The newly appointed NSA says that a plan to dialogue with Boko Haram is underway The recently appointed National Security Adviser (NSA), Sambo Dasuki, says plans are in gear to meet with the top brass of the Islamist sect, Boko Haram, with a view to putting an end to the violence perpetrated by the terrorist group. Mr. Dasuki said on Wednesday in Jos that he has the contacts of key Boko Haram leaders for possible dialogue with the group. While speaking during a meeting with stakeholders in Plateau, he said that he is planning to meet with the group on the need for it to cease fire and embrace dialogue as soon as possible. “I was in Yobe and Borno States last week and I have got the telephone numbers and contacts of key Boko Haram members and I will meet with them. “I saw the dangerous effect of Boko Haram in these states and what I saw was pathetic. “But I have the mandate to put heads together with religious and traditional leaders as well as the state governments to ensure an immediate ceasefire,” Mr. Dasuki said. According to him, he is in Plateau State for on-the-spot assessment of the security challenge and in furtherance of the Federal Government’s peace efforts, particularly across the northern part of the country. He expressed confidence that the people of Plateau could put their problems behind them and forge ahead with genuine peace and reconciliation. “I have a stake in Plateau because I have lived in Pankshin and Jos when my father resided here. So if we lived peacefully way back then, it is possible to go back to those good old days. “Before now, it is difficult for me to believe that you can see a Fulani and Berom man together on the street of Plateau fighting. “But the presence of various ethnic and religious groups at this parley is a pointer to the fact that we want to forge ahead.” In his remarks, Governor Jonah Jang said he regrets that the emergency rule in the state had not achieved the intended effect as the attacks on the affected local government areas have continued unabated. On dialogue with Boko Haram, Mr. Jang said that it is difficult to dialogue with the group since its leaders and members are not known. He therefore urged the group to come out and identify itself. “We only hear that Boko Haram claims responsibility for this and that attack but we never heard anybody coming out to say he is Boko Haram. “We know the Niger Delta militants had leaders and a cause they were fighting for which made late President Yar’Adua to succeed with the amnesty programme. But, who is Boko Haram?” Mr. Jang alleged that some influential people are behind the sect in view of the sophistication of its operations and insisted that the sponsors must be dealt with by the appropriate authority. In his remarks, a member of the House of Representatives, Bitrus Kaze, alleged insincerity and lack of will on the part of the government to implement various reports on Jos crises. “In the last 10 years, no single person has been convicted for the crisis on the Plateau. “So what you have is a situation whereby the assailants have become hardened and continued to carry on with the attacks with impunity,” Mr. Kaze said. The parley had in attendance, traditional, religious and community leaders; heads of security services; women; youth groups; and government functionaries, among others. |

Earlier today the Supreme Court in a narrow 5-4 ruling upheld the heathcare law put in place by President Obama. The law affects how Americans get health care, and also provides new court guidelines on federal power. The most controversial part of the ruling is the fact the court upheld that the individual mandate requiring people to have health insurance is valid as a tax. As expected responses were loud and varied, ranging from the furious, to the downright hilarious. Check out the top 10 below: @adamodellmusic: “I hate #Obamacare, I’m moving to Canada” – People who don’t know that Canada also has publicly funded medicare coverage @trueholygoat: We must retake the White House AND the Senate in November. The only way ObamaCare Tax will be repealed. #tcot #teaparty @Clarkey101: Honestly believe Romney would’ve won the election if Obamacare had been struck down. Gives Obama a good platform for November. @sundownmotel: **”Party Rock Anthem” begins blaring; Obama comes out on SCOTUS steps and begins furiously shuffling to the roar of the crowd** @birbigs: This healthcare decision is out of hand. Someone just gave me a prostate exam in the street. Is that guy a doctor?! @CNNNewsUSA: Supreme Court Orders All Dogs To “Jump Into The Ocean And Die” @dogboner: thanks obama wow i cant wait to buy this stupid crap i dont fucking need. sent 8 seconds ago from ipad, iphone, computer and television @TheEllenShow: The Supreme Court upheld Obamacare! I heard Judge Roberts used his save. Incredible. That’s the only one he gets for the entire season. @BorowitzReport: BREAKING #SCOTUS NEWS: Scalia says the government should cover only two #healthcare procedures, transvaginal ultrasounds & exorcisms. And of course…….. @SarahPalinUSA: Obama lied to the American people. Again. He said it wasn’t a tax. Obama lies; freedom dies.

