I do two jobs, one govt job that pays me 150k, and another audit firm that pays 250k, making it 400k
My girlfriend has been very supportive though, she cooks and clean at all times, except my laundry cos I do my laundry myself and once a while help in cleaning but I don't cook cos I can't eat food that I cook, I don't even help her in the kichen enter except when I want to microwave food.
Recently she asked me to give her my UBA ATM card where I recieve 150k and I should keep the 250k for myslef that she will manage the money herself but will only give me 15k monthly for transportation, Kai my own money o. She has agreed to buy all groceries and house-upkeep needed for the month except rent.
Her excuse is that it's better since I dont help in house chores.
Though I do give her monthly upkeep for her stress but managing my finance is not something I actually fancy.

I am still contemplating on it and I need input if it's ok to allow her manage the money.

Good day my dear Nairaland family,

This is not the kind of post I ever imagined I’d make, but life happens, and sometimes you have to put pride aside for the people you love.

I’m a wife writing this with a heavy heart. Since December, our family has been struggling to stay afloat after a major setback hit us. My husband, a hardworking young man in the mobility space, has been without a car his main source of livelihood. He has built a small but solid network of private clients, including NGOs and individual professionals, who regularly request his car hire services. That was how he took care of us paying bills, feeding the home, doing everything a responsible man should do.

But a tragic incident last December grounded him. The car he had been using (a Toyota Camry “muscle” model) was lost, and since then, despite all efforts to bounce back, he’s still stuck at home with no vehicle to get back to work.

I’ve been carrying the weight alone since then, but it’s not sustainable. We have bills to pay, and it breaks my heart to see him at home every day, feeling helpless, when I know he is one of the most diligent, transparent, trustworthy, and focused men I’ve ever known.

I’m here, publicly, humbly asking for help. We are hoping for any of the following:

1. A loan of 5–6 million naira to secure a Toyota Camry (muscle model) the same type of vehicle his clients require for their jobs. We are willing to sign a formal agreement and repay over 36 months (3 years), and I will also be supporting the repayment with my income.


2. A good-condition Toyota Camry (muscle) on hire purchase with a clear, legally binding agreement.


3. A car owner who isn’t looking to sell, but would prefer monthly returns on the car through an agreed fixed amount under legal terms.


4. Or a car dealer willing to accept a 30% initial payment and allow us to spread the balance over an agreed period with documentation.



Please, I don’t want my husband to remain idle as we enter the second half of the year. We are not looking for free money just an opportunity to bounce back. If you know someone, or if you’re in a position to assist in any way, please help us.

I’ve been observing the tech scene in Nigeria and Africa for a while, and I can’t help but feel disappointed by the lack of real innovation. Don’t get me wrong—there are a few brilliant minds doing amazing things, but the majority? It’s just copy-paste, especially in fintech. Everywhere you look, it’s another crypto app, payment solution, or digital bank.

Now, AI is the next big thing, and instead of challenging themselves to build something groundbreaking, many are just replicating what’s already out there—and often poorly. Some even use these copied ideas just to raise investor funds, knowing the projects will crash because there’s no real innovation behind them.

Look at the West. Most of the world’s biggest innovations came from people solving real problems. Uber’s founder didn’t own cars but created the largest ride-hailing service. Coursera’s founders didn’t have a physical school but built the biggest e-learning platform. Canva’s designer didn’t chase clients—she made a tool that millions now use daily. Even OpenAI integrated it into their system.

Meanwhile, in Nigeria/Africa, many developers just learn to code and wait for foreign clients to pay them. Why not use those skills to solve our own problems? We have endless issues in edtech, logistics, agriculture, e-commerce, healthcare—yet the few unicorns we celebrate are almost all fintech (Opay, Moniepoint, etc.).

Yes, our government is terrible, but are we also not part of the problem? If we keep chasing trends without original thinking, how will we ever build a robust tech ecosystem that creates jobs and grows the economy?

What do you think? Am I being too harsh, or is it time for African developers to step up their game?
