Sometimes fear will just grip you when you see the seriousness in other student’s facial expression. Even the sight of the exam paper can make you start sweating.

I remember watching a lady who sat next to me on ICAN exam day, her lips looked so dry, she was sweating and her hand was shaking when she was given the exam paper.

What she experienced at that moment was anxiety or fear?

Fear and anxiousness on exam day is normal but you must not let it prevent you from doing well in the exam.

At the beginning of last two month (September), I reviewed all my goals for this year and realized that even though I have not achieved as much as I stated in my new year resolution, yet I’m grateful.

Out of the 7 goals I planned to achieve this year, I have only achieved 1 and I failed at the remaining 6.

Initially I so was discouraged, but I decided to look inward and learn from my mistakes. So, I listed all the things that I have failed at this year, reviewed what went wrong and mapped out the possible solutions.

I decided to work on my failures by trying to achieve one more goal and just in the space of one month (October) I was able to achieve the goal, making a total of 2 goals achieved this year.

For the month of November, I have decided to achieve one more goal.


You too can still pick yourself up, learn from your failure and move on, don’t say this year has ended already……

No it has not.

Go ahead and try something new…….. Your success might depend on this last push.

3. HAVE A DAILY PLAN FOR EVERYTHING YOU DO, AT WORK, HOME AND DURING YOUR STUDY TIME.

Consider writing down the things that must get completed in order for that day to be productive. You need to write them down so that you can be organized and not be overwhelmed.


Don’t allow any unplanned activity distract your plan easily, except if it is an emergency.


Have you ever noticed that it takes you almost as long to begin a task as it does to actually complete it? Since it takes some time to find the drive to begin, distractions could destroy your productivity in a hurry.


The simple act of beginning to work already takes some time so it’s important to avoid distractions by having a daily To-Do List.


Never let distraction be an obstacle to your success in ICAN exams this diet.


P.S: Silence your phone unless you’re expecting a monumentally important phone call. Close every browser window except the ones that are necessary for the task at hand.

My two children told me their experiences when they wrote their
WAEC exams years back, my first child Bolu, actually wrote WAEC twice before
making all her papers but Dimeji wrote the same exam once.


We learnt from Bolu’s experience , she said that writing WAEC when she
was in SS3 was so demanding, she wrote the exam under intense pressure
because
she was writing the exam for the first time, she was being too careful not to make mistake
and that made her to be very slow during the exams.

For Dimeji, we decided to let him write SSCE exam when he was in SS2,
even though he passed 3 out of the 6 papers, He was so confidence and
was eagerly waiting to write SSCE exams when he got to SS3……

Based on my children’s experiences, I decide to interview past SSCE students by using online survey, here is what I discovered;


• Attempting GCE at SS2 will enable your child to have
the experience that will help him/her to improve. This is a big advantage for your child.



• Attempting GCE at SS2 will increase your child’s chances of gaining admission into the university at a young age.



• Even if you child did not pass GCE at SS2, he/she will be better off than those who did not attempt. Your child chances of passing GCE at SS3 will be high, because he/ she will be exposed to GCE’s standard ahead.



• 60 percent of the questions in WAEC/NECO/GCE exams are from SS1 and SS2 syllabus, so they are still fresh in your head at SS2.



P.S: Don’t let your children stay extra 1 or more year at home in other
to pass SSCE exams, give them an edge by writing GCE before they get to SS3.

2. STAY OFF SOCIAL MEDIA FOR NOW

Haba, wetin happen nah, just because of ICAN exam, we should leave Social Media?
Well, it is just an advice that could aid you to pass your ICAN exam.
...Anything worth doing at all is worth doing well.

To help you maintain your break from Social media, turn off social media notifications or delete the apps entirely, you can always reinstall after the exam.

You can also just log out of these sites or Apps and applications on your computer and phone. Having to log in every time you visit the site or use the app may reduce the chance that you will check them.

If you are already addicted to Social Media, there is still a way out. For instance, if you normally use social media for 4 hours daily, cut your social media use back to 1 hour or 30 minutes per day.

