This is an outrageous claim and if such a thing happened we would expect multiple independent confirmations. As it is, not even the other Gospels support this occurrence. Either the author of Matthew completely fabricated this story to fulfill some OT prophecies, every single record of the event was hunted down and destroyed, or God use a Men-in-Black memory wiping device to make everyone in Jerusalem forget it happened at all. That Matthew asserts this as a factual occurence (I have absolutely no idea how this could be construed as anything other than Matthew being literal) in spite of absolutely 0 supporting evidence, whether secular or Christian, is ridiculous. If Matthew was willing to spin such a humongous lie and present it as truth, why should we take it seriously? As an extension of Christian dogma that the each of the Gospels are an accurate representation of Jesus' life and the authors were guided by the Holy Spirit, why should we take ANY of them seriously in light of the obvious falsehood in Matthew?
At this point my theory isn't that the authors of the Gospels were mistaken, but that they are actually just liars. Its too deliberate to be simple mistakes.
