While the country grapples with qualifying for the Nations Cup, rot at the base of the game could be reason why we might never really make great strides. A young man visited my family at home on Sunday afternoon and we began to delve into the matter of the strange defeat of the Super Eagles in Khartoum the day before. As we talked about the fate of Nigeria’s qualification for the Africa Cup of Nations hanging in the balance and how it seems many players in the national team do not deserve their place, my visitor opened up on his experience playing in a youth academy. While growing up, this young man realized he had special talent for football and had his father register him with one of the most famous football academies in the country. Every Saturday, he went to train with many other young boys who hoped to one day become stars and represent their country on the big stage. Joseph (not his real name) told me how he trained so hard that every breathing moment was used in imagining himself at a top club playing alongside his heroes. However, at the academy he realized that no matter how hard he trained, when there was any opportunity to play competitive matches, himself and his hard working colleagues were sidelined for new players who emerged out of the blues. It dawned on them that many of the players who were featured in their place had been included very late due to the influence that their parents had with the coaching directors. Not only were these new players favoured, their parents seemed to grease the palms of the coaches in order that their children could catch the eye of scouts during those important competitions. Joseph spent seven years playing at the academy, training every Saturday and often twice a week ahead of tournaments, but played less than five competitive matches throughout. On realizing that he wasn’t going to get the push he needed to catch the eye of the scouts and move into the big leagues, he eventually opted to learn photography as his life trade. I was touched after hearing his story and was saddened at how corrupt football at the grassroots is in Nigeria. Like Joseph, many budding talents have been lost to the corrupt system. When a talented young boy or girl fails to find someone to give them that edge in a corrupt system, their talent fades away and they lose interest. Imagine how many Jay Jays and Papilos have abandoned their talent because they had no father or uncle to grease the palms of the academy coach who could field them in a competition where they would have caught the eye of a Nigeria Premier League club’s scout. So we end up with less than talented players on the youth national teams who have gotten there mainly because their agent or parent paid nicely to the coach in charge. Fingers have always been pointed at national team coaches for asking for bribes from players and players’ agents in order to receive call ups. However, nothing has ever been proved because players are afraid to speak out or rock the boat. No one wants to be accused of bringing down another man even in the face of blatant abuse of power. Hence, the cycle continues as we wallow in silence. Inadvertently, Nigeria ends up with mediocre players who have learnt from their youth that the best way to achieve success is to grease the palm of the coach and you will be called up to his squad. Like Austin Okocha tweeted on Saturday, Nigerian football has died long ago we’re only just witnessing its obituary. It is killed by every academy and national team coach who insists on fielding undeserving players after collecting gratification from their parents and agents. They are the ones killing the dreams of many young Josephs out there, inadvertently shortchanging our country’s football development. http://m.goal.com/x/en-ng/news/5181246/ |
Morocco has denied that it had withdrawn hosting of the 2015 AFCON. The North African country however insists that they still want the tournament postponed, forcing a conflict with organisers. The Confederation of African Football has maintained its stance that the tournament, to be held between January 17 and February 8, must go ahead as planned. The ebola virus has claimed more than 4,000 lives since the start of the year, and with around a million spectators expected to travel to watch the tournament, Morocco sports minister Mohamed Ouzzine reiterated the country’s desire to for a postponement. “Our concern is the health of Africa, and based on WHO [World Health Organisation] reports and guidelines, we have to listen,” he said. “Zero safety does not exist, but one has to take the necessary precautions so that the coming tournament will be a football feast, bringing together our African brothers, but given the current ebola situation we don’t think such a feast can take place as expected. https://www.thenationonlineng.net/new/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/Morocco.jpg “I don’t think there is any state or any country that has the necessary capabilities to monitor, check and control the current ebola situation when faced with these numbers. This is our real problem. We don’t have a problem with visiting teams, we have a problem with visitors.” www.thenationonlineng.net/new/morocco-denies-pulling-out-as-hosts-of-2015-afcon/ |
mods must explain what happened to this thread www.nairaland.com/1952705/morocco-officially-withdraw-hosting-nations |
braine:Why Bro? |
Host of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, Morocco on Thursday officially informed Confederation of African Football (CAF) that they are no longer willing to host the bi-annual tournament. The North African country had earlier asked CAF to postpone the tournament due to the spread of Ebola virus in parts of West Africa. However, the continental football body had insists that the tournament will go on in January 2015 as originally scheduled. Morocco has now informed CAF that the tournament pose a health and security risk to its citizens if it should hold on the earlier agreed date and since both parties could not reach a compromise they are no longer interested in hosting the competition. Morocco’s withdrawal puts CAF in a desperate position. With less than three months to go to the kickoff of the 2015 Nations Cup, the continental football governing body is yet to announce replacement for the North African country. Already, host of the 2013 edition, South Africa have been tipped to rescue CAF from this quagmire as they seem to most prepare to host the tournament on such a short notice. www..com/morocco-officially-withdraw-from-hosting-nations-cup# |