Promise me you will give it a try. Yes!!!


P.S: Without a good cause, you will have a hard time staying away from social media. Let me remind you that you are taking a break from Social Media for your CAREER ADVANCEMENT… to PASS ICAN exams.

There are lots of activities that could act as distraction whenever you are revising for the forth coming ICAN exams. Funny enough some of these distractions might be unavoidable

But

You can actually MINIMIZE DISTRACTION.

Most of the time, notifications from electronic devices (phone, tablet, laptops, desktop and others) only add to the distraction.

In fact, most of us are so used to getting interrupted while studying, even when there is no notification on our phone, we still check just to be sure.

Seems we have been configured to be distracted… smiling!!

There are other forms of distractions at work and at home…. we will discuss them all.

These tips will help you to minimize distraction and increase your focus and assimilation while revising.

1. TURN OFF THE DISTRACTIONS
You may want to turn off all notifications from smartphones and desktops applications. Consider checking email only four times per day and handling each inquiry only once.

Controlling your devices and not having that technology control you will help reduce distractions and increase your focus and level of assimilation.

You have spent a lot for this exam, so don’t allow anything to deprive you of SUCCESS this diet.

“WAEC Result is out.” Someone said

Immediately I heard this, my heart started racing on this day. I could not eat or sleep because I’ve been hearing all kinds of news.

Some people failed woefully, some passed but failed either Mathematics or English, some people barely made it past five credits. Bad news everywhere!

My parents were just hoping and praying I passed all my WAEC papers.

I refused to check my result on time because my cousin told me he failed two important subject and his parents almost ‘skinned him alive’. In fact, he confessed to me that his life was over.

And I was like God please let me pass ooo because I knew I didn’t answer some questions very well

Eventually, after one week I decided to be brave and boldly checked my WAEC result

Lo and behold I passed all my papers ooo! Actually, it wasn’t an excellent result but at least I didn’t have to re –write any paper and my cousin wasn’t that lucky

This is the feeling of most students. This is how you feel when they hear WAEC result is out

Your heart just starts racing, you get scared and begin to regret some of your decisions. You wished you read well, or wished that you sat at the back of your friend who is more brilliant, or you wished you took that expo in…

But

You don’t have to be scared when you are checking your result if you prepared well for it

I know you are thinking it’s not that easy

And

In your mind, you are saying that WAEC syllabus is very voluminous.

Yes it is but if you start preparations on time you will discover you will be able to cover the syllabus

Research as shown reading is becoming more difficult for students, not because you don’t want to read, but because there is a lot of distractions like the internet ,games.

So what’s the solution?

The solution is through video lecture

If it takes 10 hours to finish 150 pages book, it will take just 2 hours to finish the same book in a video format

What I’m saying is that you can use the same 10 hours to covered 3 textbooks in a video format instead of 1 textbook in 10 hours in a physical text book

Can you see what I mean?

And it can also be repeated as much time as possible especially at areas you find it difficult to understand.


According to Word stream statistics, students can retain 95% of a message when they watch it in a video but can retain 10% of a message when reading it in text.

Can you see for yourself?

Now you see that you can cover the voluminous syllabus through the WAEC video lecture which is going to make learning easier and faster for you, without having to fear when WAEC result comes out.

I just can’t pay much attention to others things happening at home and in the office, even in church as I listen to the sermon, my mind was just fixed on ICAN exams.

It is not that I am actually scared, though sometimes I do feel scared and my heart rate will start breathing faster for split seconds.

I guess it is natural to feel scared sometimes. I just have to pass and become a Chartered Accountant this diet in order for me to be able to apply for promotion in the office, so 90% of what is on my mind now is ICAN exam and I am very optimistic that I will pass this diet.

You too can remain optimistic just like the story of one of our students. Don’t allow “little fear” to take away your courage. Just remain calm and be optimistic, this diet is your diet.

When I spoke with Ese in 2017 on the need for his own personal development, he gave a pompous reply

The Manager got to know about this and confronted the MD that the young man promotion was too early.
By the next month, the MD made the young guy the Branch head- he was placed over ‘Manager’ Ese.

