Ironsi is a military man and he and any other military ruler need the unitary system to be able to rule, but we not in millitary era anymore, wats ur point
Stop jumping around like the orango tang that you are.

Follow the line of argument of the discussion.

Why did SE not back the call for regionalism at the last Confab?

Homie relax a coup plotter is our president today. All the other coup plotters are walking freely and getting monthly allowance as per the constitution and no single soul is complaining. I think people hold Igbos to a different standard than other Nigerians.

But yes I agree with you he should have given a transition plan to the nation for back to civilian rule much sooner. Besides he spent only 6 months in office.
I am quite relaxed. There is no big deal in being a coup plotter.

It is the way Igbos believe they were not allowed to form their country that is insulting and annoying to our sensibilities. You initiated a reaction that snowballed into a full scale war and you are still accusing others.

If there was no coup of January 1966, definitely there will not have been the pogrom of July 1966 and we won't be here talking about one stup1d Aburi Accord and the unfortunate Biafran war.

Dundee, what's the use of region when it's not practising federalism and had the head of state foisting leaders on them? Do you know the creation of states doesn't stop the states from practising true federalism if allowed?
Let me ask you, What business do the goat, Ojukwu have with governing the north under Ironsi regime, especially after the same ibo killed their sarduna?
As a matter of fact, the creation of state is the best thing to ever happen to Nigeria in the sense that it prevented ibo thieves from claiming peoples' land and region!
Shameless cursed losers!
He did not appoint Ojukwu as Head of Northern Region. He appointed Hassan Katsina.

Take away your tribalism for once and put yourself in Ironsi shoes. He governed the country in a chaotic period the only way that made sense to him which was using the military command structure. What would you have done differently if you were the highest ranking military officer. In fact one of his closest friend at that time was Danjuma who later killed him in the fake counter coup. If it was Igbo coup, he would have made sure all his associates where all Igbo. The second highest ranking officer at that time was a Yoruba man. I forgot his name but that was the man ojukwu told Gowan to step down for. But Gowan refused. Mind you in Thailand, the military takes over periodically whenever the civilian government becomes chaotic and restores civil rule onces things get sorted out. No civilian population gets massacred.
If he had:

1. Maintain civilian rule at regional level

2. Speedily prosecute the coup plotters.

3. Institute a clear cut road map back to democracy

Things would have been totally different because everybody would have been placated one way or the other.

The Thai military that takes over regularly do not kill the leaders of other regions and protect the people that are of ther own ethnicity. It makes it easy for the citizens to accept the govt fully in the interim, pending when power shall be returned back to the civilians.

Mr super so appointing a regional military government is the same as dissolving the region. I still don't see anywhere in his speech where he said the regions ceases to exist. In the beginning of his speech, he made it clear that it was to maintain order. Was it not also an Igbo man that stopped the coup. If it was an agenda for Igbos to rule, then why would ojukwu help stop the coup.

The only mistake Ironsi made was not arresting nzeogwu because that made it look like a planned Igbo coup even though the real counter-coup was also done by Igbo generals.

You are very funny.

Before the coup, regional govts were not reporting to the central Federal Govt and Mr Ironsi by fiat said, going forward all regional heads must report to me.

That singular act abolished regionalism and instils unitarism, which is the only language of the military.

By extension, Mr Ironsi -- an Igbo man, abolished our thriving regionalism and introduced unitarism. Gowon merely up-scaled what Ironsi introduced.

Be that as it may, regionalism still remains our best bet for this country and a faster route to actualisation of secession dream.

It is quite surprising that none of the other regions except SW, clamoured for regionalism in the last national jamboree of a conference.

And since you have been in power for over forty years, what stopped you and your leaders from reverting back or better still, allow the aburi accord that calls for confederacy to see the light of the day? You even went to war to maintain the unitary system you claim you so much abhor. Senseless hypocrite
We are very happy to have some people as our slaves, while they are shouting "let us go".

This lie has been debunked so many times on nairaland and yet you people keep using it to suit your agenda against ndigbo. A lie can be repeated a million times but it's still a lie.

Aguiyi Ironsi Never ever cancelled the regional system. What he did was to unify the civil service in all region under the millitary command to maintain order after the nzeogwu led coup

Do you know who actually destroyed the regional system? It was GOWAN. Yes Gowan did it. He dissolved the regional system during the civil war and began to create useless states and lgs.
Y1bos and their persistent effort to revise history. Unfortunately the history is too detailed to be unjustly revised by born losers.

Ironsi introduced the Unitary system of governance into Nigeria and it was a smoke-screen for y1bos to be lording it over everybody, after killing their leaders.

This is the full speech of Aguiyi Ironsi Speech on January 15. 1966

We were practising this before some greedy people, in their bid to lord it over others, cancelled it and introduced the devilish unitary system, that has been the clog in the wheel of progress of this nation and our bane since 1966.

All these they did, after killing leaders of other regions and telling us how Angel Gabriel protected the leaders from their own ethnicity from being killed by the trigger army mor0ns.

Politics › Re: What Does The South West Offer Nigeria by superstar1(m): 8:06pm On Oct 22, 2015
Gbawe:
It is not as simple as that. Politics plays a huge part in the underdevelopment of the SW. Post military rule, i.e 1999 onwards, Nigerian politics was highly unevolved and rudimentarily ineffective because it was entirely about rapacious greed and self-aggrandizement of a few. from 1999 looting to performance ratio was probably 70:30. I.e political leaders steal 70% of what is available and fund States with the rest. This happened uniformly across the SW because democracy was in its infancy and elections were never free or fair. Instead elections were "do or die" affairs where 'strong men' , often those who controlled the thugs and patronage system, rigged themselves into power continuously, against the will of the people, to create and maintain a system that systematically and cynically cornered the wealth of a nation for a few.

Things are now evolving because the Yorubas, as soon as elections became fairer, rejected the crooks, thugs and misrulers to pitch tent with leaders of proven ability. This has resulted in the gradual changes we are seeing today whereby the SW, in a cesspit of underdevelopment and politics of greed and corruption, is slowly becoming a well-led region where the ratio of looting to performance is probably around 40:60. As elections become fairer, leadership accountability improves and as democratic governance become more refined, and as Nigerians become more politically sophisticate enough to unemotionally vote out misrulers and demand more from leaders, then I feel the ratio will be 10:90 in the next ten years. Much of the underdevelopment you see is due to the wrong sort of people, whether Abacha or Gbenga Daniel, controlling very important political positions.

Ultimately, the OP is a bigot and mischief-maker. We understand his 'mission' which is to belittle and discredit the Yoruba by ignorantly parading them as unproductive and "parasitic". The Yorubas responding here are simply dealing with him from that perspective. We are not saying the SW is now the USA or the UK but the point we are making is that, within the context of general mediocrity that is Nigeria, we hold our own and cannot, by any stretch of the wildest imagination, be viewed as a people whose worth to Nigeria can be doubted or discredited.

I think both of you are either very clueless or simply failing to admit the fact.

No NIGERIA police station can easily process 500 surrendering activists even in 48hrs, and when the 500 are spontaneous across all the police stations in the region, the system will collapse. That is what IPOB should do if they have the organizational and operational ability. It's a game changer!
you must be living in the moon.

I can assure you that the Nigerian Police that I know and that can kill because of N20, will pack all the 500 in a 2by2inches cell and the licky survivors will be bailed by their families with thousands of naira.

Be rest assured, it will be an unprecedented level of business for the Nigerian Police.
