Emenike fined after race slur Posted: 2012-04-02 10:58 Super Eagles and Spartak Moscow forward Emmanuel Emenike has been fined $17,000 for an obscene gesture towards fans of Dynamo Moscow during a Russian Premier League derby last week after he was racially abused. The Russian FA also slammed a suspended sentence on the former Fenerbahce player until the end of the season for pointing his middle finger in the direction of the opponents’ fans. “We decided that it was an adequate punishment,” deputy chairman of the Russian FA ethics committee, Vladimir Vasilyev, said on Friday. “We also took into account the fact that the player later apologised for his action.” The 24-year-old striker – who joined Spartak last summer from Fenerbahce for a fee of £10m – said he was racially abused and therefore temporarily lost his mind. “I never experienced a similar situation and never faced such racist insults. Fans of Dynamo constantly whistled as soon as I got to the ball, and I found myself next to them,” Emenike was quoted as saying on the club’s official website. “Now I understand perfectly the feelings experienced by Roberto Carlos and Christopher Samba when they were hit by bananas. Is it any wonder that Samba lost his nerve, and he threw a banana back at the podium in the direction of the offender?” he asked. Emenike said “he was sorry he could not hold back his temper” towards Dynamo fans, who were making monkey noises when the Nigeria international touched the ball. Racism remains a major issue in Russia, with numerous incidents reported recently involving players such as Anzhi’s Roberto Carlos from Brazil and Christopher Samba from Congo. Fifa and UEFA have stated their concern, especially in advance of the 2018 World Cup set to be held in Russia. Colin Udoh |
Keshi quits over Saintfiet Posted: 2012-04-01 09:49 Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi has handed in his resignation in protest at the appointment of Belgian Tom Saintfiet as Technical Director. Keshi, who flew out to the USA last week, sent in his resignation by telegram, claiming it was an insult on Nigerian coaches to employ a European ahead of qualified indigenous candidates. "This is a difficult decision for me, but I am speaking on behalf of Nigerian coaches and even other African coaches in their own countries," Keshi said in his telegram delivered by his representative Apre Folo. "We have qualified candidates here in Nigeria, but the NFF chose to hire a European. "I cannot work under such conditions. So, as much as it pains me, I have decided to take the painful decision to step aside until the right thing is done." Folo, Keshi's representative, says the former Nigeria captain is determined to see this fight to the end as he seeks to get respect for Nigerian coaches. |
How would you transform your state or country? |
femi4:mata was selfish there, knowing his fellow country havent scored in ages, why not let torres take that penalty, |
What is the nonsense we now watch, i love the super eagles no matter if they lose or win, but my love for them is dying out, i use to brag that nigeria is still a force in african football, but now people are starting to laugh. Gone were the days when we had solid players in every position except useless rufai, then came joseph dosu who helped us win the olympic gold only for his career to be cut short in an accident. So my people lets discuss what can be done to bring back the super eagles? Every team in the world go through phases, i mean look at the brazilian team of yesterday do you really think they have the chance to win the world cup on home soil? |
60min still 0-0 |

At least 73 people have been killed in fan clashes following a football match in the Egyptian city of Port Said, state television reports. The deaths occurred after supporters invaded the pitch following a match between top-tier clubs Masry and al-Ahly on Wednesday. It is feared the death toll could rise as scores have been injured. It is the biggest disaster in the country's football history, said the Egyptian deputy health minister. Some of the dead were security officers, the Associated Press quoted a morgue official as saying. The BBC's Jon Leyne in Cairo says it appears fans had taken knives into the stadium. Our correspondent says the lack of the usual level of security in the stadium might have contributed to the clashes. Police in Egypt have been keeping a much lower profile since last year's popular protests that ousted President Hosni Mubarak from power. Bitter rivalry Television pictures have shown images of crowds descending into the stadium, chasing rival fans and players. Some were cornered in the stadium, parts of which were set on fire. Egyptian fans are notoriously violent, says our correspondent, particularly supporters of al-Ahly known as the Ultras. They have been heavily implicated in the political confrontations recently, our correspondent adds. Wednesday's violence broke out at the end of the match, which, unusually, the Port Said side Masry won 3-1. As match ended, their fans flooded onto the pitch attacking Ahly players and fans. If you look at the squad in the 90s 1994 - 2000 we had less yoruba footballers on the team, mostly igbos and hausa players, igbo players are the footballing playing tribe in nigeria, simply as that. Get back to the roots |