Every company likes assets and they spot them when they arrive. Be sure to retain your position in your organisation by a continuous personal development.
If you are out dated or irrelevant, time will tell and it is either you are replaced or sacked.

The first phase of success in an exam is to believe in yourself….. Be Optimistic.
Though you have to study well for SUCCESS to be guaranteed.
Negative thinking is like a giant wall, it can prevent us from accomplishing our goals (exam success).
If you are optimistic and did not study well…….. You are on you own (“oyo”).
But the irony is that,
Even after studying well, you still have to be optimistic to pass your exams.
According to Helen Keller “Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement”


So, how can you be optimistic for your ICAN exams?


• ELIMINATE NEGATIVE THOUGHT

Have you experienced the situation whereby you are just feeling like
“what if I fail ICAN exams”,
especially when the exam date is fast approaching?
It is important to eliminate all the negative feelings and thought by
replacing them with positive words.
Say to yourself “I know I will PASS this diet” ,
“My Success is a must this diet” “I study both hard and smart to clear my ICAN exams” ,
“I look forward to a great result” , “I succeed even in stressful situations”
This is known as AFFIRMATION.


Do this AFFIRMATION preferable when you wake up in the morning
and before you go to bed at night.


I did an experiment last diet by placing some ICAN students in a group, before then,
these students have been having challenges passing their ICAN exams for years.
So while they study hard to pass ICAN exam, they also do their Affirmation every morning and at night.

When the result was released, they all passed. One of them asked me
that “Sir which Juju you use” …… I replied that
“Na power of Positive Affirmation oooo , no be juju”

MAKE A TO-DO LIST FOR YOUR CHILD

Having a lot of chores and homework assignments
can be overwhelming for children.
You can help your child focus on getting things done by
making a to-do list or general timetable which should contain,
when the child sleeps, wakes, eat, prepare for school, house chores,
study and other things.
It should include week days and weekend activities.

Though most students don’t like timetable for their day to day life,
so tell your child that it is a to-do list of his daily activities.

You must always review the to-do list with your child on a
daily basis if you really want your child to follow the to-do list regularly,
this will make you become the accountability partner of your child and
it will make your child to strictly follow the to-do list because he/she is accountable to you.

I know the question on your mind now is that,
“What will happen if the child is not following the to-do list strictly?”

You need to have an agreement with your child on what
he stands to lose if he did not follow the to-do list. For me,
I told me son that any time he misses his to do list,
he would lose a day of going to the Cinema for that month,
he was so reluctant to agree, then I ask him that
“Are you saying you want to be missing your to-do list?”
he said no and eventually agreed.
As my son continue to follow his to-do list,
I notice how he is now so good at time management,
He is so orderly, organized and focus always.

That is exactly what could happen to your child if you
follow the same principle.

P.S: Time management is important for students to get high marks.
Student’s success in studies depends much on managing time efficiently.
The habits and morals they acquire during schools time and home
will stick with them throughout the future.

Yes there is still hope, you can still pass this diet.
A student asked me if he could still pass this diet exam,
my answer was YES, even though I did not ask of his level of
preparedness before answering him. Then he replied me that, why I’m I so sure.

The truth is that I just love to be optimistic because that is the
first stage of success in anything we do in life.

Then I proceed to ask him how well he has prepared,
he said he is actually writing 2 papers this diet and has read very well,
but while doing revision, he keeps having the thought of “what if I fail again”

If you have ever failed an exam like ICAN before,
it is very easy to start thinking that you will always keep failing.
It’s easy to start thinking that YOU are indeed a failure.
Don’t fall for such a destructive thought.

Instead, remind yourself that:
 Just because you have failed ICAN exam before doesn’t mean that you’ll fail again. Failure is just an event that happened to you, you are not a failure.

 You have been successful in other things; primary, secondary and university, so you can be successful in your professional career

 As you continue to revise by solving a lot of past questions, keep saying to yourself “I WILL PASS THIS ICAN EXAM”. Continue to say it on a daily basis until it sinks into your subconscious mind.

