Rotimi was born to an Ijaw mother and a Yoruba father, and cultural diversity was a frequent theme in his work. Educated in Nigeria in Port Harcourt and Lagos, he traveled to the United States in 1959 to study at Boston University. After receiving a B.A. in fine arts in 1963, he attended the Yale School of Drama (M.A., 1966), concentrating on playwrighting. Upon returning to Nigeria in the 1960s, he taught at the Universities of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) and Port Harcourt. His later dramas include The Gods Are Not to Blame (produced 1968; published 1971), a retelling of the Oedipus myth in imagistic blank verse; Kurunmi and the Prodigal (produced 1969; published as Kurunmi, 1971), written for the second Ife Festival of Arts; Ovonramwen Nogbaisi (produced 1971; published 1974), about the last ruler of the Benin empire; and Holding Talks (1979). SYNW SET TO CREATE ACHEBE’S CORNER IN THIRTY SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN OYO STATE As part of our aims and objectives of celebrating both the living and dead authors. SYNW is now set to create Achebe’s Corner in thirty secondary schools across Oyo State. The Society will be donating the Corner with the Chinua Achebe Fact Finder CD – compilations of Achebe’s interview, thesis, essays, dissertations, criticisms and appraisal of his works as well as postals and electronic books of over two hundred and fifty well known authors across the globe. Also two hundred literary e-books in French Language featuring French famous poets, playwrights and novelists. This is another initiative of the Society in conjunction with Alliance Francaise, Iyaganku, Ibadan, Oyo State. The Society is doing this in order to honour, remember and appreciate the literary works of the Late Professor Chinua Achebe who passed away recently at the ripeful age of 82 years. This is not the first time the Society will be organizing an event of this type. In the last two years, we have celebrated Prof. Remi Raji with a National Poetry Competition. Late D.O. Fagunwa with the Fagunwa Night event. Anthony Ebika with poetry contest. Ify Omalicha Agwu and Sesan Ajayi with a poetry anthology titled “Songs of Sorrow” and lastly, Chief Obafemi Awolowo with a poetry anthology tagged “Songs of Freedom” and inauguration of Paperless Libraries and Book Clubs (Digital Libraries) in some selected public and private secondary schools in Oyo State and Osun State respectively. To us, the impact of Achebe to the development of Literature in Ibadan through MBARI MBAYO should not be underrated. He wrote seventy percent of his internationally acclaimed novel “Things Fall Apart” in Ibadan during his school days, that is why we are honouring him with this project. We have already published an anthology titled “Silent Voices” – Collection of Poems by young poets from Nigeria and Zimbabwe in honour of the late Professor Chinua Achebe. Another initiative of the Society in collaboration with the Girl Child Creativity Concept of Zimbabwe. Using a day literary programme in honouring Achebe is not sufficient. Achebe is a legend and maestro. It is very painful that his alma mata – University of Ibadan has not set up any project in his honour and memory. We are proposing this to them (University of Ibadan) to establish “Chinua Achebe Literary Park/Garden where writers from the academic communities and authors from outside the school can read, criticize, showcase and promote their works. We are also working seriously to make sure Oyo State Government do the same in honouring the late literary legend. Wole Adedoyin National President |

SYNW AND IBC TO DISTRIBUTE E-BOOKS TO SOME SELECTED SCHOOLS IN OYO STATE. The Society of Young Nigerian Writers in collaboration with Ibadan Book Club will be giving out DVDs that contains 250 literary books, mainly novels, collection of plays, anthologies by popular, notable and renowned dead authors like John Bunyan, William Wordsworth, Oliver Goldsmith, William Shakespeare, Oliver Cromwell, William Shakespeare, Oliver Cromwell, Percy Byshe Shelley, John Keats, Adams Smith, Karl Marx, Engel, Jane Austen, Emily Bronte, Charlotee Bronte, Charles Dickens, H.G Wells, Hemingway, Rudyard Kipling, Olaudah Equiano etc. The books which their copyrights had expired after 70 years of the demised of authors concerned. The 250 Literary E-Books per school project is an initiative of the Society of Young Nigerian Writers in collaboration with Ibadan Book Club toward promoting reading culture in Oyo State. Creative Writing and Literary Arts are depreciating values in the state and never forget that some ancient and famous literary