TEEN WRITERS ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIA (TWAN) An initiative of the Society of Young Nigerian Writers aim at enhancing, empowering and promoting literary works of teen writers in primary and secondary schools across the country WRITING AS A CAREER (SEVEN MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS BY TEEN WRITERS) WHO IS A WRITER/AUTHOR? A writer is a word-smith: a producer of the written word. The writer/author is someone who sets down idea in a written form or strings together words in a meaningful, attractive sequence to express an idea/opinion or to tell a story. The idea/opinion or story begins as though in the writer’s mind. It is then captured in motion and frozen in time for all eternity in one form or another (novel, poem, play, article, etc) thus, writing, like other forms of art (painting, sculpting, mimic etc) captures the drama and essence of human existence at any point in time. Which is why writers are distinguished mentors of Arts family? WHY DO WE WRITE? We write to share ideas and opinions with other people – to communicate our innermost thoughts to as many people as possible without having to be physically present. Writing (and reading of course) has remained the strongest, most enduring hall mark of civilization. Reading good books is like having conversations with the finest minds of the past (and of today). We may write to entertain, to educate or enlighten, to inform or simply to record a remarkable event, worthy life attainment or mutual occurrence in nature. Whatever the reason, a writer writes so as to share thoughts to communicate with others. WHAT DO WE WRITE? Writings, basically are of three genres: namely biographies, thrillers, fiction, adventures, science fiction and children’s literature are all prose. Poems of all sorts come under poetry while plays (as in tragedy, comedy, farce etc) come under drama. HOW DOES ONE BECOME A WRITER? Writing is like a calling – an innate gift that attains all consciousness and realization only when a person begins to write. One has either got it or hasn’t got it. It is said that every human being has a story lurking around in the mind or sub-conscious. But the ability to set it down in writing in a manner that others would enjoy reading it sets a writer apart. It is that innate ability to tell a story in writing that makes a writer. Nowadays, however, it is absolutely necessary and inevitable that a writer in order to be good at the craft should have in his/her skills through good, effective training. It is also essential for today’s writer to be up-to-date in Information Communication Technology and this also requires training. Further information, assistance and support on this can be accessed at your local Society of Young Nigerian Writers (SYNW) ANY OTHER THINGS REQUIRED TO BE A WRITER? Oh yes! Wide, up-to-date knowledge of the subject are one wants to write about and a keen interest, in broad horizon of the world around us are inevitable. Besides, a writers needs discipline, perseverance, courage and focus. Add to all these, a little bit of luck. WHO KNOWS? YOU MIGHT BE THE NEXT NOBEL LAUREATE THE WORLD IS WAITING TO CELEBRATE CAN ONE REALLY MAKE A LIVING AS A WRITER? To be truthful, it must be said, sadly, that very few people do. In now part of the world particularly if you feel the urge to write and fund it irresistible, learn a trade or take a job and keep writing. You might just get` a treak that will catapult you into the pro writers’ league and you may never have to look back. FINALLY, CAN SCIENCE STUDENTS ALSO BE A WRITER? Definitely, the past National President of the Association of Nigerian Authors (our own Wale Okediran) is a medical doctor, like T.M. Aluko who was an Engineer. So is Dr. Tony Marhino and many others. Remember, writing is like a calling: You’ve either got the time or you haven’t – irrespective of whatever one may be studying. REMEMBER: Writing is COMMUNICATION with the attribute of permanence (unlike the spoken word). So, good luck as you begins in the long journey towards being a writer. May the ink never dry on your pen! For more info contact the Acting National Coordinator – Idongesit Ifet – 07067102336, 07038421740 or Wole Adedoyin - 08072673852

Bola Ahmed Tinubu aka Jagaban (born 29 March 1952) was elected Senator for the Lagos West constituency in Lagos State, Nigeria in 1993, just before a military take-over in December 1993. After the return to democracy, he was elected governor of Lagos State, holding office from 29 May 1999 to 29 May 2007. He is an influential member of the All Progressives Congress party; he also holds both the chieftaincy of the Asiwaju of Lagos and that of the Jagaban of the Borgu Kingdom in the Northern Niger State of Nigeria. He is the National Leader of the All Progressive Congress (APC) party with president Gen Muhammadu Buhari (rtd). Background Bola Ahmed Adekunle Tinubu was born on 29 March 1952 in the city of Lagos. He attended St. John's Primary School, Aroloya, Lagos and Children's Home School in Ibadan. Tinubu went to the United States in 1975, where he studied first at Richard J. Daley College in Chicago, Illinois and then