from ur formula, i can deduce that the higher ur previous salary, the higher ur new salary. i.e someone who was earning 100k will now start earning 166k. and someone who was earning 200k will now start earning 333k. I doubt if they'll use this approach.

Ok, let’s analyze it this way;

Assume the time it takes both X and Y to produce 1000 bolts is k hrs.

Let’s go,

if it takes X 4 hrs to produce 1000 bolts,
then bolts produced in 1 hr = 1000/4 = 250 bolts.

Similarly,
if it takes Y 5 hrs to produce 1000 bolts,
then bolts produced in 1 hr = 1000/5 = 200 bolts.

Now, we know how many bolts each can produce in 1 hr.
It takes both k hrs to produce 1000 bolts.

How many will X and Y produce in k hrs?

In k hrs:
X will produce 250 times k = 250k bolts (if you can consume 2 eggs in 1 hr, in k hrs you will consume 2k eggs �)

Y will produce 200k bolts.

We already know that X and Y will produce 1000 bolts (our very first assumption)

But the sum of the individual works done by X and Y must be equal to the work done by both.

Therefore,
250k + 200k = 1000
450k = 1000
k = 1000/450 = 20/9
k = 2 2/9 hours (approximately 2.22 hours)

So, both can do the work in 2 2/9 hours!

There are other shorter methods but this one gives me more room for explanation.
