PoliticsWhy Osinbajo Sacked DG DSS, Lawal Daura by sunky97(op): 4:47pm On Aug 07, 2018
Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo sacked the DG of DSS, Lawal Daura over the invasion of the National Assembly by the DSS operatives, Daily Trust reports.

Masked and unmasked DSS operatives laid siege to the National Assembly this morning, halting lawmakers and staff from gaining entry into the complex.

Osinbajo announced the sack of Daura via a statement by his media aide, Laolu Akande without stating the reason. The sack was announce while he (Daura) was meeting with the acting President.

About 10 minutes later, Acting President described as unauthorized takeover of the National Assembly complex earlier today as a gross violation of constitutional order, rule of law and all acceptable notions of law and order.

The acting president in statement by Akande said “the unlawful act which was done without the knowledge of the Presidency is condemnable and completely unacceptable.

” By this statement, Professor Osinbajo is consequently assuring Nigerians that all persons within the law enforcement apparatus who participated in this travesty will be identified and subjected to appropriate disciplinary action.”

Car TalkThis Rolls-royce Costs $12.8 Million—and Took Four Years To Build by sunky97(op): 10:25am On Aug 07, 2018
The Sweptail is the most expensive Rolls-Royce ever built.

With most car’s ranging in the six-figures, Rolls-Royce has built a reputation for excellence since their founding in 1906. Which makes the news that the British luxury-car manufacturer recently unveiled their most expensive vehicle all the more exciting. Adding to the drama is the fact that the Sweptail, as the car is being called, is a one-off vehicle that took four years to create by hand, and features a full-length panoramic roof that culminates in a tail-like rear of the vehicle. In total, the custom-built car costs a whooping $12.8 million.

The Sweptail is a two-seat coupe that was the dream of a longtime Rolls-Royce customer. In 2013, the undisclosed male owner commissioned the car company to build a vehicle that would take on many of the aesthetics of the swept-tail Rolls-Royces’ of the 1920s and ’30s. Much of the clients love for the vehicles of that era came from his current passion for yachting. As such, the designers and engineers came up with a bespoke car that included an ample of amount of wood interiors, as well as a long, uninterrupted glass roof to enjoy the sky, much like from the deck of a yacht. Just to make the interior that much more glamorous, the team at Rolls-Royce added a button that, when pushed, deploys a chilled bottle of the owners favorite champagne along with two crystal flutes.

Rolls-Royce’s Latest Car Costs $12.8 Million—and Took Four Years to Build
The all-glass roof extends to the back in a design that pays homage to modern yachts as well as historic Rolls-Royce’s from the early 20th century.

James Lipman
The eight-figure car was unveiled at the Concorso d’Eleganza at Villa d’Este in Italy. Rolls-Royce CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös expressed his pride in designing the historic vehicle at the ceremony, “Sweptail is a truly magnificent car.

It exudes the romance of travel for its own sake, and immediately places ‘Sweptail’ in the pantheon of the world’s great intercontinental tourers…We are listening carefully to our most special customers and assessing their interest in investing in similar, completely exclusive masterpieces.”

SportsLebron James “ School” Where Students Get Free Bikes, Meals, And College Tuition by sunky97(op): 5:36am On Aug 05, 2018
Lebron James Public school Where Students Get Free Bikes, Meals, and College Tuition
On Monday, LeBron James opened I Promise school in his hometown of Akron, Ohio.
“As he has done for years, he continues to give back to the community that raised him.
The new public school, which is starting with 240 third and fourth graders and will continue expanding until it encompasses grades 1-8 in 2022, is focused on helping at-risk, inner-city students who are behind academically, as well as offering career and emotional support for their families.”

What’s Special About Lebron James’ I Promise School?

Forty-three staffers will help run the I Promise School — including not just teachers but also a principal, assistant principal, four intervention specialists, plus a tutor, English as a second language teacher, music instructor, and gym teacher, USA Today reports. Classrooms will hold 20 students per teacher.

The school is far from traditional school. Its lengthy school day runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., along with an extended school year that runs from July through May. During a seven-week summer session, the school will provide STEM-based camps. Students will spend time each day on social-emotional learning, and participate in a “supportive circle” after lunch aimed at helping them refocus on work, Cleveland.com reports.

Every day students will receive free breakfast, lunch, snacks and drinks.

They will have access to a fitness trainer. James says that, as a kid, he used his bicycle to explore different neighborhoods of Akron — so he gave one to every incoming student.

Since the school considers education to be not just for the pupil but for the whole family, it will offer GED classes and job placement assistance for parents and guardians. “It is about true wrap-around support, true family integration and true compassion,” Brandi Davis, I Promise principal and Akron native, told USA Today.

Students get one other notable benefit: If they successfully complete the school program and graduate from high school, James will cover their full tuition at the local public college, University of Akron.

It’s inspiring what one person can do.

You don’t have to be a billionaire to be a philanthropist.

It’s not all about money. It’s about giving of your Time, Talent, Treasure e.t.c

Lebron James has just shown us another way of impacting our world!

SportsStanton And Volanthen The British Divers Leading The Thai Cave Rescue Mission by sunky97(op): 11:26pm On Jul 08, 2018
Rick Stanton and John Volanthen, the pair who found the boys last Monday almost 10 days after they went missing.

Richard Stanton, left, and John Volanthen arrive in Mae Sai, Chiang Rai province in northern Thailand on July 3, 2018.

The path out is dangerous, with twists and turns and narrow passages. But Mr Stanton and Mr Volanthen have a lot of experience.

When authorities in Thailand were assembling a group of rescuers to search for a soccer team lost in a flooded cave, one of their first calls went to a retired firefighter and an IT consultant in England.

