It was established in 2014 as an independent writer’s body for Nigerian authors. It is a membership based arts organization. Much of what we do benefits all writers whether they are members of the society or not. Our workshops, conferences and advocacy activities are of benefits to the entire literary community.
The membership structures includes full membership for established published writers, associate membership for unpublished writers, student members who pay a reduced fee if currently student (Student ID required) and affiliate (corporate membership for companies (corporate membership for sister organization).

ICT opportunities in Nigerian oil and gas industry

IT is no more a news that ICT practitioners in the country have a big stake in the oil and gas industry.

The domination of some international workers being employed to carry out projects in various onshore and offshore locations in the country instead of the indigenous workforce gave birth to the Nigerian Content Act 2010.

The prevalence of these expatriate workers has resulted in rareness of jobs, skills development, capacity building, and utilisation of the local workforce and, in the long run, a lack of sustained national economic development. In detection of this wrought the Federal Government of recent made efforts to control some portion of economic derivatives from the oil and gas industry by encouraging the development and deliberate application of local human and material resources in the Nigerian oil and gas sector. This led to the enactment of the Nigerian Content Act 2010.

The Nigeria Oil and Gas Industry Content Development Act bill was passed by the House of Representatives on March 3, 2010, also passed by the Senate on March 10, 2010 and finally signed into law by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on the 29th of March 2010.

The Act, in recognising the importance of ICT to the oil and gas sector, specifically in section 58(f) of the Act, directed the Nigerian Content Development Monitoring Board to set up Nigerian Content Consultative Forum (NCCF) in ICT. The NCCF in ICT is required to consist of stakeholders and regulatory agencies in ICT industry.

The Nigeria Oil and Gas Industry Content Development Act, according to section 12, precisely reads that Nigerians are to be given first consideration for the provisions of goods and services in the sector.

Also in the Schedule to the Act, Nigerian are permitted to perform certain percentage in the provision of goods and services in the oil and gas sector.

The focal areas of the NCCF-ICT includes: IT/ICT human capacity building/continuous manpower development; promotion of the acceptance and use of locally developed hardware and software in the oil and gas industry; terms/requirements for accessing ICT related contracts in the industry; research and development on the ICT goods and services needed in the industry and positioning local players to provide the identified needs, which will result in carrying out survey to establish a comprehensive database of existing local ICT capabilities and training needed to enhance those capabilities.

The Nigeria Oil and Gas Industry Content Development Act outlined the following ICT services and their content (NC) level required in the sector. They are: network installation/support services, 85 per cent; network installation/support services, 45 per cent; software development and support services, 51 per cent; computer-based modeling services, 51 per cent; computer-based simulation/training programs services, 51 per cent; CAL/CAP services, 51 per cent; hardware installation support services, 50 per cent; operating system installation/ support services, 50 per cent; user support/help desk services, 60 per cent; library services, 70 per cent; IT management consultancy services. 50per cent; data management services, 60 per cent; telecommunication installation/support services, 60 per cent; data and message transmitting services, 60 per cent; rental of communication lines, 75 per cent; telecommunication subscription services, 85 per cent; public address system services, 95 per cent and other information system (IS)/Information Technology (IT) services, 75 per cent.

Formation of ict local content association

Sequel to an NCCF-ICT meeting which came up in Yenagoa in November 2013, it was learnt that few people in ICT field were aware of the Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry Content Development Act and only few of these members had the knowledge of the huge financial and investment opportunities that was created by the Act for Nigerians with skills in Information Technology and Communication Technology (ICT). This development prompted the Computer Professionals Registration Council of Nigeria (CPN) in collaboration with National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) to organise meetings of stakeholders in the ICT industry to inform them of the provisions of the NOGICD Act and to sensitise them of the arrays of opportunities for them in the oil and gas industry. At the stakeholder’s meeting, it was agreed that there was need for consistent sensitisation for other ICT practitioners to enable them benefit from the opportunities in the industry. They also agreed to come under a forum by establishing an association that would promote their interest in the industry like the Oil and Gas Trainers Association of Nigeria (PETAN) Manufacturers Association of Nigerian Local Content Group (MAN LOC) etc. This led to the creation of Information Communication Technology Local Content Association, an association which would represent the interest of ICT practitioners in the industry.

The registration of the association with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) is now at an advanced stage. The stakeholder’s association already has a secretariat, a Local Content Desk, a live website www.nccf.cpn.ng and has commenced plans for sensitisation campaign to people involved in all areas of ICT products and services required in the oil and gas sector as enumerated in the schedule of the NOGICD Act.

Upon its completion of registration with CAC, the association would work closely with NCDMB to promote the interest of ICT practioners in thier provision of products and services in the oil and gas industry.

Focused areas of Information Communication Technology Local Content Association are as follows: sensitising IT practitioners of the opportunities in the sector; registration of all IT practitioners capable of providing services in the sector on the Joint Qualification System (JQS) which is the databank of available capabilities in the industry; negotiating terms for accessing IT Contracts in the sector; compilation of a directory of persons with capability to provide services in the sector; creating platform for information gathering and sharing among IT practitioners; promoting usage of locally developed software and hardware in the sector; coordinate ICT capacity building programmes in the sector.