groups started in the State. A group known as Mbari Mbayo an association of African artists, musicians, writers, and actors, the Mbari Mbayo Club began in Nigeria in 1961. Centered in the towns of Ibadan and Oshogbo, the club operates galleries and theaters and publishes African literature. The Mbari Mbayo Club provides its artists opportunities for recognition, creating local and international markets for their works. The Group which the Late Prof. Ulli Beier, Late Duro Ladipo, Prof. Wole Soyinka, Prof. Chinua Achebe and Christopher Okigbo started in Ibadan and Osogbo. It was also in Ibadan where Prof. Wole Soyinka wrote 50% of his books. The state has lost the glory it was known for before because the upcoming ones are finding it difficult to read and consult books on the shelves in their libraries. They spend 80% of their times on Facebook and phones thereby setting themselves backward in their studies. This is the gap we want to fill by bringing in 250 literary e-books per school project. The mission of the project includes grooming, developing, discovering and enhancing the reading skills and techniques of schools involved in the project. While the vision aims to encourage and educate public and private secondary schools in the state on the need to adopt and practice electronic/computerized library in their respective schools. The aims and objectives of the project are: i. to contribute towards the growth and development of reading culture in Oyo State through the use of Digital/Electronic Library. ii. to enhance the creative writing techniques of students toward National Development. iii. to encourage and educate public and private secondary school principals on the need to have an electronic/computerized library. iv. to create young writers clubs and book clubs in some selected schools in Oyo State. Some of the books are useful for preparing students toward NECO, JAMB and WAEC exams. The first twenty schools to benefit from the project are: Adesina Collage, Community High School, Alegongo, Bashorun Ojoo Senior High School, Islamic High School, St. Patrick’s Grammar School, Bashorun High School, Royal College, Oba Akinyele Memorial High School, Oke ‘badan Senior High School, Adeyemo Memorial College, Queen of Apostles, Oluyoro, Loyola College, Holy Trinity Grammar School, Methodist Grammar School, Emmanuel College, Humani Alaga High School, God’s Blessing International School, Community Grammar School, Oba Akinbiyi School 1, Oba Akinbiyi School II and St. Gabriel Commercial Grammar School. DR. MATHEW UMUKORO SHOULD STOP SPELLING HOME-BASED YOUNG NIGERIAN WRITERS BACKWARD – HIS INTERVIEW REVISITED It has become a customary habit of some accomplished writers in Nigeria especially among the academia to be suing faults or mistakes derived from works of the younger writers for their selfish interest (to gain more popularity). Five percent out of hundred percent accomplished Nigerian Writers can only boast of nurturing and mentoring their home-based young writers. Nowadays, home-based Young Nigerian Writers are now struggling to write, publish their works and even market them without any contribution or support from any accomplished writer. It is my belief that majority of this so-called accomplished Nigerian writers we are now reading and hearing today got their skills polished and enhanced by their literary predecessors. Prof. Ulli Beier of blessed memory helped Duro Ladipo to solicit for grants for some of his productions and establishment of Mbari Mbayo Writers Club in Osogbo. He also helped Late Kola Ogunmola for some of his theatrical productions. Prof. Wole Soyinka, Prof. Chinua Achebe, Christopher Okigbo, D.O. Fagunwa, Twins 77, Buraimoh, Amos Tutuola, also gained enormously from Prof. Ulli Beier of blessed memory. The so-called old/accomplished writers are the ones discouraging and diminishing the creative writing interest of some home-based young writers through their crazy, shabby literary philosophy they called literary criticism. To me, Literary Criticism is a tool use for developing, honing and enhancing the creative writing skill of a writer. It is one of the ingredients of Literature. But some people are misusing and misapplying this literary philosophy. They are using it for their selfish and personal interest. Dr. Mathew Umukoro of Theatre Arts Department, University of Ibadan is one of those people utilizing this literary technique at the disadvantage of home-based young Nigerian Writers. He likes spelling home-based young Nigerian writers backward. What Dr. Mathew Umukoro said regarding home-based young Nigerian writers during a television interview programme organized by a popular television station in Oyo State after a week he launched some collections of his works was very discouraging. Though, that was not his first time. According to one of my friends who watched the television interview, described Dr. Umukoro’s comments as disheartening and daunting. As he was saying that nowadays home-based young Nigerian writers are writing rubbish, jargons and that they are suffering from Grammar and Tenses diseases. Dr. Mathew Umukoro has been complaining bitterly about these issues for a very long time. I shall accept all his claims if he is ready to answer this following questions. 