Politics › Fashola Defends Lastma Illegal Operations - Tries To Justify Extortion by Sunofgod(op): 9:11pm On Sep 22, 2011
Lagos (WorldStage Newsonline)-- Though Lagos State governor Babatunde Fashola on Thursday said that he was yet to read the content of the judgement of the Federal High Court that declared illegal the power of Lagos State Traffic Management Agency (LASTMA) to impose fines on traffic offenders as well as the law that set up the agency in the state, he insisted that road traffic is a municipal matter in which the state government has residual authority to make residual legislation.

While responding to questions from journalists at the VIP lounge of Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos, Fashola added that “all over the world, there is usually provision for either the summary payment for crime or the option of a trial and I think this is what exists really. If you can not go for a trial, you can say you want to pay a fine.

"I've not read the judegment and the only information I have about the judegment is from the press, clearly, that is not a legal interpretation of the judgment. Road traffic is a municipal matter in which the state goverment clearly has the residual authority to make legislation. Of course you will understand that all over the world, there is usually provision for either the summary payment of crime or the option of a trial and I think this is what exists really. If you can not go for a trial, you can say you want to pay a fine. And I think that is the ambit of which we have been operating and those who insist on being taken to court, obviously are being taken to court. But, as I said, I’ve not read the judgement and therefore, it may well be the headline news that the media has used to report a story."

The governor however called on all to see the good work the traffic management agency was doing in the state rather than looking at the challenges before them, saying its introduction had helped in the employment of over 5,000 youths in the state.

"Coincidentally yesterday, I was also with LASTMA in part of our mentoring civil responsibility training. Whether we like it or not, until a foreseeable future, LASTMA is a local solution to a unique traffic problem and in other jurisdiction where you have efficient traffic light and all of that. We have used a local challenge to create an opportunity for almost 5, 000 people who are working, showing dignity of labour, staying in the sun and the rain working for all of us.

“So, let not be in a hurry to challenge the LASTMA. I don’t think that is what we need, what we need is to keep the model, sustain and develop it. If it has rough edges, we trim it off and LASTMA like every innovation of man is always subject to improvement, re-modification and I think that is what is important for us to carry along now. The condemnation of the agency, I don’t think will take us there."

The governor who also declared that he was not yet satisfied with the operations of the traffick management agency in Lagos State because they were yet to meet the standard expected of them said: "I am never satisfied even with my own performance. I continue to raise the standards of performance every time. That is the way we are made. We have done a lot of things that even you have acknowledged, but the thing is that we will not rest on our oars, we will continue to set new standards and if we are satisfied with what we have done, which is commendable, you see keeping Lagos traffic moving with electricity, traffic light. It is a miracle on its own and we must commend those doing it. But we will continue to move higher and that is why they have been in training for almost eight weeks. I just approve another training that they will start. We train them at different levels to improve their service delivery. We will continue with them at least during my own tenure."

On the 10 years master plan for Alimosho area, the governor said though buildings and structures were not pulled down in some of the areas where such development plans had earlier taken place, the government would not hesitate to pull down any structure that may obstruct the master plan in the area.

"Alimosho is one of the eight towns that we are master planning from which we will create a regional plan for Lagos. One of them is Lekki, Ikoyi/Victoria Island, Lagos Mainland comprising Oto, Iddo to Oshodi back through Orile to Ijora, another one is Ikorodu. There is Badagry and Ikeja master plan as well. And we didn’t pull down the buildings in these areas when we are working there.

“It is to access what has taken place and what we need to add. We need to plan for 15, 20 years, where we will build the rail track to manage transport, school, hospitals and others. We are to modify what exists. But if they are standing on illegal places, I’m sorry, they will have to go."

On the tenancy law and exemption of some areas in the state, Fashola who said a wider forum to discuss the issue would soon be convened, however hinted that the contributions of the government , landlord and tenants in the discussion on the issue would be very important if the issue of rising cost of living which is traced to high cost of rent is to be addressed.