Now, let me ask you, “WHAT IF YOU PASS THIS DIET?”

Reducing distractions can improve a child’s focus.
We live in a world full significant distraction and children
are the most vulnerable to this distraction due to technological
advancement; Phone, games, internet and others.


So, how exactly can you as a parent help your child to reduce distractions?

1. BY REMOVING GADGET FROM THE STUDENT:

Removing gadget from the student is essential for the child to focus during study
, unless they are a part of the educational materials being used,
even as that , it should be controlled. For example,
if the child must use the system or tab for studying at a particular time,
then there should be no internet. Sometimes,
the child might need internet to do research,
you can add parental control to the device or monitor what the child is doing.


2. CHILDREN SHOULD ALSO STUDY AT DEDICATED STUDY AREAS:

Children should also study at dedicated study areas that are far from
televisions and other electronical gadgets.
When your child is studying, make sure he/she is doing it with the TV,
computer and mobile phone off.
Just make sure you help your child to minimize distraction.

In the previous article, I explain in details why getting informed is a secret of blowing off your interviewer. Now, I’m going to share another secret with you.


I noticed that no matter how informed a person might be. Not getting ready can easily put a person off balance and it presents a well-informed person as awkward.
This will make the interviewer see such person as underserving or unqualified. I’ll explain…

I graduated from the University with a very good 2.1, excellent grade right? Exactly what I thought but I was knocked off from my first, second, third interview and was practically sent out of my fourth interview.
Now I can tell you that there were some interviews where I got myself well informed. I knew what I was going to say, not only that, I also had answers to every conceivable question yet I was not employed.

So what happened?

I WAS NOT READY!

SECRET 2- BE PREPARED

Now being prepared is not all about carrying G-maths or any other material of study for written or oral interview questions. It is a more than studying or practicing questions and answer. It is beyond picking the best or the right outfit for the interview. It is beyond wearing a nice perfume or showing up early at the interview.
While all of the above are nice and also very important before you go for the interview, it is also necessary that you are physically, emotionally and psychologically prepared for the interview.

One of the mistakes I made while preparing for those interviews I failed was; I would study and study, I could do several sleepless night before the interview, the worst was that, I would even skip sleep the night before the interview.

Having made this mistake, I can boldly assert that forcing yourself to be awake when you are supposed to be sleeping before an interview is an error.

It will give you a mental, emotional and physical imbalance. First, you will not appear smart, no matter how you try to cover it up with your properly ironed shirt or dress. Second, you will get edgy at anything- you will frown and you won’t even be aware that you are frowning. In your mind, you are trying to do your best but you are not in the proper emotional state to give your best- your smile will be sour. Lastly, you will tend to be sleepy- you don’t intend to be but you cannot cheat nature, you have stressed out your whole body

So here is where I drop my pen for part 3, but stay tuned to find out more about how you can get properly prepared for that life changing interview.

So while she tried to explain the fact that she had no power or even influence to help me with a contract from the company, I was able to engage her and she explained the power play in the organization. In fact, I got to know that the recruitment process was contracted to an HR company.

I got to know the HR Company that was going to conduct the interview; she went as far as telling me about the officials conducting the interview.

When I got home that day, I did a research about the company- their vision, mission, core values… I also did a research on the officials according to the names given by the receptionist.
I can tell you that having this kind of information at your fingertips gives you a 100% confidence as you approach the door to the interview room.

As for me, for the first time in my life, I had a confidence that I never had. I was just sure I would get the job. So as they called my name to enter the room, I walked boldly into the room. It just felt like, I knew the people who were going to interview me; they didn’t feel like a stranger to me.
So I sat opposite the interviewers- two gentlemen and a lady. They kept the questions coming and kept answering them based on their (own) objectives and the company’s objectives which I already knew.
And then one of them asked “You seem so confident.”
And I replied confidently “I have spent my years getting knowledge that will help build a great career life for me, therefore, I have every reason to be confident.”

Bingo! That was just it. I got the job.

P.S. You too can get that job, but getting the job is not automatic just because you know more about the company, your skill is what could finally get you the job.
