Pearl93: Hi guys. So I booked my visa interview last week and fortunately got January 5th. Before This, I was only seeing January 30th. I kept refreshing at midnight and early in the morning especially. Took me many days of sleepless night, but it was worth it. If you need a new visa date, I suggest you do the same.
I have a little problem. My first degree is from the UK and i was sponsored by my parents. But due to the current situation in Nigeria, they can't afford to sponsor my Masters. My boyfriend works with a FTSE 100 company in the U.S and earns about 12k dollars a month. He works offshore. He encouraged me to apply to the U.S instead of the U.K and he promised to foot all bills. So far he has kept his side of the deal by paying for GRE, DHL, application fees, sevis and all. It was also his bank statement that I used in getting my I20. My problem now is he said I must not mention at the interview that he is my boyfriend. He said I should say guardian or uncle. Because the fastest way to get denied is to say I have a boyfriend who is an American citizen. But i don't know how feasible that lie is. I am 23 and he is 35. How can he be my guardian? He has sent his bank statements and there is a closing balance of almost 50k dollars. So it surely covers my tuition and cost of living.
He said I should tell the consulate that he is my uncle and my parents sponsored him in school when things were going well. And now he is repaying back the gesture.
Do you guys think that would fly? I am really confused. I picked relative in my DS160 application. I don't want problems getting the Visa. If the VO asks why my parents are not sponsoring me this time since they paid so much for my first degree in London.
Also, do you know any way i can apply for a graduate assistant? I don't want to put all my hopes on my boyfriend . You know how these things can turn out. Right now I have nothing but him. And it scares me that if anything goes wrong, I would be stranded. He can be a bit impatient and has a bad temper. And honestly, I am not very patient myself. Even if it's an accommodation scholarship. He wants me to live with his friend who is married. Because im not studying in the same state he lives. And I honestly don't want to do that. *sigh* hmmmm |

Glocal1: Request for your transcript from your school, collect it sealed and post it alongside your certificate to wes. If your school doesn't issue transcript by hand, then you just print d transcript request form on wes website and submit to d school for appropriate correspondence with wes. I think this option would be better n faster.please when u made mention of certificate hope you meant photocopy of my cert? |

goodemma20: WES will not evaluate any transcript that you send, the authenticity cannot be verified, what you are required to do is to go to your school after you've initiated the process with WES and tell them to send official transcript to WES. The process for WES evaluation can range from just a few weeks to months. It all dapends on how fast your schools sends transcripts and responds to WES verification mail, so it is better you continue to disturb them after you initiate the process.....hope this helps thanks bro pls are they sending it via mail or email? |

Lamexx: I understand what AfonjaBoston is saying. You can't just be going for VISA interview like that. Something must have been wrong with one or more of your response somewhere. Do a retreat, sit back, ask yourself questions like what am I doing wrong? What is different in my circumstances between my last denial and now? Possibly post your transcript of all your six denials so that people can criticize it and make you a better candidate. I checked back and found you never posted any of your transcript from your first interview in 2015. How then can someone help you? If you are using an agent, its time you send him on retirement. You don't need one. I also noticed you did not take GRE and TOEFL. If you did...fine. If you did not, it is high time you take both exams even if the school waived it for you. Moreover, how can the school waived GRE for someone with a 3.63 GPA. "Woss Wobi", you are making yourself look like a desperate candidate and you may have been profile so in their system as one.
Alternatively, if you are in lagos, go to Educational Advising Centre (EAC) at the embassy at Walter Carrington. Present your case and hear what they tell you. It will be nothing different from what I have said. please what's 3.63 in america standard? u r sounding like it's a 3rd class |

frostsc: You can visit their site at www.gregmattoeflnigeria.com . They have presence in Abuja as well as Lagos. Lagos is somewhere in Obafemi Awolowo Way. I think number 77 while the Abuja one... I can't help with that. Visit their site. . They are the only ones who give Free lectures for GRE, GMAT and TOEFL in Nigeria and believe me it's better than the paid lectures you get anywhere. I'm talking from experience.
Where is B.Y Mafit on this thread sef? I think they should have presence here. thanks bro but this reply came rather late. I have already registered with them today I got free textbook n CD. but the physical lecture aspect is the most painful part bcuz I don't reside in Lagos but Benin. |

