Some plant and animal pests, and some bacteria, survive chemicals and antibiotics that are used to kill them.

For example, when penicillin came into wide use during the Second World War, it got a reputation for being a powerful medicine that killed bacteria or prevented their growth.

But within four years of drug companies mass-producing penicillin, some microbes were identified as being resistant to it.

New challenges

So other antibacterial agents had to be developed. A few decades later, bacteria had been found that could resist all the antibiotic drugs available.

Isn't this evolution on a tiny time-scale? Many evolutionists think it is. We think it isn't.

As a general rule, the only bacteria or pests that survive are those that are already resistant to the chemicals. The resistance or immunity doesn't evolve over time — it is already present.

The resistant strains then produce offspring with the same genetic resistance until the only ones living are those that have resistance. The pests with no genetic resistance will have died.

Some germs may become resistant through mutation, but they remain germs and never evolve into higher life-forms. No evolution required

In each case no evolution is involved. This is because most do die (no evolution there!) and the survivors had resistance to the toxin in the first place (no evolution there either!). The pests cannot develop resistance if they are dead. And if they don't die they obviously have the resistance already — it didn't evolve.

This is why new chemicals and new anti-bacterial substances constantly have to be developed, and why supergerms are breeding in our hospitals. The resistant ones are the only ones left to breed, so before long all the living pests are resistant.

If evolution were the factor that caused immunity there would have to be an increase in genetic information. But the genes do not evolve new information.

No evolution is involved in this survival process, because the pests are either resistant or not. Those that are resistant will have offspring that will also be resistant, and a new chemical will have to be found to get rid of them.

One of the most baffling mysteries of the insect world has been what makes a firefly glow in the dark.

Fireflies, also called lightning bugs, are luminous nocturnal beetles made up of about 1900 species living in tropical and temperate areas. The common glowworm is a member of the same beetle family (Lampyridae).

Fireflies range in size from a few millimetres up to about an inch (25 millimetres), and have special light organs under their abdomen. Females that lack wings are commonly referred to as glowworms.

There are a few peculiarities about fireflies, one of which is that some adult fireflies do not eat. Another is that frogs that eat large numbers of fireflies start to glow themselves.

Another mystery came to light in July 2008 when a researcher from the University of Queensland, David Merritt, found that Tasmanian cave glow-worms deep inside dark caves are able to tell whether it is day or night outside. Despite their continuously dark environment, they light up brightly during the day and switch off at night.

But the biggest mystery has been what causes them to glow.

Secret revealed at last

Neurobiologist Dr. Barry A. Trimmer was the lead author of a paper in the journal Science in which he finally revealed the secret of what makes a firefly glow.

The secret is nitric oxide. This is a dissolved gas that lets the firefly's nervous system switch on its flash of light. Most firelies produce short, rhythmic flashes.

In a complex arrangement between nerve cells, light-producing cells, and an enzyme-assisted reaction, the lightning bug's lantern emits that greenish glow so common in the early summer twilight in some parts of the world.

We must add of course, that even though scientists now know what makes the firefly glow, the whole complex arrangement shouts that only the Master Creator could create and put together such an amazing little insect in the first place.

Did the first man and woman on earth, Adam and Eve, have belly-buttons?

Without wasting time, the answer is simple: No, Adam and Eve did not have belly buttons. Here is why:

Your belly-button, or navel (or tummy button as some people call it), is evidence that you had a mother.

When you were a tiny, not-yet-born, baby growing inside your mother's tummy, you were attached to her by your umbilical cord. The umbilical cord is an amazing tube that allows you to get nourishment from your mother and to get rid of waste as you grow.

When you were born, the umbilical cord was removed so you could function on your own. When this happened, it left a sort of scar, which is known as the navel, or belly button.

Adam and Eve had no mother
Adam and Eve, as the first man and woman, had no mother. The Book of Genesis in the Bible tells us that God created Adam from the dust of the ground and breathed life into him. He made Eve from one of Adam's ribs, or at least from part of Adam's side.

So neither Adam nor Eve had a mother. Therefore they could not have had the scar on their bellies showing they were born from a mother.

Gosse's view
In 1857, two years before the release of Charles Darwin's waffly but influential book, On the Origin of Species, British naturalist Philip Henry Gosse (pictured at left) released a book that touched on this belly-button question from another angle.

Gosse's book was called Omphalos.

In his book, Gosse argued that when God created the world, He would have had to have created it with the appearance of age.

Mountains would “look” old, he reasoned. Trees would be created already functioning — so they would have had growth rings even though they had been created only moments ago.

And, he thought, as Adam and Eve were created as adults, not babies, they would have been created with the appearance of age too. In Gosse's view, they must have had belly buttons even though they were never attached to a mother.

Was the Creator deceptive?
Gosse probably wondered why people stopped inviting him to social events after his idea got out.

But the problem with his view, and this is why he got little if any support from Christians, is that a belly button on someone who had no mother implies deception on God's part. And the Bible says that it is impossible for God to lie (Hebrews 6:18).

So despite Philip Gosse's best intentions and respect for the Bible, his idea — theologically — doesn't stand up to scrutiny.

God wouldn't have created trees with growth rings, and He wouldn't have created Adam and Eve with navels.

well said, typical of most private schools except for afe babalola (abuad), attendance counts, visa as u said is needed to leave d school premises with valid reasons, corporate dressing to lecture halls,religion is not a most, i know guys that haven't visited the chapel since their freshman year, apart from all these, we have d normal life a public university students enjoy, eat anything u like at anytime, socials at its peak, u can block any girl anywhere on campus even in front/behind female hostel, in terms of educational standards, mehn the school is really trying, 100% accreditation of all courses.
but the setback people have is the tuition fee and cost of living because its very high compared to other private institutions in the country.

Hello Nairalanders, am just learning HTML , have downloaded books on CSS and HTML for my tutorials. My major problem now is how to insert or wrap an image into my web page. I don't seem to understand what the books are pointing at, as have followed all due processes still no effect. My question is , must I be connected online or the directory to the image link should be on a server cos am already confused. Been staring at the screen for quite some hours now and I don't want to get frustrated. Pls I need your help @seun if possible Front page for more coverage.