Rick Stanton and John Volanthen were the first to reach the 12 boys and their coach inside the Luang Nang Non Cave in Chiang Rai province on Monday.

It is their voices that can be heard talking to the boys and giving them calm reassurance in a dramatic video released by the Thai navy. They are working with Thai navy SEALs, who are leading the rescue operation.

Stanton, the retired firefighter from Coventry, and Volanthen, who does IT consulting work in Bristol, have years of experience in cave rescues and have helped map the Luang Nang Non Cave.

In 2010, they were involved in the attempted rescue of Eric Establie, a professional diver and caving expert from France.

Establie had been on a mission to map the Ardeche Gorge near Marseille in France, but a rock fall had blocked his exit.

Mr Stanton and Mr Volanthen were flown in by the RAF to help find Establie, and eight days after he went missing, they found his body 780 metres from the cave entrance.

“As soon as the French got in touch there was no question that I would not be going over,” Stanton said afterwards according to the Birmingham Mail.

BusinessInstagram Announces IGTV, A Standalone App For Longer Videos by sunky97(op): 1:13pm On Jun 21, 2018
Instagram today announced IGTV, a standalone app for watching long-form vertical video that will also have a tab inside the flagship app. When you log in to IGTV, it will automatically begin playing vertical videos from people you follow, along with personalized recommendations from elsewhere in Instagram. The app is now available on iOS and Android.

For original photography, video, stop-motion, and Instagram Stories from The Verge staff

Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom said the app was designed to make it easier to find and watch videos on the mobile phone. He noted that most video apps require you to search or browse through a directory — as opposed to television, where you simply turn it on and start watching. IGTV, on the other hand, will simply start playing video the moment you open it. Among other things, this “lean back” mode could make IGTV a powerful new place for Instagram to put ads.

IGTV will also allow creators to upload video directly to Instagram, a product manager said, representing an effort to turn the app into a home for mobile video to rival YouTube. Videos can be up to 10 minutes long to start, with larger accounts able to post hourlong videos. Over the long term, the company expects to let all users post videos of unlimited length, Systrom said.

There will be no ads on IGTV to start, but that would be “a reasonable place to end up,” Systrom said. He said there would be a revenue-sharing deal with partners eventually, but not to start.

Instagram’s introduction of 24-hour, ephemeral stories and and direct messaging features were designed to make it a primary communication channel for its users. IGTV represents an effort to expand in a different direction — toward connecting people toward their broader interests. Instagram would increasingly try to both marry personal relationships and interests, Systrom said. “You can’t really get that anywhere else — that unique mix of the two,” Systrom said.

At a morning event that had the look and feel of a late-night rave, Instagram executives announced the launch of the new app. Instagram stars at the event included celebrityFortnite streamer Ninja, Susie Shu (115,000 followers), Katie Austin (133,000 followers), Bryce Xavier (286,000 followers), Lauren Godwin (550,000 followers), Lauren Riihimaki (4.2 million followers), and Lele Pons (25 million followers).

The company also announced today that Instagram now has 1 billion users.

Pons announced that she would launch a new cooking show on IGTV, one of a number of popular creators who are expected to begin making series for the platform. Instagram will not pay her or any other creators to make shows, the company said. Pons said she would continue to post a weekly video on YouTube, effectively hedging her bets. “You never know what works,” she told reporters after the event.

Instagram’s push into video comes at the same time that its parent company, Facebook, is attempting a similar initiative. The company announced new game show features yesterdayas part of an effort to revive its moribund live video platform. Facebook is also funding news programming for its own video tab, known as Watch.

Instagram’s push into longer videos is also, in its own way, another jab at Snapchat, which has made similar deals in an effort to turn its Discover tab into a sought-out destination for younger viewers. None has been a breakout hit, but at least some publishers have been encouraged enough with the results to renew their deals. One reason: as they spend more time on their phones, younger demographics are getting harder to reach on television and radio.

The ultimate goal of both platforms is to strike a direct hit at YouTube, the default destination for most people who are searching for videos to consume. YouTube benefits from having a critical mass of creators, a mostly functional program for letting creators make money, and sophisticated algorithms that guide viewers to videos they’re likely to enjoy. (They also have an unfortunate tendency to push people toward extremist content.)

YouTube also benefits from its status as a true destination for video, rather than a tab in an app that people are used to thumbing through quickly to catch up with their friends. Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat are all searching for ways to get people to slow down and stop thumbing. On Snapchat, that initiative led to sensational headlines and titillating thumbnails.

Instagram is taking a different approach by creating a new app that is a destination for video in its own right. “When you watch longer video, you need a different context,” Systrom said. “We really wanted to separate those two so you could choose which adventure you wanted to go down.

SportsWe Were So Poor My Mother Borrowed Bread For Us To Eat – Lukaku's Touching Story by sunky97(op): 9:50pm On Jun 20, 2018
Tweet
In yet another heartbreaking and emotional true-life story shared online, Romelu Lukaku, revealed that his family was so poor in Belgium that they borrowed bread from the bakery to eat, and pay later.

Romelu Lukaku
Romelu Lukaku, who is currently representing Belgian at the ongoing FIFA World Cup in Russia, has shared a very emotional story about his childhood and poverty, saying that he watched milk fizzle out from his family’s lunch table at six, adding that when he was 12, he wore his father’s shoes to training, but promised to make it at 16.
Read his full emotional story below:
**************
“I remember the exact moment I knew we were broke. I can still picture my mum at the refrigerator and the look on her face.