Goodguyalways: I apologize to everyone not to have posted this earlier.
My interview was slated for Dec 8th and was approved. I was interviewed by the lady in counter 2 and below convo ensued
Me: good morning
VO: (not sure if she answered) what course are you going to study
Me: Management Information Systems (though I had Information Technology on my SEVIS form)but not a problem as I was informed by the school that it wasn't an error)
VO: (looks at my SEVIS form to confirm) Why did you choose NIu
Me: there's a lab that consist of current Database Softwares, built in client/server system and SAP control component system which affords the opportunity of working through many real life situations thereby gaining hands on experience and training on this course which are the tools required to excel in my area of specialization .
Also, Asides from the masters degree being awarded, a certification in SAP will also be awarded which is an added qualification .
The program specializes in Business Analytics and SAP which are both in line with my career aspirations as I intend becoming a consultant in Business Analytics.
VO: (Nods)Did you apply to any other school?
Me: Yes
VO: how many
Me: 3
VO: nods, mention them
Me: NIU, UD and Texas A&M
VO:How many gave you admit
Me: 2
VO: You got your visa when? (referring to my B1/B2 visa)
Me: 2017
VO: have you travelled( referring to if I've used the US visa)
Me: Not yet
VO: (Nods before I even finished) Where have you travelled to?
Me: UK and Dubai
VO: who is your sponsor
Me: My Dad:
VO: (checks something on her system) you are qualified for this visa, collect your passport at your chosen selection point, gave me the white paper and also another paper to attend an admission forum
Me: Thought she first of all said you're not qualified, I was like wetin and then I saw the white paper, was so elated. Told her thank you very much and merry Christmas in advance.
HINT: Please be prepared for your interview and leave the rest for the VO to decide. I listened to some interviews before I had mine that day, obvious questions where asked relating to the students intending courses and they could not answer these questions. A VO asked a student the content of his intending course and said he didn't know, another who's profession was nursing wanted to go study pre-nursing, told VO his intending course is a higher type of nursing to his present profession and could not relate both together. congrats where you given any form of scholarship based on GRE or TOEFL? |

softamy: Hi guys, I got my visa approved on Tuesday by the Lady in window 4 @ the Lagos consulate and I promised myself that I will share my transcripts if I am approved . The lady was giving out blue paper like Xmas gift but i tried to stay calm even though I stammered through out the interview. My transcript goes like dis!
Vo: Good morning
Me: Good morning
Vo: So you are going to what school?
Me: Point Park University in Pennsylvania to study media communication
Vo: So what do you do ATM?
Me: I did my Nysc program which lasted till may this year, after which I started working voluntarily as a public relations assistant for chijitech services.
Vo: what are your roles?
Me: I help the public relations department to organize events such as corporate dinner and press conference for the company. I also draft and distribute contents such as newsletters and bulletin.
Vo: how did you find out about the school
Me: through the Us education fair that was held in Lagos . I was quite impressed with the information that Ppu representatives had to share.
Vo: how many schools did you apply to?
Me: 3 schools, uni of Alabama, west Chester university and point park university.
Vo: there are hundreds of university in the US, how did you narrow your search to these three schools. (Mehn, this question threw me off balance..I wasn't prepared at all for it o..I just said one rubbish)
Me: I chose these schools bcoz the curriculum matches that of my career interests
Vo: (cuts in) what curriculum?
Me: the three schools have school of journalism, especially point park university that has a school of communication..(I can't believe I said all diz)
Vo cuts in) so you chose point park bcoz it has a school of communication?
Me: Oh no..not at all, I chose Ppu bcoz of their center of media innovation center that is set up to provide students the opportunity to practicalise what is being taught to them in the class.
Vo(cuts in again) center of what?(typing vigorously to check the authenticity of what I just said).
Me: media innovation
Vo: What is it about?
Me: it is a 4,000 square foot building that is well equipped with state of the art media facilities like broadcast studio, newsrooms and editorial office.
Vo: ( flips through the pages of my passport, slides the old passport from the new one, keeps the latter in a tray and passes me the old one with my white paper) Your visa has been approved, keep your I-20 as you will need it at the POE.
I frantically grabbed my documents and left before she calls me back for another thing.. no documents was asked and no I didn't take any tests..lol, it could only be God coz I stammered and flopped a lot through out the interview
Note: pls stay away from those scams o..they told me I needed to print coloured copy of the front pages of my old and new passport ..each print out is a thousand naira..and I gave them 2k for both of my passports..I felt like crying wen the officials checking my docs flinged the print out away..pls o stay woke. And I wish all future applicants success!!
God and preparation is key!!! congrats dear can I pm you I am interested in "media technology "in that same school |

DanjaNinja: @Shakol91 You don't have to be afraid. The best way to conquer fear is to identify and confront your fears. Fear is an illusion, its simply False Expression Appearing Real. That said, What do fear most about the GRE? Please identity your weak points and draw up a study plan to address each weak point. If you find this difficult, I can help you by creating targeted study plans for the various areas of weakness BUT you must play your role by doing a self appraisal.
I like the group discussion idea but i don't think i have the time to fully commit to make it sustainable. I would try my best to contribute the best way i can. You can start by posting questions on areas of perceived difficulty. I'll do my best to solve them.
Thanks. bro please I need GRE study materials I just sent u a pm |