at Chicago State University. He graduated in 1979 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting. Tinubu worked for American companies Arthur Andersen, Deloitte, Haskins, & Sells, and GTE Services Corporation. After returning to Nigeria in 1983 BolaTinubu obtained work with Mobil Oil Nigeria, becoming an executive of the company. Early political career His political career began in 1992, when he was elected to the Nigerian Senate representing the Lagos West constituency in the short-lived Nigerian Third Republic. After the results of the 12 June 1993 presidential elections were annulled, Tinubu became a founding member of the pro-democracy National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), which mobilized support for the restoration of democracy and recognition of the 12 June results. He went into exile in 1994 and returned to the country in 1998 after the death of military dictator Sani Abacha, which ushered in a transition to civilian rule. In the run-up to the 1999 elections, Bola Tinubu was a protégé of Alliance for Democracy (AD) leaders Abraham Adesanya and Ayo Adebanjo. He won the AD primaries for the Lagos State gubernatorial elections in competition with Funsho Williams and Wahab Dosunmu, a former Minister of Works and Housing. In April 1999, he stood for the position of Executive Governor of Lagos State on the AD ticket and was elected. Lagos State governor When he assumed office in May 1999, Bola Ahmed Tinubu promised 10,000 housing units for the poor. During his eight-year period of office, he made large investments in education in the state. He also initiated new road construction, required to meet the needs of the fast-growing population of the state. The Oloye Tinubu, alongside a new deputy governor, Femi Pedro, won re-election to office as Governor in April 2003. All other states in the South West fell to the People's Democratic Party. He was involved in a struggle with the Federal government over whether Lagos State had the right to create new Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) to meet the needs of its large population. The controversy led to the Federal government seizing funds meant for local councils in the state. During the later part of his term in office, he was engaged in continuous clashes with PDP powers such as Adeseye Ogunlewe, a former Lagos State senator who became minister of works, and Bode George, southwest chairman of the PDP. Relations between Bola Tinubu and deputy governor Femi Pedro became increasingly tense after Pedro declared his intention to run for the gubernatorial elections. Femi Pedro competed to become the AC candidate for governor in the 2007 elections, but withdrew his name on the eve of the party nomination. He defected to the Labour Party while still keeping his position as deputy governor.[15] Tinubu's tenure as Lagos State Governor ended on 29 May 2007 when Babatunde Fashola of the Action Congress took office. Fashola had been Chief of Staff to Bola Tinubu. Later career In April 2007, after the elections but before the new governor had taken over, the Federal Government brought Asiwaju Bola Tinubu before the Code of Conduct Tribunal for trial over alleged illegal operation of 16 separate foreign accounts. In January 2009 the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission cleared Bola Tinubu and governors James Ibori of Delta State and Obong Victor Attah of Akwa Ibom State of charges of conspiracy, money laundering, abuse of office and official corruption in relation to a sale of V-mobile network shares in 2004. In September 2009 however there were reports that the British Metropolitan Police were investigating a transaction in which the Lagos State government made an investment in Econet (now Airtel). Bola Tinubu said the transaction was straightforward and profitable to the state, with no intermediaries involved. The Federal Government rejected a request by Britain to release evidence needed for further investigation and prosecution of the three Nigerian ex-governors in a London court. In March 2009 there were reports that a plot had been identified to kill Asiwaju Bola Tinubu. The Alliance for Democracy called on Inspector General Police, Mike Okiro to conduct a thorough investigation. Following the victory by the People's Democratic Party (PDP) in the April 2007 elections, Bola Tinubu was active in negotiations to bring together the fragmented opposition parties into a "mega-party" capable of challenging the PDP in 2011. In July 2009, he called for implementation of electoral reforms spelled out in the Uwais report to ensure that the 2011 elections would be as free and fair as the elections of 1993 had been. In December 2009 there were reports that Babatunde Fashola and Bola Tinubu had fallen out over the issue of whether Fashola should run for reelection in 2011, with Tinubu said to be supporting the Commissioner for Environment, Muiz Banire. Fashola later relented and threw his full weight behind Akinwunmi Ambode, the current gubernatorial candidate for APC. ABOUT OLUSEGUN OBASANJO Olusegun Obasanjo served as President of Nigeria from May 1999 to May 2007. It was the culmination of a