32 Days To Go.... There's Still Hope

As ICAN exam date draws closer,
a lot of questions are springing up from students,
though, mostly by students who are writing ICAN exams for the first time.

Some students are asking for the area of concentration, my answer was that,
this is not the time to start asking for area of concentration,
it is time to start solving more past questions…… solve as many past question you can find.

One of the students proceeds to ask what the Dos and Don’ts of ICAN exams are.

These are the some of the suggested DO’S and DONT’S for ICAN exams.


DO’S

• Know your exam center ahead.

• Get your exam docket before the exam day.

• Make a visit to your exam center if you are chanced.

• Make sure you register for the courses you are writing.


• If your location is far from exam center, move to a hotel close to your exam center a day or two days to the exam.

• Make sure your calculator and writing materials are in good condition.





DON’TS

• Don’t go late to your exam center, lateness could destabilize you.

• Don’t interact with anyone while in the exam hall, this could be passive as malpractice.

• Don’t take mobile gadgets (Phone, Tabs and others) into the exam hall.


These do’s and don’ts might seems too basic, but it is better to do the right thing to avoid the “stories that to touch”

ICAN 2019 Nov Diet Date: 12TH November to 14TH November 2019.
Registration Closing Date: 1ST November 2019.
Payment of Exam Fee Closing Date: 31ST October 2019.

Let me quickly do a recap of previous article;

Make sure you know what your child’s distraction is/are.
The second child I coached was a victim of distraction and
loosing focus on her studies when she was in the secondary school.
Initially I thought that maybe it was puberty issue that was affecting her.

Later I changed my approach and started asking her about the
latest movies and gist in town. Sometimes I would be forced to
watch the Trailer of these movies just to be updated so I could discuss with her.
I had to start checking different blogs for the latest gist in town.

You could see the excitement on her face when she
noticed that I was contributing to her discussions.
So, whenever we were done gisting, I will then ask her about her academics,
what she did in school and what she had studied.
Then I proceed by helping her with her daily timetable,
after a month, she was only allowed to watch movies on Saturday.
Gradually I was able to reduce her distraction and helped her focus on her studies.

There are strategies which help to boost exam confidence:


1. GOOD PREPARATION

There is no substitute for good preparation that can help you excel in exams.
When you know that you have prepared well for the exams and there is nothing that you have not gone through, you can perform well in it.

A good preparation entails the following;

• Study well by paying attention to your Updated Video Lectures…

• Visit the member’s area and access the soft copy materials (past questions and their solutions)

• Participate in the Free Online Telegram class lectures and ask questions where you do not understand and where necessary.

With all the above in addition to making a good revision before the exams, your confidence will increase.



2. SLEEP WELL

Like your preparations, your sleep is also important during exam time.

Adequate sleep is vital. Not only does getting enough sleep control your mood, energy, thinking, performance, productivity, and general health, it also regulates your immune system, hormone and endocrine functions!

More sleep = a happy, healthy, and successful mind!
So don’t deprive your body of sleep.




3. AVOID TOO MUCH CRAMMING

Cramming for exams is bad. It leads to more stress, lowered comprehension, and poor performance.
When a student crams for exams at the last minute, he is studying to remember rather than studying to understand.


And with so many materials and stuff to cover, the student’s brain doesn’t have a chance to absorb or make lasting connections about what he or she is learning.

As a result, students will forget the material almost as quickly as they learned it.
The best technique to avoid cramming is early preparation and practice.



4. BELIEVE IN YOURSELF

When you believe in yourself, you’ll be willing to try new things.
When you feel confident in yourself, you’re able to devote your resources to the task at hand. Rather than waste time and energy worrying that you aren't good enough, you can devote your energy to your efforts.
So ultimately, you'll perform better when you feel confident.

Abeg make I ask you, should I stop this ICAN Exam Countdown?

Wondering why I ask?

A mother complained that she does not know what to do
again about this Nov diet ICAN exams.