I was six years old, and I came home for lunch during our break at school. My mum had the same thing on the menu every single day: Bread and milk. When you’re a kid, you don’t even think about it. But I guess that’s what we could afford.

Then this one day I came home, and I walked into the kitchen, and I saw my mum at the refrigerator with the box of milk, like normal. But this time she was mixing something in with it. She was shaking it all up, you know? I didn’t understand what was going on. Then she brought my lunch over to me, and she was smiling like everything was cool. But I realized right away what was going on.

She was mixing water in with the milk. We didn’t have enough money to make it last the whole week. We were broke. Not just poor, but broke.

My father had been a pro footballer, but he was at the end of his career and the money was all gone. The first thing to go was the cable TV. No more football. No more Match of the Day. No signal.

Then I’d come home at night and the lights would be shut off. No electricity for two, three weeks at a time.

Then I’d want to take a bath, and there would be no hot water. My mum would heat up a kettle on the stove, and I’d stand in the shower splashing the warm water on top of my head with a cup.

There were even times when my mum had to “borrow” bread from the bakery down the street. The bakers knew me and my little brother, so they’d let her take a loaf of bread on Monday and pay them back on Friday.

I knew we were struggling. But when she was mixing in water with the milk, I realized it was over, you know what I mean? This was our life.

I didn’t say a word. I didn’t want her to stress. I just ate my lunch. But I swear to God, I made a promise to myself that day. It was like somebody snapped their fingers and woke me up. I knew exactly what I had to do, and what I was going to do.

I couldn’t see my mother living like that. Nah, nah, nah. I couldn’t have that.

People in football love to talk about mental strength. Well, I’m the strongest dude you’re ever going to meet. Because I remember sitting in the dark with my brother and my mom, saying our prayers, and thinking, believing, knowing … it’s going to happen.

I kept my promise to myself for a while. But then some days I’d come home from school and find my mum crying. So I finally told her one day, “Mum, it’s gonna change. You’ll see. I’m going to play football for Anderlecht, and it’s going to happen soon. We’ll be good. You won’t have to worry anymore.”

I was six.

I asked my father, “When can you start playing professional football?”

He said, “Sixteen.”

I said, “O.K., sixteen then.”

It was going to happen. Period.

Let me tell you something — every game I ever played was a Final. When I played in the park, it was a Final. When I played during break in kindergarten, it was a Final. I’m dead-ass serious. I used to try to tear the cover off the ball every time I shot it. Full power. We weren’t hitting R1, bro. No finesse shot. I didn’t have the new FIFA. I didn’t have a Playstation. I wasn’t playing around. I was trying to kill you.

When I started growing taller, some of the teachers and the parents would be stressing me. I’ll never forget the first time I heard one of the adults say, “Hey, how old are you? What year were you born?”

I’m like, What? Are you serious?

When I was 11 years old, I was playing for the Lièrse youth team, and one of the parents from the other team literally tried to stop me from going on the pitch. He was like, “How old is this kid? Where is his I.D.? Where is he from?”

I thought, Where am I from? What? I was born in Antwerp. I’m from Belgium.

My dad wasn’t there, because he didn’t have a car to drive to my away games. I was all alone, and I had to stand up for myself. I went and got my I.D. from my bag and showed it to all the parents, and they were passing it around inspecting it, and I remember the blood just rushing through me … and I thought, “Oh, I’m gonna kill your son even more now. I was already going to kill him, but now I’m gonna destroy him. You’re gonna drive the boy home crying now.”

I wanted to be the best footballer in Belgian history. That was my goal. Not good. Not great. The best. I played with so much anger, because of a lot of things … because of the rats running around in our apartment … because I couldn’t watch the Champions League … because of how the other parents used to look at me.

I was on a mission.

When I was 12, I scored 76 goals in 34 games.

I scored them all wearing my dad’s shoes. Once our feet got to be the same size, we used to share.

One day I called up my grandfather — my mum’s dad. He was one of the most important people in my life. He was my connection back to Congo, where my mum and dad are from. So I was on the phone with him one day, and I said, “Yeah, I’m doing really well. I scored 76 goals, and we won the league. The big teams are noticing me.”

And usually, he always wanted to hear about my football. But this time it was strange. He said, “Yeah, Rom. Yeah, that’s great. But can you do me a favor?”

I said, “Yeah, what is it?”

He said, “Can you look after my daughter, please?”

I remember being so confused. Like, what’s Grandad on about?

I said, “Mum? Yeah, we’re cool. We’re O.K.”

He said, “No, promise me. Can you promise me? Just look after my daughter. Just look after her for me, O.K.?”

I said, “Yeah, Granddad. I got it. I promise you.”

Five days later he passed away. And then I understood what he really meant.

It makes me so sad to think about, because I just wish that he could have lived another four years to see me play for Anderlecht. To see that I kept my promise, you know? To see that everything was going to be O.K.

I told my mum that I would make it at 16.

I was late by 11 days.

May 24, 2009.

The playoff final. Anderlecht vs. Standard Liège.

Lukaku: To me, every game was a final.

That was the craziest day of my life. But we have to back up for a minute. Because at the start of the season, I was barely playing for the Anderlecht U-19s. The coach had me coming off the bench. I’m like, “How the hell am I going to sign a pro contract on my 16th birthday if I’m still on the bench for the U-19s?”

So I made a bet with our coach.

I told him, “I’ll guarantee you something. If you actually play me, I’m going to score 25 goals by December.”

He laughed. He literally laughed at me.

I said, “Let’s make a bet then.”

He said, “O.K., but if you don’t score 25 by December, you’re going to the bench.”

I said, “Fine, but if I win, you’re going to clean all the minivans that take the players home from training.”

