Car Talk / Re: My Honda Civic Is Very Thirsty, Please Help! by Structuralman: 10:04pm On Aug 25, 2021
och12:
My Honda Civic is Consuming Fuel Excessively!!!

Hello guys, please my 4 cylinder, 1.8 engine Honda Civic, 2009 model, is consuming fuel excessively, on a full tank, I'm getting about 15/16 miles per gallon on city and few highway driving, instead of 29/30 as expected.
I get only 200 miles instead of the standard 383 miles on a full tank, which is appalling.

A full tank of 8k will be exhausted after about 3 to 4 trips to and from mainland-island (ikeja-VI), and this is not economical for me at all.
At times, I question my decision on buying the car as I understood that it and Toyota corolla had the best fuel consumption, based on popular opinion, before I purchased it.

I bought the car as Tokunbo with a mileage of over 100k, also, there was no catalyst in it (the pot was empty), so I purchased and fixed a new catalyst for N40,000, this increased the mileage from 200 miles to just 215 miles on a full tank, which is very infinitesimal.

In addition the Check engine light has refused to clear even with the new catalyst replacement, it has been throwing up error code P0420 “Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1).

My mechanic is now suggesting a fuel system overhaul, he suggested checking and/or replacement of the fuel pump, air filter, spark plugs, fuel injector and other accessories, which does not go well with me after buying and fixing a new catalyst for 40k.

Please what can be the probable cause of this anomaly auto experts?
I will greatly appreciate your contributions.

Thank you.

Check that both upstream and downstream oxygen sensors are working fine. The air-fuel ratio may be bad. Use another device to scan your car to ensure that no other codes exist.

Thank you so much sir, but are you suggesting I ring it ?

Ringing a vehicle may just be a temporary solution. Try and save up and get a tokunbo engine. Make sure it's toks. You will then really enjoy the ride.

please i notice my car gear was serviced with abro ATF as the remaining oil and gallon is still in the car boot, the oil is still clean and i have scan the vehicle , error shown has been corrected but the problem experience ( the car draws abit while changing from 1 to 2 and then suddenly jump and start moving normally until u apply brake.) still persist.
should i replace the oil ?and how much is ATF - Genuine Honda DW1 in the market.

Quit using Abro ATF.
Use Genuine Honda DW1. Price is about N4700 per can. You require 4 cans for your ride.

i just did my calculations and i discovered the car did 5.8km/l for city driving which i think its very poor. bought 27 litre and all it could go was 98mph which i converted to kmh.
please is my calculation right?
what can i do to reduce the fuel consumption.
Thanks.

Your calculation is absolutely correct. You are a mathematical genius sir.

Please correct me if I'm wrong. The right oil to use is the Honda ATF DW-1 transmission fluid right? I'm planning to drop it off at this new mechanic tomorrow but sadly I won't be chances to stay there with him. Do you have any suggestions as to what's happening?

Overgauge of your ATF is also not good. Below are the right fluids for your car:
ATF - Genuine Honda DW1
Engine Oil 5W 30.

Tell the new mechanic to scan your car. He will understand what this means. Then post the codes from the scan here.

After fixing the top cylinder valve that was bent, did you rescan the car? If yes, what coded did it throw?

Hello Guys, I have a Honds Accord 03. It has been home for a while because of its issues. My sister drives it 80% of the time because I'm hardly around but I try to keep up with it's maintenance.

The problem started when I took it for servicing and they noticed the gear oil was almost empty. It was replaced with a Abro ATF oil. Same oil was used for power steering.

After going through this thread I checked the car this morning. For sale of history has gone three trips to the mechanic while having all these issues.

Your mechanic needs to be shot!! How dare him use abro ATF as your gear fluid. People are wicked ohhh.

Good morning house.. I notice that when ever i start my car in the morning and engage the gear to drive it takes about 6 seconds to enter drive and move.. Sometimes it forcefully enters it after that.. It drives normally and the D Light on the cluster board does not blink.. Pls help honda gurus

Any other suggestions that's efficient and pocket friendly?

No other suggestions sir. That's the manufacturer's specification. Any other ATF than what is specified will lead you to buying another gearbox. We know times are hard but just save up for the best ATF for your ride.

Data provided is limited to deduce anything tangible unless u can provide vital parameters like: fuel trim,.maf ,calculated load at different engine speeds and point of failure ( i prefer to see more detailed data to make a more quality contributions) which will help but this might be too technical savvy for what u can handle with ur kind of diy scan tool.
Alternatively, take your car to a recommended technician to troubleshoot the issue further physically instead of remote talk.

Okay thanks.

This kind of technical data cannot be attributed to anything meaningful if u don't come out with the particular drivibility issue u are experiencing and history of repair .

Okay, thanks you for your prompt response. The car drives well when the engine is cool like early mornings. The performance is okay for about 30-45 mins. But after the engine gets warmed up I find it very very difficult to move fast. Secondly the car also drinks a lot of fuel.

Unrelated to transmission. Possibly a blocked pickup strainer filter inside gear.

Drain the transmission oil and refill with fresh fluid.

Do it when cold

Does the blocked pickup strainer filter also have to be changed?

Your best option is Honda's synthetic blend. You can contact Rowland for the current price. Used to be N2,500 per quart 2 years ago.

Low budget engine oil will ruin your engine life. There's a reason the manufacturer specified 5W 20 or 5W 30.
I know times are hard but just try to save up for quality engine oil for your car.