life spent on the front line of African politics. In 2008 he was appointed by the United Nations as a special envoy for Africa and has since overseen democratic elections on behalf of the African Union and Ecowas in countries across the continent. He has since emerged as an advocate for investment into the country and with the launch of his Foundation will tackle issues critical to advance across the Continent. Obasanjo became President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in 1999, following the demise of the military dictatorship of General Sani Abacha. After fifteen years of repressive rule that saw Nigeria slip into pariah status internationally, Obasanjo quickly emerged as the front-runner to lead the country’s historic transition back to democracy. He had suffered firsthand the brutality of the Abacha regime, having been imprisoned in 1995 on fabricated charges of plotting a coup to depose him. Leadership was first thrust upon him in 13th February 1976 when he narrowly escaped an assassination attempt that killed Nigeria’s military ruler, Murtala Mohammed. As deputy he took over as head of state and vowed to restore civilian rule once the conditions for democracy were established. True to his word he gave way to Shehu Shagari , the winner of elections held in 1979, to date the only voluntary handover from military to civilian rule in Nigerian history. Obasanjo’s elected term in office was characterized by a commitment to the rule of law, economic and political reform. He worked to rebuild institutions wrecked by decades of neglect, repression and mismanagement. This included the appointment of key, reform minded technocrats such as the finance minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and education minister Obiageli Ezekwesili – both internationally respected leaders in their fields. Selecting Charles Soludo as Governor of the Central Bank paved the way for consolidation in the country’s banking sector, transforming it into one of the most dynamic industries on the continent. Liberalisation of the telecommunications sector has allowed Nigeria to become Africa’s largest and fastest growing markets for ICTs. He created the country’s first Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, which secured in excess of 275 convictions, including high profile members of Nigeria’s elite, recovering a total of $5bn in assets. This was the first time in the country’s history that public officials were prosecuted for the misuse of state funds. With high oil prices, Obasanjo’s government oversaw a doubling of Nigeria’s average economic growth rate to 6 per cent.Foreign reserves rose from $3.7 billion in 1999 to $45 billion in 2007. Sound economic stewardship helped Obasanjo secure $18 billion in debt relief from Western creditors and his government used burgeoning state revenues to pay down a further $12 billion in dues leaving Nigeria almost debt free. He is also a role model for the youth of Africa. He established the African Leadership Forum, which organises workshops advocating African solutions to African problems through better leadership, state capacity building and the encouragement of private enterprise. The Presidential Library complex he is building in his home town of Abeokuta will be the first of its kind in Africa – an enduring testament to his leadership, and a model for the rest of the continent. Outside of Nigeria he has been central in the regeneration and repositioning of the African Union. Together with former South African president Thabo Mbeki he lead the creation of the African Peer Review Mechanism designed to engender and promote the ideals of democracy and good governance, and the New Partnership for Africa’s Development. After serving his country for eight years and restoring the respect of its continental peers and the international community, Obasanjo stepped down in 2007. His role as Africa’s ambassador-at-large has continued.. In 2008 he was appointed special Envoy on the Great Lakes region by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, and continues to be an integral actor in mediation efforts in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. Obasanjo has also served as the African Union’s Special Envoy for Togo’s 2010 Presidential elections, as well as South Africa’s presidential polls in 2009. As the Special Envoy for ECOWAS, his role in diffusing the crisis that threatened civil war in Cote D’Ivoire 2011 was vital. When democracy was once again threatened in Senegal during controversial presidential polls in March 2012, he promptly led the joint African Union and Ecowas mission to resolve the standoff, paving the way for a smooth transition and pulling one of Africa’s oldest democracies back from the brink. Outside the political arena Obasanjo has been a catalyst in driving Africa’s economic transformation. The region is now amongst the fastest growing in the world, rapidly becoming the destination of choice for international investors looking to emerging and frontier markets. Using his experience as a successful farmer and businessman in Nigeria he is actively engaging this community to facilitate more investment into the