Super Eagles midfielder John Obi Mikel has described Saturday’s outing in Khartoum as a nightmare as Nigeria failed to get anything right despite the energy and effort put in. Mikel who has come under the hammer in recent times for supposed pedestal performances for the national team stated that it was wrong for people to say the Eagles don’t deserve to be at next year’s Nations Cup in Morocco. “Why I can’t still believe how and why we lost that game it’s important to move ahead and for those saying we don’t deserve to be in Morocco, I think that is unfortunate and we must stop spreading that negativity because it gets to the team. The pitch we played in was awful. You can’t move, the ball bounces when you want to control it and when you shoot it goes the wrong direction, it was a nightmare playing on that pitch”, he said. Mikel and his colleagues will hope they will get their acts right on Wednesday as they on Sudan again at the Abuja National Stadium. www..com/mikel-reaveals-khartoum-nightmare |
ROSSIKE:Cool.. But, I'm pretty sure we've played nothing less than 20 matches between that time and now. |
What beats my imagination is how Nigerians tend to predict scores like 3:1, 4:1 in favour of Nigeria before a match starts. I cant just help but wonder the last time Nigeria scored. 4 goals in a match. |
You forgot to add that its "airplane mode" must be able to take me on vacation to various countries. |
A man beheaded one woman and stabbed another at an Oklahoma food processing plant from which he had just been fired today, authorities said. Alton Nolen was reportedly fired from Vaughan Foods in Moore, Okla., this morning and drove directly from the human resources office to another building in the facility and attacked two women in the front office, police said. Nolen "became angry" after being fired, the Moore Police Department said in a statement. 2 Killed in Alabama UPS Shooting Were Supervisors There are no apparent ties to terrorism. The FBI is now involved in the case and were called in by the local police "due to the manner of death and the initial statements of co- workers," according to the Moore Police Department. "After conducting interviews with Nolen's co-workers, information was obtained that he recently started trying to convert several employees to the Muslim religion," police said in a statement. Nolen, 30, attacked his first alleged victim, 54-year-old Colleen Hufford, with a knife that is regularly used by employees at the plant, police said. Nolen severed Hufford's head and then began stabbing Traci Johnson, 43, multiple times, police said. Nolen was then shot by the company's chief operating officer, Mark Vaughan, who is also a reserve sheriff's deputy, according to the Moore Police Department. Both Nolen and Johnson have been hospitalized, police said. The FBI is now involved in the case and were called in by the local police "due to the manner of death and the initial statements of co- workers," according to the Moore Police Department. The police department responded with a tactical team and treated it as an active shooter incident because the person who called police was unsure where the gunshots came from, police said. ABC News consultant and former senior FBI agent Brad Garrett, who has extensive experience in criminal profiling, said that on the surface the incident appears to be "workplace violence." "It's within the realm of reasonableness that this is ISIS-related, but you have to go back to the motive, and the motive was he was mad," Garrett said, referring to the militant group linked to the recent beheading of two American journalists. Vaughan Foods spokesperson Danielle Katcher said in a statement that "we are shocked and deeply saddened by the events of today." "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families and friends of the team member we lost and all those affected," Katcher added. "Our focus is on the safety and well-being of our employees. We will provide counseling and support for our team members and support each other through this difficult time." "We are working with authorities on this active investigation," Katcher said. http://abcnews.go.com/US/fired-oklahoma-food-plant-employee-beheads-woman-attacks/story?id=25780332 |

A federal air marshal is in quarantine in Houston today after being attacked last night by an unknown assailant at the Lagos, Nigeria airport wielding a syringe. U.S. law enforcement officials told ABC News they were alarmed by the bizarre, unprovoked attack because the assailant was apparently able to inject an unknown substance into the back of one of the air marshal’s arms. The air marshal was traveling with a team of other marshals when the attack took place in an unsecured area of the airport terminal in Lagos, the officials said. He was able to board the United Airlines flight to Houston he was scheduled to work and was met early this morning in Houston by FBI agents and health workers from the Centers for Disease Control ( CDC). Amid fears the substance could contain some form of the Ebola virus, the air marshal was immediately put into quarantine. The FBI said he was screened "on-scene... out of an abundance of caution." An FBI spokesperson said, “The victim did not exhibit any signs of illness during the flight and was transported to a hospital upon landing for further testing. None of the testing conducted has indicated a danger to other passengers." Health experts say most infectious agents