It is the season of Ballon d'Or again., the 2021 edition.

Ballon d'Or is a trophy awarded to the best individual player of the season. There are always debates and talks on who is fit to get the award. People sometimes question why there is a need for one player to be positioned as a superior every year above other players.



A shortlist for the Ballon d'Or trophy was created to streamline contenders. It raised eyebrows; people questioned the judgment on why some players who deserve to be on the list did not get included.

There were some inclusions on the list that came as a shock. Here is a list of players that deserve to be on the list, sadly exempted.

Two injuries have shaken Chelsea following what should have been a routine, problem-free win against Malmo in the Champions League on Wednesday.

First, and most concerning, was Romelu Lukaku being forced off in only the 23rd minute after a wild challenge from Lasse Nielsen.

Striker partner Timo Werner was subsequently replaced in the 44th minute as a result of a painful-looking hamstring injury.

Within the context of the match, it had next-to-no impact; the Blues were 2-0 up before losing their two forwards and yet still went on to win 4-0.

Chelsea are one of the few clubs in world football capable of withstanding the loss of a £150 million ($207m) strike force to injury in the same game.

"They will be some games out, I guess. We only had Christian Pulisic [out], we miss everybody, but we have no excuses," manager Thomas Tuchel told BT Sport after the match, with further information to come on the extent of their injuries in the coming days.

Real Madrid is reportedly back in the race to sign Paul Pogba with the France World Cup winner having a huge decision to make over his future.

Pogba is in the final year of his contract at Manchester United and could walk away for nothing in the summer.

United paid Juventus £89million back in 2016 – smashing the British transfer record – to bring the midfielder back to the club after he left as a teenager.

The Blues have already made inquiries over the possibility of a reunion with Eden Hazard. The Belgium winger was brilliant for Chelsea before going to Real Madrid in 2019, since when he has stunk out the Bernabeu.


El Nacional reckons Roman Abramovich believes Hazard’s struggles to be just a phase and that the winger could once again recapture his best form back at Stamford Bridge.

Real would be open to a deal, but perhaps not at the terms Chelsea is offering.

The story goes that the Blues are only willing to pay £34million for Hazard – around a third of the fee Real stumped up a couple of years ago. There might be a compromise, though…

Real need a right-back and may ask for an exchange with Reece James. Chelsea value the 21-year-old at around £38million so could demand that Real stuff Hazard’s pockets with cash before sending him back to the Bridge.

The Rangers defender put his poor performance on Thursday behind him to help Nigeria avenge their defeat against the Central African Republic

Leon Balogun and Victor Osimhen were both on target as the Super Eagles gained their pound of flesh against CAR with a 2-0 win in their 2022 World Cup qualifier in Douala.

The Super Eagles had suffered a shock home defeat in the first leg of the encounter, but there was no repeat of that result at the Japoma Stadium in Douala, Cameroon, on Sunday.


Gernot Rohr’s men started the clash on the front foot, dictating the play right from the start. But despite controlling possession, they failed to create any real chance.

However, it all changed in the 29th minute when Leon Balogun, who was poor in the first leg, fired home a perfect volley from a Chidozie Awaziem cross.

It was the goal the three-time African champions needed following a positive start. The Super Eagles continued to dominate possession, and it was only a matter of time before they doubled their advantage.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has revealed that he had hoped that Lionel Messi would’ve stayed at the club and played for free.

Messi left the club on a free transfer in the summer, joining French giants Paris Saint-Germain after Barcelona were unable to pay his wages in accordance with La Liga rules.

The Argentine forward joined a star-studded list of players who Barca have had to let leave due to huge financial problems. The likes of Luis Suarez, Antoine Griezmann and Ivan Rakitic have all left in recent transfer windows.

However, Messi, a six-time Balon D’or winner, was certainly the biggest shock with the player looking likely to sign a new contract on reduced wages before league rules meant the deal was unable to be finalised.

Now, Laporta was admitted that he had faint hope that the Barca legend would have remained at the Camp Nou for free.

Speaking to RAC1 (via Goal), Laporta revealed: “With Messi I do not get angry because I appreciate him. I know he had a huge desire to stay, but also a lot of pressure because of the offer he had.

“Everything indicates that he already had the offer from PSG. Everyone knew that he had a very powerful offer. We knew from Messi that they had a very good offer.

“At no time do I think of going backwards. I think I’m doing the best for Barca. Nobody can put the institution at risk.


“I did hope that at the last minute Messi would say that he would play for free. I would have liked that and he would have convinced me. I understand that the league would have accepted it. But we cannot ask that of a player of his level.”