continent. Obasanjo will achieve this vision through the Africa Investment Council (AIC) a platform of distinguished leaders working to provide advocacy, thought-leadership, collaboration and best-practices on sustainable investment into Africa. He is presently an advisor to New World Capital; an investment advisory firm providing interested parties with market access, investment advisory and co-investment opportunities across the continent. President Obasanjo is also Founder of the Olusegun Obasanjo Foundation, a UK based charity that has a mission of advancing Human Security for All. The Foundation has wide ranging initiatives of Feeding Africa, Youth Empowerment, Education for Girls and a health initiative focused on non-communicable and water borne diseases. As Africa assumes an increasingly central role in international policy and business the continent will continue to have an unwavering advocate in Obasanjo. We are promoting reading through RAN —SYNW president April 7, 2016 Wole Adedoyin, the president of the Society of Young Nigerian Writers (SYNW), in this interview with ADEWALE OSHODI, speaks on the organisation’s Read Across Nigeria (RAN) project, while explaining the challenges he is facing in his efforts towards promoting the reading culture in the country. EXCERPTS: W HAT is Read Across Nigeria (RAN) all about? Read Across Nigeria (RAN) is an annual chain of events administered by the Society of Young Nigerian Writers (SYNW). We usually have a day devoted for readers and lovers of books across Nigeria to read any selected book. It is also an avenue for promoting the reading culture in the country. Read Across Nigeria is held in schools, offices, markets, etc. Organisers can coordinate reading seminars, workshops, fora, symposia and conferences to celebrate the day. We welcome events of any size and extend invitation to many societies and associations involved in book reading, as long as they agree to follow our guidelines with serious sense of purpose. The main mission of this project, therefore, is to promote book reading through events like spelling bee, quiz contests and other mediums across the country. We welcome any individual, association, society or institution that is interested in the literary sector, and who wishes to join the cause and agree to follow our guidelines. Our goal is to promote the book culture through reading activities and exercises. Coordination of this programme is open to both men and women to organise but one is free to design his event, as long as it reflects the common goal. This year’s edition will be in honour and commemoration of Dr. Wale Okediran’s 61st birthday, which is coming up on April 14, 2016. Dr. Wale Okediran is a former president of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) and the Founder/Director of Ebedi International Writers Residency, Iseyin. Who is the brain behind this project? Read Across Nigeria is an initiative of the Society of Young Nigerian Writers, and it is aimed at promoting the reading culture in the country through the works of Nigerian authors. Read Across Nigeria is such a huge project, but what challenges have you been facing since you started? There are lots of problems that we are encountering during the execution of the project. Problems like finance, mobilisation and discouragement from schools we’ve selected for the project. For example, in some schools in Oyo State, some do not have literary texts. They don’t have enough literary and educational books in their libraries. We all know that public school students don’t buy books. We had to provide some for them. Apart from this, the majority of the students don’t read. You can imagine secondary school Literature students who did not know that Things Fall Apart was written by Chinua Achebe. Not only that, the majority of them do not know authors like Amos Tutuola, T.M Aluko, Cyprian Ekwensi, Elechi Amadi, Mabel Segun etc. Some students don’t even know that Chief Obafemi Awolowo was a great writer until I mentioned three of his books to them. So these are some of the challenges we are facing. How have you been coping with all these challenges? Dr. Okediran, as we all know, is a great literary figure in the country, who always supports every literary initiative that comes his way. He has been of tremendous help to this initiative. He is, indeed, a literary giant. Through him, we have been able to spread our tentacles across all the states of the federation. His personality really works for us. We have also made literature simple to secondary school students by coming up with graphical posters showing world authors and their books, as well as titles of best seller books. Students of schools we have been to can now identify our great literary giants and their works through the posters. Media houses, particularly the Nigerian Tribune, have also been of tremendous help to us in terms of publicity. For many years, they have been our backbone and have encouraged us in promoting reading and writing culture in Oyo State and Nigeria as a country. I also want to encourage the Federal Ministry of Education to make the works of famous people like Chief Awolowo available