By Charles Kumolu LAGOS — THE All Progressives Congress, APC, has expressed doubt over President Goodluck Jonathan’s promise that the May 29, 2015 handover date is still sacrosanct, noting that the dates for the presidential and governorship polls should also remain sacred. Alh. Lai Mohammed Alh. Lai Mohammed It also warned against postponing the exercise on the basis of insurgency in the North-West geo-political zone to avoid giving victory to insurgents. Briefing newsmen yesterday in Lagos, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said the APC would not accept any postponement, adding that the party is ready for the elections. His words: “APC is ready for the elections and under no circumstance will we accept a postponement. For us, February 14 and 28 are as sacrosanct as May 29, the handover date. The government has had four years to prepare and the dates for the elections were announced over a year ago. Therefore, there is no going back now. “We note that the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has also said it is ready for the polls. That is good news. Let them now end their clandestine push for either postponement or the formation of an interim government, stop engaging in scare and scandal mongering and dwell on issues, ahead of the polls. “We are satisfied with the assurances by Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, that it is ready for the polls, and we call on the Jonathan administration to give the electoral body all the support and resources it requires to organise successful elections. We’ ll not accept any postponement “Any postponement of the election will mean that INEC is not independent and that it is being dictated to by the Federal Government, a position that will hurt the credibility of the electoral umpire. “Any postponement on the basis of the insurgency in the North-East will represent a victory for the terror group, Boko Haram, and will create a constitutional logjam that will take Nigeria back to 1993. Believe me, we have travelled that route before and it was not pleasant. “The APC strongly rejected the call by the National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki, for the postponement of next month’s general elections, ostensibly to give more time to INEC to distribute the Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs). In spite of this, we have noted with dismay that the Jonathan administration has continued to pursue the plot to shift the elections. That plot in itself is one of the two-pronged approach being pursued by the administration to either shift or scuttle the elections which are scheduled for February 14 and 28. Interim Govt “The other is the campaign for an Interim Government. It is important to state here that for the APC, as a party, both options represent the Devil’s Alternative (apologies to British writer Frederick Forsyth, who has a book by the same title), and are totally, absolutely unacceptable to us under any circumstance. ‘’When President Goodluck Jonathan met with US Secretary of State, John Kerry, on Sunday in Lagos, the President said he told the visiting US top diplomat that “the May 29 handover date is sacrosanct.” “We say this is not reassuring enough, and that for us, the February 14 and 28 dates for the elections are as sacrosanct as the handover date of May 29. Therefore, we are more assured by the call made by Mr. Kerry, that the elections should be held on time as scheduled. Nothing short of that will be acceptable to our party.’ “We are also satisfied with the assurance by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) that it is ready for the elections. The electoral body has also said it will continue with PVC distribution until the eve of the elections. Therefore, the orchestrated campaign about INEC not being ready for the elections is sheer baloney. “Now, make no mistakes about it, we are aware of the limitless capacity of the PDP and the Jonathan administration for anti-democratic and desperate actions in pursuit of selfish motives that have nothing to do with the interest of the good people of Nigeria. “We are aware of the clandestine moves, including reaching out to various interest groups and hiring talking heads to make the television rounds, being made by the administration to get the elections shifted. “If indeed the Jonathan administration is genuinely concerned that many Nigerians have not received their PVCs, let it declare a three-day public holiday to give working Nigerians the opportunity to collect their PVCs. Let the government work with INEC to ensure that the PVCs are distributed at the polling units. If these steps are followed, within five days, the distribution would have been completed.” http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/01/apc-doubts-jonathans-pledge-handover-date/ |