would not immediately manifest or make the patient contagious. While the unknown assailant ran away and could not be located, officials said the other air marshals on the team were able to secure the needle and bring it on the flight for testing in the U.S. U.S. air marshals travel undercover in plain clothes and it would not be immediately obvious to an attacker that his target was an American law enforcement agent, officials say. “While there is no immediate intelligence to confirm this was a targeted attack, this is our reminder that international cowards will attempt to take sneaky lethal shots at our honorable men and women abroad,” said Jon Adler, the national president of the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association. The Lagos airport has long been considered a possible target for the terror group Boko Haram which has conducted a series of deadly attacks across Nigeria. www.abcnews.go.com/International/us-air-marshal-quarantine-syringe-attack-nigeria/story?id=25353527 |
A respiratory illness that has already sickened more than a thousand children in 10 states is likely to become a nationwide problem, doctors say. The disease hasn't been officially identified but officials suspect a rare respiratory virus called human enterovirus 68. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention_" target="_blank">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the virus is related to the rhinovirus, which causes the common cold. According to Mark Pallansch, director of the Division of Viral Diseases at the CDC, similar cases to the ones in Colorado have been cropping up across the U.S. At least 10 states -- Missouri, Kansas, Illinois, Kentucky, Iowa, Colorado, Ohio, Oklahoma, North Carolina, and Georgia -- have reported suspected outbreaks of human enterovirus 68 and requested CDC support. "Viruses don't tend to respect borders," ABC News Chief Health and Medical Editor Dr. Richard Besser said. "It is only 10 states now, but it's going to be across the country. So if your state doesn't have it now, watch for it, it's coming." Doctors say they are not even sure yet how this particular virus spreads, though the back-to-school season is a normal time for illnesses to spread among children. "This is a very common time for outbreaks. Kids come back to school, they like to share things, they bring them home to their little brothers and sisters, and enteroviruses tend to occur in the summer," Besser said. "But this one, this particular Enterovirus 68, is very rare and they have no idea why it showed up this year." At Children's Hospital Colorado in Denver, officials say that between Aug. 18 and Sept. 4, doctors saw more than 900 pediatric patients with symptoms of the respiratory virus in the emergency room. Of those who came in, 86 were admitted into the hospital and a handful ended up in the intensive care unit. "It can start just like a cold -- runny nose, sneezing, coughs -- but it's the wheezing you have to watch out for," Besser said. Dr. Christine Nyquist, a pediatrician at Children's Hospital Colorado, said the virus usually ends up appearing similar to a severe cold but can be particularly dangerous for children with asthma because of how it affects the respiratory system. "The kids are coming in with respiratory symptoms, their asthma is exacerbated," Nyquist said. "Kids with no wheezing are having wheezing." Doctors Probe Polio-Like Illness in California Life Saving Dog Sniffs Out Girl's Disease Girl 'Cured' Of HIV at Birth Now Has Virus At Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children, Dr. Raju Meyappan, a pediatric critical care physician, said he's seen at multiple children end up in the pediatric intensive care unit after being infected with the virus and that children under the age of 5 or those with asthma appear to be most at risk. In one particularly severe case, Meyappan said a 13-year-old asthmatic patient ended up in the emergency room just one day after showing basic cold-like symptoms, including cough and runny nose. His asthma became so severe on the second day the teenager turned blue and was rushed to the emergency room, where doctors gave him an emergency breathing tube. The patient was one of multiple asthmatic pediatric patients who ended up sedated in the intensive care unit with a breathing tube, Meyappan said. Patients who needed breathing tubes spent between four to seven days sedated and intubated as they recovered, he said. "As a pediatric ICU doctor, we try our best not to intubate kids with asthma at any point in time," said Meyappan, who added that only the most severe cases warranted intubation. "They all needed it. The onset [of the virus] is severe." Meyappan said currently four patients were in the pediatric ICU recovering. There are multiple reasons why the outbreak was hitting Denver now, instead of later in the fall or winter when flu .htm" id="ramplink_cold and flu_" target="_blank">cold and flu infections start to rise, Nyquist said. In addition to school starting, Nyquist said, some children with asthma could have seasonal allergies that are exacerbated by the virus. "Any kind of viral infection can kick off wheezing and asthmas," she said. "People with asthma know what triggers their asthma. A viral infection is one thing and this is the one that is circulating." To stay healthy, the CDC recommends basic sanitary practices to avoid spreading the virus, including washing hands, avoiding those who are sick, and covering the nose and mouth during sneezes or coughs. Meyappan said parents of asthmatic children should make sure that their children's inhalers are easily accessible and that there is a treatment plan in place if an asthma attack continues to get worse. "Make sure [parents] talk to all their caregivers about what to do if [the child has] an asthma attack and where to go if they need help," Meyappan said. "I think having a game plan in place helps." abcnews.go.com/Health/unidentified-respiratory-virus-hit-kids-country/story?id=25334106 |