The Government of USA has just passed the ‘Obama Health Care’ bill to law and it will take effect from March 23, 2013.The bill entails that all American MUST have a CHIP known as a “Radio Frequency Identification” (RFID) implanted in their right hand skin or forehead in order to access medical services. Still wondering why it has to be, or is it the confirmation of the prophecy of the 666? The Bible Prophecy Connection While this bill will not be signed into law in its current form, it definitely is a shadow of things to come in the near future. According to Revelation 13:5-8, the Beast, otherwise known as the Anti-Christ, is given power over all peoples: 5 The beast was given a mouth to utter proud words and blasphemies and to exercise its authority for forty-two months. 6 It opened its mouth to blaspheme God, and to slander his name and his dwelling place and those who live in heaven. 7 It was given power to wage war against God’s holy people and to conquer them. And it was given authority over every tribe, people, language and nation. 8 All inhabitants of the earth will worship the beast—all whose names have not been written in the Lamb’s book of life, the Lamb who was slain from the creation of the world. We also know from Daniel 7:23 that the fourth and last world kingdom, ruled by the Anti-Christ, will be so powerful that it will control the whole earth. 23 “He gave me this explanation: ‘The fourth beast is a fourth kingdom that will appear on earth. It will be different from all the other kingdoms and will devour the whole earth, trampling it down and crushing it. How does the Anti-Christ gain control over all the people of the world? More than likely it will be through programs and policies, such as the microchip, or the laws being passed. For instance, the Obama administration has been filled with controversy unlike any other administration in American history from abortion rights, to religion to health care. Some time ago a law was passed through congress and signed by Obama that made it illegal to grow your own garden. Now this may seem ridiculous, because what are they going to do, arrest people for growing tomatoes in their own yard? As funny as it sounds, there is an ultimate agenda here. By passing a law such as this one, the Anti-Christ can get people to rely solely on the government for the food that they need. When the mark of the beast comes out in full force, everyone will be required to have a chip in their hand or forehead in order to buy or sell, that includes buying food. It starts with the health care bill. If everyone agreed to get the chip for health care, then it would be easy to say that not only will your medical records be stored on the chip, but also all of your banking and financial information. It will be easy to convert once the chip is in place. The Bible says that there will be a mark and no person can buy or sell without that mark: Revelation 13: 16-18 16 It also forced all people, great and small, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hands or on their foreheads, 17 so that they could not buy or sell unless they had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of its name. 18 This calls for wisdom. Let the person who has insight calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man. That number is 666. It’s time to WAKE UP! and realize that as the government takes away our freedoms by monitoring the populace through police power and surveillance, they will be setting the stage for the Anti-Christ to takeover more easily every tribe, people, language and nation. |

Sounds of gunfire and explosions are being reported from Damaturu in Yobe state. Though details of the attackers and their targets are still sketchy at this time, Daily Trust can report that some of the attacks are concentrated around Sabon Pegi around which the governor's residence is. A resident who was caught up in the violence told Daily Trust that he ran into a gang of young men trying to set fire to a primary school within the vicinity, Pompomari Primary School, and fled for his life thereafter. He could not not confirm if indeed they had set the school on fire. JTF commander, Col. Dahiru Abdulsalam however told Daily Trust that the primary school has not been burnt. He said that from information he had gathered, Boko Haram members were presently hiding out within the said primary school. He also said that his men have moved into the town and the situation has been brought under control. This has however not been independently verified. Many residents of the town are trapped outside the town and those within have taken refuge. Yobe state has suffered from at least two major attacks in the last seven months. In November 2011, about 70 people were killed and countless others injured in an attack claimed by the Boko Haram. Gun men went through the town, attacking police stations and a building used by the JTF, shooting and throwing explosives, and burning cars with their drivers in them. In May, gun men attacked the Potiskum live stock market, killing over 50 people and setting the market ablaze. More details soon... |