Dupsaw: Visa Approved today at Lagos Embassy 6:45. This VO can ask question for Africa, but he is a nice guy tho. He listens to all one has to say. I wasn't even looking round the room because I was not ready to see any blue paper that would destabilize me, I was just looking towards the other side of the room
I would like to thank Deetus(my big uncle) for his time. Also Ecoleco, you were the first person I reached out to on this forum and you guided me according. Texrem words can not express how grateful I am to you for everything, you are one in a million. Teminiyi, thank you for all the scolding, it made me sit uptight. Abeeolars thank you for encouraging me and staying up all night with me on the phone yesterday.. And to everyone who I reached out to here at one time or the other. Thank you.
VO: Come forward please VO: Passport and i-20 (passes it to him)
VO: Which school are you going to? ME: Cleveland state university Ohio
VO: Course? ME: Criminology
VO: (looks at me with surprise and says why criminology) ME: I am someone who I love been involved in solving situations and in Nigeria , we are dealing with a lot to criminal situations (nods in agreement with me,for my mind I say OK O) and I believe that an indept knowledge of criminology is not only going to help me in understanding the psychologies that are behide crimes but it would also help me in finding suitable measures to tackle crimes from frequent occurrence in my country and also with this degree I would be able to contribute to the security of lives and properties of the people that are living in Nigeria.
VO:What kind of Job would you get with this degree in Nigeria ME: I will take up a job with a law enforcement agency here in Nigeria where I would be able to utilize the skills and knowledge which I would have learnt in helping my country to tackle the crimes that we are facing from occurring frequently.
VO:Who is paying? ME: My uncle
VO: What does he do? ME: He works with Google as a( VO cuts in and says Google here in Nigeria or US) here in Nigeria as a product marketing manager for Nigeria and he owns a digital agency that is in partnership with Google here in Nigeria where they provide services to telecommunications , banks and multinational companies.

VO: what course your ND IN and what year did you finish? ME: In masscomm and finished in 2013
VO: OK continue about your voluntary job ME: Chai na so i forget wayti i dey say o i forgot the name of the voluntary job company, I just started smiling so much and then he smiled back(this is why i said he is a nice guy, I interpreted the smile as calm down girl we are just having a conversation) and immediately i remembered. I worked with the committee encouraging corporate philanthropy on raising funds to buy a mobile cancer clinic for Lagos and present I work with a security firm as a customer service rep(ALL IN DS160).
VO: Have you traveled out before ME: I havent had any reason to until now(looks up and gives me a look that means like seriously)
VO; Are you married? ME: NO
VO:How many schools did you apply to? ME:3
VO: How many admitted you and name them ME: MTSU and Michigan state university, MTSU admitted me
VO: Why pick cleveland over MTSU? ME; I chose csu because they have a criminology research center where I would be exposed to know how criminal minds work and they dont just teach the theory aspect of criminology alone but they teach with a lot of practical case studies which better prepares me on how to face the criminal world in real life. na so i shut up my mouth o because seriously I had nothing more to say( I remember texrem telling me to find more reasons for this particular question but I was too lazy to)
VO:Stared typing just when I thought it was over he then said can I see you ND Transcript ME; For my mind I say which kind wahala be this then i said " Cleveland state university did not use my ND transcript in giving me admission my WAEC result was used.
VO: Can I see it, ME: Passed it with confidence unto say na so so distinctions dey there.
VO: Can i see your uncle's bank statement...
And then the waiting started and me praying to God to be approved. he returns my WAEC result and starts to scrutinize my bank statement and then drops it, I just thought I would be put on AP, then he says your uncle works with Google and I SAY yes. and he gives me the statement and says I will be...trust me that is the only thing I heard. i dont even know where he brought out the white paper from.
ME; Thank you and enjoy the rest of your day. na so i dey say thank you Jesus till i got to the car park.

TWoods: You’re going about this all wrong. The aim shouldn’t be selecting a school favorable to the VOs but one that helps you achieve your goal - which is to advance your career. In that case, these are things I would think about if I were you:
1. What is my major of choice? 2. Which are the top schools for that major? 3. Depending on cost and admissions requirements, can I narrow my list from 2) above to 3-4 schools?
Chances are, all schools selected in 3) above will be acceptable to the VOs and you are better placed to answer the question “why did you select this school” without needing a mock or cramming someone else’s answers. thanks |