To be candid this initiative is not known to many ICT practitioners in the country. There are so many ICT groups who are not members of ITAN, NCS and CPN and do not know about this new initiative. Formal and informal groups should be carried along. Media and online publicity should also be put into consideration. CPN and NCS cannot do these things alone. Local chapters of NCS, ITAN and some other big ICT professional bodies do not have a simple blog to disseminate information to the grassroots people. Information Communication Technology Local Content Association should not be only for big ICT firms in the country. Grassroots and local ICT practitioners should also be part of the stakeholders. CAC must carry street sides computer operators, engineers, animators, web designers, graphic operators, hardware engineers, programmers, database administrators etc, along.

TWENTY SECONDARY SCHOOLS SET TO BATTLE FOR FAGUNWA LITERATURE PRIZE

Twenty secondary schools both public and private schools are ready to battle for this year Yoruba Literature award recently named in honour of the Late D.O. Fagunwa, a foremost Yoruba Writer and reknowned author of Aditu Olodumare, Igbo Olodumare, Ireke Onibudo, Irinkerindo Ninu Igbo Elegbeje and Ogboju Ode Ninu Igbo Irunmale.

FOURTH EDITION OF FAGUNWA DAY SET TO HOLD ON 21ST OF MARCH 2015

Fagunwa Day is the brainchild of the Society of Young Nigerian Writers. Now in its fourth edition. This year’s edition will be done through a new outfit (Fagunwa Literary Society) of the Society of Young Nigerian Writers solely dedicated and committed to Fagunwa’s School of Thoughts.

2015 edition of the programme promises to be an avenue for showcasing works of the late sage (D.O. Fagunwa) and Yoruba Language and Literature.

Prominent and Important personalities in Yoruba Literature and Language are expected to grace the occasion. The programme comes up on the 21st of March 2015 at the Art Theatre of the University of Ibadan at exactly 11:00am.

Twenty invited secondary schools are ready to participate in this 2015 edition. Fagunwa Day is a literary day set aside in honour of D.O. Fagunwa. And to test the abilities of secondary school students in the area of Yoruba Literature and Language. Other aims are to encourage writing and reading in Yoruba Language among some selected schools and to give out awards, recognition and reward outstanding young writers of Yoruba expression and promotion of reading culture.

SYNW SET TO INAUGURATE ABUBAKAR IMAM LITERARY SOCIETY

The Society of Young Nigerian Writers will on the 21st of March, 2015 inaugurates a new literary Society called Abubakar Imam Literary Society which is aim at promoting Hausa Language and Literature in the Northern region of the country.

Abubakar Imam Literary Society is an initiative of the Society of Young Nigerian Writers aim at promoting Hausa Language and Literature through the Literary works of the Late Abubakar Imam, a foremost and renowned Hausa Writer.

In order to achieve its major aim of promoting indigenous languages and Literature in Nigeria, the Society of Young Nigerian Writers is set to inaugurate PITA NWANNA Literary Society. Pita Nwanna Literary Society is an initiative of the Society of Young Nigerian Writers aim at promoting Igbo Language and Literature through the literary works of the Late Pita Nwanna, a foremost and renowned Igbo Writer.

The inauguration is scheduled to take place on the 21st of March 2015 by 11:00PM at the art theatre hall of Alvan Ikoku College of Education, Owerri, Imo State.

Let us all shun tribalism, radical thuggery, and discrimination of any candidates. As for the presidency, vote for any candidate who is literarily inclined and ready to support creative writing in the country.

LATE PA SAMUEL ADIGUN OLADIMEJI ABIOLA – an economist, political scientist, scholar, philosopher and business entrepreneur. He was a native of Oyo and an erudite scholar during his lifetime. In a bid to immortalize and remember his past works and achievements, SAMUEL ADIGUN AND JOAN ABIMBOLA ABIOLA FOUNDATION was established.
JOAN ABIMBOLA ABIOLA – a Teacher, Bible Scholar and an evangelist. She was a graduate of International Relations from the prestigious university of Ife. Before her death, she was the headmistress of a prestigious nursery and primary school in Osogbo City, Osun State.
THEME OF THE WRITING CONTEST – BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL

Conditions of entry
• The Award is open to Nigerian Citizens normally resident in Nigeria under the age of 35.
• Entries must be the original and published work of the author.
• Participation is free
• Individual writer must attach a copy of their CV.
• Only one entry per person.
• Entries close on 30th of May, 2015. Late entries will not be accepted.
• Each entry must be submitted as a hard copy. The entrant’s information must be attached on a separate page.
• 5 copies of the submitted book(s) must be included
• Entries will not be returned, so remember to keep a copy.
• An entry will be disqualified if it is handwritten or in manuscript formats (entries must be printed copies).
• Entries are read and judged by a panel selected by judges. If, in the opinion of the judges, no entry meets the standard expected, no award will be made. The judge’s decision is final. The organizers reserve the right to withdraw any unsuitable entry.
• Copyright of submitted work will remain with the author. The names of winning entrants and copies of their winning entries may be published on the Society’s website.
• All finalists will be notified by June. 1st, 2015

IJESHA FAMILY TREES/DIRECTORY
This is an initiative geared towards collating and publishing of names of Prominent and indigenes of Ilesa son and daughters and their family roots. We hope to work with prominent stakeholders in order to achieve this aim and objective. This project will allow Ilesha sons and daughters to know their family histories, how their names got into being and how they got to where they are now.
 