The extremist Boko Haram sect is suspected to be behind the blast UPDATE 1: We just received report that a third explosion has just gone off at Shalom Chuch, in the Trikania area of the city. Read our earlier post below Two explosions have been reported at the Wusasa and Sabon Gari areas of Zaria, Kaduna State. Reports reaching us say an explosion occured near a catholic church in the Wusasa neighbourhood of the city. Witnesses say security agencies have already cordoned off the area and traffic are being diverted. Other sources also report hearing another loud bang around the Sabon Gari area of the town close to an Evangelical Church of West Africa. Another source later said the ECWA church was the target of the attack and that the church building was seriously damaged. The two explosions, we are told, were followed by sporadic shootings. Spokesperson of the Kaduna State command of the Nigerian Police Force, Aminu Lawan, confirmed the two explosions. "Our men have been dispatched to the area, we will give you updates as soon as we confirm anything, right now investigations have commenced," he said. We are unable to confirm casualty figures at this time as rescue agencies say they are still working to comprehend the situation. But there are fears the casualty rate would be high since it happened while Sunday service were on. The National Emergency Management Agency has confirmed the explosions. "Rescue and security officers have moved to the scene," NEMA spokesperson, Yushau Shuaib, said in a statement. |

The city of Maiduguri is shocked by the series of coordinated bomb attacks Reports reaching us from Maiduguri, Borno State capital, say there were series of bomb attacks in the city, Friday morning. One of the attacks involved a suicide bomber who forced his way into the headquarters of the Nigerian police force before detonating his bomb laden vehicle. The suicide bomber could not pass the gate. But even by the gates over 10 persons including the bomber lost their lives. The loud bang shattered windows at the police headquarters building and that of several vehicles within and outside the building. Earlier in the day, the commander of the Joint Task force (JTF), Victor Ebhaleme, confirmed that another suspected suicide bomber was killed by the Improvised Explosive Device (IED) he was trying to plant at Gidan Dambe area of the city at about 6:00am. Mr. Ebhaleme said said that when his men arrived the Gidan Dambe scene, “they found a man we believe to be a member of Boko Haram, dismembered by the explosion.” He added that preliminary investigation has shown that he was killed when he was trying to plant the device. Residents in Maiduguri also informed PREMIUM TIMES that another IED planted by the gate of Ramat Polytechnic exploded, although no one was affected by the explosion there. http://premiumtimesng.com/mobile/news/national/5510-boko_haram_launch_coordinated_bomb_attacks_in_maiduguri.html |

General Buhari needs to help himself under the current political climate. Whenever he is going to speak in public, his media team should vet every word he is going to utter Since it became clear that General Muhammadu Buhari might contest the next presidential election in 2015, every word he utters will be put under serious scrutiny. This time around, as it was before he joined partisan politics in 2002, it was about misrepresentation in accurately translating his expression from Hausa to English language. Translation from one language to another is a very tricky business, and in this piece I will draw examples from my previous employer, the BBC Hausa Service, arguably, the capital of Hausa translation, even if a little bit exaggerated. One of the interesting things about working at the BBC Hausa Service is the debate that takes place almost daily on how to ensure that stories are translated accurately. A single word can generate a hot debate, dictionaries and thesauruses will be consulted, colleagues will put head together, more experienced staff conferred with, and still, sometimes, you may struggle to get an accurate representation of the story. Here is an example about a story on the Big Bang theory. Sometime in September 2008, a test was conducted in Europe trying to trace the origin of the universe from secular scientific point of view. Part of the story stated that “they have now fired two beams of particles called protons around the 27km-long tunnel which houses the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).” The question is how do you translate this scientific expression to the Hausa or the Fulani man herding his cows in the village who has never been taught a single letter in the roman script, let alone heard about a field of study called chemistry. In other words how do you domesticate or Hausanise the story to make sense to your grandmother who listens to the radio daily. After consulting all the dictionaries and the thesauruses, we also need some expertise, and unlike yours sincerely who has to make a complete U-turn from being a science student in secondary school to a social science student at tertiary level, we had in our midst Dr Mansur Liman, a doctorate degree holder in Chemistry who has to bring his knowledge of the field in order to make sense of this story. And finally, a translation was arrived at, and if I