Car Talk / My Pugs Journey From Enugu To Uyo On Sunday 18th Nov 2012 (Update) by tdie: 5:57pm On Nov 19, 2012
Just felt like sharing my trip on one of the most horrible stretches of road in East Nigeria.
I had gone to Enugu earlier on Thursday (15/11) to sort out some personal stuff and also to get my windscreen changed. The windscreen change was a disaster (Details in Peugeot thread). On driving with the car stereo off, you can hear the distinct whooshing sound of air around the edges of the windscreen from inside the car. Will try and have it sorted out at a specialist workshop here in Uyo.
Anyways I left Enugu on Sunday (18/11) around 12 pm from the beginning of the Enugu-Port Harcourt Express way (after filling my tank at the NNPC Mega Station).
The early stages of the journey were relatively smooth… I could at times get up to 120km/hr. and the journey was relatively ok up to the Lokpanta Nta Cattle Market…
The rest is best described by the pix….
Still a lot of old school vehicles on the roads… Volvo 240, Peugeot 404 pickups, 504s, 505s, W124s etc.
Apart from the very common scraping of my undercarriage on the horrible road surfaces, my 307 Pug drove like a dream… with my AL4 tranny shifting perfectly and seamlessly… Performance has improved drastically since I had my ABS sensors changed… And I was Chilling AC all through…
Got home like 5.30 pm… so that was five and half hours for a 250km Journey… We really have a long way to go o…
I love my lion to pieces…. But am beginning to think I need a second car… preferably an SUV otherwise my Peugeot would age prematurely if contionuosly used on that road… Any thoughts/opinions on the Jeep Liberty or the 2003 Nissan Pathfinder…?

Ikenna351: I met a lovely Lady Lion owner today (charming is an understatement). What really impressed me was that she knew some of the technical terms used and would complete them for me while trying to say them. A quality most ladies lack, including some men. Meaning she pays attention to her car. Thumbs up! cool

Anyway, the issue with her Lion is 1st degree "Excessive Fueling". Pronounced black smoke even at idle. Unfortunately, I didn't drive to work today (Fuel Scarcity in Abuja is something else). So I had no tools to check some components that would cause such issue. I had only the DMM. Lucky her, there was no visible vacuum line on the engine. Meaning, less or no headache on vacuum leak menace.

As i tried to test the o2 sensor harness with the DMM, i found something weird. The o2 is the universal 4-wire o2 sensor. Meaning, two wires are for the sensor heater, the other two for the signal and ground wire. I found it weird because the four wires were reading 12+. The value of the signal wire, generally, should give 0.70-64 mv (Millivolts) when connected to the sensor, but would read higher (like 1 volts) when disconnected from the sensor. One of the 2 wires for the sensor heater is supposed to read 12+, only when the ignition is switched on. But it was constantly reading 12+ even when the ignition is off. Weird, isn't it? Unless someone is telling me thats how the harness of the o2 in that car were factory connected to work that way, which i will still find weird. Why? Because thats the same o2 sensor in my car as well. So I know perfectly how that sensor should be connected. In this case, the sensor harness is needed to be sorted out first, before even checking to know if the sensor is still ok or not. To do that, i will need to check the continuity of the signal wire from the ECU wiring connector. But where do i have the time? Sad face! And most importantly, I will need the car electrical manual to know which of the relays that feeds the o2 heater 12+. From that end, i would know what went wrong. Also will need to check how good are the sensor 2 grounds from their sources. These could take days to sort out, due to work. But the fastest means of knowing what is wrong is simply by scanning the car. Unfortuntaly, i have a scanner that doesn't work, not even once. Again, sad face! If my scanner was working, all her nightmares would have been dealt with within 5 mins of plugging it in.

I felt so sad and bad that i couldn't give her the help she needed. Reason for bringing this up here is for Peugeot owners to be carefull who you open your bonnet for or who you give your car to fix for you, especially when it has to do with electrics. I don't know why those o2 sensor wires were giving wrong values. It could be wrong connections, it could be not, but i do know that something is wrong with the harness or the o2, because even when i disconnected the sensor while the engine was idling, there was no change, even though the engine temperature was almost at it optimal temperature. She has no option than to take it elsewhere for scanning. Well, the issues may not only be the o2 or could be. Just have to wait till she pull the error codes.