IJESHA BOOK OF THE MONTH
This is an initiative of the Ilesha Book Club and Ilesa Writers and Artists Forum towards promoting good authors and good books in Ilesha and its environs. Interested authors can submit their favourite books or the organizer of this initiate can seek for the book of the month themselves. We accept text books on all subjects, literary books like poetry, prose and drama. A selected book of the month would be given a letter and a certificate of Achievement.

This is a publication displaying the biography of prominent people from Ilesaland. It will cross across all endeavors of life. It will not only feature only Ijesa sons and daughter at home but also in abroad.

This is another way of recognizing those IJESHA sons and daughter who have contributed immensely to the national development of the country.
 
ILESA LITERARY AND TECHNOLOGICAL YOUTH EMPOWERMENT INITIATIVE
This initiative blends both literary arts and science and technology together. We hope to build, develop and hone the literary and technological skills and techniques of Ijesa youth for national development. We shall be organizing thought-provoking workshops and conferences aim at catching them young.

IBADAN BOOK CLUB SET TO LAUNCH “CONSTANTINE’S CONFESSION”

In a press statement recently released by Mr. Giwa Olayiwola the National Coordinator of Ibadan Book Club, disclosed that its proposed book launch will take place on the 22nd of November 2014 at the Alliance Francaise Hall, Seventh Day Adventist, Iyaganku, Ibadan by 12:00 noon.
The Special Guest of honour is Mr. Akin Bello, the two terms Chairman of the Association of Nigerian Authors, Oyo State Chapter and the 2014 Winner of the Wole Soyinka Prize for Literature. The Book, “Constantine’s Confession” Written by Dare Akinola focuses on the situation in most of African Countries. The proposed Book launch will also feature arts exhibition, short performance, lecture and readings by upcoming and established writers.

The Society of Young Nigerian Writers is now calling for submissions from young Nigerian poets residing in Nigeria and outside for its Songs of Unity : An Anthology of Poems to Mark Nigeria @ 54 Independence which will also be dedicated to the Late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Alh. Tafawa Balewa and Alh. (Chief) Ahmadu Bello.
SYNW Members and intending members are to compose poems of 40 lines to 60 lines on any topical issues ranging from politics, religion, corruption, terrorism, bad economy, bad governance, stealing, kidnapping, raping etc.
The scope of this project is to sample the opinions of Young Nigerian Poets residing within and outside Nigeria on the level of progress and failures recorded by our leaders after fifty three years of independent.

• Language Medium – English, Hausa and Igbo

• Participants should be between the ages of 10 and 35

Young female writers form new association
September 16, 2014

A new association called The Nigerian Women Writers’ Forum (NIWOWF) has been formed.
Initiated by the Society of Young Nigerian Writers (SYNW), the body’s aim is to be “a uniquely ingenious, exploratory and educative platform geared toward inspiring young female writers from all parts of Nigeria in fanning their writing talent, and providing opportunities for exhibiting their works.”
A statement from the National Secretary of NIWOWF, Amarachi Udechukwu further explained that, “This forum is designed to bring young female writers from age 10 to 40 together under a structure of mentoring and support. It is an avenue to encourage an interpersonal educative atmosphere and outstanding creativity in their writing skills and techniques.”
She explained that the association will achieve its aims by organising workshops, symposia, and conferences for both upcoming and aspiring female writers.
NIWOWF, she added, will also institute the Nigerian Women Writers Merit Awards and annual Nigerian Women Writers conventions.
Udechukwu said the group plans to honour Ify Omalicha, Buchi Emecheta, Flora Nwapa, Mabel Segun, Zulu Shofola, Balaraba Ramat, and Professor Biola Odejide for their individual contributions to women development and creative writing in Nigeria.
She also disclosed that a five-person council has been appointed to run the affairs of the association. They are .Shola Phebian Oguntoyinbo (National Coordinator), Amarachi Udechukwu( National Secretary), Rita Okonoboh(National PRO), Hajara Hussaini Ashara(National Financial Secretary) and Ajayi Zenami Temilade (National Treasurer)
There is also the NIWOWF National Teen Writers’ council comprising Adeniyi Adeyinka Florence(Nat. Coordinator), Oyebade Monsurat( Secretary), Raji Rashidat (PRO) and Adedoyin Monsurat (Treasurer).