can recall vividly the portion was translated as “masana kimiyya a Nahiyar Turai sun yi wani gwaji inda suka harba hasken dai-daikun kwayoyin- kwayar zarra guda biyu cikin wani bututu mai tsawon kilomita ashrin da bakwai, wanda ke dauke da na’ura mafi girma ta harba makamashi a duniya’ . You can also test your translation ability by looking at the full story which is still available on BBC news website with the title “'Big Bang' experiment starts well”. Before coming to General Buhari’s use of the Hausa metaphorical expression “Kare jini Biri Jini”, there are some lessons we can learn from here which might help explain why among other reasons, the story was misrepresented. First of all in making translations, as Malam Suleiman Ibrahim Katsina will always tell us, you first of all pay attention to the meaning rather than the literal translation. Secondly you must have an in-depth understanding of both languages, thirdly you should look for words that will domesticate the story without distorting the real meaning, but can at the same time make sense to the average reader or listener. Fourthly, in translating certain words you may need people with specialised knowledge and ask for their opinion as they will have a better grasp of the issue than somebody who is simply interested in the linguistic application of the word, and then, there is need for honesty in the translation as the bias of the translator can distort the intended meaning and create chaos as we are now seeing with Buhari’s “Kare Jini Biri Jini”. I don’t think I need to spend time explaining the meaning of “Kare Jini Biri Jini”, as I believe Mallam Mahmud Jega of the Daily Trust newspaper and Dr Aliyu Tilde have done a better job at explaining the cultural, contextual and political application of the term. What however is clear from this is that language is at the heart of politics. This could explain why some scholars of language like Norman Fairclough, Teun Van Dijk and Ruth Wodak focus their attention on the social analysis of language rather than its grammatical application. Unfortunately for General Buhari, he has already been stereotyped by a section of the Nigerian media and their collaborators among the political class. But General Buhari also needs to help himself under the current political climate. Whenever he is going to speak in public, his media team should vet every word he is going to utter, moreso when it is going to be in Hausa so that the table should not always be turned against him. As for the meaning of “Kare jini biri Jini” which some Nigerian newspapers wrongly translated as “the dog and baboon will be soaked in blood”, if I were to be asked to translate it for the comprehension of my Geordie neighbours in Newcastle using another English expression, I will simply call it “fierce battle”. |
Mixed reaction trail government decision to rename UNLAG after late MKO Abiola The family of late Moshood Abiola, the presumed winner of the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential elections, on Tuesday said they are ecstatic over government's decision to rename the University of Lagos (UNILAG) as Moshood Abiola University in honour of their late patriarch. President Goodluck Jonathan in a national broadcast to commemorate Democracy Day on Tuesday announced the renaming of the institution after the late Mr. Abiola as a gesture of the present administration to acknowledge the contributions and sacrifices of the late presidential candidate of the defunct Social Democratic Party (SDP) to the cause of democracy in the country. Although the decision has generated mixed reactions from a cross section of Nigerians, the politician's family members and close political associates hail the decision, describing it as most deserving and overdue, considering their late mentor's contributions to the growth of education and scholarship in the country during his lifetime. The son of the late politician, Abdul Abiola, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in a telephone interview that the family sees nothing wrong with the decision of the government in honour of their late father. "We are shocked by the reactions trailing this development," Mr. Abiola said. "My late father believed so much in education. He donated money to universities across the nation. Naming a university after him was a well-deserved honour. "He should still be given more honours. We see nothing political in this. We are happy about it and we are yet to understand the rationale behind people going up in arms over this." According to Mr. Abiola, the renaming of an institution as big as UNILAG after the late business mogul and philanthropist is just one of many ways to honour and immortalise him for all he did for the country's education sector when he was still alive. But, the Save Nigeria Group (SNG), the opposition political group, appears not impressed with the decision of the government, as it claims Mr. Abiola deserves to be conferred with the highest honour in the land. "While acknowledging the place of Abiola in the political history of Nigeria, we would want the highest possible honour for him," the group said on Tuesday in a statement in Lagos by its spokesman, YinkaOdumakin. "We, however, deplore