“We must understand that this is not the first time the tenancy law is being amended. It has been amended in many rent tribunals and so on even since when I was a child. I will speak to the details on the tenancy law at a future date. The important is that is not my voice alone that is important here, there is a voice of the citizens, landlords and tenants. That is why we are being led by the Attorney General. It is an issue of law. At a later date, I will speak on some of the issues.”

The governor said landlord and tenancy laws was part of the state long term strategy for housing for the general public. He said the state as erroneously expressed was not to regulate prices of housing. He insisted that landlords had nothing to lose if they collect their rents annually.

His words: "But it is important that we have made the landlord and tenant law is part of our long term strategy for housing for the general public. That law is not a substitute for building houses, it is not as some people have expressed opinion that how can we regulate prices when it is demand and supply that determines this. We understand this. We are not regulating the prices of housing. What we are regulating is the unequal relationship power where prices of houses that are already high are being compounded in multiples. If you continue to do that, if as a trader, I pay a three years rent, it means I will use the money I would have used to start business, I will use it to pay you rent. That is why things are expensive in this country. These are the things that drive our people to desperation and we have not been able to curb corruption in this country. The landlords lose nothing if they collect their rents year in year out. "

Politics › Corrupt Nigerians Should Be Killed - Chief Justice by Sunofgod(op): 9:08pm On Sep 22, 2011
Let's Kill Corrupt Nigerians - Chief Justice Of Nigeria

Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) designate Dahiru Musdapher yesterday canvassed implementation of a death sentence for corrupt officials even as he accused state governors of frustrating the independence of judiciary in the country.

Musdapher who spoke when he appeared before the Senate insisted that for corruption to be minimized in the country a capital punishment must be meted out to offenders. He was confirmed by the lawmakers for the office.

He said the judiciary was ready to commence the enforcement of capital punishment for corrupt persons. The CJN argued that capital punishment for anybody who is involved in corruption would help in the fight against corruption in the land.

Musadapher who appeared before the Senate for screening also called for the review of the law governing Nigeria Judicial Council(NJC) stressing that the law was obsolete. He complained of high number of appeal cases pending at the supreme court. He asked the senate to accelerate the review of the Act to limit the number of cases at the Supreme Court.

The CJN maintained that there is need for the review of the Nigeria Judicial Council law for greater performance, as he vowed to reposition the judiciary for better performance in the country.

Asked whether the Judiciary is Independent, Musadapher said" By and large, the judiciary is independent in this country, probably here and there you may find some odd things going on, but by and large we try to do the best that we can.

"But the problems has to do with the problems with state governments in relation to section 121 (3) of the Constitution dealing with the statutory that are given to the state, is often not transmitted to the heart of the courts in the states.

"Sometimes there are problems in the state of getting their due share of what has been granted them by the state governments. We are talking with government to please comply with the Constitutional provision and give the judiciary their dues .

"I want to have better judiciary within the time available to me, I want to call stakeholders meeting. We will do the best thing we can do so that we can restore public confidence and people can be happy that we have a good judiciary that is alive to its responsibility."

Speaking on corruption in the country, Musdapher said any step taken towards reducing the state of corruption would be considered. He however referred the issue to the legislators, noting that capital punishment for serious crimes operate in most countries of the world. He also blamed some of the delays in accessing court judgment on the numerous petitions that judges have to work on.

on the number of cases at the supreme court, the Chief Justice of the Nigeria said:"The truth of the matter is that there should be limitations to the number of appeals coming to the Supreme Court. The cases are there, we sit every day, hear about 20 to 30 cases and then, judge 20 to 30 cases, the amount of work done is too much, that is why it is urgent that constitution is amended to reduce the number of petitions coming to the Supreme Court."

On the power to appoint the Chief Justice, he said the Constitution confers power on the President to do so. "He can pick and chose anybody that the constitution qualifies but NJC procedures have to be followed before the appointment can come true. Some time, the president can appoint but sometime, he can bring it to the senate for confirmation." On the underperformance of Judges, although, the Chief

On the appointment of Judges, he said: "Rules for appointment of Judges have been with us since the establishment of NJC and I think it is due for amendment. We are calling on the stakeholders to come with us and consider the amendment of that law so that appointment would be well defined."