He said, “O.K., it’s a deal.”

I said, “And one more thing. You have to make pancakes for us every day.”

He said, “O.K., fine.”

That was the dumbest bet that man ever made.

I had 25 by November. We were eating pancakes before Christmas, bro.

Let that be a lesson. You don’t play around with a boy who’s hungry!

I signed my pro contract with Anderlecht on my birthday, May 13. Went straight out and bought the new FIFA and a cable package. It was already the end of the season, so I was at home chilling. But the Belgian league was crazy that year, because Anderlecht and Standard Liege had finished tied on points. So there was a two-leg playoff to decide the title.

During the first leg, I’m at home watching on TV like a fan.

Then the day before the second leg, I get a phone call from the coach of the reserves.rld Cup 2018
“Hello?”

“Hello, Rom. What are you doing?”

“About to go play football in the park.”

“No, no, no, no, no. Pack your bags. Right now.”

“What? What did I do?”

“No, no, no. You need to get to the stadium right now. The first team wants you now.”

“Yo …. What?! Me?!”

“Yeah, you. Come now.”

I literally sprinted into my dad’s bedroom and was like, “Yo! Get your ass up right now! We gotta go, man!”

He’s like, “Huh? What? Go where?”

I’m like, “ANDERLECHT, MAN.”

I’ll never forget, I showed up to the stadium, and I like pretty much ran into the dressing room and the kitman said, “O.K., kid, what number do you want?”

And I said, “Give me number 10.”

The kitman said, “O.K., kid, what number do you want?” And I said, “Give me number 10.”
Hahahaha! I don’t know. I was too young to be scared I guess.

He was like, “Academy players have to take 30 and above.”

I said, “O.K., well, three plus six equals nine, and that’s a cool number, so give me 36.”

That night at the hotel, the senior players made me sing a song for them at dinner. I can’t even remember what I picked. My head was spinning.

The next morning, my friend literally knocked on the door of my house to see if I wanted to play football and my mum was like, “He’s out playing.”

My friend said, “Playing where?”

She said, “The final.”

We got off the bus at the stadium, and every single player walked in wearing a cool suit. Except me. I came off the bus wearing a terrible tracksuit, and all the TV cameras were right in my face. The walk to the locker room was like 300 meters. Maybe a three-minute walk. As soon as I put my foot in the locker room, my phone starts blowing up. Everybody had seen me on TV. I had 25 messages in three minutes. My friends were going crazy.

“Bro?! WHY ARE YOU AT THE GAME?!”

SportsWe Lack Creative Midfield Player – Okocha Reacts To Super Eagles’ Loss by sunky97(op): 6:49am On Jun 18, 2018

Jay Jay Okorocha reacted to the abysmal performance of the Super Eagles against Croatia at the ongoing 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Nigeria succumbed to a 2-0 defeat against Croatia after conceding a goal in each half in their opening 2018 Fifa World Cup encounter. Oghenkaro Etebo’s own goal in the first half and Luka Modric’s penalty after the restart condemned the Super Eagles to a loss at the Kaliningrad Stadium.
While analysing the match on SuperSport in South Africa, legendary dribbler Okorocha believes the team arrangement was far from perfect as there was no creative midfielder on the pitch.
He apparently laid the blame at the foot of the German coach, Gernot Rohr for what looked like an awful team arrangement which also affected the performance of midfield maestro, Mikel Obi and Arsenal’s Alex Iwobi who is also Okocha’s nephew.
“We didnt have a creative midfield player today. Mikel has been a great servant you know but I think his best position is sitting in front of the back four. We saw him at Chelsea. You know He had a wonderful career at Chelsea playing in that position.

And in our national team, I think at the moment, the most creative player that we have is Iwobi. Playing him on the right hand side in the national team, wjavascript:void(0);e are taking his strength away from him. He can play there in Arsenal because of the way they play, because of Ozil, he is a creative player.

And today the only reason why we lost this game is that we played our players in the wrong positions. We didnt get the best out of them”.he explained.

HealthHow True? Drinking Drinks Such As Coca Cola After Eating Mangoes Causes Death by sunky97(op):
According to a would-be warning that is circulating via social media, you should never drink aerated beverages such as Coca Cola after eating mangos because the combination of the two can kill you.

The message cites a case in which an Indian tourist in China died after eating mangos and then consuming Coca Cola straight after. It warns that aerated drinks and mangos combined can turn into a very potent poison that is ‘instantly capable of killing a human’.

However, the claims in the supposed warning are utter nonsense. Both mangos and coke are products that are consumed by a great many people all around the world every single day. And, they will very often be consumed together. Given the popularity of the two products, a great many people in many different locations would have died from consuming them if the poison claims were true.

Yet, there are no credible news or medical reports that support the claims that people have died after drinking coke and eating mangos. And, of course, if the claims were true, official warnings about consuming the products together would be widely publicised via food and drink labels and websites, government health advisories, and news reports all around the world.

There is no scientific basis to the claim that aerated soft drink and mangos can somehow magically combine to create a deadly poison. It seems likely that the callous prankster who launch this silly hoax simply made up the story.

It is quite similar to another recent hoax that falsely claims that consuming Mentos and Coke together leads to instant death from cyanide poisoning.

Sharing this warning will do nothing other than spread fear and alarm. If the hoax comes your way, do not share it on your networks. And, please let the sender know that the claims in the warning are untrue.

Christianity EtcYou Can’t Have Negative Mind And Expect Positive Life by sunky97(op): 8:56pm On May 27, 2018
You can’t have negative mind and expect positive life.

Change your mindset, change your life.

Be positive minded no matter what you are going through.