President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday disclosed that the Nigerian military will take delivery of some additional equipment this week and next in his administration’s quest to end insurgency in parts of the country. Jonathan disclosed this during his courtesy visit to the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Gambari, in his palace. He was in Ilorin for the Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential rally in the state. The President expressed the hope that with the delivery of the platforms, the military would move faster within the next two weeks to curtail the security challenge. He said, “You have observed us for the past four years. Yes, we have security challenges relating to the Boko Haram saga mainly in North East. “Although their excesses extend to some parts of the North like Abuja, Sokoto, Gombe and Kano. But it is mainly in the North East. We are working hard and we shall surely bring it to a halt. “As far as the military is concerned, even as we are talking, we are expecting more platforms this week and next week. “I believe that in the next two weeks or so, we will be able to move faster than we are moving.” Outside the security network, Jonathan said his administration had moved fast in many areas like the road network. While admitting that work is still in progress, he said no government could fix all the country’s problems in four years. “We have intervened in so many areas; agriculture that touches the life of an ordinary Nigerian is one of the areas that we have been working very hard. “We are trying to move agriculture to the next level; a level that young graduates will be able to embrace,” the President added. He promised that his administration was committed to pushing the country forward and providing jobs for young people as well as to diverse the economy. Jonathan told the traditional ruler that he was in the palace to personally inform him that he was interested in seeking re-election. He also introduced the party’s governorship candidate in the state, Senator Simeon Ajibola, to the monarch. He said under the PDP, people of the state would continue to enjoy freedom and quality of life. Gambari told the President that having watched his performance over the years, he was convinced that he has done very well. He prayed that God would crown the President’s effort with success. He urged all politicians to conduct their campaigns without violence. He said since he heard of the President’s campaign trip to the state, he had been praying to God to make it hitch-free. Earlier, the national chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Adamu Muazu, had told the emir that the delegation was in the palace to seek his support and prayers so that the PDP could continue the good work it had started. http://www.punchng.com/news/more-equipment-for-military-this-week-says-jonathan/#comments |

Major rift between the Nigerian and American military authorities have been hampering the fight against Boko Haram militants, which have been carrying out murderous attacks on villages and towns in the North-East, the New York Times reports. Relations between American military trainers and specialists advising the Nigerian military in the fight against Boko Haram are so strained that the Pentagon often bypasses Nigeria altogether, choosing to work instead with security officials in the neighbouring countries of Chad, Cameroon and Niger, NY Times quoted defence officials and diplomats as saying. Following the strain in relationship, the Federal Government in December 2014 cancelled the last stage of American training of a newly-created Nigerian Army battalion and there has been no resumption of the training since then. This was against the backdrop of the refusal of the US to sell Cobra attack helicopters and other lethal weapons to the Federal Government to combat the Boko Haram insurgency, saying the army could not maintain them. US Secretary of State John Kerry, scheduled to travel to Nigeria on Sunday, is expected to discuss the security issue and the forthcoming elections with President Goodluck Jonathan when they meet in Lagos. The NY Times reports that American officials are hesitant to share intelligence with the Nigerian military because they contend it has been infiltrated by Boko Haram. It said that the US was so concerned about Boko Haram infiltration that American officials had not included raw data in intelligence they had provided Nigeria, worried that their sources would be compromised. The officials are also said to be wary of the Nigerian military as well, citing corruption and sweeping human rights abuses by its soldiers. “We don’t have a foundation for what I would call a good partnership right now,” said a senior military official with the US Africa Command, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak publicly on the matter. “We want a relationship based on trust, but you have to be able to see yourself. And they’re in denial,” the official said. Senator Ahmed Zanna said it was disappointing that the US would bypass Nigeria to work with smaller countries on terrorism. “For a small country like Chad or Cameroon to come to assist the Americans, that is disappointing. You have a very good and reliable ally and you are running away from them,” he said, faulting the Nigerian government. “It is terrible. I pray for a change of government,” he added. A British diplomat noted that the frustration between the two sides (Nigeria and US) has broad implications for the fight against Boko Haram, including making it harder for other international partners who have joined the effort. “We are trying to work closely with the French and the Americans in support of the Nigerian military and government against Boko Haram, a rift between one of our two partners and the Nigerian government is not a good thing,” the diplomat stated. http://www.punchng.com/news/terrorism-us-ignores-nigeria-to-work-with-chad-cameroon/ |