Politics › Un Approves Seat For Libya’s Rebels; Boko Haram May Be Next To Get A Seat? by Sunofgod(op): 5:38pm On Sep 17, 2011
The United Nations has approved a resolution in a show of support for Libya's National Transitional Council. The pledges range from easing sanctions to assets unfreezing – as well as a seat in the UN General Assembly.

The General Assembly welcomed Libya’s National Transitional Council to the international body in its Friday gathering in New York. Despite the NTC not controlling the entire countryyet, the rebels’ council will be able to adopt their representative function as soon as next week at a UN ministerial meeting.

A special UN Support Mission to Libya for an initial period of three months was approved by the UN Security Council. The diplomats refer to it as a “political operation”: the mission would give advice on restoring security and law, but also concentrate on helping the transitional government organize elections and write a new constitution.

This decision was unanimously welcomed by all the Security Council members, including the Russian envoy to the UN, Vitaly Churkin, who said it was the UN’s responsibility to help create a law-and-order system in the country to put an end to the chaos caused by the full-scale civil war. Churkin stressed that the current situation in Libya was a result of the failure to properly implement UN Resolution 1973 and protect civilians.

The no-fly zone over Libya will not be lifted, but will remain under review, says the new resolution. Though a ban on flights by Libyan civil aircraft will be lifted, Russia pushed for a quick abolishment of all the restrictions in Libya’s airspace.

“It is important that the council considers lifting the no-fly zone over Libya, particularly as this no-fly zone is being violated arbitrarily," Russia’s ambassador to the UN, Vitaly Churkin, told the gathering. "In view of the new reality on the ground, maintaining the no-fly zone no longer makes sense. Its lifting must be part of the international community’s efforts to address the aftermath of the Libya crisis.”

But some economic sanctions will be pulled back, releasing the billions of dollars belonging to Gaddafi’s regime. Thus, the assets of two major Libyan oil companies will be unfrozen and sanctions against several prominent financial institutions, including the Central Bank of Libya, softened.

The asset freeze and travel ban against Colonel Gaddafi and key family members and regime supporters will be retained, reports the Associated Press.

The arms embargo remains a stumbling block. Russia insists on lifting the ban on small arms supplies to Libya to protect UN personnel and diplomats, but the French and British envoys have not made any concrete propositions on that matter. Nevertheless, the embargo was modified to allow the new Libyan authorities to buy arms "intended solely for security or disarmament assistance."

The UN Security Council pledging to turn Libya into a democratic state would benefit the average Libyan, says Carmen Russell-Sluchansky, a host and analyst at the Voice of Russia radio station. But the analyst believes now that Muammar Gaddafi and his military machine are out, it will be hard for the country to achieve unity in a democratic manner.

Crime › Man Survives Attack By ‘assassins’ Sent By Wife by Sunofgod(op): 5:29pm On Sep 17, 2011
For 43-year-old Vincent Omeje, this was not what he bargained for when he tied the knots with his wife, Chidera twelve years ago. The Nsukka, Enugu State- born trader was attacked by five armed men who stormed his apartment at No. 10, Awka-Etiti Street, Comfort Obot, Kirikiri, Lagos and gave him a beaten of his life. In fact, his attackers left him to die from serious injuries he sustained thereafter.

He was however lucky as his they left him when they thought he was dead. Shockingly, the man who led the five armed attackers to his home, was the younger brother to his wife, and he allegedly ordered his goons to snuff life out of his in-law.

Narrating his ordeal to Crime Guard from his hospital bed, Mr. Omeje said; “It started early this month when I returned from a trip to Abuja and when I got home, I discovered that my wife had allowed her siblings into our home and they were not ready to leave any sooner.

After waiting for some days for them to pack and leave back to their homes, I realized that they were not even ready to go. So, I was left with no other option than to ask them to leave.