the renaming of the University of Lagos after him. We restate our demand that Abiola must be given a befitting honour for the sacrifices he made for democracy in Nigeria in a decent and worthy manner." The group said it deplores the "indecent" manner in which President Jonathan re-named the University of Lagos after MKO Abiola, arguing that renaming a University established by law through presidential fiat is an abuse of power. "This would make even the symbol of democracy turn several times in his grave, as he died in the process of fighting against arbitrariness and rule of the thumb, which the annulment of June 12 represented. "It is violation of the principles and tenets of democracy, which government officials are celebrating, to go on air to announce the renaming of an institution like the University of Lagos without any consultations with the university community in a manner reminiscent of the autocratic ways of the military brass hats who denied Abiola his victory in 1993 because they arrogated to themselves better knowledge than 14 million Nigerians who went to the polls. "This presidential misdemeanour displayed on the purported renaming of the University of Lagos without due process is at the heart of the mis-governance that has been the signature of a 'democratic' president behaving like an Emperor in the last one year," Mr. Odumakin said. He said the scant regard for appropriation laws that led to the theft of N3trillion on fuel subsidy, as against only N245 billion that was appropriated; the deployment of soldiers against peaceful protesters against the law, and other violations of due process in the last one year, are all signals of a dangerous mind set driving the country into a full dictatorship, while pretending to be a democratic order. "It is high time President Jonathan embraced a democratic mind set and stop behaving like maximum ruler," he said. Similarly, the former special assistant to the late politician, Lisa Olu-Akerele, has described the naming of the University of Lagos after the winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election as "mere tokenism and not far-reaching enough." Mr. Olu Akerele said in Abuja that the activities of late Mr. Abiola transcends the South-West geo-political zone where he came from, noting that naming UNILAG after him tends to limit his recognition to the Yoruba-speaking areas of the country. Though he commended the President for the honour, Mr. Olu-Akerele suggested that the government should have named either the Eagle Square, Abuja or the University of Abuja after him for sacrificing his life for democracy. Mr. Olu-Akerele, who spent time in Abacha's gulac along with Mr. Abiola, noted that it would also have been appropriate to have named the National Stadium, Abuja after the acclaimed Pillar of Sports in Africa in his lifetime. "It is not late in the day for President Jonathan to name Eagle Square or the National Stadium after Abiola," he said. "Anything worth doing is worth being done well." He berated former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who, he described as the direct beneficiary of Abiola's sacrifice, for refusing to acknowledge the late politician's contributions to democracy. "With Jonathan's tokenism, Abiola's ideas have outlived Obasanjo's wickedness and self-centredness," he said. Meanwhile, some prominent lawyers hold differing opinions over the decision, with constitutional lawyer, Itse Sagay, praising President Jonathan for attempting to immortalise the late politician. Abiola, though he faulted the choice of UNILAG. "The president should be praised for his effort to immortalise Abiola. It was done out of good intention, but he chose the wrong institution. Unilag is too well established and has its own individual personality, which will be difficult to overshadow," he said. Mr. Sagay said the president could have named one of the nine federal universities being constructed by the government in honour of the late businessman, pointing out that this would have been less contentious, since they, unlike UNILAG, are yet to be given names nor have any identity of their own. For human rights activist, Bamidele Aturu, though the president has the powers to change the name of the institution the decision must be with the approval of the university's council. "The renaming itself is not the problem. It is a populist gesture. This must not been seen as a way to garner the sympathy of the people of the South West." The President of Voters Awareness Initiative, a non-governmental organisation, Wale Ogunade, said the proper way to honour late Mr. Abiola would have been to recognise June 12 as a national holiday. "MKO Abiola is not known to be an educationist. The best way he would have been honoured would have been for the Federal Government to recognise June 12 as a national public holiday," he said, warning that lawyers in the country are poised to challenge the decision in a court if it is not reversed. "The University of Lagos was enacted by an Act, so nobody can unilaterally change its name without an Act of the National Assembly. I can assure you that this will be challenged in the court, because it is an illegality," he said.
