IlekeHD: How can we claim that a group is not Yoruba when Ekiti /Ondo is quite different from Oyo?
And who made Oyo the language and the rest dialects?
I see itsekiri as another Yoruba dialect. It came to be because Oyo was the administrative HQ for a long time. Ibadan was a military HQ while Ile Ife was the spiritual HQ. Oyo dialect ended up being the lingua franca because of the role Oyo was playig then. It was the FCT of that time. |

That's some funny thread and I like those Yorubas from Kogi - they adore their Yoruba roots despite not being part of the SW. I hardly visit other sections, apart from Politics. There are too many shallow brains and air-headed fellas in other sections. For ths category of yorubas, that have shown enthusiasm in aligning with their root, it is our duty to protect them. It is let to Ilorin people to do same and the Akoko Edos. The olukumi have always lay claim to their yoruba heritage. Likewise Itshekiris. Though we prefer to recognise the itshekiris as a different ethnicity because of the distance. |

IlekeHD: I like mean women
Eventually her slaves killed her. No, she was killed by the Ibadan warriors. She killed a slave girl for getting pregnant. She accused another slave of impregnating her, whereas it was her younger brother that is responsible and the younger brother actually lay claim to the pregnancy. All pleas fell on her deaf ears, She instructed the lady to be beheaded, but the slave by an dthe younger brother connived and made the lady to escape. She killed them all and still executed the lady. The King summoned her to the palace several times, she never showed up The King later gave the final order that she must be brought to the palace whether dead or alive. He dispatched the fiercest warriors to her house. She was eventually overpowered, but se committed suicide before they could effect the arrest. She was very close friend of Madam Tinubu, the iyalode of Egba, |

Tale the Ogongo Magori ,Igala, Olukumi and the Bini royal houses I do ot even know anything about the Ogori Magogos. Igalas have more link with the Igbos than the yorubas. Olukumis are descendants of Oduduwa. Likewise the ruling houe of Bini. I even read that the official language of the Oba of Benin within the courtyard is Yoruba, I do not know how true that is, but taking the eulogy of Oba of benin -- Iku Akpolokpolo -- it might be true. |

I remember Queen E (forget her name). Losing her daughter to childbirth changed her. Efunsetan. she was not a queen. She was very mean because she did not have any child. She was very rich and powerful. She has many slaves and she was always maltreating them. She was the Iyalode. More or less like the Leader of women. Then, she was controlling the route between Eko and Ibadan. The egbas and ibadan always deal directly in trade through her. she was an agent/middleman. somegirl1: That was never the basis for this debate. The point was if regional/ state performance were to be compared based on ethnicity, it would be unfair to include Lagos's given it's multi-ethnic composition unless other SW states mainly comprising of yorubas performed just as well. If SW was not habitable, just like SE and NE, you would have seen yorubas migrating to other regions in droves, as being witnedssed in the migration of Syrians to Europe and Eritreans to Europe. Alas, the reverse is the case, with more people migrating to SW in a ratio of 1500:1 when compared to the ones emigrating out of SW to other regions. Yeah, agreed other parts of SW might not be on the same level as Lagos. You will also agree with me that there is no mass exodus out of those places to other regions. That means the standard of living, infrastructure and nature is better than other regions. |

Aareonakakanfo: I know BBUT these permutations don't guarantee us of owning kwara state if autonomy were to be granted. How come we've been the only ones speaking for them? they themselves need to come out and make their intentions known.I would have expected the Governor of kwara state to hold a meeting with the guys at DAWN to see what can be done about it but so far we haven't heard anything, there's no communication between him and the governors in the south-west We do not speak for them. if they cannot speak for themselves, that is their eternal headache. Emphasis have always been on 6core SW states, where the states are almost 100% homogenous with pockets of known migrants. Kwara has 70% yorubas and 30% others -- Fulanis, baribas and Nupes. Their percentge is even lower in kogi and more minute in Edo. It is left for them to make te move to join the core SW and if they are ok with the present political structure, who are we to begrudge them? |
Politics › Re: Yoruba Commonwealth and Politics by superstar1(m): 3:51pm On Oct 26, 2015 |
Aareonakakanfo: My grouse here is the fact that i haven't heard prominent politicians from Kwara come out to make their intentions known on a possible merger with the south-west They aligned with the north because of the comparative advantage it gave them, especially during the days of the military. With the advent of democracy, they are leaning more and more towards SW, having realise they are just making up the numbers. |

Aareonakakanfo: Is the north ready to release kwara? will they ever let that happen?
They need to come out and tell us their position on this, we can't speak for them. You are getting it twisted. 3/4 of Kwara is yoruba and 1/5th of kogi is yoruba and a more minute percentage in Edo. Kwara is not ilorin alone, mind you. They are igbomina clan and a key constituent of the yoruba race. Worst case, a referendum will be carried out there. for them to take their destiny in their hands. |