But that wasn’t quite easy, my wife and her sisters started raining all manners of abuses and profanities on me. Their father also called in from the village threatening to deal with me even if I ran to Nsukka, my home town. I sent my in-laws away because they didn’t tell me before coming to my house and it was improper for them to jump into my house with out my consent.

But while I was still dealing with these issues, my wife’s younger brother, Ogechi Erigbue, called and asked how he could see me. I told him I was on my way home and he should meet me there if he wants to see me.

When I got home, he called again, I told him I was home and he could come. Then he came and sat in the sitting room and when I met him and I asked what he wanted, surprisingly, he told me to my face that he was sent by his parents and siblings to deal with me.

Before I could ask what their reason was, about five men jumped into my apartment and immediately one of them holding a machete struck it at my face and I slumped on the ground, and blood was gushing out furiously from my face.”

Continuing he said; “These people did not stop at that, they kept on hitting me with the machete all over my body and my little daughter who was the only one at home was crying seriously.

When they continued with the beating, even while I was on the ground, I pretended as if I was dead and I laid still. They felt satisfied and ran away. When I was sure they had gone, I crawled out of my apartment and started shouting for help. Some neighbors who heard my voice ran out and offered some assistance.

First they took me to the police station, where I made my report and later on, they brought me to the hospital.

And while in the hospital, I was told that my wife came to check if I was still alive and she went home and called her brother, informing him that I was still alive and he should leave the state immediately.

I was also told that she had changed all the keys in our shop where we sell food stuffs and she also hired vehicle to park away all our properties from my house. However, the Police at Kirikiri swung into action and succeeded in arresting her.

They also were able to stop them from making use of the towing van she intended using to remove my car. This is not the first time I have been attacked by either my wife or her siblings. We have been married for over 12 years and we have three children.

But my wife and her siblings have always wanted me dead because of the progress in our business. I am sure she had planned to eliminate me so that she and her siblings will take over all our properties. All her siblings have no means of livelihood

. They all depend solely on her. Even my brother in-law who led the attackers into my house also does not have a job. Sincerely, I was tired of all this and I needed to put a stop to it. That alone has made them attack me severally”.

Meanwhile, police sources at the kirikiri station, told Crime Guard that they have arrested the wife, Chidera Omeje.

According to sources, “we started trailing her after we got the report. We went to her shop and discovered that she had locked it with a new key and we also learnt that she was trying to park out of the house with her properties and the husband’s car. We laid siege around the house and succeeded in arresting her.”

Politics › Fg (Okonjo-iweala) Orders Clampdown On Tax Evaders by Sunofgod(op): 4:07pm On Sep 17, 2011
By Kingsley Omonobi, Chris Ochayi & Caleb Anyansina,  Abuja
The Federal Executive Council, FEC, Friday, at an extraordinary session presided over by President Goodluck Jonathan ordered the Federal Inland Revenue Service, FIRS, to go after notorious tax evaders across the country that are owing government a whooping sum of over N170bn over the years.

The special FEC meeting was packaged by the President to deliberate on a benchmark for the 2012 budget and other sundry matters for the 2012-2015 medium term fiscal framework.

Briefing State House Correspondents at the end of the meeting, Minister of Information, Mr. Labaran Maku, said that following that approval of the FEC, the FIRS is expected to invoke the necessary tax laws in the country to recover the sum from the debtors that include individuals and corporate organisations.

He said the FEC believed that the huge sum ought to be in the federation account and be expended on national development.

The Coordinating Minister for the Economy and Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, who buttressed Maku’s point, said that the decision to back the FIRS to recover the debts was one of the ways the government would raise revenue and block leakages.

She however regretted that the individuals and corporate organisations failed to pay the huge sum despite persistent demand by the FIRS; saying that out of the N170bn debt, N131bn is still under discussion to make sure that both parties agree while agreement has been reached on about N22bn.

She explained that the government would not hesitate to publish names of the tax evaders in national newspapers if they failed to offset their debts.

