Look, there is no hole in any armor plate on the T72 because that would be a deadlining fault for any nation (because at that point the tank doesn't serve it's purpose). The tank in the pictures are either missing sideskirts or splash guards. Those are all routine/optional features. That's not a sign of a vehicle in bad shape, it's a sign of a vehicle being used in the field. War isn't clean, go look at real operational photos of ww2 or any other large conflict. Not all the vehicles will be in factory fresh condition because it's simply impossible.

T72 isn't even a bad tank. The T90, at it's base model, is literally a T72B. Having a T90 or T72 will not substantially effect any progress in the NE. Boko Haram are not shooting high performance ATGMs they are probably stuck with only base model RPG-7s or maybe an upgraded RPG-7V if they are lucky. Both of those will struggle with the front of a T72. Sure they can get in through the side but so can just about anything can get through the side of a modern MBT.

Now as for the pics of T72s in bad state. Most of those issues only look superficial. Missing a splashguard will not effect the tanks performances (just makes it a pain to clean and requires more frequent cleaning). Missing ERA blocks is a simple fix and isn't even worth mentioning. The only proof to the tanks falling apart would be to mention the readiness percentage of an armored division but if it's anything like the US (and I'm sure it is) you'd have to be the unit quartermaster or in the Headquarters unit to know that info as that's highly confidential.

Now imo if there were to be more tanks bought I would say either buy some high quality T72Bs and T90s or go with a Chinese Type 99. NATO is out of the question so no point even considering them and getting. T14 is unlikely since the Russians are having issues funding production for themselves. I doubt they would start selling T14s to anyone else.

The pot holes on Lagos Benin expressway started at the size of a rat, Nigerian government said its not a big problem, road must spoil when its used everyday. Oga, those new tanks are not made and kept in showrooms waiting for buyers. You place an order, it goes through long bureaucracy that takes many months to years, then approval, then start of production, then you get supplied in piecemeal over stretched period of time. God help you the seller country doesn't have national emergency by then or you don't have diplomatic fallout.

Meanwhile, tank in storage takes far lesser time to get approval and delivered since it was ready build, mostly functioning and already planned/considered for shedding off.

T90 = remodelled T72

....whereas , T72 is the workhorse of any Russian built tank using army anywhere in the world. It is what C130 is to most air force mobility command, to Russian equipped army armour battalion.

T72 & T55 make up larger fraction of Russian Army tank inventory. Those are their real work horses. In fact, the latest upgrade of T72 matches T90 toe to toe in every performance, and edges it on proven history.

All said, what you probably should be thinking is getting large number of well preserved T72 and upgrading good numbers to latest configuration. That's far more effective and efficient than waiting for fancy T90, Armata or even Leopard 2 (which you might never get due to past experiences with NATO). There's something calls "high-low" mix in equipment planning. Good number of regular armoured T72s + upgraded T72 + maybe down initial payment for "tropicalized" Armata you/we hope to introduce in another 10-15yrs, when some of the T72s, Vickers and Scorpions would have been finally scrapped. By the way, remember to make provision for light tank replacement for the Scorpions too.

You might tell us the merits of the T-90 cos for me it's just the T-72 with upgrades. It might be a stretch but I fancy the Leopards. The Germans are quite good dealers. We can home incorporate some sensitive tech as always on any purchase not in the T-90/Leopard range assuming they won't sell. We know how to do these things. NAF spent $ 1 billion on procurement in 2012-2013 alone, but we saw only a few second hand hardware, including second hand mi-24 helicopters bought from scrap yard and fixed with wrong propeller causing crash in which the propeller cut off the head of the NAF pilot, he was buried as headless body.

Do you know that same $1 billion can buy NAF 20 brand new su-30 flankers? GEJ did not steal kobo, he only allowed others to steal and PDP elites took most of the money but it was passed through NAF account with air marshalls agreeing to do the dirty deal with their own personal reward of multi-million dollar loot siphoned as fake consultancy contracts that enriched Badeh, Umar, Gbadebo, Amosu, etc into multi-billionaires overnight. Algeria spent $ 8 billion on the fantastic weapons purchases that you see in photos all over the internet, it made Algeria the undisputed most modern military in Africa and the second most powerful after Egypt according to global firepower.

Compare Nigerian military to Algerian military in terms of equipment, then put your tribe, religion and political party aside for 10 minutes, I am sure your God given conscience will tell you that Nigerian military 2011-2015 was the most corrupt in the world.

Why did NAF not replace their Jaguars when oil was $100 a barrel and we gave them around $ 4 billion from defence budget? Instead Air Marshals Badeh, Amosu, Umar etc all purchased billion naira mansions in Abuja and Lagos, then forcing NAF to keep flying 30 year aged Alpha jets.

Where was political will in 2011-2015 ? This is the current political will in the era of falling oil price and many hungry people on our streets starving to coma. Give us oil at $100 a barrel today and you will see mig-35 land in NAF TAC base Makurdi in NAF colors.