Despite Job’s predicament, he believed he will overcome and he overcame, the Bible recorded that his end was far greater than his beginning.
“So the LORD blessed the latter end of Job more than his beginning: for he had fourteen thousand sheep, and six thousand camels, and a thousand yoke of oxen, and a thousand she asses”.(Job 42:12)

Are you despondent or disappointed about happenings in your life, business, career and relationship?

You are not alone, Job was once like that. Job was positive, he saw what his friends, family and foes could not see, he saw the hand of God and God returned in multiple fold all that Job had lost.

Whatever you have lost (time, job, money, contract, friendship, parts of your health, relationship with God e.t.c) you can recover all only if you are positive about life.

Only if you can belief in yourself, only if you belief your future is great.

Only if you belief that your present position or predicament does not determine your final palace in life.

Only if you belief you are meant for greatness in life.

Always see positive side of life in every situation!

Make every second count, never waste anytime in negativity.

Start each day with positive affirmations like:

“Today is going to be great for me”
“I will be Favored today”
“I will pass that exam”
“I will get that Job today”
“That contract is for me”
“I am healed”
“I am favored”
“My husband/wife will locate me today”
“My path will lead to greatness today”

“At least there is hope for a tree: If it is cut down, it will sprout again, and its new shoots will not fail”…( Job 14:7)

It’s not over my dear!, there is hope when their is life

Foreign AffairsRetired English Teacher Corrects Letter From Trump & Sends It Back To White Hous by sunky97(op): 6:38am On May 27, 2018
A retired high school English teacher says a letter she received from President Trump would have barely earned passing marks, so she corrected the letter and sent it back to the White House.

Yvonne Mason, an Atlanta resident who retired last year after teaching middle and high school students in South Carolina for 17 years, corrected grammatical mistakes in the letter bearing Trump’s signature, including 11 instances of improper capitalization of words like “president” and “state.”

“If it had been written in middle school, I’d give it a C or C-plus,” Mason told South Carolina’s Greenville News. “If it had been written in high school, I’d give it a D.”

She did not attach a letter grade to the letter she sent back to the White House.

Mason acknowledges the letter was likely written by a staffer. She received it after penning a letter requesting that Trump meet individually with the families who lost loved ones in the Feb. 14 high school shooting in Parkland, Fla.

“When you get letters from the highest level of government, you expect them to be at least mechanically correct,” she told the newspaper.

“It’s stylistically appalling,” she added, comparing Trump’s writing to the “exquisite” letters she’s received from South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham‘s (R) office.

The teacher said the White House response did not address her request specifically.

Trump previously held a “listening session” with Parkland community members and the victims’ parents to discuss the prevention of school shootings and gun violence.

A man from Tanzania was compelled to report himself to the nearest police station after a bag he had stolen from an old woman refused to come down from his head.

It is not clear under what circumstances Frank Buhet stole the bag and what it contained.

The man reportedly told police that he made every effort within his powers to get the load off his head, including lying on the ground, but to no avail.

The story of Anaya Ellick, a 9-year-old girl born without hands shows that there is indeed an ability in every disability. It just takes the right mindset to see and do it.

Anaya doesn’t use prosthetic hands but has been honoured with a prestigous award for her skillful handwriting.

A third-grader in Chesapeake area of Virginia, United States, she won the 2018 Zaner-Bloser National Handwriting Contest, under the Nicholas Maxim category, an award that rewards outstanding manuscript and cursive skills among students.

In 2016, Anaya won the award for her print writing.

Growing up, her mother helped her form letters, but she soon learnt how to hold a pencil between her two arms to write and draw.

Although quiet and shy, Anaya always tried out things and believed she could do it and now, she is a role model to everyone.

“She’s really independent – from tying shoes, putting clothes, getting baths. It was always like ‘I can do it’. So, that just carried on over the years,” her father told News 3

The next thing Anaya is looking to tackle now is sports.

We hope this inspires …..

CultureIn This Village Young Girls Are Used As Mode Of Payment And For Debt Settlement by sunky97(op): 10:04am On May 10, 2018

A community in River State, where young girls are sold in exchange for food items or debt settlement have been exposed.

Channels TV reported that ‘Money Marriage’ is an age-long tradition of the Becheve tribe of Obanliku in Cross River State, as almost all family in the community are involved in it.

The girls are reportedly called ‘Money Woman’ or ‘Money Wife’ and are sometimes sold out even before they were born.

The Money Marriage culture does not in any way favor the money woman or wife. The moment a man shows interest in a girl, her immediate family and other relatives are free to visit the man and collect things from him.

“Anything offered them during their visit is given monetary value and recorded by their in-law (the man who is marrying the girl). If the mother is the greedy type, she’ll often visit her ‘in-law’ to get stuff,” Channels TV reported.

Where the man has made full payment, the girl is given out in marriage.

Aji Patience, a girl whose sister was sold at four years old said, she was given out for N2, 000.

Unfortunately, when the husband dies, his next-of-kin marries the girl and if she dies without giving birth to children, her parents are mandated to bring a replacement.

Victoria Tabang is a victim of this. After the death of her husband, she was expected to remain with his people.

“Even when I went to my people, they drove me away, saying I now belong elsewhere,” she told Channels TV.

Money women or wives are sold for as low as N10,000, few goats and pigs, tubers of yam, depending on the man’s bargain power. They are also not allowed to be educated.

“Money that the man give in my head (sic) was not much. It was N20,000 and one goat,” a money wife said.

Once a girl is sold out for Money Marriage, she is considered dead by her immediate family and warned never to return irrespective of how she is treated by her husband or his relatives.