1. How many home-based young writers has he published or helped since the inception of his career as a Creative Writer? 2. How many collections of Creative Works has he published himself that are internationally acclaimed apart from Nana Olomu? 3. We want him to mention at least three home-based young Nigerian writers he has helped to achieve their vision of becoming a creative writer. If Dr. Mathew Umukoro do not have any correct answers to these questions that specify that he is lying and not up to the task of contributing to the growth and development of Nigerian Literature. Dr. Umukoro should stop embarazing our home-based young Nigerian writers. If he knows that their grammars and tenses are bad, it is not a bad idea for him to open a creative writing school or English Clinic and even organizing creative writing workshops in correcting their abnormalities and errors instead of going around and spelling them backward. I am also imploring other old/accomplished writers to desist from spelling home-based young Nigerian writers backward; instead they should find ways of solving their problems. At this juncture, I will like to give big kudos to Dr. Wale Okediran, Prof. Charles Nnolim, Mrs. Mabel Segun, Prof. Akachi Ezeigbo, Prof. Remi Raji, B.M. Dzukogi, Prof. Ademola Dasylva, Prof. Bode Sowande, Prof. Niyi osundare, Prof. Akinwumi Isola, Prof. Francis Egbokhare, Dr. Remi Adedokun, Mallam Denjah Abdulahi, Mr. Anthony Ebika, Dr. Bayo Adebowale for creating an enabling ground for some home-based young Nigerian writers to showcase their creative writing talents. |

THE CREDO OF BEING AND NOTHINGNESS IN ANA OYO The fact that the Association of Nigerian Authors is the only active writers body in the country presently with over thirty to thirty two state branches across the Federation should not be underrated . ANA OYO on the other hand is the first state chapter which was created in 1988. A landmark in the history of the Association of Nigerian Authors. According to some ANA OYO Historians, it was Mr. Jare Ajayi, a Journalist, Biographer and Poet who brought ANA into Oyo State. He alongside other members started the organization. They held meetings in places like the department of Theatre Arts, University of Ibadan- Institute of African Studies- University of Ibadan, Bode Sowande’s Odu Themes Meridian Hall, Late Chief Bola Ige’s residence, Late Chief Wale Ogunyemi’s residence, Educare Trust, NSIAC, Ibadan Cultural Studio to mention but few. ANA OYO has passed through the tenures of many Chairmen with names like: Mr. Jare Ajayi (the first Coordinator), Dr. Mathew Umukoro, Mrs. Adeola Akande, Prof. Remi Raji, Dr. Keye Abiona, Dr. Tony Marinho, Dr. Wale Okediran, Mr. Ebika Anthony,Mr. Abdulsalam el Mubashir and the present Chairman, Mr. Akin Bello. The State Chapter has recorded greater success in the National arm of the Association by producing three National Presidents namely, Prof. Femi Osofisan, Dr. Wale Okediran and Professor Remi Raji respectively. Also two General Secretaries namely, Professor Bode Sowande and Dr. Wale Okediran respectively. The success recorded by these great literary personalities had carried people away from focusing on the progress and downfall of ANA OYO. For the past four years now, from 2008-2012 ANA OYO has not being performing very well. It has recorded low-membership, low-attendance of members in meetings, absence of Secretary to attend to the Association’s activities, absence of Young Writers in meetings (to show their inability of reaching out to the younger ones), inadequate circulation of notice of meetings to members and no commitment in getting the works of the members published. For the past four years, the present Chairman of the Association of Nigerian Authors, Oyo State chapter cannot boast of publishing a single anthology of poems not to talk of the Chapter’s Newsletter. So many creative talents are dying in the state. No wonder that the present Vice-Chairman of ANA OYO resigned of his executive membership