But one more thing that baffles me is that with the black smoke emitting from the exhaust pipe, the check engine light was not lit. Seriously, strange!

Ikenna.

You didn't tell the house which Peugeot model the Lady had.... You must really have been lovestruck today... :-).
Also, this might be a moot point now, but did her CEL illuminate at all on engine start before going off..?? I ask this question because quite a few naughty car destroyers aka mechanics are fond of disconnecting the CEL, Airbag-, ABS- and other dashboard lights when they've been triggered. Its very difficult to imagine a lion not throwing up a CEL on black smoke pouring from the exhaust. My 307 is so sensitive that just a spark plug change will trigger the CEL light if the incorrect grade plugs are used (without any abnormal exhaust fumes).

Make: Peugeot

Model: 307 XSE

Model Year: 2004

Engine: 2.0L EW10 I4

Fuel type: Petrol

Transmission: Porsche 4 speed automatic tiptronic(AL4)

Drive: FWD

Symptom(s) Faulty ABS sensors, Mis aligned wheels
Finally have my ABS sensors in from MAPCO: Was also able to call in a few owed favors and had my car gone over at a Company workshop.
So today, I was able to Wheel Balance, Align and change my sensors... smiley
also found out today that 2 different brands and specs of struts were fitted to my front end by our local mechanics (i.e my Left and right front struts look alike but are of different specs... kai i tire for our local mechanics o... angry ) so am looking to order for the original struts from maybe the UK... Siena can you be of help??
Anyways am expecting my car back tomorrow... Cant wait...

Car Talk / Re: What Did You Do To Your Car Today? by tdie: 1:24pm On Nov 05, 2012
nissparts: ^The abs sensor IS your speed sensor and is also responsible for the transmission issue.
How is your speedometer?

My speedo works fine..., Car moves normally also mostly except every once in a while-when moving from rest is either a bit sluggish or a bit abrupt with a jerk.

I pulled the following codes from my scan

1. Automatic Transmission Control Unit Random Permanent Fault: Vehicle Speed Transmitted by the ABS CAN: NO SIGNAL
2. Automatic Transmission Control Unit Intermittent Fault: Gearbox Input Engine Speed Signal: NO SIGNAL
3. ABS/ESP ECU Permanent Fault: Front Left Wheel Speed Sensor: Open Circuit/Short Circuit to Positive or Short Circuit to Earth.
Also my ABS/Traction Control Warning light is on...
After an online research session and hours of poring through my Haynes Peugeot 307 repair manual, I discovered that the ABS Sensor is in fact different from my Engine speed input sensor.

Engine: 2.0L EW10 I4

Fuel type: Petrol

Transmission: Porsche 4 speed automatic tiptronic(AL4)

Symptom(s): I have also been experiencing knocking sounds on the drivers side tire @ low speeds on uneven roads. Unfortunately here in Uyo there is no competent Peugeot mech. They have had me randomly change almost all the suspension parts without success. Will have to get permission from work to drive the car to Enugu (over horrible roads :-( ). @ least in Enugu there's a Peugeot dealership with access to original parts. I also have my front abs sensors kaput ( detected via a scan today after loss of abs functionality). Will have the sensors shipped in from Germany and will also have that fixed @ Enugu. My engine speed sensor also seems to be sending awry signals to my TCU- resulting in not too smooth take-offs from stand still. (Also detected via scan today...-i have my own diagbox scantool ) So I'll have the sensor leads cleaned with contact spray or changed if neccessary.

And finally; my windscreen is cracked (not today though)... Will also have it changed asap. Its so much fun being a DIYer... ;-)

Car Talk / Who Can Clear Me Out On Wheel Balancing And Alignment.... by tdie: 4:08pm On Nov 04, 2012
Hi all,
I had my Lions wheels balanced about 3 months ago @ a Michelin dealership in Enugu. They used some computer thingy and added some little lead like weights to the inner part of the 4 wheels. I also had the tires aligned at the same time.
My question is this; how frequently should one have his wheels balanced...?? Or aligned...
I plan on undertaking a 400km journey in 2weeks and my mechanic adviced on having my wheels balanced and aligned. Is he right (considering that I had that done 3 months ago)??