to schools. Now, how far have you gone with the project? Presently, we have covered almost 20 states of the federation, where friends, colleagues and associates of Dr Okediran reside. For example, in Oyo State, five groups are organising reading events in his honour, excluding the 31 secondary schools that are now holding their reading sessions in their different schools. We have them in Iseyin, Ogbomoso and Ibadan. So far, we have gotten various interest of participation from states like Oyo, Osun, Ogun, Anambra, Sokoto, Jos, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Niger, Kwara, Kano, Kaduna, Ebonyi, Borno, Bayelsa, Delta, to mention but a few. Like I said earlier, the personality of Dr. Okediran has been of tremendous help to this project. Friends of Dr. Okediran like Chineye Obi Obasi, Denja Abdulahi (present National President of the Association of Nigerian Authors), Dr. Tope Olaifa, Mr. Kofi Sackey, Prof. Abebe Kabir, Dr. Ngozi Chuma Udeh, among others, have really tried for the project. THE 2016 READ ACROSS NIGERIA PROJECT; A GOODWILL MESSAGE BY DR WALE OKEDIRAN (2016 Honouree) As a newly elected Member of the House of Representatives, Abuja in 2004, all that was on my mind was how to effectively perform my duties as a Federal Legislator. Having previously served the Association Of Nigerian Authors (ANA) in various positions such as the Oyo State Chairman, National Treasurer and National General Secretary, I thought that I was done with ANA politics. However, some ANA Members led by two young friends of mine, Baba Dzukogi and Denja Abdullahi would have none of it. And despite all my pleas to be left alone, the duo, with their colleagues finally succeeded in drafting me into the ANA Presidency between 2005 and 2008. To the glory of God and with the good support of my Executive, I gave a good account of myself. Again, late last year, when another ANA member from Oyo State, Wole Adedoyin came up with the idea of an annual Read Across Nigeria Campaign Project with the maiden edition to be held in my honour, I did all I could to discourage the young man. This was because since I completed my tenure as the ANA President in 2008, I have been working from the background to support the Association and did not want any more publicity. At a point, I stopped answering Wole’s phone calls and replying his emails just to discourage him. However, he persisted and today his dream of a National Reading project has come to stay. It is always a great honour to be found worthy by your peers for a position of leadership or recognition and for this I am very grateful not only to Wole Adedoyin and his team, but to all those who over the years have pulled me up and aided me to give of the best of my talent and creativity. I am aware that the ANA already has an annual National Literary Awareness Campaign which has been ably supported for the last few years by my good friend, Mallam Yusuff Ali (SAN). Therefore, I expect the Read Across Nigeria (RAN) Project to be a worthy addition to this important activity. I have also been informed that the RAN Project will be an annual event which will be used to honour different authors on a yearly basis. As the RAN’s maiden honouree, I promise to always be available to support the project so that the pervasive problem of the Poor Reading Culture in the country will be addressed not only on an annual basis, but on a continuous daily basis. As parents and guardians, the primary responsibility to imbibe into our children and wards the culture for reading lies with us and not with their teachers. Teachers are only there to augment our initial efforts, therefore, let us all resolve in ourselves to read to our children and wards on a daily basis. Through this, we shall inculcate in them the very important reading culture. In addition, I call on all arms of government to do all they can to encourage the Reading Culture in the country. Apart from providing Libraries at the Local to State and National levels, government must put into place, policies which will make book available and affordable to parents and guardians. Prohibitive import levies on books, newsprint as well as other publishing materials should be avoided. In addition, we eagerly look forward to the promulgation of policies such as the proposed Endowment for the Arts among other pro active creative policies which will support the work of creativity in the country. Finally, I wish to call on my fellow writers to be steadfast and committed in their onerous but noble work of creativity. In view of the prevailing challenging socio economic situation in the country, it is very easy to give up on writing. However, it has been proven over and over again that some of the best works of creativity are produced during austere periods. As legatees of an old and noble profession, my colleagues should be aware of that famous saying that ‘the art is long’. Therefore, let us not allow any hindrances whether physical or mental to debar us from our self chosen profession. Even though we cannot stop writers from letting out their pent up anger and criticism at official corruption and poor governance, we can only hope that they too will offer cogent solutions and be good examples of what they criticise in others. As the purveyors of the attributes of an ideal society, we must not allow the sentiments of religion, ethnicity and gender to steal from us the joy of social justice and humanity. Although, I cannot be physically present at every location of the event since all the activities are taking place on the same day, I am with you in sprit. On behalf of my friends and family, I wish to thank the organisers of the Read Across Nigeria project for the honour done me. Thank you and God bless. |

