This is another case of outright arrogance on the part of the Dutch goverment. Nigeria need to reply by forcing Shell to clean up their mess or get the hell out of our shores. The only language the whiteman understands is that of "you hit me I hit you harder". |

Smh. I do understand you, but we cannot afford to be cynical. Nigeria was better economically than many east European countries, but in the last two decades following the defeat of communism, they've really bounced back. Those governments didn't archieve their current status by taking populist decisions, but by implementing painful economic policies, that sometimes seems inhumane. We must accept that in the race to modernise Nigeria, there are going to be a lot of painful decision taken by our governments. |

To me, you are one of the Nigerians without conscience.
Let's assume it is even a lie, why the indefatigable support or position?
Even if SRs is corrupt, it is a reflection of the ever pervasive corruption in Nigeria.
And you left the substance of the matter and by engaging in this cheap blackmail.
If SRs is corrupt, create a thread for that.
I want to believe you are wiser than what you are doing here.
Remember, it is our country and we want it to be better than what we have now. No, I think your blind support for SR is unhealthy. In as much as we want our press to do their job, we also want them to report well researed stories. No gossip, no hearsay, and btw reports like this are actually no helping our situation. Foreigners, when refering to corruption in Nigeria don't say "Nigerian elites are corrupt," they say "Nigerians or Nigeria is a corrupt country". Our leaders are just a mere reflection of who we are. |

cap28: There is nothing honorable, democratic or sincere about european politicians its just that they've got you africans fooled - first of all democracy as is practised in the western world is merely a game - the western polticians are not independent but are merely front men for the real power brokers who operate behind the scenes, the real power lies in the hands of the international banking cartels which are run and owned by a few powerful european families - they also have controlling shares in all of the major multinationals this powerful elite known as the 1 % own and control the world's banking system they also control their various politicians - the polticians are merely glorified managers who implement policies created by this powerful group, they use the mirage of democracy to fool people in the west into thinking that they have a say on how their govts are run but these various political parties merely serve the same master - in the UK new labour and the tories are on the same side and are all serving the city of london who control the worlds financial markets, in the US the democrats and republicans are both servants of wall street and the multinational corporations - the elections are just a circus that they put on every four years to fool people into thinking that their vote counts - it doesnt - its either you vote in one of the two pre selected candidates or abstain from voting - independents never win presidential seats in america because they are not selected by the power brokers at the top who control everything, the same thing in the UK - prime ministers are all vetted and pre selected by the establishment (the power brokers).
therefore Berlusconi's decision to resign has nothing to do with him being an honorable man but more to do with the fact that he is no longer of any use to the power brokers who selected him to run the country for 17 years.
The western politicians run a criminal organisation on behalf of the real power brokers who finance their election campaigns and dictate govt policy, any politician who refuses to tow the line is deselected and gets thrown out of office - there are many ways to make a politician fall out of favour with the voters - you can dig up a lot of dirt on him and use it to blackmail him or you can have him meet with an accident - JFK tried to disengage from a pre determined script which had been written for him by the power brokers and they had him executed in full view of the public, so stop thinking that these people are honorable men , if you only knew the half of what these people are involved in you would recoil in horror.
the reason your african leaders spend 10, 20 and even 30 years in office in some cases is because they are selected and installed by western powers - they are allowed to stay as long as they want because they are there to open up african economies and allow western corporations to exploit the natural resources of these various countries. The only time that african leaders are toppled is when they fall out of favour with their western god fathers, you should ask yourself why western nations continue to arm these tyrants - isnt it obvious that they do so in order to enable these tyrants defend themselves from any opposing groups who might want to topple them.
the western powers do not give a damn about you having a democratic system of govt because if you did it would stand in the way of their objective which is to exploit and drain away your natural resources. the only way they can acheive that objective is to have an african collaborator in office for as long as possible, so stop fooling yourselves - the western powers are not your friends and they do not want anything positive for your economy or your people all they want is to continue to have access to your natural resources at the cheapest price possible. Gbam! |

Guk: @sweet9ja, Sit down there and think other nations are waiting for you. Ghana has started converting their domestic terminal to accommodate increase in Airlines flying into Ghana. AERO's ticketing desk has been moved to the domestic terminal and a dividing wall on the 1st floor opened up to connect to the International Wing.
Virgin Atlantic started operations in Ghana just last year and i have been on flights to London with scores of Nigerians onboard who came to catch the flight from Lagos.
one of the reasons United started flying into Nigeria late last year was because a sizable number of their patrons were from Nigeria coming over to catch direct flight to Washington DC.
In 3rd week August this year, my AERO plane had over 100 Nigerian young adults who were going back to resume school in Ghana. A major indictment on our educational system & you people are busy hailing ignorant leaders My brother, I have nothing against our sister country, Ghana, developping, I only want to draw your attention to the fact that, Kotoka cannot handle the share volume of traffic that will supposedly move from MM. Moreover, Britain may not want escalate this very issue to affect the economic and diplomatic relationship it enjoys with Nigeria. |