FamilyLipton Yellow Label Is Giving Widows Across Nigeria A #reasontosmile by sunky97(op): 9:33pm On May 09, 2018
Becoming a widow in Nigeria is often followed by a fall into extreme poverty – a situation usually aggravated by widespread practice of property grabbing and sometimes, physical abuse. Consequently, they are subjected to food insecurity due to poverty or unemployment, failure to find basic and school necessities for their children, lack of shelter, difficulty in accessing working capital for small-scale businesses, and victimization by harmful cultural practices.

In many traditional settings, the death of a husband can put women at the risk of social segregation and the loss of the security and social status their partners would have provided. They are immediately banished to the fringe of society and suffer different forms of stigma and discrimination.

For any nation or society interested in fostering progressive development, it is important that citizens create a social climate conducive for collective achievement. Apart from the need to adopt a friendly culture that dignifies victims and recognizes their pain, widows need support systems that provide opportunities to reintegrate into society after the loss of their spouses.

If we are going to achieve this, everyone needs to understand that widows are extremely disadvantaged. In a country where culture and tradition are used as tool to oppress disadvantaged women, we have a collective responsibility to overcome these barriers with practical solutions to alleviate their poverty and helplessness. Either as a corporate imperative or individual responsibility, actions and decisions have to be taken to rehabilitate widows disenfranchised by poverty and unemployment.

Consider Lipton’s ‘Reason To Smile’, an initiative by Unilever Plc.’s leading tea brand which is aimed at supporting 1,000 Nigerian widows with necessary care packs and seed fund to start a business. Expected to be executed in states across Nigeria, the Lipton ‘Reasons to Smile’ campaign is also giving all concerned Nigerians the opportunity to get involved with one Lipton pack at a time, give widows a reason to smile and lighten their burden.

In many Nigerian communities where a lot of women are housewives, fully dependent on their husbands, it becomes a great challenge when such families lose their breadwinner and find it difficult to cater for themselves and their children. These women need to be given a helping hand – a lifeline to create a better future for themselves and their communities in general.

The challenges that widows in our communities and cities experience daily affects everyone. They are our mothers, sisters, friends, neighbours and more. They remain one of the most marginalized persons, a depressing reality that has dealt a blow to compassion and decorum in our society. The least we can do is to care for them and also provide them with opportunities for solutions – which is the objective of the Lipton brand.

Widows need be celebrated and encouraged. They are an integral part of our society and deserve as much respect and dignity as anyone else. As women and mothers, they are active members of the Nigerian society who contribute to national development. We cannot allow them to be victimized and subjected to untold hardships just because they lost a loved one, Lipton is saying we have the power to lighten their burden and put smiles on their faces.

As a general rule, "smaller" is used for size, whereas "lesser" is used for quantity.

Lesser can only be used attributively. So you can say: I earn a lesser salary than my wife, but not: My salary is lesser than my wife's.
HealthHow To Spot The Warning Signs Of Depression by sunky97(op): 4:38pm On May 04, 2018
Tweet
Everyone feels blue now and then. It’s part of life. But if your loved one no longer enjoys activities that they once liked, they may have a more serious problem. Being consistently depressed can change the way you think and feel. This is called clinical depression.

Being “down in the dumps” for a prolonged period of time is not a normal part of getting older, but it is a common problem that may require medical help. For most people, depression will get better with treatment. “Talk” therapy, medication, and other treatment methods can ease the pain of depression.

As we age, we all face problems that could cause anyone to feel depressed. Seniors often experience a great deal of hardship as their lives, abilities and social circles change. Many deal with friends and loved ones passing away. They may have a tough time getting used to retirement and feel lonely or purposeless. Chronic illnesses can make seniors feel as if they have lost control over their life.

It’s normal to feel sad when these things happen. However, after a period of feeling down, most people usually adjust and regain their emotional balance. Someone who is suffering from clinical depression doesn’t get over those feelings. Without help, the symptoms might last for weeks, months or even years. The good news is that people who are depressed usually feel better with the right treatment.

Warning Signs of Depression
If a loved one exhibits several of these symptoms, and they last for more than two weeks, encourage them to make an appointment with their doctor.

An “empty” feeling
Ongoing sadness and anxiety
Tiredness or lack of energy
Loss of interest or pleasure in everyday activities, including sex
Sleep problems, including trouble getting to sleep, very early morning waking, and sleeping too much
Eating more or less than usual
Crying too often or too much
Aches and pains that don’t go away when treated
Difficulty focusing, remembering or making decisions
Feeling guilty, helpless, worthless or hopeless
Irritability
Thoughts of death or suicide
A suicide attempt
If you are a family member, friend, or health care provider of an older person, watch for these clues. Sometimes depression can hide behind a smiling face. A depressed person may appear to feel better or even normal while interacting with others. The symptoms may even seem to go away. But, when someone is very depressed, they usually come back.

Don’t ignore the warning signs. If left untreated, serious depression can lead to suicide. Listen carefully if someone of any age complains about being depressed or says people don’t care about their wellbeing. That person may be indirectly asking for help.

What Causes Depression?
There is no one cause of depression. For some people, a single event can bring on the illness, such as a death in the family or a serious medical diagnosis. For some people, changes in brain chemistry can affect moods and cause depression. Sometimes those under a lot of stress, like caregivers, can feel depressed. Others become depressed for no clear reason, but that does not diminish the gravity of their condition.

Health Issues Can Cause Depression
People with serious illnesses, such as cancer, dementia, heart disease, stroke, or Parkinson’s disease, often struggle with depression. They worry about how their condition will change their lives. They might be tired and unable to deal with things that make them sad. Treatment for depression helps them manage both emotional and physical symptoms and improves their quality of life.