1. Your name and any possible nickname. Olawale (Wale) Okediran; OKD/ Okedi/Amazda 2. The Society For Young Writers is holding a national reading day in your honour, how does that make you feel. Embarrassed, humbled and grateful to God 3. You are a medical doctor who veered into writing and politics, how did that come about? I have always loved books. As a child, my most precious moments were spent in the school library. It was therefore not surprising when all the distinctions I had in my O levels were in the Arts while I only had credits in my Science subjects. All my efforts to convince my father to allow me study Mass Communications were rebuffed and I ended up studying Medicine which my father preferred. Along the line, I got drafted into politics by the late Federal Attorney General, Chief Bola Ige who was my mentor. I later represented my constituency in Oyo State at the House of Representatives in Abuja between 2014 and 2017. Although I greatly enjoy practicing as a doctor, I have been able over the years to successfully combine politics with my writing and medical professions. 4. Who were your greatest influencers as a writer? Apart from famous African Authors such as Chinua Achebe, Wole Soyinka, Cyprian Ekwensi, Camera Laye and others, I grew up enjoying Chinese and Russian Literature. I was therefore in addition greatly influenced by Russian authors such as Anton Chekov, Leo Tolstoy, Dostoestovisky, Pasternack among others. 5. From the records, you have written many books and won awards while being long listed and shortlisted for some; The Boys At The Border, Shortlist for the 1992 Commonwealth Literature Prize, The Rescue of Uncle Babs, winner of the 1999 ANA/Matatu Prize for Children’s Literature, Dreams Die At Twilight, Longlist for the 2004 NLNG Literature Prize and 2004 adjudged as one of the 25 best published books in Nigeria by Specrum in the last 25 years, Strange Encounters, Winner of the 2005 ANA Prize for fiction, The Weaving Looms Shortlisted for the 2008 Wole Soyinka Prize For African Literature, Tenants Of The House, Co-Winner of the 2010 Wole Soyinka Prize for African Literature. What does being listed or given awards do for a writer? In a positive way, Literary awards and recognitions can help promote a writer’s work and give him/her more confidence to continue in his/her writing career. On the other hand, if not well handled, the awards and the usual public adulation that goes with it can give a writer a false sense of superiority over his peers. This could then make a writer arrogant and repulsive of good advice about his craft leading to a gradual deterioration in the quality his/her works. 6. Should a writer then write for awards? No. A writer should only aim at writing a very good book. If the awards now come, all well and good but a writer’s primary aim should not be to win awards but to write very well. This is because as good as they may be, literary awards are very subjective and do not always reflect the best writer. The best indicator of a good book is the reader. Once a writer can garner for him/her self a critical mass of readers, then that writer should feel fulfilled and happy. Literary awards if and when they come are just the cream on top of a cake and not the actual cake! 7. You set up Ebedi of which I was a beneficiary. Why did you set it and how is it being funded? The Ebedi Residency came to be when I realized that many writers including myself were always behind in their writing schedules because of the lack of space and time to complete their manuscripts. I have spent money and still do booking into hotels and guest houses just to complete my manuscripts. When I later discussed the issue with my wife, she advised that we convert part of my country home in my hometown, Iseyin in Oyo State into a Writers Residency. Thankfully, with the kind support of the Ebedi Board of Directors, the Residency has exceeded my expectations having hosted over 60 writers from six different countries including Nigeria since its inception in 2010. Since its inception, the Residency has been solely funded by me but efforts are being made to attract local and international financial support. 8. Everyone knows you as someone who is interested in the growth of writers. Why is this so? I have always been interested in the intellectual pursuits writing inclusive. This was why I have assisted many indigenous students with bursaries and scholarships. I have also supplied many Libraries with books all in an attempt to promote the Reading Culture in the country. I guess that my parents who introduced me to reading and writing and were excellent promoters of education must have influenced me in this direction. 