He invested in infrastructure that is commendable but is it sustainable for the economy? He spent money frivolously and owed workers their salaries sometimes up to 5 months in a row. He tried but best? I dont think so.

I wonder why we are mediocre in Nigeria or was he elected to go sleep at ASO Rock? All these unnecessary praise and accolades our leaders get for doing the job we elected them for is becoming annoying.

why is it okay for us to rain all manner of abuses on them for failing to do their job but not okay for us to praise them when they at least attempt to do it? Lets maintain a positive mindset please. ee can motivate people to do better by acknowldging that they have tried abeg.

Is this a good idea? Will the incoming chairman be able to gain his footing in just one month and successfully host one of Nigeria's most critical and controversial elections? Well anyway I'm sure this was one of the reasons why the polls were shifted. Jega's loyalty was in question.

Though i disagree with you about the generalization of bridal shower in naija. I have gone to some and i must say they were really daring and too explicit for me to start sharing the details here. The last one i went to i almost gasped with awe about how lesbianism was easily pronounced
anyway that's story for another day

I still believe the law is hostile and should be changed. Even common sense is enough to know that the sentencing was very harsh.

Ur opinion I understand but I disagree. The law is what it is as a matter of necessity. I am not necessarily pro capital punishment but I strongly believe that armed robbery and conspiracy to commit armed robbery should attract the highest sentence allowed by our judicial system and if that sentence be death so be it. If u have ever had to deal with these people u would understand why.

the law is at it is and not as it ought to be. Pointing a gun at me doesn't means he is capable of shooting me. The intent of a man can't be tried for devil himself knows not the intent of a man. Though treat to life is a criminal offence and it is punishable but it must be proved beyound reasonable doubt.

Ur argument is more philosophical than factual. Unfortunately the law as it is and as it ought to be is not philosophy. The law is a combination of facts and morality. There is no place for philosophy. Research on the following components of criminal law: actus reus and mens rea. There u will find the legal answer to ur thoughts trying the intents of a man's heart. I assure u a man who holds a loaded gun WILL and I repeat WILL shoot it where the appropriate circumstances presents itself. He must then be ready to bear the consequences of his actions. Ciao!

No matter what you think and say the judgement is still very harsh. They did not kill anybody with their weapons and now they are gonna die.
Nigeria laws are stupid laws.

Its not my opinion. Its the law. Not just Nigerian law but the law of many common law coumtries that still hand out death sentence. It is not so harsh because the law considers that any one who is armed is capable of causing grevious harm. If a person can point a gun then he is capable of shooting it.

Prosecutors usually charge people to court for multiple offenses even when only one offense is committed. That way they are hopeful of getting the maximum possible sentence for at least over or two of the charges.

In the case of these Robbers it was three: conspiracy to commit robbery, armed robbery and stealing.

Now both conspiracy to commit robbery and armed robbery carry the maximum sentence of death. Usually the judge would have handed two death sentences for both counts but since you can't kill a man twice, he handed a death sentence for one and a life sentence for the other. If there was no conspiracy charge, the judge would have still handed the death sentence for robbery.

Exactly.

You read this part of my post didn't you?

How exactly do you classify "conspiracy" seeing that they already got life for robbery?

for every count charge in law there is a corresponding sentence. When there is a multiplicity of charges then there will be a corresponding multiplicity of sentences to run either cumulatively or concurrently depending on the court's discretion. Conspiracy to commit a crime is a crime on its own. A crime is different from a conpiracy to commit a crime. A person may be convicted of one and not the other or both and attract seperate sentemces for each as the case is here.

according to the article the sentence for stealing was 3 yrs which is appropriate because stealing is a simple offence. The sentence of death was passed for a sepetate crime altogether. Do u see where the Op's topic is misleading? because they were not sentenced to death for stealing. If stealing was all they were charged for they wld hv only a 3 yr jail term hanging over their heads.

Driven:
They were not sentenced to death for stealing a fowl. Rather, they were for ARMED ROBBERY. Simply put, they used offensive weapons while at it, and according to the Robber and Firearms Provision, the sentence for that is death. This means, if a person arms himself with an offensive weapon to steal an egg, he will be sentenced to death if found guilty.

And that is the law, not my words... not the Judge's too.

So, easy on the 'na wa oh', 'how about those who stole billions?', etc.

#okbye

pls tell them. The level of ignorance on here about law is so amazing. The man was convicted for ARMED ROBBERY not STEALING. As a matter of fact if the charge was stealing the case would have been heard by a magistrate and a magistrate lacks jurisdiction to even pass the death sentence.

Op pls stop misleading the public. Every now and again someone creates a thread like dis to incite Nigerians. How long b4 we hv sense not to fall for it?

OP who informed you that Gershom Bassey is an unknown politician in Cross River state? Have you heard about Lagos Accord or the three wise men of CRS? Liyel Imoke, Donald Duke and Gershom Bassey are those who brought PDP to CRS. The trio had an agreement in 1999 to rule this state in succession not until the Incumbent saw it fit to rotate power to the Cross River North, a zone that has never occupied the Peregreno House..... Before the decision was made., Gershom Bassey had already prepared his mind to become the next governor.
OP get your facts straight...

tell him! Its obvioua he knows next to nothing abt CR politics

Do not mind the Op,he wrote on a topic,he knew nothing about. For your information Mr.Op,this guy is not a neophyte in the politics of Cross River state. He has been active albeit from behind the scene from the time of Donald Duke,it was even rumored that the triumvirate of this guy,Messers.Liyel Imoke and Donald Duke had a pact on who should be the governor among the 3 of them at any point in time so as to prevent the rancour that normally arises when it is time for politicians to honour an earlier agreement and to a very large extent they have been very mature in keeping to the agreement but the reason why he has opted to go to the Senate instead of contesting the P.D.P governorship primaries is what i know not.It would have been his turn to become the governor when the tenure of the incumbent expires. So get your facts right before writing on topics you know little about.

the reason why is that Gershom is from the south and the Governorahip has been zoned to the north.
Politics / Re: How Unknown Politician Defeated Serving Senator In PDP C'river Primaries by Sugardiva(f): 9:48am On Dec 11, 2014
Gershom Bassey is not unknown. Although If the promaries were free and fair prince otu would have won. he is popular amongst his people that is why calabar south boys have taken to the streets protesting the primaries result and tearing down Gershom Bassey's posters.

Bassey was imposed on them by the Govenor in order to compensate him because according to their pact he should be getting the Govenorship ticket even though its not his zone's turn. If he wasnt so compensated he would put eye on being Govenor.

I am no lawyer, but if there is no reason in law for her arrest, then the law is flawed. Pass a bill please.

An action lies against her in law but it is not a criminal action warranting an arrest. Her husband may bring an action against her in the tort of libel. Libel is not a crime and there is no such thing as attempted murder by proxy. What then is the basis for her arrest? And yes I am a lawyer.