“Every single billion naira of resources matter, so we need to go after them. We are also going to go after Internally Generated Revenues in many parastatals to try and increase their contributions to the budget,” saying that the ultimate goal, is to diversify and grow the budget.”

Okonjo-Iweala  explained that the 2012 budget which is expected to be presented to the National Assembly in November would be based on $75 per barrel of oil with the expectation that 2.48m barrels would be produced per day by 2012; noting that the figure is expected to increase to about 2.6m barrels by 2015.

The minister also said that the government was aiming a realistic Gross Domestic Product growth rate of between seven to eight per cent as well as a single digit inflation; adding that it is the desire of government to change the direction and structure of budget by reducing deficit.

“We are trying to make sure that we stay within the three per cent fiscal deficit that is in the Fiscal Responsibility Act. We will also try and trend it down over the next four years,” stressing that one sure way of doing this, is to reduce recurrent expenditure which currently stands at 74 per cent to about 72 per cent in 2012 and below 70 per cent in 2015.

Besides, she noted that having identified that a fair share of the recurrent expenditure goes to personnel, the government would intensify efforts aimed at weeding out ghost workers and pensioners through the use of biometrics.

The minister also disclosed the desire of the Federal Government to gradually increase capital spending from between 25 and 27 per cent now, to 32 per cent by 2015, noting that the government also intended to keep reducing domestic borrowing.

While saying that N862bn was borrowed in 2010, the minister said that the government planned to reduce the figure to below N800bn and keep reducing it so that the nation could have a sustainable domestic borrowing situation.

Okonjo-Iweala said 55 per cent of the 2011 budget has so far been implemented, while the rest, would be accelerated to meet the December 31, 2011 date of the end of the fiscal year; that one of the underlying factors of the 2012 budget was to complete uncompleted projects.

She itemised the priorities of the budget to include works, power, agriculture, Information and Communication Technology, housing, manufacturing, education, health, security and job creation among others.

Maku and Okonjo-Iweala were joined at the briefing by the Minister of State for Finance,

Dr. Yerima Ngama; and the Director General of the Budget Office of the Federation, Dr. Bright Okogu

Politics › Libyan Crisis: Reps To Summon Foreign Affairs Minister by Sunofgod(op): 8:35pm On Sep 16, 2011
ABUJA – Worried by reports of attacks on Nigerians and other black Africans in Libya following the overthrow of the former Libyan leader, Mouamar Ghaddafi, the House of Representatives yesterday resolved to summon the Minister of Foreign Affairs to brief members on measures taken to protect Nigerians living there.

Similarly, the House also resolved to organise a public hearing to determine why the country’s road networks nationwide have remained in deplorable conditions despite the creation of the Federal Road Maintenance Agency.

Adopting a motion sponsored by Abubakar Momoh, ACN Edo, on the war in Libya and the need to evacuate Nigerians still trapped in the war torn country, the House noted that there was the need for the minister to brief the members on the actions being taken by the ministry to ensure that Nigerians in that country are safe.

Momoh noted that despite the early recognition of the National Transition Council by the Nigerian government, there are reported cases of Nigerians being hauled into detention in their hundreds in the emerging xenophobia in the North African country against black Africans, many of whom were alleged to be mercenaries employed by the former Gaddafi Regime.

According to him, recent reports indicated that as many as 200 Nigerians were rounded up and thrown into under ground detention facilities with little or no access to health care. “It is out responsibility to call the attention of government to this situation so that these Nigerians can be evacuated from that country,” he said.

While contributing to the motion, Emmanuel Jime, PDP Benue, said since the situation in Libya is fluid and all the facts are not available to members, there was the urgent need for the Minister of Foreign Affairs to brief the house on steps being taken to safeguard the lives of Nigerians.

Deputy Minority leader of the House, Hon. Samson Osagie wondered why the National Transitional Council in Libya could target Nigerians resident in Libya despite the early recognition granted the NTC by the Nigerian government.