Thanks guys for your contributions

Ikenna351:

Unfortunately, the scanner has refused to work. I think it's defective. What a waste of money !

Make sure you test before you pay, if you want to buy one from anybody. I have learnt my lessons.

Ikenna

@Ikenna, What is the model of scanner that you got? Is it the Diagbox version? Did you carry out the offline updates? I got my scanner from a dealer on NL and initially it refused to work at all. After a few tweaks however its working now. And mine only can be used on Windows XP.
Why not tell us the issues you have with your scanner-maybe I could be of help... smiley
Car Talk / Re: Peugeot: Cars With Attitude! by tdie: 1:31pm On Sep 11, 2012
HI All,
I'm back again (See my post earlier in this thread about an Oil leaking and hard starting Peugeot 307 Automatic). I bought a Lexia/PP2000 scan tool but for some reasons, it could not communicate with my ECU. I then had to have it scanned with a generic tool and pulled the following codes;
Fault Code PD209: Description-Dialogue with the Automatic gearbox ECU. Incorrect value received. Status-Intermittent fault
Fault Code P0480: Fan Unit Speed reference value. Status-Intermittent fault
Fault Code P0326: Knock sensor. Status-Permanent Fault

My question-especially regards the knock sensor is whether the knock sensor can be responsible for hard starting issues-I looked online but there seem to be different opinions. Also is the knock sensor the same with crankshaft position sensor (Thats what the Manager of the Autoshop where I had my car scanned said).
I had my Coolant temperature sensor changed a few days back to a brand new one from the UK. But my hard starting issues persist.
As regards the Oil leak. I think I found the culprit... The Air hose wasn't fitting snugly enough unto the throttle body...! I had that rectified and the leakage has almost stopped totally. Will use the car for a while to see if it comes up again.
Pleas what could be the other causes of this hard starting. Someone else said it could be the fuel pump.
Ikenna, Siena...

Aqva: Arrrgh. I'm beginning to see Pug cars as liablities. Not sure if the Japs make their cars so complex.

All cars have issues... Peugeots maybe moreso, but then you don't buy a Peugeot for Jap grade reliability. My 307 Handles and moves like a dream on the highway. My Old 306 survived a rollover+Somersault car crash with its new owner and is still on the road. So its Safety and Handling.... Exceptional.
Have you even driven toyotas before...? Boring... even the Avalon flagship models grin

And moreover, The new Pugs 308, 408 etc have very good reliability ratings

Thanks Ikenna; but what of the oil leak issue?? Did you see the pictures I posted and the other symptoms I complained about earlier...? What's the blue sensor that's directly under the throttle body?? It is also quite oil soaked. Could it be the cause of the Oil leak.

Oh; and I also noticed that the hose connecting the secondary air injection pump to the cylinder head cover is broken. Can that account for hard staring in the morning??

Car Talk / Re: Peugeot: Cars With Attitude! by tdie: 6:16pm On Sep 02, 2012
My Pug 307 Challenges(EW10 Series).
Hi Guys...; My Second Peugeot Experience has been really interesting ( I owned a Pug 306 1.8L a few years ago before a Long Jap Break-Don't grimace grin ). Anyways like I mentioned on an earlier post on this thread, my EW10 Series Pre-facelift Pug 307 (2.0 16V) started spewing a bit of oil on the front part of my engine-see pix, and on examination I detected that the Throttle body seemed rather oily, as well the area just beneath the throttle body. I did some digging around and detected that my Engine Breather tube was broken and had that fixed. I then had the already spilled oil cleaned off.
The problem continued and i asked a seemingly knowledgable PAN trained mechanic here what the fault could be. He suggested that i change the Cylinder Head Cover-see pic). I have had that changed with a new cylinder head cover seal installed, and still the problem is there. Otherwise my Engine runs fine. I have scoured through my Haynes repair manual but I can't seem to find anything helpful. I also looked online-Even Aussie Frogs seemed not to have much on the topic.
So now I asked the Auto gurus here... Siena, Ikenna... Pleas what could the culprit be. Is the blue sensor just under the throttle body in the pic the oil pressure sensor.. could that be responsible..??
The second challenge i'm having is that my Pug has to crank quite a few number of ´times-up to 3 or 4 before starting each morning, and then sometimes it doesnt respond to the throttle immediately after starting and then moves sluggishly (its an auto tranny). But after warming up it runs fine for the rest of the day and has no starting issues whatsoever. I changed my plugs from the original Boschs to Borg and also my fuel pump (Thanks to my PAN mechanic again angry )and immediately the engine started misfiring and threw up a catalytic converter fault. I reverted back to my old pump and plugs and the misfiring and Converter fault disappeared, but the morning hard starting is still there.
Otherwise it runs and handles lovely, though the tranmission changes could be smoother. Am thinking of ordering the Pressure solenoids for the AL4 (or maybe a complete valvebody modified with the new Borg warner Solenoids), but can't seem to find a link. Siena, could you be of help?? Any ideas suggestions would be appreciated