ProfShymex: I like the idea of diaspora Yorubas contributing to help develop education and health amenities in Yorubaland - however, can this give us the desired change we want? - absolutely not. The maintenance culture in Nigeria is worrisome and for what you're canvassing to work effectively, there have to be people on the ground working assiduously to keep the initiative going. But when you've got a people who're hungry and it's all man for himself cos the country is in a terrible state - a lot of folks will turn an initiative like that into a profiteering venture. And that's where I agree with "Aarekakanfo/cabbieAC". Also how would you be able to keep such initiative a Yoruba-centered one in a country as intertwined as Nigeria? For an initiative like this one to work, there has to be a structure created by government, for it to be able to permeate and get to the intended people...and a structure like that is non-existent in Nigeria.
The truth is that nothing works in Nigeria and the folks are hungry. So it will very difficult to remit whatever token you've to folks who're looking to survive without them channeling those funds for personal use. And you can't blame them cos it's for survival in the jungle. My friend went to Abuja a few months ago cos we're doing a few projects with some folks and can you believe he had to change his hotel about three times the first night alone...and even when he got to decent one, he had to a change rooms a few times cos of one problem or the other? Even internet was almost non-existent and he had to buy modem. My own experience was a bit different cos I stayed with my uncle in Lagos and he's super rich. So when helped a lot cos being inside the house - it's like I never left where I came from. However, once I stepped out...the reality of Nigeria is just so glaring. Nothing works. Then you have got a situation whereby folks old enough to be ya dad would bow down to you and call you "Sir" for no reason. Give them £50 equivalent of Nigerian money and they'll start telling you how that money would help fix a lot of things and literally start worshipping you like a demi-god. So how would you trust folks in need like that with money to run an initiative, when they need that money to survive? It's sad, really.
Personally, I think the best thing to do with remittance is to look inwards into ya immediate and extended families that are struggling in Nigeria (I believe we all have folks like that cos all fingers aren't equally) and help sponsor their brightest kids into the best schools in the country. With that, it'll be easy to monitor their progress and put the money into good use. I've got an aunt who's a barrister and she sponsors close to ten kids in Nigeria. Ditto uncles who help as well...and my parents also contribute their own quota. That's something I'm looking into. And with an initiative like that, it'll be easier to monitor progress and achieve results, if everyone can just remit to help the disadvantaged folks in their immediate/extended families.
Lastly, we as Yorubas in the new world just need to keep asking questions and discussing the best ways/methods/approaches to move Yorubas forward - without getting entangled in the show of shame and celebration of mediocrity/non-achievement a lot of charlatans love doing...and hope they'll listen to us one day cos it's a collective destiny. Folks can say go back "home" and contribute ya quota, but how's that feasible within a structure like that? How many people have gone to Nigeria to help, only to come back miserable with broken dreams like a Tarzan figure? I remember I used to be on going to Nigeria after Uni to help back in the day. However, you'll see folks tell you to shut up and sit ya arse where you are cos the environment isn't conducive enough for a dream like that. And I saw the reality when I went there. Thanks Shymexx. This piece really got me thinking. |

WIZGUY69: I wish SW govt. (FG) can build a light rail that connects Lagos-Oyo(Ibadan) - Osun (Osogbo) - Ondo (Akure). is it possible? beside the federal highway. Odua Goup almost sealed a deal on Lagos Ibadan rail in 2010 with a foreign technical partner and banks were ready to finance it. They suddenly realise the constitution only vested the running of the rail system on NRC. This was suspended until the new NRC Act sees the light of day. It has passed first reading at the level of the NA. The revised ACT is expected to allow private ownership of rail systems in Nigeria. With that you can be rest assured there will certainly be a supersonic rail system connecting the SW states and maybe with Kwara and parts of kogi that are yoruba speaking. |

I do not know the kind of ethnicity that will be fighting all and sundry that they are part of them and the other party will be rejecting such claims. Yorubas have ancestral relationship with Benin people, itshekiris, Nupes, Ebiras etc do we make them Yorubas by force? We have yorubas in Benin Republic and Togo, do you see us annexing those countries as our own Crimea? We have millions of people that have yoruba ancestral lineage in South America - people speaking yoruba, well grounded in the culture and religion -- and have we ever lay claim to any part of South America. There should be something that defines which clan or tribe is a part or not a part of an ethnicity and all these confusion needs to stop. They have delta igbo, rivers igbo, akwa ibom igbo and even sambisa igbo. I do not know how an imaginary physical delineation defines ethnicity. I can as well say we have Kogi-yorubas, Kwara yorubas, Benin Yorubas, Delta Yoruba, Benin Republic yorubas, Togo Yorubas and South American Yorubas. Rubbish of the highest order. |

In as much as it is Oduduwa's land, it belongs to all. Our forefathers made Oyo the capital of yorubas centuries ago and when they deemed it fit, it was moved to Ibadan up till the days of the Awolowo and subsequent generations have made Lagos capital of the Yorubas, our collective commonwealth and heritage. If we like, we can move same to Yagba in Kogi when we so wish. For now, we are concentrating our effort on Lagos and it is rubbing off on other contiguous states. |