The first thing you do when you get that letter inviting you for an interview (and those letters are usually tailored to make you feel special) is jump up and celebrate.

I have tried these secrets only twice in my career life; the first one was at my last interview as a rookie- the interview that got me my first job- and the next was when I was getting promoted as the group head of my department in the same company.


THE SECRETS OF THE INTERVIEW ROOM

Either of these two things will happen in the interview room; It’s either you blow away your interviewer or you get blown away.



SECRET 1- BE INFORMED

GET INFORMED! RESEARCH! DO YOUR HOMEWORK! ASK QUESTIONS AHEAD OF TIME!
If you for instance, you get a letter from X and Y limited inviting you for an interview. If I were you, the first thing I’ll do is to ask Google about the company- their vision, mission, objectives, core values…

The next thing is for you to know the position you are getting interviewed for- research about that position too. It will be a good thing if you got to know who and who had been in that position, get to know their success or failure story.

INFORMATION IS KEY and the best way to access this is key is by researching and asking questions.

As an optimistic person, positive thinking will help you generate

I remember what happened last diet when a lot of students were having

My two children told me their experiences when they wrote their
WAEC exams years back, my first child Bolu, actually wrote WAEC twice before
making all her papers but Dimeji wrote the same exam once.


We learnt from Bolu’s experience , she said that writing WAEC when she
was in SS3 was so demanding, she wrote the exam under intense pressure
because
she was writing the exam for the first time, she was being too careful not to make mistake
and that made her to be very slow during the exams.
She also mentioned that she struggled to remember what she had read because of the exam pressure.


For Dimeji, we decided to let him write SSCE exam when he was in SS2,
even though he passed 3 out of the 6 papers, He was so confidence and
was eagerly waiting to write SSCE exams when he got to SS3……
to our amazing he made all his papers.


Based on my children’s experiences, I decide to interview past SSCE students by using online survey, here is what I discovered;


• Attempting GCE at SS2 will enable your child to have
the experience that will help him/her to improve. This is a big advantage for your child.



• Attempting GCE at SS2 will increase your child’s chances of gaining admission into the university at a young age.



• Even if you child did not pass GCE at SS2, he/she will be better off than those who did not attempt. Your child chances of passing GCE at SS3 will be high, because he/ she will be exposed to GCE’s standard ahead.



• 60 percent of the questions in WAEC/NECO/GCE exams are from SS1 and SS2 syllabus, so they are still fresh in your head at SS2.



P.S: Don’t let your children stay extra 1 or more year at home in other
to pass SSCE exams, give them an edge by writing GCE before they get to SS3.

Once again, it’s Independence Day in Nigeria.

It’s a good time to remind ourselves of all the ways we
can exercise our independence, especially in our career.
Most of us are in need of career happiness and
it can only be obtained by creating career independence.



Wondering what career independence is all about?

Career independence is that state where you have the
career control to find your dream job, get the promotion
you deserve or to make a career change.

You might say this sounds like almost impossible in Nigeria.



A friend of mine who worked with the Telecoms (Telecommunication)
told me of how he had worked with the three main
Telecommunication companies in Nigeria, his service was so
needed because of his expertise, the last Telecoms company had to
sign an exclusive agreement with him with a huge offer for him not to
go back to other Telecoms companies.
Today he works in the UK for a Telecommunication firm.



I also remember when I was still in paid job,
our accountant was so good that the company could not let her go,
they had to sign a long term contract with her.
She had save the company millions of naira in terms of Tax payment and
has brought in more jobs for the company.

Sometimes, getting career independence could just be as simple as
having enough savings or side hustle such that you are not
100 percent dependent on your monthly salary.



If you don’t have side hustle with your work yet, just review all of your expenses,
and trim the ones that don’t matter.

Financial freedom can actually give you career freedom.

It is important that you take a closer reflection at your professional life to
achieve career independence, but there is no better time than NOW.