Hey ikenna, Thanks. Dont worry, You didnt sound so abracadabra... I try small for car mechanics and electrics... Even have my own multimeter, A haynes manual and am getting a lexia/peugeot scantool from bigx. Some mechanic dude was telling me to change the plastic valve covers... he said they were blocked (...and ofcourse i ran away... grin )
My engine is the EW10 variant.

Hey All, I have a Peugeot 307 2.0 L petrol Automatic pre-facelift and during a routine servicing last week, i found some oil in the air inflow hose (the hose that connects the air filter to the throttle body). On running the engine with the PCV (breather) hose disconnected, i found that it was spewing a fine oil mist into the air hose. Is that normal? Also i sit normal that the throttle body be just a tiny bit oily?
if t´he above are problems, then what could be the possible causes. My Haynes repair manual is not very helpful, and an online search did not reveal much either. I also did not find much in this regard on Aussiefrogs forum (I´m a member).
I understand the whole concept of positive crankcase ventilation, but my question remains-Is it normal to find engine oil in the air inflow tube?
Ikenna, your knowledge is needed.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for all your contributions on my last post (Peugeot 406 v6)
Already my first Lion is on its way-the 307 (2.0 XSi Automatic "full option grin"wink which i intend to use as a daily driver.
However i would like to do a transmission oil change once it gets here.
The problem is that i need the correct ATF for the 307 AL4 Auto-transmission which is Mobil Esso LT 71141.
Is there anywhere I could get this ATF here in Nigeria-Abuja, Lagos or elsewhere??
Having it shipped in from Europe would be my last option-shiping costs are a bit dear.
Ikenna, your leonine input as always will be appreciated and BTW am in Auja-lets hook up someday nah and swap a few lion anecdotes wink wink
Would also love to know whether the dexron type atf that is rampant here is a viable alternative for my tranny.

Wow; @ ikenna; that was quite educative! Thanks bro; will go ahead to have a phase 2 v6 shipped in from holland!
I can live with the issues you mentioned.
I recall having a leak problem with my pug 306 which had water ingress into the passenger footwell;it was AC related and corrected.
What of the 307; any opinions?
Will keep you guys updated.
@ jbrodaly, are your 307s the facelift versions (2005+)??

Nice one guys; Ikenna; I was really looking forward to your contribution.
Please guys; let keep them coming...
For those who have had issues with Pugs, could you please be a bit more specific...?? E.g ECU failure, Top gasket burn out etc...
Haven't seen comments from Siena in a while; hope alls well...
I don't expect a Pug 406 to be perfect; no car is actually... Even the japmobiles; My cousin just got a 2002 RAV4 toyota only to have to change the ECU @ almost 100k Naira barely a month after Purchase , Honda transmission issues are so common that its no news again. Nissan and plenty sensor failures; Camry with sudden unintended accelerations.... I could go on....
So please let's be objective....;

@ wakbul; what specific issues did you have with your 307...?
@ jbrodaly; are your Pugs for sale?? If so, what specs?? Model year etc

Am not particularly bothered about 2nd hand value; Nigerians generally don't like V6 cars-even the nissan v6s (maxima etc.)and the honda accord V6s are priced so low on the Nairaland second hand market.
If I eventually get a V6, I'd probably use it till it falls apart.

Once more; Thanks Guys....
