the attendees or dignitaries, just silent pictures and the voice over by the AIT newscaster. Yet this is an event of international mention, being given prime coverage even by 1st class world media such as BBC.

What could be responsible for this? Unfortunately am "locked" away somewhere in a remote location close to Lagos where the only local station available on satelite TV is AIT!

N'Landers, am counting on you guys to confirm to us if it will be the same with NTA by 9pm and Channels TV at 10 pm tonight!

She try small. What else could she have said on curruption? Everyone knows that was a silly move by Jona. That's one choice anyone in his govt must make: Either honorably throw in the towel and resign in protest, or beat about the bush whenever such pointed questions are asked.