To conduct public hearing on deplorable state of Nigerian roads

In another development, the House yesterday mandated its committee on FERMA to conduct a public hearing to determine why almost all the roads in the country are in deplorable condition despite the creation of the Federal Road Maintenance Agency and the huge budgetary allocation to it yearly.

Adopting a motion by Albert Sam-Tsokwa on the need to beam a searchlight on the activities of FERMA, the House noted that despite the billions of Naira appropriated to FERMA, all Nigerian roads have remained death traps.

Nlc Mobilises Nigerians Against 200% Fuel Price Hike

The Nigerian Labour Congress on Friday said it had begun mobilising Nigerians to resist the Federal Government‘s alleged plan to raise the price of fuel by 200 per cent.

NLC Deputy President, Kiri Mohammed, told newsmen in Abuja that it was alarmed at the government‘s plan, adding that it would fight the proposed hike.

The NLC leader said it would stage a protest on Thursday, September 22 in Abuja over the proposed hike in fuel price and electricity tariff, the abuses in the privatisation process and non-payment of the N18,000 new minimum wage by some state governments.

It called on other labour bodies and civil society groups to help in the mobilisation for the rally.

He also said the NLC would investigate the scams that characterised the privatisation process and ensure the prosecution of government officials who participated in the fraud.

I support this. Africans have lost heavily being disunity and many fail to realize that out of ignorance. Any group of people lose more being disunity. Why don't we just open our bleeping eyes seriouslyhuh Will you be a slave for ever? Will you be the laughing stock of the world forever. I believe many Africans will not survive in next years to come. Many don't even know that Africa is under attack. They continue to open their shameless mouths and fight their brothers and sisters while the Arabs and Europeans continue to steal and currently fighting to remove any hindrance from their conquering of Africa.

Any African that worship Allah is ignorant and don't know Africa history with Arabs. Arabs enslaved Africans even longer than Europeans and had an even more harmful effect on the Africans. Arab should not even be in North Africa. They pushed the Africans southward and occupied North Africa to conquer Kemet, which is called the Arab invasion. Arabs enslaved Africans more than 1400 years. Any Africans that worship Arabs is a enemy of Africa and should be ashamed of themselves. Africa will never progress with African Muslims. African Muslims serve the Arab interest and forget their will always be African first no matter. Arab will surely remind them that they are Africans and of lower status.  The African Muslims are blindly following a religion without questioning its origin. Arabs will never accept African Muslim as their equal. Even in the Arabic language, there is evidences for their hatred for blacks.

Arabs spread their religion through Africa by the African Muslim. The African Muslims fight their wars for them against other non-African Muslim and try to get them to convert to a false religion .

Christianity is bad for Africans to because it was used as a tool to conquer Africans. At least you can find a christian Africans aware of some of thing whites have done to them.

Its upsetting how dumb Africans/blacks have become. It truly is. So sad !!!! A lost people that don't know their history will fall for anything
I couldn't have put it better . . . . ,

Africans are too busy worshipping 'Eoropean and Arab' dieties.

We've said to hell with our ancestors, history, and culture in favour of these false religions that have been designed to control and warp our minds.

Politics › Obasanjo's Hypocrisy In The Eyes Of Ribadu - He Was More Corrupt Than Abacha by Sunofgod(op): 8:34pm On Sep 15, 2011
Gradually but surely, the chicken is coming home to roost. Apart from corruption that characterised privatisation as revealed by the recent Senate investigation, former President Olusegun Obasanjo has received his latest moral shelling yet from his former boy, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, who served as chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

In a recent diplomatic cable accounts brought to light by Wikileaks, the former chairman of the EFCC, was quoted as saying that, while Obasanjo was busy jailing others for corruption, the former president "was cleverly covering up his tracks." In other words, Obasanjo is cleverly corrupt! But Ribadu's heaviest bombshell was that corruption under Obasanjo's administration was worse than the alleged stealing linked to the late General Sani Abacha's regime.