Genetics, too, can play a role. Studies show that depression may run in families. Children of depressed parents may be at a higher risk for the condition. Furthermore, depression tends to be a disorder that occurs more than once. Many older people who have been depressed in the past are at an increased risk of experiencing symptoms again.

Depression in Seniors Is Often Overlooked
There are many reasons why depression in older people is often missed or untreated. The signs are much more varied for seniors than younger individuals, making it tricky to recognize the condition and differentiate it from others. For example, depression can appear as increased tiredness, grumpiness or irritability, all of which are stereotypically associated with the aging process. Additionally, confusion and attention problems caused by depression can sometimes look like Alzheimer’s disease or other brain disorders. Mood changes and signs of depression can even be caused by medicines older people may take for arthritis, high blood pressure or heart disease.

It can be difficult for doctors to detect depression in older individuals. A physician who specializes in meeting seniors’ unique health needs, such as a geriatrician, can more easily diagnose and treat complex issues like depression.

Education20 Of The Most Common Grammatical Errors We All Need To Stop Making by sunky97(op): 11:55pm On May 01, 2018
Tweet
It’s not easy. Words and phrases that sound fine in your head can look like gibberish when written down — that is, if you even realize you made a mistake in the first place. It’s easy for little grammar mistakes to slip by, especially when you’re self-editing.
But how do you prevent grammatical errors if you’re not even aware you’re making them?

Well, you can start by reading through this post to see which common grammar mistakes resonate with you the most. (It’s okay — we’re all guilty of at least one.) Make a mental note to avoid that mistake in the future, or heck, just bookmark this page to remind yourself of them over and over (and over) again.

20 Common Grammar Mistakes to Check For in Your Writing
1) They’re vs. Their vs. There
One’s a contraction for “they are” (they’re), one refers to something owned by a group (their), and one refers to a place (there). You know the difference among the three — just make sure you triple check that you’re using the right ones in the right places at the right times.
Correct Usage: They’re going to love going there — I heard their food is the best!

2) Your vs. You’re
The difference between these two is owning something versus actually being something:

You made it around the track in under a minute — you’re fast!

How’s your fast going? Are you hungry?

See the difference? “Your” is possessive and “you’re” is a contraction of “you are.” Again, if you’re having trouble keeping them straight, try doing another grammar check before you hit publish.

3) Its vs. It’s
This one tends to confuse even the best of writers. “Its” is possessive and “it’s” is a contraction of “it is.” Lots of people get tripped up because “it’s” has an ‘s after it, which normally means something is possessive. But in this case, it’s actually a contraction.

Do a control + F to find this mistake in your writing. It’s really hard to catch on your own, but it’s a mistake everyone can make.

4) Incomplete Comparisons
This one drives me up a wall when I see it in the wild. Can you see what’s wrong with this sentence?

Our car model is faster, better, stronger.

Faster, better, stronger … than what? What are you comparing your car to? A horse? A competitor’s car? An older model?

When you’re asserting that something should be compared to something else, make sure you always clarify what that something else is. Otherwise, it’s impossible for your readers to discern what the comparison actually means.

5) Referring to a Brand or an Entity as “They”
A business ethics professor made me aware of this mistake. “A business is not plural,” he told our class. “Therefore, the business is not ‘they.’ It’s ‘it.'”

So, what’s the problem with this sentence?

To keep up with their changing audience, Southwest Airlines rebranded in 2014.

The confusion is understandable. In English, we don’t identify a brand or an entity as “he” or “she” — so “they” seems to make more sense. But as the professor pointed out, it’s just not accurate. A brand or an entity is “it.”

To keep up with its changing audience, Southwest Airlines rebranded in 2014.

It might seem a little strange at first, but once you start correctly referring to a brand or entity as “it,” the phrasing will sound much more natural than “they.”

6) Possessive Nouns
Most possessive nouns will have an apostrophe — but where you put that apostrophe can be confusing. Here are a few general rules to follow:

If the noun is plural, add the apostrophe after the s. For example: the dogs’ bones.
If the noun is singular and ends in s, you should also put the apostrophe after the s. For example: the dress’ blue color.
On the other hand, if the noun is singular and doesn’t end in an s, you’ll add the apostrophe before the s. For example: the lizard’s tail.
Simple, right? If you want a deeper dive into the rules of possessive nouns, check out this website.

7) Affect vs. Effect
This one is another one of my pet peeves. Most people confuse them when they’re talking about something changing another thing.

When you’re talking about the change itself — the noun — you’ll use “effect.”

That movie had a great effect on me.

When you’re talking about the act of changing — the verb — you’ll use “affect.”

That movie affected me greatly.

cool Me vs. I
Most people understand the difference between the two of these, until it comes time for them to use one in a sentence. They’ll say something like:

When you get done with that lab report, can you send it to Bill and I?

But that’s wrong.

Try taking Bill out of that sentence — it sounds weird, right? You would never ask someone to send something to “I” when he or she is done. The reason it sounds weird is because “I” is the object of that sentence — and “I” should not be used in objects. In that situation, you’d use “me.”

When you get done with that lab report, can you send it to Bill and me?

Much better.

9) To vs. Too
We’ve all accidentally left the second “o” off of “too” when texting in a hurry. But in case the mistake goes beyond that, let’s review some usage rules.

“To” is typically used before a noun or verb, and describes a destination, recipient, or action. Take these examples:

My friend drove me to my doctor’s appointment. (Destination)

I sent the files to my boss. (Recipient)

I’m going to get a cup of coffee. (Action)

“Too,” on the other hand, is a word that’s used as an alternative to “also” or “as well.” It’s also used to describe an adjective in extremes. Have a look:

My colleague, Sophia Bernazzani, writes for the HubSpot marketing blog, too.

