PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari has barred his wife and the members of his family from using the aircraft in the presidential fleet as part of an ongoing campaign to cut down of government spending at to arrest abuse of public facilities.

Elected on a promise to fight graft in public life and combat the growing menace of nepotism and abuse of office, President Buhari has been cutting perks for officials. When he travels abroad, he uses a much smaller entourage than was previously the case and those not officially invited are made to pay their own flight costs and clear their hotel bills.

Taking this campaign a step further, President Buhari has insisted that his wife Hadjiya Aisha Buhari and his children use commercial flights when travelling. Members of President Buhari's family will now use commercial flight, unless it becomes compelling for them to fly in a presidential aircraft.

Earlier this month, the president made sure that when his wife and three children performed the lesser hajj to Mecca, they used Emirates Airlines to make the trip. It is believed that the president is worried about security reports on the high cost of maintaining the presidential aircraft and the abuse of the privilege by some highly-placed Nigerians.

During the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan, about N9.08bn (£29m) was spent yearly to maintain the 10 aircraft in the Presidential Air Fleet. Members of President Jonathan's family and his close associates regularly used the aircraft in the fleet for routine trips that could have been made using commercial flights.

One presidency source said: “President Buhari has adopted a strict policy on the use of presidential aircraft in order to save cost. His wife and relations have been restricted from the use of the aircraft in the presidential fleet.

“A situation where the aircraft were used anyhow by some friends and associates of the president during the administration of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan can no longer be applicable in this dispensation. For example, the wife of the president, Hadjiya Aisha Buhari and three children travelled for the lesser hajj in Saudi Arabia on Emirates Airlines."

He added that President Buhari is determined to ensure the judicious use of the presidential aircraft to save costs. In addition, President Buhari is also setting a new template for governance and may use commercial flights for some of his own trips.

Another source added: “Do you know that it costs about N747m (£2.4m) to fuel the aircraft in the presidential fleet per annum. President Buhari said his administration cannot afford such a luxury.

“US President, Barrack Obama uses only two Boeing jets and one helicopter, so Buhari is determined to cut costs. In any case, he lives an austere life and if he can ask his wife to fly a commercial jet, then other public officers must emulate his standard.”

It was not yet clear if the president will sell some of the aircraft in the Presidential Air Fleet as being speculated. Nigeria's presidential fleet has more aircraft than most airlines in the country, second in size only to the nation's largest carrier Arik Air.

The three-member tribunal held that Mr. Ishaku was not validly nominated as candidate of the PDP and therefore did not qualify, from start, to contest the governorship election.
Specifically, the tribunal held that the governorship primaries purportedly conducted by the PDP in the state was done in violation of section 78 (b) (1)(2) of the Electoral Act which guides parties nomination to the position of governorship candidate.

The spokesperson of the party in the state, Chukwuemeka Eze, confirmed the development to PREMIUM TIMES.
“Yes Hon. Dakuku Peterside was unanimously endorsed in a peaceful atmosphere. It was done in a family affair and there was no bickering at all,” Mr. Eze said.
He also said by the decision of the caucus, the forthcoming party primary in Rivers State is expected to merely confirm the selection of Mr. Peterside as a formality.
Also, the Rivers APC Chairman, Davies Ikanya, who addressed the press after the meeting at the party’s secretariat in Port Harcourt, said the decision of the caucus is not final as primary election will still have to be held to ratify the decision.
“There must be primary elections for all positions in the APC. So, we will not jump the gun,” he said.

The 2016 Republican front-runner said in a 1998 commencement speech that he thought the Great Pyramids of Giza were built by Joseph, the figure in the Bible, to store grains — not to bury the Pharaohs, as historians and archaeologists have widely concluded.

“My own personal theory is that Joseph built the pyramids to store grain,” Carson said during the speech at Andrews University, a school that is associated with the Seventh Day Adventist Church. “Now all the archaeologists think that they were made for the Pharaohs’ graves.”

“But, you know, it would have to be something awfully big if you stop and think about it. And I don’t think it’d just disappear over the course of time to store that much grain,” he is seen saying in the video of speech, which was first reported on by Buzzfeed.

“And when you look at the way that the pyramids are made, with many chambers that are hermetically sealed, they’d have to be that way for various reasons,” added Carson, who, according to several recent national polls, is the front-runner in the race for the 2016 GOP nomination. “And various scientists have said, ‘Well, you know there were alien beings that came down and they have special knowledge and that’s how—’ you know, it doesn’t require an alien being when God is with you.”

Archaeologists widely agree the ancient Egyptians built the pyramids as tombs for their Pharaohs.

That, however, hasn’t convinced Carson to back away from the view, which he expressed 17 years ago.

"It is still my belief, yes," Carson told CBS News Thursday when asked about the speech.

The comments aren't the first time the retired pediatric neurosurgeon has ignited controversy with something he said.

Carson has, over the past several years, said he wouldn’t support a Muslim President, compared Obamacare to slavery, claimed Jews in Europe could have avoided the Holocaust if they had been armed, and alleged that “straight” people who enter prison exit “gay.”

Ben Carson has been caught in a lie so huge his campaign can't even spin it, instead having to just admit that yes, it's an outright lie.

Ben Carson’s campaign on Friday admitted, in a response to an inquiry from POLITICO, that a central point in his inspirational personal story was fabricated: his application and acceptance into the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

The academy has occupied a central place in Carson’s tale for years. According to a story told in Carson’s book, “Gifted Hands,” the then-17 year old was introduced in 1969 to Gen. William Westmoreland, who had just ended his command of U.S. forces in Vietnam, and the two dined together. That meeting, according to Carson’s telling, was followed by a “full scholarship” to the military academy.

West Point, however, has no record of Carson applying, much less being extended admission.

“In 1969, those who would have completed the entire process would have received their acceptance letters from the Army Adjutant General,” said Theresa Brinkerhoff, a spokeswoman for the academy. She said West Point has no records that indicate Carson even began the application process. “If he chose to pursue (the application process) then we would have records indicating such,” she said.

When presented with this evidence, Carson’s campaign conceded the story was false.