This is a continuation from the article on How To Deal With Your Difficult Boss (Part 2)
So I will continue from step 3

STEP 3
BE PROFESSIONAL

At all times during your eight hours in the office, ensure you assert professionalism at your place of work. Being professional means that you are
- Not being emotional with him. One way you won’t be emotional around a difficult boss is to sympathize with his behavior. Most difficult people are usually products of circumstances, so whenever that boss yells at you or call you names, understand his problem.

For me, I feel pity for my boss when he would yell at me, I looked at those veins on his neck and they look as if they would burst. In other words, I wasn’t hearing all the words (abuses); I’m like ‘oh my God, this old man is going to have a goiter!’

- FLAWLESS. I know you want to say it is not possible but I can tell you from experience that there is a way you can appear neat, organized and prompt to duty and assignment and it is as though you are flawless. If you are seen as flawless, I know more will be expected from you. But if you are not a person who is afraid of challenge, then here is the challenge- step up your game. Flawlessness means respect and dignity.

- A GOOD COMMUNICATOR. When communicating with a difficult boss, try as much as possible to do avoid verbal communication. Send all communication through e-mail and you have to be comprehensive enough to avoid having to explain yourself in person.
More so, remember when we were younger and was been spanked for doing something wrong and we were to say ‘thank you’ after a bitter spanking. Exactly! This is how you must do it. After yelling all sorts at you, in the end say “Thank you sir/ma”- this sort of disarm him unconsciously.
Learn communication skills and improve on your communication with him.

- NOT AN OFFICE TALKATIVE. Be cautious of what you say about your boss in your work environment because you are going to be a boss someday, and because what you say will most likely be repeated to him. For whatever reason, do not talk about your boss to anyone around the office. If you feel so hurt and it is unbearable, you can talk to your personal friends, spouse or family members.

You might find a friend from the office who is willing to talk about your boss, telling you how terrible he can be. Just listen all through the conversation but if you must say something to keep the person talking, you can talk about how you find him challenging, how he has helped you improve by making you do more… let all you have to say about him be positive.

Why Optimism Matters For Your Success In ICAN Exams

The first phase of success in an exam is to believe in yourself….. Be Optimistic.
Though you have to study well for SUCCESS to be guaranteed.
Negative thinking is like a giant wall, it can prevent us from accomplishing our goals (exam success).
If you are optimistic and did not study well…….. You are on you own (“oyo”).
But the irony is that,
Even after studying well, you still have to be optimistic to pass your exams.
According to Helen Keller “Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement”


So, how can you be optimistic for your ICAN exams?


• ELIMINATE NEGATIVE THOUGHT

Have you experienced the situation whereby you are just feeling like
“what if I fail ICAN exams”,
especially when the exam date is fast approaching?
It is important to eliminate all the negative feelings and thought by
replacing them with positive words.
Say to yourself “I know I will PASS this diet” ,
“My Success is a must this diet” “I study both hard and smart to clear my ICAN exams” ,
“I look forward to a great result” , “I succeed even in stressful situations”
This is known as AFFIRMATION.


Do this AFFIRMATION preferable when you wake up in the morning
and before you go to bed at night.


I did an experiment last diet by placing some ICAN students in a group, before then,
these students have been having challenges passing their ICAN exams for years.
So while they study hard to pass ICAN exam, they also do their Affirmation every morning and at night.

When the result was released, they all passed. One of them asked me
that “Sir which Juju you use” …… I replied that
“Na power of Positive Affirmation oooo , no be juju”

The STEP 1 on HOW DEAL WITH YOUR DIFFICULT BOSS is to BE PRODUCTIVE.
So let’s move to the next step,

STEP 2: PAY ATTENTION-
Whenever he has something on you, always pay attention to him. I’m not saying that you should listen to every word he says to bring you down, listen to his complains.

Pay attention to his intentions- is he a downright psycho or an impressionist or a perfectionist? Does he have a complex (inferiority or superiority)? Or is he being pressured by superiors and is also not organized? If you pay close attention, you’ll be able to decipher.