She, too, is vegan.

We both think it’s too cold outside.

You might have noticed that there’s some interesting comma usage where the word “too” is involved. We’ll cover commas a bit more later, but when you’re using the word “too” to replace “also” or “as well,” the general rule is to use a comma both before and after. The only exception occurs when “too” is the last word in the sentence — then, follow it with a period.

10) Do’s and Don’ts
I’m not talking about the do’s and don’ts of grammar here — I’m talking about the actual words: “do’s” and “don’ts.” They look weird, right? That’s because of two things:

There’s an apostrophe in one to make it plural … which typically isn’t done, and
The apostrophes aren’t put in the same place in both words.
Unfortunately, it’s AP Style, so we just have to live with it. It’s a hot angle for content formats, so I wouldn’t shy away from using it. But when you’re checking your writing for grammatical errors, just remember that the apostrophes should be in different places.

Note: There are different schools of thought about how to punctuate this one depending on what style guide/usage book you’re using. The Chicago Manual of Style, for instance, recommends “dos” and “don’ts.” The important thing is to be consistent and stick to one style guide, whether it’s AP Style, Chicago, or your own house style guide.

11) i.e. vs. e.g.
Confession: I never remember this rule, so I have to Google it every single time I want to use it in my writing. I’m hoping that by writing about it here, the trend will stop.

Many people use the terms interchangeably when trying to elaborate on a point, but each one means something different: “i.e.” roughly means “that is” or “in other words,” while “e.g.” means “example given” or “for example.” The former is used to clarify something you’ve said, while the latter adds color to a story through an example.

12) Peek vs. Peak vs. Pique
This mistake is another one I often see people make, even if they know what they mean.

Peek is taking a quick look at something — like a sneak peek of a new film.
Peak is a sharp point — like the peak of a mountain.
And pique means to provoke or instigate — you know, like your interest.
If you’re going to use one in your writing, stop and think for a second — is that the right “peek” you should be using?

13) Who vs. That
This one is tricky. These two words can be used when you’re describing someone or something through a phrase like, “Lindsay is a blogger who likes ice cream.” When you’re describing a person, be sure to use “who.”

When you’re describing an object, use “that.” For example, you should say, “Her computer is the one that overheats all the time.” It’s pretty simple, but definitely something that gets overlooked frequently.

14) Who vs. Whom vs. Whose vs. Who’s
Whoa. This one looks like a bit of a doozy. Let’s break it down, shall we?

“Who” is used to identify a living pronoun. If you asked, “Who ate all of the cookies?” the answer could be a person, like myself (“I did”), or another living being (“the dog did”).

Hey, both are realistic scenarios in my world.

“Whom” is a little trickier. It’s usually used to describe someone who’s receiving something, like a letter — “To whom will it be addressed?” But it can also be used to describe someone on the receiving end of an action, like in this sentence:

Whom did we hire to join the podcast team?

“Whose” is used to assign ownership to someone. See if you can spot the error in this question:

Who’s sweater is that?

Because the sweater belongs to someone, it should actually be written this way:

Whose sweater is that?

“Who’s,” on the other hand, is used to identify a living being. It’s a contraction for “who is” — here’s an example of how we might use it in a sentence here in Boston:

Who’s pitching for the Red Sox tonight?

See the difference? “Whose” is used to figure out who something belongs to, whereas “who’s” is used to identify someone who’s doing something.

HealthDoctors Perform World’s First Penis, Scrotum Transplant! by sunky97(op): 7:10pm On Apr 28, 2018
Doctors at Johns Hopkins University said Monday they have performed the world’s first total penis and scrotum transplant on a US military serviceman who was wounded in Afghanistan.

The 14-hour operation took place on March 26, and was performed by a team of nine plastic surgeons and two urologic surgeons.

“We are optimistic that he will regain near-normal urinary and sexual functions following a full recovery,” W.P. Andrew Lee, professor and director of plastic and reconstructive surgery at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, told reporters on a conference call.

The patient was severely injured by a blast from an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan several years ago, Lee said.

The entire penis, scrotum without testicles and the partial abdominal wall came from a deceased donor.

“It’s a real mind-boggling injury to suffer; it is not an easy one to accept,” said a statement from the recipient, who asked to remain anonymous.

“When I first woke up, I felt finally more normal.”

He is now up and walking around, and is expected to be released from hospital this week.

The man lost his testicles in the explosion and did not get them restored as part of his transplant.

“The testicles were not transplanted because we had made a decision early in the program to not transplant germline tissue, that is to say not transplant tissue that generates sperm because this would raise a number of ethical questions,” said JHU plastic surgeon Damon Cooney.

“In particular, the ability of the recipient of the transplant to have children would result in genetic material being transmitted from the donor of the transplanted tissue to the recipient’s offspring,” Cooney added.

“And we just felt there were too many unanswered ethical questions with that.”

Doctors said they are hopeful he will be able to urinate with his penis in the coming weeks, and that he will eventually regain enough sensation to achieve an erection.

The patient retained his prostate gland in the blast, but since he lost his testicles, he will not be able to ejaculate.

The extent of his sexual function will not be known for about six months, doctors said.

The first penis transplant in the world took place in China in 2006, but it was later removed due to “a severe psychological problem of the recipient and his wife,” doctors said.

Only four penis transplants have ever been done successfully, including the one announced Monday, doctors said.

Two have been done in South Africa, the nation that achieved the first such successful surgery in 2015. The United States performed its first successful penis transplant in 2016.