1forall: To those hailing the move by the Nigerian authorities, its a shame that many of the arguments here are just plain lame.
Guk described it as 'cutting one's nose to spite one's face' and couldn't be more right. I doubt those authorities thought the effects of their action through before announcing their cowardly move.
What concerns BA with Arik's problems? What would it have taken them to open negotiations with the British Authorities? Were any mediatory steps taken before they decided on the drastic action? I guess not, who in his right mind would compare London Heathrow with Lagos MM?
If these guys (Min of Aviation, NCAA, FAAN) understood a bit more of the competition and politics of landing at Heathrow maybe they would have judged the situation better and made a smarter move instead. Even between BA and its local rivals Virgin Atlantic, a whole lot of politicking and tussling has transpired with the Heathrow slots. But I trust my people, no tact, no analysis, just straight 'abeg reduce their flights' action. In the current arrangement who needs who more? In the early 80's, Malaysia, then a backwater in Asia, banned British goods and services, because of issues like this. Britain in the end, was forced to negotiate and deal with Malaysia on equal terms. |
Travel › Re: FG Slashes British Airway's Flights To Nigeria by sweet9ja: 4:01pm On Nov 03, 2011 |
Guk: For someone who has flown to and fro London from Ghana because the taxes are less than Nigeria's and paying less than =N=20k return on AERO to Ghana to connect those flights, BA will simple do deal with AERO & Air Nigeria, increase their slots to Ghana and move people seamlessly over the xmas period.
Ghana will benefit; Nigerians will travel with just a 45 minute inconvience; BA will continue to thrive; our politicians will still use BA 1st Class & uninformed ones on NL will keep hailing the politicians, what a shame!!!! You're assuming Kotoka has the capacity to absorb the extra flights. |

The general decay in Nigeria cannot be blamed on pop culture and individualism alone. How about the negetive role imported religions have played in the uprooting of our beautiful and vibrant culture? Like Chinua Achebe wrote; "They've put a knife in thing that held us together and we've all falling apart". I believe that in order to move forward, we must go back to being who we really are: Nigerians. That means reviving our embattled culture and being proud and comfortable with ourselves. Because a people without a culture is like a body without a soul. |

@Jason,Beaf well done. These photos lovely and authentic. We know there are still a lot to be done but, we are definitely on the way. Let those who rather see pix of slums go to the slums, they know where to find them. We are and we will continue to put are best foot forward. Waffi no carry last.PapaBrowne: Warri is definitely better than majority of the cities in Nigeria. Infact asides Lagos, PH and Abuja, I don't think there is any other city with the quantum of prosperity that avails in Warri. Warri has the second highest per capita GDP in Nigeria after Abuja. Warri is a multi billion dollar city with huge investments employing tens of thousands of people such as the Delta Steel Complex, Warri Refinery, EGTL and a host of others. Warri has the highest number of hotels per capita in Nigeria after Abuja- ie number of hotels per population. The number of new hotels springing up on a daily is a sign of the economic prosperity that pervades the city! The new Protea hotel in Warri is not only the best Protea hotel in the country, it is definitely one of the best boutique hotels anywhere in West Africa. And guess what, despite the cheapest room being almost 40,000 naira per night, the hotel experiences more than 70% occupancy rate. Warri is definitely one of the best cities to live in Nigeria. Salaries are high. Jobs are many compared with most Nigerian cities. Economic activity is robust!
Now, this is for all the haters: Warri is better than all the cities in the south west. Whether na Ibadan, Osogbo,Ogbomosho,Ile-ife, Akure, Abeokuta, Ado Ekiti et al .I've been in many of these places and I know. In fact many of these cities would be third rate if they were in Delta State as they can't compete with even Asaba.
To put things in better perspective, the city of Warri alone flies more Air passengers than all of the 5 South West states combined. That is despite the fact that there are 3 other major airports within a 3 hr radius- Benin, Asaba, PH. Lagos is not classified as a south west state.
Warri is better than all the cities in the North Central- Ilorin, Jos, Makurdi, Lokoja, Okenne you name it!
Warri is better than all the cities in the North East- Maiduguri, damaturu, bauchi,Yola, Jalingo, just call am!! Warri better pass!
It's only Kaduna and Kano in the North that can do any competition with Warri.
In the South East there are a couple good cities like Enugu and Owerri so I would leave out the south east from my comparisons!!
Warri is a lovely city and Wafarians love the city! Uduaghan started well but appears to have lost focus. But to classify him as one of the worst Governors in the country is taking it too far. Even Oshiomole who appears to be working has actually worked on only about 4 roads in the whole of Benin! The roads in Benin City, which happens to be the home of my ancestors remains worse of than those in Warri, despite the fact that Oshiomole is said to be working!
I would be adding more beautiful pictures soon for the haters to keep hating!! You said it all. |
