We forget too often. We played all our creative players behind RVP against West Brom and Chelsea. We were highly unconvincing against West Brom.

Charts cannot answer this. Only heat maps. Charts wont tell you how Rooben dribbled from centre circle into the wing and cuts into the edge of the box before taking a left foot shot.

until you realise 2 striker system like falcao + RVP hinders forward play then you wouldn't understand. with costa, kane, aguero, etc - there are 3 creators. they are all looking at feeding the arrow head the ball.

with united - you have 2 number-9s getting in each other's way when the play converges. van gaal also uses them to play away from each other to stretch the central halves apart so that the middle can be split open.

Even against Brazil it was Robben who dribbled through the middle enroute to winninng the penalty for the opening goal. Against Argentina, there were Robben vs Mascherano situations in the middle, even in the middle left of the field.

robben played as a striker - he partnered van persie. of course, he's a natural winger and a good dribbler. so he could collect the ball, run with it & cause damage.

sneijder played in the hole behind them. blind was the wing back. the cross that VP scored with a superman header from was from blind - he provided the width.

the tactics were very simple & after a while - holland became boring to watch. they set themselves to control games, not necessarily to win them.

I watch all Netherland's matches. I have described what transpired on the pitch and not what they were sent out to position. The last role Robben played was a striker (which he was meant to play). He was first a winger on the right, then a killer via the middle before a striker. Sneidjer was mostly anonymous. Kyte (is that d spelling again?) Occupied the right while Robben wasn't there. The wing backs were not as attack minded as they were defence minded. Robben was three man in the attack which compensated for the whole team attacking weakness.

Too many questions o. Didn't u watch their matches? Sneidjer was often drifting wide from his position, while Robben had the license to play anywhere. Robben used the number 7 and middle a lot pushing players away from their positions.

Gaal mistake is that he doesn't know Arjen Robben was 3 players for him. He was a number 10, number 7 and a striker for Netherlands.

He is aware of the long balls to the wide areas (Valencia, Young, Di Maria and Januzaj) but he is not correcting it, perhaps because the strikers are not freeing themselves from the opposition full backs.

If he wanted to, he could correct this style of play. However, I think Rooney stiil plays the highest number of long balls to our strikers. Some are not connected while many have been squandered.

The great come back in difficult Turin. With June lining up Zidane, Edgar Davis, Inzaghi, Conte. They went 2-0 up in just 11 mins via Inzaghi goals, but Cole and Yorke played some beautiful football to help the team to a famous win. The whole team was awesome. I think I would like to agree with Yorke, those days defenders didn't know where to wait for Ronaldo, Tevez and Rooney. Sometimes they even leave the middle empty until someone is taking the ball down the field. Then they all swarm into the aerial like bees exchanging passes. They all dropped deep to run at defenders.

When you re-watch Juventus vs Man United in Turin 1999, you will see Cole and Yorke involved heavily in build up play, running at pace at the Juve defence.

May be playing two poachers is also a problem in our team. One should be enough if at all.

SailorXY, honestly, Januzaj should have been the one to give way at West Ham, not Rooney. Had we played Fellaini instead of Januzaj, you wouldnt have felt Rooney's mistakes with passes and Blind would have emerged with over 90% pass accuracy. It was like two people left to do the job of three. We were already having two men lying in our striking position, then Janujaz went to sleep.

that was the confusing part sef cuz if that was the case, Fellaini & Valencia should have been a part of the diamond midfield. that's why i said LvG's selections are very difficult to understand as i feel we have various style of players for proper dynamism in formations & team selections to keep opponents guessing, but the richness seem to be confusing LvG himself so he's just fitting big names anywhere he likes.

This is the second person I have read exercising fear that RVP and Falcao partnership will not work. The first guy (an ex-West Ham player) was worried about their lack of pace of our duo, and then this United side is not getting many crosses in from the wing as they did in his playing days when United used real wingers.

what do you think about our football yesterday......especially the second half when we had to get a goal by all means necessary?

I wasn't myself yesterday. Our players were just running around like squirrels and my eyes were seeing stars like I had malaria. The TV was circling around my view as the match wore on. We have big fixtures from March and we needed to win all our matches before then to extend the gap from our rivals contesting for UCL spots. There we were chasing West Ham that has lost form.

We played better than the first half. We kept the heat too late. I think overall we went with a plan to cope with West Ham's agbegi football style rather than playing our own game. Blind's equalizer was a big relief at the end and a well deserved reward for our late pressure. I wondered if that ball would have gone in it if it were our other (forward) players who took that volley. It was well directed by Blind.