There are state by state projects that our politicians claim to have completed or started. Its better for us especially the lazy ones amongst us to get up off our butts and verify these claims instead of sitting in front of our computer screens and crying about how "government never do anything for us" |

By Henry Umoru ABUJA—Ahead of next month’s presidential and general elections, the national leadership of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has challenged the All Progressives Congress, APC and its leaders to carry out a survey and see the achievements of President Goodluck Jonathan. President Goodluck Jonathan displaying Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms at the People's Democratic Party's Secretariat in Abuja on Thursday (30/10/14). The PDP, in a statement issued yesterday by its National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, described the APC as lacking in policy direction, boasting that all the achievements of the PDP-led government were verifiable. The party said its array of candidates for the February elections were far better than those of the APC, adding that same was applicable to the policy direction of both parties. The party noted that it was the only truly pan-Nigerian party for which the unity, stability and prosperity of the nation remained paramount. PDP said: “The founding fathers of the PDP had their eyes set on specific goals, which include ensuring the indivisibility of Nigeria, sustenance of democracy and providing enabling environment for the prosperity and welfare of our people. “These have guided our governments and have continued to reflect in the quality of leadership by our elected and appointed officers at all tiers in the last 16 years. “These are also the values that have resulted in the unparalleled milestones recorded in every sphere of our national life especially under the current administration. “The quality of legislation and policies under its administration has continued to transform the nation into a destination for progress with Nigerians excelling in every sphere of life “The strict adherence to the rule of law, the guarantee of personal freedom for all Nigerians, passage of the Freedom of Information Act, ensuring greater transparency in governance, the electoral reforms, the policy of wealth transfer, leading to the unprecedented thriving of private enterprises, the agricultural and health reforms resulting in increased life expectancy and reduction in food import. “Others are the return of the railways and massive investment in road infrastructure and communication as well as growing the economy to become the largest in Africa and the third fasted growing in the world, all point to the superiority of the manifesto of the PDP and its ability to deliver good governance despite daunting challenges http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/01/jonathans-achievements-verifiable-pdp/ |
According to Android Authority, Kirt McMaster, the outspoken CEO of Cyanogen Inc., introduced himself this way at a symposium: I’m the CEO of Cyanogen. We’re attempting to take Android away from Google. He further went on to present Cyanogen’s new drive: We’re making a version of Android that is more open so we can integrate with more partners so their servicers can be tier one services, so startups working on [artificial intelligence] or other problems don’t get stuck having you have to launch a stupid little application that inevitably gets acquired by Google or Apple. These companies can thrive on non-Google Android. We’ve barely scratched the surface in regards to what mobile can be. Today, Cyanogen has some dependence on Google. Tomorrow, it will not. We will not be based on some derivative of Google in three to five years. There will be services that are doing the same old bulls— with Android, and then there will be something different. That is where we’re going here. Cyanogen You can read all the juicy details over at Android Authority. This is a tall vision by Cyanogen. It certainly isn’t going to be a walk in the park. What do you think of it all? |
Xiaomi has a trade-in program for Apple iPhone users in the works. The word about the bold marketing stint arrived from an executive from the ambitious Chinese startup. Reportedly, iPhone 5s owners will be able to trade their device for the freshly announced Xiaomi Mi Note. Apple iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus users on the other hand, will be able to set themselves up with the drool-worthy Xiaomi Mi Note Pro. According to the report, users will be able to trade their iPhone in regardless of its condition. However, we do suspect that a functioning device is required for the swap to take place. Official details about the program are yet to be revealed. We reckon that, at least initially, the trade-in program will only be available in China. http://m.gsmarena.com/xiaomi_for_iphone_tradein_program_reportedly_in_the_works-news-10904.php |