At first, my boss ‘Adolf Hitler’ would yell and yell and I wouldn’t be able to make out any sense of what he said other than words that gets me depressed. But one day, he yelled ‘Do you ever even listen to me at all!’ and as usual, I stood there and then he yelled again ‘Are you deaf?’

I don’t why; I just woke up to the realization that I had never listened to the old man (my boss). He was not yelling because I wasn’t doing my job, he was yelling because I wasn’t doing his job. He wanted me to overlap duties and responsibility, and so if anything that was not supposed to be my official business went wrong, I had to bear the consequences. When I knew this- that he is a perfectionist, I braced up for the task.

This is how to pay attention; decide not to listen to the personal impact, (how he’s making you feel incompetent) listen to what he’s saying about professional matters. For instance, ‘You are so dumb, you don’t even know that when writing a report, you have to start from ….’

You don’t listen to the name he called you; you listen to what he said about your report writing. And don’t tell me it is not easy not to listen when someone is bringing you down, I have been there and I can tell you that it is easy especially when you make up your mind that you don’t want to quit.

Pay attention to when he is angry, why he is angry, what gets him angry, who gets him angry. Paying attention helps you to identify the source of his problems with you helps you to learn how to deal with it.

If quitting is not an option for you, then, here are some practical steps to dealing with a difficult boss

STEP 1: BE PRODUCTIVE-
Productivity makes a person relevant in the organization. Get any or every material that can help you become effective and efficient in your work place in order to reduce the rate at which your difficult boss is displeased Once I knew I couldn’t just quit this job like the previous one. I had to do all I could to be relevant. I was constantly on my toes and this helped in a lot of ways; I was able to preempt my boss to the point that I got to know what he wants per time. I can boldly tell you that even though my boss is not a smiling person, he appreciates my efforts and does not yell at me anymore even though I make mistakes once in Challenges are very healthy for our personal and professional life. Wake up to the challenge and constantly update your skills for maximum productivity.

WHY YOU SHOULD EVOLVE TO AN IT AUDITOR WITH CISA

Sometimes your job responsibilities determines what you learn next, My old time Chartered Accountant friend Banjo, who is now a fellow was promoted at work and now one of his job responsibilities is to communicate with external auditors and to provide guidance to coworkers and management regarding accounting discrepancies, compliance vulnerabilities and internal controls.

Still Haven’t Decided On Starting ICAN Exam Preparation Yet?

Do you ever go to bed angry with yourself because you spent all day completing tasks but in the end, you did not accomplish your most important goals?

and his reply was three months earlier to the exams

If you bought it three months earlier, then why wait three weeks to the exams before studying I asked.

And my final answer to him was that I understand you are a busy person, but the reason you are having the issues with passing the exams is that you are not doing what others are doing that made them pass.

The simple truth is that everything that is worth achieving is worth dedicating time to; nothing can be well achieved without any sincere commitment and dedication.

Why wait till a month or three weeks to ICAN exams before you start remembering that you have any exams coming up?

It’s not enough that you commit to grow your career without ensuring and taking the necessary steps to see it through…

The consequences of waiting until a few weeks to the exams before you start preparations are that;

You will be under pressure to meet up with the syllabus which will, in turn, start heightening your level of anxiety and then the fear of failure will start setting in.

Then instead of studying to understand, you will start thinking of cramming everything because you want to jack everything within 2 days.

Why risk coming back by next diet to write the same exams that ordinarily you would have to pass with a better effort and preparation? Why not sacrifice and dedicate a little of your time now and pass your exams at a goal? Two hours a day is enough to pass this exam.

Remember; there is no substitute for hard work and good preparations when it comes to achieving goals of becoming a Chartered Accountant.

4 Tricks to Boost Your Exams Confidence

There is a saying that to accomplish anything requires a combination of inspiration and perspiration.