because of poor performance of the present administration. For almost three and half years now, ANA OYO members have been holding meetings in a restaurant, a beer parlour to describe which belongs to the present Chairman of the Association. It is the joy of every published writers in the country to hold a particular post in the administration of the Association of Nigerian Authors at both the state and the National level. But in Oyo State the story is different. Instead, people are running away from taking administrative posts. In 2011, it was recorded that only one person got the election form which eventually resulted in the postponement of the election and appointment of interim committee for three months. A great Association like ANA, why do people running away from getting posts, afterall service to ANA is free. I can boldly say that the good name of Prof. Remi Raji, the failure of Jerry Agada’s tenure, his joint ticket with Dzukogi and his impact on the Nigerian Literature won him the ANA Presidency position and not the support of his state chapter. Barely two months after Professor Remi Raji informed the State chapter of his interest in the Association of Nigerian Authors presidency, some ANA OYO members started accusing him of non-participation in ANA Monthly meetings and non payment of ANA annual dues. No wonder that Tade Ipadeola refused to mention some names of the present ANA OYO members when he said he knew genuine articles of Razak Gbolahan, Rotimi Babatunde, Yomi Ogunsanya, Kunle Okesipe, Benson Eluma, Niran Okewole, Uzo Dibia, Seyi Adigun. Where are the genuine articles of full ANA OYO members like Folorunsho Moshood, Akeem Ajibade, Abdulsalam el Mubashir, Femi Adedeji, Igudia Osarobu, Olusola Olatunji, Ebika Anthony to mention but few. Only two name are known to me – Kunle Okesipe and Rotimi Babatunde, who are full ANA OYO members out of the names Tade listed. Due to the bad administration of the incubent ANA OYO regime. Some strong pillars of ANA OYO have not been attending monthly meetings for the past three years. People like Prof. Femi Osofisan, Dr. Wale Okediran, Dr. Tony Marinho, Prof. Francis Egbokhare, Dr. Keye Abiona, Dr. Mathew Umukoro, Mr. Muyiwa Ojo, Tola Oyediran, Mr. Laolu Oguniyi, Dr. Bayo Adebowale to mention but few. Election Period Since ANA OYO election will be holding this coming November, im using this medium to appeal to all ANA OYO members to vote for responsible, dedicated and vissionary leaders who will restore back the lost glory of ANA OYO. Let all members beware of those visionless leaders who are good in preparing manifestoes that will convince people to vote for them but in the end, the will never achieve anything. Don’t let anybody use beer and pepper soup to buy your right. Vote for the right candidates. Members should also beware of people who will be vying for the chairmanship position. Like a case of a former Secretary of the Association in the state who because of loosing an election for the post of Chairmanship, went ahead and started another association he called Society of Writers in Nigeria. This is selfishness, such a person should not be given any chance to contest for any post. It is against the constitution of the Association. My advice to the next coming administration is to work towards achieving the followings: • Open a state secretariat for ANA . • Get ANA OYO at least a blog where they will post their contact addresses and monthly activities (getting their members updated). • Create at least a manual database of their members. • Reach out to the younger ones who have creative writing talents. • Organizing youth friendly activities. • Get an appropriate and conducive meeting venue – Restaurant is not O.K. • Call back some old members of ANA OYO. |

In a bid to make the faces of famous writers in the world known to younger ones in the country, the Society of Young Nigerian Writers has collected and designed over 2000 facial postals including profiles of world famous authors in the world. Mention any writer in China, England, USA, Russia, Germany, African Countries, Saudi Arabia, India SYNW has a lot of them. The Society is making a great difference in making writers accessible or known to the pubic. The major aim and objectives of the project is to make popular writers in the world facially known to the young ones in the country as the society will be going from one school to another exhibiting the postals. Though the postals have been exhibited in so many places like Oyo ANA Convention, Alliance Francaise’s Poetry Night and during our first creative writing workshop which was held in University of Ibadan.