This damning revelation is the biggest challenge to Obasanjo's hypocrisy. As rightly observed by Ribadu, while Obasanjo established the EFCC and ICPC, the former president was allegedly infected by the same corruption virus that he set out to cure. It is a case of a doctor afflicted by a disease he was trying to cure! Although Obasanjo's hypocrisy on the anti-corruption crusade was public knowledge, the revelation by Ribadu has finally blown off the mask from the face of the former president. On the strength of the Wikileaks diplomatic cable accounts reporting a meeting between Ribadu and former U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, Robin Sanders, it is now clear that Obasanjo himself undermined the anti-corruption crusade through his own double standard. It is also now clear that Ribadu knew the former president was corrupt, but had to look the other way to save his seat as EFCC chairman.

Say no to corruption
One is particularly attracted to the revelation by Ribadu that corruption under Obasanjo was worse than the situation during the military administration of the late General Sani Abacha. Nigerians were told by Obasanjo that Abacha had emptied the national treasury through large-scale official thievery. But what happened that corruption still continues to grip the nation, despite the fact that Abacha is no more in power? What happened that, despite the billions of dollars recovered from the Abachas by Obasanjo's administration, massive stealing still continued under a "born-again" president? Again, where did all these billions of dollars coughed out by the Abachas go? Until he left office on 29th May 2007, former President Obasanjo didn't convincingly tell Nigerians where the Abacha billions were invested to improve national infrastructure or the socio-economic conditions of ordinary Nigerians.

Nuhu Ridbadu knew what he was saying because he was a witness to power and incredibly close to Obasanjo who had also used the former EFCC chairman to fight or disgrace his perceived political adversaries, especially those opposed to his infamous third term agenda, which crashed on the floor of the Senate on May 16, 2006.

Ribadu had to protect Obasanjo, despite his apparent private conviction that his boss was a clay-footed moral giant! Despite repeated petitions against Obasanjo's alleged corrupt activities, Ribadu was not keen to touch any complaint pertaining to his boss, even after leaving office, which automatically ended his immunity.

A case in point was the petition against Obasanjo filed by the Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders (CACOL), led by a Lagos lawyer. In the petition, the anti-corruption organization wanted explanation about how the former president became a multi-billionaire after becoming a president, in contrast to the fact that he was "stone broke" when he was drafted into power in 1999. General T.Y. Danjuma was the first to use the phrase "stone broke" to describe Obasanjo's pathetic financial predicament before coming into power. CACOL particularly wanted the EFCC to investigate by what magic a man saved from bankruptcy by friends before he came to power could have become a billionaire overnight after being elected a president. The former president was worth only N20,000 in 1999, according to his assets declaration record at the Code of Conduct Bureau. The anti-corruption organisation expressed open frustration at the EFCC's apathy to their petition.

According to Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, N1.2 trillion was devoured by monsters of corruption from 1999 to 2007.

Yet Gen. Abacha, was not on the scene when this epic white-collar robbery was being committed against Nigerians by their so-called democratically elected leaders. Nuhu Ribadu's acknowledgement that corruption was more devastating under Obasanjo's administration should be a revelation to the fans of the Ota farmer, who were converted to the view that Gen. Abacha was the worst evil of corruption Nigeria had ever experienced. With Ribadu's Wikileaks confessions, Obasanjo should not only apologize to the Abachas but also to millions of other Nigerians who he deceived with his so-called anti-corruption crusade.

Despite the badge of corruption he hung on Abacha's neck, Obasanjo refused to declare his assets publicly when leaving office, arguably because his new-found wealth is inconsistent with his financial status in 1999. A recent report released by Transparency International written by former U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, John Campbell, raised questions over how the Otta chickens farm could have made over 250,000 dollars monthly income. It is public knowledge that Otta farms were in ruins when Obasanjo was in jail. Even former special adviser to Obasanjo on Public Communication, Chief Femi Fani Kayode told Nigerians that Otta farms were making N30 million every month to convince Nigerians that his boss didn't make money from government. What he didn't tell Nigerians however, was that Otta farms had virtually collapsed and was struggling to survive before Obasanjo became a president in 1999. Therefore, Campbell's revelation was only in line with what Obasanjo admitted about the unbelievable profitability of Otta chickens farm while he was in office.

