It's extremely difficult to do both. Keep talking to him as you've been doing but don't get violent about it and don't get all deep into his business. Even if he refuses to listen, keep talking to him. Worst case scenario, they break up and he realizes all the wrong he did. Hard as it may seem to see him fall, that's the best way to come out of this mess unbruised.