9. As President of Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), what do you consider your biggest achievement during that period? I will consider the ability of my executive to execute many Literary projects such as Seminars, Workshops as well as mark historic literary landmarks such as the 25th anniversary of Soyinka’s Nobel Prize and 50 years of the publication of Achebe’s ‘Things Fall Apart’ as one of my biggest achievements. In addition, we were able to establish and empower more ANA state chapters in the country. Since we believed that ANA’s strength lies in the virility of its state chapters, everything was done to make the state chapters active by encouraging them to have regular monthly literary activities with which to encourage and stimulate their members literary abilities. 10. Association of Nigerian Authors is not as formidable as some people want it. What do you think are the factors militating against the Association? Funding is a major problem. There is no way one can run a large association such as ANA without adequate and regular funds. As a former ANA’s National Treasurer, General Secretary and lastly, National President, I am very familiar with this problem. Several times, we had to go cap in hand to prospective financiers only to be humiliated or disappointed. In addition, many writers do not have the financial means to support the association while funding of literary activities by the government has not been very encouraging. This usually leads the association to rely on the personal efforts of ANA’s officials to run the association. The other factor is the occasional bickering among writers over political positions and money especially at the level of the state chapters. Even though the National Executive has always successfully intervened, the time and energy put into this can sometimes drain the association’s limited resources. 11. You used to be in the House of Representatives. How well do you think law makers in general are tackling their assignments? My experience as a Federal Lawmaker was fictionalized in my award winning book, ‘Tenants Of The House’. From my experience, the Lawmakers are doing their best in the circumstances through which they came into office and the general socio economic situation in the country. Unfortunately because of pressure from their constituents as well as the inherent desire of an average politician to continue to stay in power, corruption and avarice continue to slow down the work of the Lawmakers. My position is that it is always difficult for democracy to adequately thrive in a society with an endemic level of poverty. Therefore, if we want the best from our elected political officers, we need to adequately alleviate poverty among our people and therefore free both the electorate and the elected from the burden of ‘scavenging’ for economic survival. 12. A lot of young people are in a hurry to write and be read. What advice do you have for them? This a major deterrent in the production of quality literary works by our authors. In the advanced countries with a virile and well organized literary culture, there are various literary workshops and writing schools that can help burnish writers skills and assist them in the production of quality manuscripts. In addition, in these parts, established publishers have professional editors who will closely scrutinize the works of their prospective authors and before getting them published. Unfortunately here in Nigeria, due to the poor standard of education, some of our University graduates cannot adequately express themselves in English as such, what thy write are hardly publishable. In addition, there is a dearth of adequate publishing outlets for even the well written works leading many writers to go for self publishing. Even though self publishing in itself is not a bad idea, the hurry and haste in which this is carried out does not allow for any meaningful input by experienced editors and proof readers resulting in badly produced books. 13. We read some time ago that Tenants in the House was going to be turned into a movie. How far with the project? We are in the final stages of accessing funds from our financiers. Every other thing such as casting, location identity as well as screen writing and editing are ready. We have been very fortunate in signing up some of the best actors and actresses in the country. Hopefully, in the next few months, shooting will commence. By God’s grace, we are looking forwards to a great film. 14. Who is Dr. Wale Okediran and what does he want to be remembered for after now? I will consider myself a simple and easy going introspective middle aged man (my friends jokingly call me a ‘fairly used middle aged man’ because of my boyish looks that belie my 61 years) who is eager to see Nigeria of his dream become a reality in his life time. I am talking of a Nigeria where issues of ethnicity, religion and gender will not be allowed to stop us from becoming a great nation which we should have been many years ago. This is where I stand and would love to be remembered for.