Although the constitution doesn't compel a president to declare his assets publicly, moral duty demands that Obasanjo should go the extra mile to convince Nigerians that he could convincingly defend his new incredible wealth by subjecting his assets to open scrutiny. After all, he takes the credit for establishing EFCC and ICPC.

Therefore, if a man has nothing to hide, he shouldn't have anything to fear in making his public life an open book. Nuhu Ribadu has dealt a mortal moral blow on Obasanjo and it is, therefore, high time the former president came out to defend the sources of his current stupendous wealth eight years after leaving office. General Abacha may not be a saint. Despite the vilification of corruption against him by enemies, his performance record in five years was still by far better than those leaders who had more oil revenues but failed to perform to justify the resources available to them

Ghana Surpasses Nigeria Again - Kweku Adoboli (31) Arrested For $2 Billion Fraud

At 3.30am this morning, a man was arrested by City of London Police in connection with an unauthorised trade that Swiss bank UBS said had cost it around $2bn. The trader is believed to be London-based Kweku Adoboli.
Adoboli, of Ghanaian decent, joined UBS as a trainee in March 2006, according to the FSA Register. He had been a member of the Delta One team under John Hughes and worked on providing synthetic assets and derivatives for ETF providers.

He and Hughes are citied as the main market maker contacts at UBS on the websites of a number of ETF providers.

In June, Nick Pink, head of global equities in Europe, the Middle Easta and Africa at UBS, said: “We want to expand the synthetic business, which is is closely aligned with our strengths in prime brokerage, cash and research business.”

Like Jérôme Kerviel, who was convicted by French courts for several financial crimes at Societe Generale in 2008, Adoboli had previously had experience in UBS's back office as a trade support analyst, which would potentially have given him the knowledge of how to conceal trades.

A source close to UBS said Adoboli was a highly-rated trader on the bank’s Delta One desk and dealt with its roster of high-profile London fund clients.

Several market participants told Financial News this morning that Adoboli may have mis-hedged his exposure to the Swiss franc and attempted to hide it from his team when the market moved against him by overcompensating with a hedge in the opposite direction. Any short position on Swiss franc volatility would have suffered after volatilities rose again earlier this week. UBS claims the third largest share in global foreign exchange trading, and is the biggest trader in the euro/franc pairing.

Outside Adoboli’s former home in Aldgate – a large loft space that he rented for £1,000 a week – Philip Otabe, Adoboli’s landlord until four months ago, said he was “very, very polite –a salesman sort of chap”.

“I wouldn’t say he was the tidiest of people though”, Otabe added. “He did get behind a couple of times on the rent, but he always made a payment in due course anyway, so I never had any reason to doubt him”.

There is a Twitter account that was set up in his name in July, but this appears to have been hacked. His followers include several bankers and hedge fund blog site Zerohedge. There is also a fake Twitter account created this morning in Adoboli's name.

Before joining the Swiss Bank, Adoboli attended Nottingham University. In October 2001 he was featured in a Sky News report about Freshers Week of which he was coordinator.

He told Sky that the first week of university was hectic when it came to socialising: "It's an amazing opportunity for hundreds of student to meet at a jamboree of parties," Adoboli said.

"By the end of the week many of the first relationships will have been established and most of them will have ended."

Before university, from 1992 to 1998, he attended a Quaker academy in West Yorkshire, the Ackworth school, of which he is listed as part of the alumni network. The school was founded in 1779 near Pontefract and offers day and boarding options to students.

Hughes went to Warwick University, joining UBS as a trainee in 2005, according to the FSA register. He is a popular figure among the UBS’s London investment banking teams, according to people familiar with the matter.

Adoboli and Hughes were unreachable for comment this morning and UBS declined to comment.
